Without a doubt, the DC-3 makes the list of the top 10 best aircraft ever designed, built, and flown. I count myself fortunate to have been a passenger in these birds, numerous times, back in the 1950's and 1960's. Boston to Keene, N.H., and back, and Salt Lake to Elko, and back. Great footage of this beach landing.
The old DC-3 is such a pretty airplane! The geometry is just perfect. It was the first plane I ever flew on, back in 1956. I took a scheduled hop from Carlsbad, N.M. to El Paso, TX. Quite an adventure for a youngster.
4:22 I love that flawless coordination of throttle/prop pitch handling. Nobody even has to talk about it or exchange any look, just straight up focus on the task at the same pace.
Wow this is freaking amazing! This DC3 looks like brand new! And it is amazing to see modernised (slightly) DC3 cockpit with GNS units. One or my best JustPlanes videos!!!
THE DC3 is the aircraft that as a transport in WW2 was instrumental on winning that war. Post WW2 then became the main pillar of commercial aviation around the globe. Today in 2020 remains the most reliable, trustworthy aircraft ever built.
Love the D C 3 great airplane . My father had one . He also had a Martin 404, steerman, ag wagon , ag cat , piper super cub , a champ and others . He had so many ratings I can't remember them all . I grew up crop dusting . Great memories .
Is the DC-3 the most fantastic airplane or what? For something that old flying that perfect with a fantastic pilot and co-pilot, you know that you will get to your destination safely. The GoPro is also one hell-of-a camera system. They design and build tanks! Great video and tell the crew great job!
Wow,,, what a landing. This just shows the confidence of not only the pilot(s), but the DC-3 too! That's why they were able to do that! Execellent team! Man and bird flying together!
Haha. "Will we make it in there? Oh yeah" This pilot is cool as a cucumber and gentle as a feather with that beautiful old bird. I really enjoyed this video and super glad you didn't ruin it with background music like so many others do. Those engines sound magnificent. That camera mount under the aircraft is legend too. How did that ever stay on?
Spectacular! And I love the view from the camera placed underneath. Good to know that there are still pilots that can bring it down on their own. Was a real pleasure to watch. Also the calmness in the cockpit like it was just like another day at the beach 😂
Great video , We used to land a DC-3 on a island beach called PY-DO in Korea but we had to drive a firetruck up and down the beach to check for sink holes (wrecked a firetruck while I was there) also tried not to run through water hard on the props.
It's amazing to see these planes that are getting on a bit now still doing the flying they were designed for. A truly amazing aircraft. I wish I had been on board, it looks an exciting trip. Only question I have is why they were landing on a beach in the first place? I can only think that they were running a supply run to the Lodge that was mentioned? Anyway, well done that pilot, an very gentle touch down, he has done it before, but how things will change with a bit of water around. Nice video, I would have loved to have seen it touch down on the day.
God level stick and rudder skill. Too much rate of descent the plane would ended up upside down. Thumbs up to both pilots and JP for making this awesome video available
Wow what a thrill to fly along on the DC-3!!! What a great piece of aviation history! Thank you for letting us ride jumpseat on this journey and adventure! All the best from the west coast of Florida USA!!!
Perhaps the camera locations were intentional so as to mark out the best landing spot given that has to be easier from the ground. I'm not saying that is the case, it just crossed my mind of interesting possibilities.
@@thomastucker5686 There is no question you are right. Some years ago as a filmmaker I filmed an autoration of a helicopter - the pilot said 'set it up here' and he landed on the same spot three times in a row - engine off!!!! Then we needed to film it from the air - scariest shit I have ever done. Pilot: " So engine off in 3..2..1.." and then he switched the engine off and we glided down and right at the last moment he flared the nose and we gently skidded to a stop. Pilots. Pro as F!
Right. That salt brine will have infiltrated the nacels and the wing structure. It will sit there for years doing its corrosive thing. This was a very unwise and expensive thing to do to this old bird.
Douglas DC-3, one of (if not the) best aircraft ever made. They produced a ton of them and many are still flying all over the world today. It just works!!
Don’t pilots usually land at an airport and then it’s up to you to get to the beach?!? “Naw, I’ll just take you directly to the beach.” What service! 😆😂
Wow, When I saw this in my recommendations I thought it was a forced landing. Amazing flying skills, and kudos to the DC-3 for being tough enough to do that.
Judging by the presence of gear doors this seems to be a Super DC-3/C-117? If so, it has more powerful engines and a plug inserted between the cockpit and the wings, lengthening the fuselage and correcting the centre of gravity for the heavier engines. It would also have an extra passenger window on each side (8 instead of 7 on the standard DC-3)
That was incredible. Watching from inside the cockpit I kept waiting for him to touchdown expecting this huge shake. When the outside stopped moving I thought there was something wrong with the video.
In the early 80s, I worked for Adrian Dalsey (the "D" of DHL) in their first airline adventure called DHL Air Cargo in the Hawaiian Islands. We were the premier inter-island air carrier for cargo between Honolulu and the neighbor islands with a fleet of two DC-3s and five DC-6 aircraft. What a joy it was to fly in these old - no "timeless" - air machines that did their jobs day-in and day-out. You can still find these planes flying in various operations around the world!
Just my opinion. I’ve watched several of your videos and I prefer them without the music. I enjoy hearing the conversation in the cockpit and with ATC. Great videos.
Well, that was different. But after living in Alaska for over 40 years nothing involving airplanes would surprise me. I've seen some pretty unique "water landings", with wheels.
I would add to your description that this is an DC-3S , R4D-8, C-117D and not a DC-3. In the civilian world this is a different FAA type rating than the DC-3. Only 100 were remanufactured down the line at Long Beach in the 1950's for the USN/USMC. Different engines, different wing, double the fuel capacity, different tail, metal control surfaces, gear doors, higher gross weight, retractable tail wheel. Check the FAA registry database, very few still fly. N9796N in Honolulu is one.
I did notice two things, I thought odd. First was that the mains retracted and had doors to open and close. Last was a significantly different vertical stabilizer. It seemed taller and it was squared off on top. I've never seen one in real life. Thank you for your comment and bringing it to our attention. :-)
Super Gooney! I flew C-117Ds for the last couple of years of their service in the USMC back in 1976-1978. Great airplane that I'm glad this fighter pilot had the opportunity to fly. I led the flight of our Squadron's two "Hummers" to the boneyard (DM AFB) in October 1978 when the USMC/USN program was ended. BuNo 17420 that I flew that mission had over 78,000 hours since it was remanufactured by Douglas in 1950 when we dropped her off at DM. After being sold as surplus it continued to fly in civilian service for many years out of south Florida.
There isn't a thing a DC-3 couldn't handle. There is a reason why they are still in commercial service after 85 years. What a gutsy landing, something I wouldn't even dare to try in the flight sim.
This could be one of the most amazing landing I've ever saw. I would definitely be worried about a nose over because of all that resistance on the main gear. I guess you would want to keep that tail much lower then usual. Amazing Job, legendary plane!!!!
A truly good landing. He floated it down inch by inch to a controlled touchdown. Of course, having a tail dragger always helps on difficult fields. (Double I)

Amazing, plus the short take of run with no flaps. Simply amazing

What a pilot. I've had rougher landings on a perfect day in Miami. Bravo
Just one question: WHYTF WERE YOU DOING THIS?!
It's a CV for the Medellín Cartel.
First DAMN thing I thought of when I saw them take off....WTF???
Bush pilots in Alaska taking people in and out of remote locations
They do that all the time in Alaska. Look at a map, see any highways? By water or air, even the 1500 mile road to nowhere never got there
DITTO.......................?????????
That is insanely perfect!
That cockpit is really tricked-out! I've always loved the look of the airframe.
Great video, not sure the engines, gear and airframe will appreciate the sand and salt water though!

Best part about general aviation is if we have permission we can land anywhere, as long as you take all precautions.
This is for those situations when your destination has no airports / airstrips. The DC-3 was designed for these "unimproved fields."
@@AMoose454 btw, dc-3 doesn't actually counted as general aviation by the mtow
