@M C thankfully, the crown is not a documentary, but a solid work of fiction. There may be a few jerks (namely P.Andrew) and they have done despicable things (like Charles and Camilla) but who are we to judge? Try and Google the amazing work Princess Anne has done over the years in Africa, or the efforts Prince Charles put in global warming and climate changing before it was mainstream. Who cares if they enjoy party games or countryside life as if it were 1912?

    How to play ibble dibble....
Everyone is an "ibble dibble", each person is allocated their number counting up from 1. Burn a cork and cool off to make the black marks. These black marks are dibble ibbels not to be confused with ibble dibbles.
1 person starts says "this is (their number) ibble dibble with (amount of black marks) dibble ibbels calling (someones number) ibble dibble with (number of black spots) dibble ibbles.
If you don't mess up it's then they're turn. If you pause you also loose. If you loose you drink and add a dibble ibble to your face. It's pretty simple but gets harder into the game as you must remember how many dibble ibbels on your face also everyone's sloshed 🤪. If you want to make it harder, don't sit sequentially by your number, so it's tricker to remember which number ibble dibble they are
HAVE FUN AND LIKE SO OTHERES CAN SEE 😁

It was to illustrate the chasm between Thatcher and the royals. Thatcher was not for games. Margaret wanted the Thatchers to just relax. It is quite impolite to remain all stiff and formal when you've been welcomed into the inner family circle. Sure, there is some protocol but it really is about enjoying eachothers' company. Everybody was there to relax. Not to be Royal hosts. Elizabeth was kinder about it but she also must have thought: good god, woman! We have work related talks enough as it is! This is me inviting you to my home! Relax!
It also illustrates Margarets' personality. She will tell you to relax but she won't go out of her way to make you feel comfortable if you're no fun. I think it was Bonham Carter who said that Margaret was a good time girl but she could switch and suddenly call people out on protocol she did not like.

  • @davidvinnikov9930

People misunderstand this brilliant scene entirely. Thatcher is looking at her watch, bored to tears, hazed by snobbish royals. She cannot possibly be rude to them because of their social class and the presence of the Queen. Therefore she "poops the party" by being so unbelievably slow and ponderous in her response, as to completely kill all the fun in the room and bring the game to an end. By treating the game as much harder than it is, this "commoner" makes a complete mockery of these "sophisticated" upper class people who think they're better than her - while leaving them completely clueless to it. To prove my point - notice that Prince Phillip (who is much too smart for these games) realizes what she is doing and can barely control his laughter.
Bonus #1 - she is guaranteed not to be invited to such a stupid Royal event ever again. Hope that opens this scene up for you in a new light!
Bonus #2 - when she says "calling Number 10" ibble dibble, she is deliberately invoking "Number 10 Downing Street" where the Prime Minister works - further reminding everyone who's boss.

No, you’re imagining a lot that isn’t indicated in the scene. The truth is that she took the game very seriously and was unable to act silly. She took the fun out of it, but it wasn’t her intention to insult the game or the others. The point of the scene is to show that this was who she was: serious, practical, no nonsense. She loved work, not silliness. She didn’t really mesh with that family. Different kind of person.

I actually think Thatcher fails spectacularly in this scene, which I think was the point. This is tied into the larger point that while many Prime Ministers have come and gone the royal family remains.

I’m seeing a lot of comments judging the Royal Family based on this scene. Firstly, we have to remember that this scene is fictional because nobody has ever said that this has happened. It is true that Margaret Thatcher has said she did not enjoy her Balmoral trips and it is true she did not have outdoor shoes at a certain point. What we naturally don’t know is what exactly happened in that castle. In short, everyone’s comments here merely reflect their prior judgment of the Royal Family.

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 3 года назад +6

The thing is, it's both heavily fictionalized and based in truth, from multiple sources. The problem comes in when you don't know which is which. For example, this could very well be invented entirely, or it could be based on the remembrances of one of the footmen or servants at Balmoral. Or it could be someone saying "Margaret Thatcher was never comfortable there, and never understood why they hunted or played parlor games," and the scene was written around that one single statement.
Honestly I think that they're going to have to add a disclaimer in future seasons. Because a bunch of people are not happy with how Diana's story was portrayed this year. And given that season 5 won't air until 2022, they might tell them to add extra emphasis before each episode that the show is fictionalized.

@@stevenponte6655 I wouldn’t wish to disparage the job of historians (being friends with one myself). While it is true that history is often prone to bias due to being written by people with biases, serious historians in the academe try to gather as many sources as possible as well as taking from other disciplines like archeology to better show all sides of the story. So I’d give history a little more credit.

@@raphaelledesma9393 Fair point, but I still feel there is far far more liberties taken by historians than they like to admit. Some of it conscious, but alot sub conscious. Particularly when it comes to colonial "history". But let's not open that can or worms. It is interesting though, with all that is happening in the world at the moment, I have been asking myself "what is truth"?

    *Ibble Dibble is the player.
*Dibble Ibble is the spot on the players face. (Made with a burnt cork)
You have to remember every Ibble Dibble’s asigned number & call out the number of Dibble Ibbles stamped on that players face.
If you mess any of that up
(or pause) then you must take a drink & stamp a new Dibble Ibble on YOUR face.
The person with the fewest Dibble Ibbles wins.
