Mazda CX-5 is the best compact SUV design wise and performance plus Mazda is a very reliable car as well. Toyota is only popular to consumers who doesn't understand driving very much but for petrolheads and car enthusiasts Mazda is their favorite to drive. Mazda all the way whatever model.

Runs nice araund the curves it is sporty enough for me .the towing capacity 3500lbs is great this is one reason I got one. I live in the country and drive lots of gravel roads. The RAV4 trail is a great car for me to drive.
3500lbs towing is becoming a rartity in compact SUV segment 😔 That is one awesome things about Rav4 Trail. Grab a hood blanket to quiet that engine noise and you're good to go!
You make super good reviews. I also drove the Rav4 and it was too loud and no get up and go for my taste. Mazda upgraded the info system for 2021. I just bought the 2021 CX-5 Signature in red and love to drive it.
If you are planning to lease the car you can choose whatever fits you. But if you are thinking of purchasing the car Toyota RAV4 is my recommendation out of the two. This is coming from a person that’ owns a transmissions (my specialty)/ mechanic shop for over 20plus years in Los Angeles. Toyota/Lexus cars are reliable. The parts for Toyota are cheap. So once it does break down it won’t cost you an arm. They can rack those miles up before I see them in my store for repair. Easily they can rack up 200k+ miles. Seen many 300k on Toyota brand and Lexus. Resale value is great too.
WB Wayne big difference. @@moonsapling almost every new car engine nowadays is direct injection or multiport. Kepp up with decarb maintanences and it's not that big of a problem
@@jdlyw1692 i prefer not to pay for these special procedures. Toyota are clever enough to put both injection systems and not have funny problems like carbon build-up. Every new car being with direct injection only is not an excuse my friend.
@@moonsapling first of all I do my own maintanence for all of that being a former technician at Mazda so that's not an issue for me. @@jdlyw1692 the fun comes in different places on vehicles like the RAV4 or the Subaru Crosstrek. I have a friend of mine with a lifted Rav4 and we often go to the mountains. I just love that thing. An Owners Observations: After a good offer from my Mazda dealer, I recently traded-in my beloved 2016 CX-9 ‘Signature’. As the ‘refreshed’ CX-9 is still a few years away, l opted to try a 2019 CX-5 ‘Signature’ (‘Snowflake White’), newly available with the Napa leather, Apple car play, ventilated seats, power folding mirrors & the same turbo as in the 9. I LOVE IT!! I completely get Sofyan’s ‘grin’ & chuckle... the moment you touch the gas pedal (...not stomp, just touch), the CX-5 comes alive! Traditionally more of a ‘big car’ guy, I admit: the CX-9 is still more my cup of tea at core. BUT... the CX-5 is a great ride! And as other commenters have said: the premium fuel is truly optional. Having lived with the same engine for 3yrs in the previous car, you get the same 310 lb ft of torque with regular gas. I’ll spring for premium on a road trip! Friday I loaded-up at Home Depot with 8 bags of mulch and 4 large plants. No problem. Yesterday we took the curved center section of a vintage sectional sofa to be repaired. It fit with no problem and there was plenty of room to spare which could’ve accommodated more stuff. So... Moving across country? That’s what U-Haul is for. For normal ‘daily-living’, there’s PLENTY of cargo space in the fun-to-drive CX-5! 7-weeks in and I’m still amazed by the level of refinement, handling, sound dampening and yes - luxury with which Mazda has infused this compact SUV. I’ll be perfectly content leasing this gem ...until the re-vamped CX-9 hits the streets! My partner is seriously contemplating trading his ‘17 Mazda3 Grand Touring sedan for the new 3 hatch this summer, making that our 5th Mazda!
yep - the Rav is fine if you don't care about the driving experience and only want to take kids to baseball practice - extremely disappointed by the 2019 Rav - but I would not know any better if I did not own a 2018 CX-5 - even my 2015 Rav has a much better engine than the 2019 Rav
Have you ever driven Mazda there is no way you could possibly say that after driving one. There is no comparison to a Toyota and a Mazda. The Toyota stears like a luxury liner and accelerates like it to. Simoly horrible and I can be objective because I own both a Rav4 and a CX-5
Sofyan, you mentioned that Mazda recommends premium fuel in the 2.5T engine. This isn't necessarily true. Mazda states that at lower octane, the hp is rated at 227, despite the 310 lbs ft of torque remaining the same. At higher octane that figure jumps to a maximum of 250hp. Mazda has never said that premium is recommended or necessary, as some turbocharged engines from other manufacturers require. I know you know this however, as I have heard you state it on other reviews of this engine. Outstanding comparison review by the way.
@afarrel3195 To get the most power out of it, sure, but it will run fine on 87 octane. Some turbos from other manufacturers, unlike Mazda, REQUIRE premium fuel.
meinasalon Yet people bitch moan about the cost of luxury vehicles but will drop $40K on a RAV4. 40 grand for a loud unrefined, underpowered, and uninspiring vehicle.
People read these comments when they are shopping for cars . Just saying the obvious to us that a low trim car can be a totally different driving car than a loaded model. People should drive the very car that they are going to buy. Not perhaps drive a loaded car
Leon N not good to use a company that is paid for being in advertising. wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/30/why-consumer-reports-and-j-d-power-are-so-different/
Toyota is too because there’s too many people that know nothing about cars in general. Such as the amount of Camry and corollas on the road, because people either don’t care or they’re just boring. Same goes with these. Mazda is second to Toyota in Australia over here, but rn Mazda is trumping everything in terms of design, power and interior styling
Test driving both cars I found cx5 too cramped all over. I didn't feel a big difference performance-wise between the RAV4 hybrid and CX-5. Rav4 gas model on the other hand quite a bit slower and loud without the hood blanket (which doesn't come standard for some reason).
They should have the Hybrid XSE trim for the RAV4; that is, by far, the best looking trim and returns amazing fuel economy- two factors I believe should beat out the CX5.
uh No -- CX-5 Signature zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds - the Toyota Hybrid - 0 to 60 in 7.8 and the Adventure 8.5 - 9 seconds - even the non- turbo CX-5 is 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds
Actually the Rav is behind and was way behind until the 2019 model and also the Rav still doesn't have Android auto and the Mazda blows the doors off of the Rav in handeling and acceleration Toyota has no answer to the turbo CX-5.
Rav4 vs CR-V makes more sense. Mazda is making vehicles that are more elegant and premium. On paper kinda makes sense to compare the two, but Mazda is more for grownups. Rav4 is still trying to capture the attention of the masses.
@light house yea best selling in the USA where people are sheep and get suckered in to the "reliable car" campaign. Mazda is #1 in Australia where people are free minded and choose by the quality of the car and not because Kelly Blue Book said it's the best, which has always favored Honda. Do your own research and drive in one and you'll be gaga over Mazda.
Hi Mazda (and pre-owned) sales consultant here and owner of a CX-5. you all know the Rav-4 doesn’t even compare to the CX-5. The way the CX-5 handles and drives more like a luxury brand puts it in a class above the RAV-4 and other competitors. Not to mention the styling of the exterior and interior beats any of these other plasticy interiors and outdated looking exteriors. Maybe I’m basis but I’m around all these cars all day everyday and hear customer feedback on all makes and models you can think of. Trust me, just go with the Mazda. You won’t be disappointed.
Just bought the Reserve model CX-5 for my wife about a month ago and couldn't be happier. I didn't think I would like it so much but it is so much fun to drive and for the price compared to the RAV4, it's a steal! Toyota has gotten way too expensive. A similarly priced RAV4 was like $43k, where as this one only costs us $34k+ttl. The only difference between the Reserve and the Signature is the 360 camera and leather from what I could tell. We got everything else which we're good with. I also like the RAV exterior but it is boring to drive, costs ALOT more and doesn't even come with Android Auto.
I think a lot of conclusions are being drawn about Mazda in the comments as it pertains to reliability when we’ve yet to have enough experience or information on mazda these days to conclude it’ll be less reliable than the Toyota. Yes, Toyota’s are insanely reliable, but who’s to say mazda can’t be?
Rob G mazda are reliable too but a toyota way2x more reliable than the mazda. After market parts? any part of the world theres always toyota, toyota parts are simple but well enginered, car industry like in japan loves to copy ther parts bcus they are in demand. Resale value for toyota is high than the mazda, they are well enginered that keep them running for long on a highway with less headache. so theres no way we can evenly compare them bcus they are clearly different
Ok so Toyota sells more cars does that mean Toyota is better than a Tesla or a Porsche no it doesn't and the Mazda is rated higher than the Toyota or Honda in this year's ratings for a SUV is was #1 last year and in 2019 also
Justin Greenaway I own a CX5 and the infotainment is my biggest complaint. It truly does suck and it takes forever for the navigation to sync up. I hate it.
Not necessarily, my last Mazda had 198K on it when I had to let her go. And I drive it like I was mad at it every day, all day. Never did anything do it other then regular maintenance. The interior of the Toyota looks cheap. And if you like to DRIVE the Mazds as always wins hands down. Let's not forget that Mazda still refuses to use a CVT. Thankfully. That right there is enough to affect the reliability of the Toyota.
I own a 2015 Rav4 and a 2018 CX-5 while my 2015 Rav4 was being repaired I was given the 2019 Rav4 Limited Edition to use - The 2019 Rav4 is a piece of junk in comparison to even the non turbo version of the CX-5 - the engine is horrible - has no power at all and there is no feedback from the steering wheel. The engine is so loud it feels like the engine is going to explode and the cabin is not quiet at all. The review does not even talk about the fact that the Rav 4 unlike the CX-5 does not have adaptive headlights and it had heated rear seats. There is also No Android auto only Apple car play. The seats are good in the RAV4 but not anywhere near as good at the CX-5 and Toyota dos not even offer leather seats in any trim level which are included with the CX-5 signature edition. The Rav is even slower than the normally aspirated cx-5 and the signature edition is almost 2 seconds quicker than the 2019 Rav4.
#1 Toyota does not make a Rav with a V6 anymore #2 who wants to buy an 8 year old car with 8 year old technology and doesn't have torque vectoring or Android auto or apple car play and uncomfortable seats.
The thing with the RAV4 is it needs around 1,000 miles to break in. The engine at first did feel sluggish. Right around 1k miles I noticed a definite difference in the engine. The power is more than adequate and I personally don’t mind the engine noise. As a college student I wanted something reliable, safe, and great on gas and the RAV4 was perfect for me! Also the infotainment system in the RAV4 was a big breaking point for me vs the CX-5. Also the CX-5 needing premium gas? No thanks. I got my RAV4 XLE Premium with 4k in options out the door for 30k! Sticker was 35,228.
Any car that tops the sales chart does not live in another car's shadow. There is no better vote of confidence than handing your hard-earned money over.

The RAV4 has changed over the years .... I like the new design
I'll give a thumbs up on that what you mentioned.. but I felt same after all trims and designe body wise looks same from 2013 to 2018... bought one in 2018 XLE Premium then trade it after 1 year with 2019 XLE Premium because of the body style caught my eye more masculine off road to it... 8 speed vs 6 speed ... after having now a year.. I feel like i'm in a truck.. don't get me wrong it'[s a nice vehicle, but the dash console does not appeals as much... interior like the door has plastic feeling to it, shutting the door doesn't sound/feel solid, I've notice just tapping on the body seems thinner metal which probably made a difference of fuel ecnomy is great on it tho they upgraded the engine they say but that plays the role if your vehicle is lighter! @Sinister Veritas What mileage on it?
I still choose mazda the design is classy the driving is fun and responsive engine this would be my second car after my crv wagon
What a coincidence. Car and Driver just compared these same 2 crossovers. Outstanding review.

The car felt like our guardian. My friend turned the traction control off, stepped on the gas and it was glorious. Its just something different. Something people dont expect to see on the trails. By no means it is a real 4x4 but it still tries at its best. I wouldn't offroad a CX5 tho. It is still a nice car to drive around tho I dont hate it dont get me wrong. Regarding the engine, you hit the nail on the head.

Yuch. Stand by your choice is ok but yuch
Have you ever driven Mazda there is no way you could possibly say that after driving one. There is no comparison to a Toyota and a Mazda. The Toyota stears like a luxury liner and accelerates like it to. Simoly horrible and I can be objective because I own both a Rav4 and a CX-5
Kevin Robinson Have you driven the XSE hybrid? It’s very different. They are hard to find right now
Sofyan, you mentioned that Mazda recommends premium fuel in the 2.5T engine. Outstanding comparison review by the way.
well that means that mazda DID recommend to use premium fuel to get the best out of it
@afarrel3195 To get the most power out of it, sure, but it will run fine on 87 octane. Some turbos from other manufacturers, unlike Mazda, REQUIRE premium fuel.

greg black Like most vehicles are. A base Camry is very different from a XSE. Don’t see your point
People read these comments when they are shopping for cars . Just saying the obvious to us that a low trim car can be a totally different driving car than a loaded model. People should drive the very car that they are going to buy. Not perhaps drive a loaded car
Not drive a loaded car and maybe order a lower trim that’s not on the lot.
