  • An Ocean Basin simulator is a specialized facility designed to mimic the conditions of the open sea for testing vessel builds. When assessing turning circles and zig-zags, the simulator recreates realistic ocean conditions to evaluate a vessel's maneuverability. Subjecting scaled models to these conditions provides researchers with data on the turning radius and stability during zig-zag maneuvers. This testing ensures that a vessel can navigate safely and effectively in real-world environments. We’re preparing to build up to 7 new major ferries that will enter the fleet between 2029 - 2032 on routes providing service between Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. These tests will help us determine the vessel build and hull structure. Our new ferries will be hybrid-electric vessels that are ready for full electric operation once shore-side charging infrastructure is in place.
