I just came here to say I’m only half way done the season but Gillian Anderson is such a good actor she deserves multiple awards for this. Unbelievable.
One thing I love about Gillian Anderson’s portrayal is that I actually forget it’s Gillian who’s playing the part. It’s tricky when you become such a huge Star to sometimes be able to fully escape into a role and she’s done a fantastic job of it.
Seems Thatcher had the last laugh. Her chosen candidate won, and Heseltine lost. Proving even in her final moments, she could still deliver, a knock out blow.
Just a pity Europhile Major betrayed her on Europe at Maastricht. Wasted billions trying to stay in the ERM. Appeased the IRA and laid the foundations for the hideous Blair years

The Order of Merit is not the only award in the personal gift of the Queen: there are also the Orders of the Garter and the Thistle (the highest civilian awards in England and Scotland respectively). The Queen appointed Mrs Thatcher a Lady of the Garter in 1995, so she in fact received every award the Queen could personally give her.
Almost Every PM Becomes a Knight of the Garter or is given a peerage as a routine. In the UK many senior positions come with automatic after retirement Honours like a pension.
The date was chosen to avoid the birthday of Charles. Usually they drop shows on a Friday but that would be his BD and Netflix wanted to avoid that, given the material presented in this season
The community charge was unpopular, but it was not the reason why she resigned. Her entire cabinet was behind trying to make the community charge work, but they did not agree with her on Europe. In Geoffrey Howe’s resignation speech, he did not mention the community charge. It is also worth mentioning that Thatcher’s “No, no, no” was about Europe, not the community charge.
Well said. It should also be noted that the majority of questions that were asked of her in her final days were that of sovereignty of the pound sterling with its regard to the EEC, not the poll tax.
The problem is she did some insanely massive damage to the working class. She destroyed their prospects and left most in squalor in the north. A lot of movies about her paint her in a kinder light and if you really read up on the demonisation of the working class, you'll be really shocked the lengths of her cruelty. They had the gall to protest her wanting to shut their only work in regions and she silenced them. It was awful. People literally celebrated her death... that's how awful she was. I'm sure she faced misogyny but she herself was deeply rooted in ultra conservatism and bigotry so I wouldn't be shocked if the sexism issue wasn't that big of a deal for her.
I was thinking this, eventhough I'm not a fan of her personally. A series about her politically, and the era, merits it's own miniseries. A lot more went in in that decade of leadership.
The main problem is Gillian Anderson is too good looking to impersonate Maggie T. But I have to say she definately gave her best. Her voice was spot on.
well usually that's how it is, it's hard to find ugly actors. most have a very symmetric face...thus beautiful. not only are they selected based on that at film schools, but many good actors come from acting families that have access for good training.
Gillian Anderson really became Margaret Thatcher on her role, The most brilliant part is. You almost come to think of it as if she really was Margaret Thatcher while watching The Crown.
@@myoctobersymphony4446 and yet, after her downfall, the Conservative party hasn’t had the same amount of power if used to had before Thatcher became PM.
Geoffrey Howe and Dennis Thatcher, imo. I was kind of sad we didn't see more of the other politicians (no Neil Kinnock?) but there was a brief John Major showing near the end.
I abhor Thatcher's politics, but I found myself agreeing with her bad impression of the royal family as portrayed in The Crown. They do seem like frivolous, snobby, useless people whose strange idea of what work is, is really laughable.
The only thing thatcher was ever correct about was Europe. The last thing the vast majority of brits want is a politician as head of state. long live her gracious majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
People need to understand the Crown is not a documentary series, ergo they don't want to do things EXACTLY the same. The director has said himself that he wants to put some creativity into it. If you want to see someone that looks exactly like Diana or Thatcher then go watch a documentary about them. They can't be carbon copies. All of them are doing an amazing job.
Gillian's portrayal of her was actually very comical and exaggerated, from her posture, to her facial expressions and to her voice which sometimes sounded like a very old woman.
That's what got me. I thought it was more a caricature than an accurate representation of Thatcher. Having had to watch ole Maggie on the TV growing up, I felt like Anderson did try her best but she merely plucked some surface mannerisms and expounded upon them to the point where it felt like it was more a mockery of the original. Maybe that was intended. Who knows.
When she openly admitted to her daughter that her brother was her favorite because he was "stronger" and kept kissing his behind after he came back from Algeria, was so disgusting that I had to come here to see how she ends.
You should also know that the Crown is not a documentary about royals and it's creators had zero knowledge about margaret thatcher relationship with her family, since it's her private life. They can easily demonize and embellish certain characters, whereas in real life they were a totally different person than portrayed. This show definitely wanted to make Thatcher as unlovable, as possible.
I actually felt sorry for Thatcher in the scenes at Balmoral. The whole family were so rude to her and Princess Margaret was probably the worst of them all. I don't believe this is actually how it happened at all, but the show did write her in a more flattering way in these scenes.
Braindeficient... We got Punk and V for Vendetta... You are a soft mangy cur who maybe wasn't even born when she ruled. Give credit to the artists, Dumbydork...
Margaret Thatcher was an extraordinary woman... the nickname "Iron Lady" fits her perfectly. Unfortunately, The Crown fell short to portray her 11 years in power, there was so much material that she could be on the show for 2 seasons, imagine Gillian Anderson playing some of her battles on the parliament, or some Falkland war scenes... I missed that on the show, it was too little and too fast... almost like the producers were in a hurry to finish. Well... at least Gillian Anderson was perfect as Thatcher, she did a GREAT job and I love The Crown.
She was extraordinary sure, but she held extreme political bias and was horrible at dealing with the Troubles in Ireland, eventually the Anglo-Irish Agreement was the worst thing she could possibly do, stamping her as one of the worst prime ministers to stain the uk's history.
@@sparkequinox same. I was surprised that they didn’t delve deeper into the Thatcher years- it felt very shallow considering how much social outrage and violence that generation experienced over her policies. I guess they wanted to focus more on Diana.
Are you an ass or just an idiot? The reference to “Iron” was due to being tough. I doubt that any of the real life CROWN cast know how to operate an iron, washer or TV
Bruce Robertson: Oh Brucie, c’mon admit it, you’re still tied to Mama’s apron strings and anything that reminds you of her makes you tear up. If you don’t know, shut the fuck up. Thatcher was tough, had the balls you don’t. THE IRON LADY was always a reference to her being tough and not afraid of being challenged. If her nickname had to do with domestic chores, she would have been THE IRONING LADY, something quite different.
I think Thatcher had good fiscal policies for Britain at the start but towards the end she lost touch & refused to adapt her economic policies to the changing pressures that UK was facing that was her failure.
In my opinion that's all you can really expect. There is a reason why term limits exist in many countries. New blood and different opinions is always important. No one leader is perfect. Sometimes you need a particular person just for a particular time.
"She became an authoritarian leader" according to her inner circle. After a decade in power ,she felt that no one could challenge her and no one could get in her way. The Poll tax that she was very like to impose came into heavy criticism and objection from her own cabinet and within the Conservative Party. Despite all of that, she is unyielding , she did not listened to the advise and opinion of those around her and wants to go ahead with that anti poor legislation . Finally, ambitious men in her party saw this opportunity and took it for granted. While she was in Paris, France a leadership challenge came in. Again, she's overly confident and did not rally her party members for support. Politics is about switching sides. You can expect them to be loyal at you but not all the time.
That was a massive issue because it disproportionately and negatively affected the poorer parts of society. Say for example, everyone gets taxed 25% of their income. To someone who earns a 100k a year, they would be left with 75k which is plenty of money to pay for bills, spend and still have enough to save for the future. On the other hand, someone who earns say around 15k a year (the average lower income bracket in the UK now), would result be left with 11.25k. When factoring in the raw costs of daily expenses, you'd find that that leftover amount is ludicrously low for living expenses in a year. This means that, the poor would not be able to save any money up for the future and would be reliant on the hourly wages of their (probably low-income) work in order to survive. In times of economic hardship (of which there were plenty of during Thatcher's premiership and even before and after her reign), many workers would be laid off so the ones who physically weren't able to save up for such harsh times would literally be left starving or on the streets. From that, you can see how harmful poll tax was on the most vulnerable sections of society. To contrast this poll tax system (a type of tax called regressive tax - a tax which places the burden on the poor), there are progressive taxes - taxes which places the burden on the richer citizens. With progressive taxes, the poorer sections of society will have to pay less taxes than their richer counterparts on the basis that a.) the raw taxes paid by the poor will be significantly less even if the percentages were the same and b.) less taxes for the poor will actually give them a chance to climb up the ladder (in terms of finances).
@@kng2159 umm, that’s not how the poll tax worked. That’s just a flat tax. The poll tax was a fixed amount, no matter your income. So say it was determined everyone household in your area had to pay $500. For some that might be a night out with friends. For others an entire month’s rent.
@@kng2159 wrong example. Income tax is progressive and even more so. First 12k are tax free, then most people get taxed at 20%, those that earn twice gets taxed....4 times, 40% on twice the amount (on the marginal). The poll tax was about fairness and self-reliance. The poll tax was only for the services that the Council provide to each individual. Poor people litter as much as the rich (I have very strong personal evidence of the opposite: those that are at home dossing all day, collecting benefits leave their cans of beer in the street), so they have to pay for that specific cost, the same. It's the same as the TV licence, like it or not
Gillian Anderson is absolutely spot-on as MT, I was 29 when the poll tax came in, I remember the riots across the country, it was devastating. When Major replaced Maggie his nickname was " son of handbag.." even in a recession the Brits can find something to laugh about.
Thatcher was and is one of the very few women I respect. Apparently, she sacrificed personal time to do her homework, so she had conviction about her decisions.

Gillian's accent & pronunciation was on point but why was she made look so old? Margaret was a strong lady with a strong & firm posture but Gillian was shown to be struggling to stand up.
Because she militarised the police and turned them against the people of the country. They would cover up their numbers, so there was no accountability. She set out to destroy the threads that held people together, because that was the only way she could beat them. She destroyed society, and made money a god.
Margaret Thatcher was amazing! While leftists hated her, she is still popular among most of the people who were alive during that time. She was the British version of Ronald Reagan. While liberals in America still spew hatred against President Reagan, he is still one of the most popular presidents in American history. He won in 1980 by winning 47 out of 50 states. He won reelection in 1984 by winning 49 out of 50 states (and he only lost his opponents home state of Minnesota by about 2,000 votes).
@@lyndawilliams8434 Thatcher came to office in early 1979 on a Tory Conservative sea change because Old Labour's previous PM, had allowed a precarious wages and incomes policy that the all-important allies, TUC, never liked but tolerated it for almost 4 years because of rampant inflation, unemployment levels, Britain's perceived second and third rate economic/military status among its European and US allies. Everyone remembers UK's "Swinging Sixties" for art, music, and consumerism, but tend to forget UK stock market almost crashed in mid-60s, pound got devalued, British industrial infrastructure, plants, mills, heavy industries got older and more antiquated compared to newer, more dynamic EU economies of France and West Germany. By the early-mid 1970s, the economic situation had worsened with widespread TUC strikes, labor militancy, the three-day work week, large piles of garbage and trash remained stinking of main city centres in many British cities and towns as garbagemen went on strike. Old Labour, increasingly found it harder and harder to control or negotiate with newer, younger, militant, less reasonable TUC members than the ones Atlee and Wilson had dealt with generation before. Then there was the 1978-79 "Winter of Discontent"--a series of widespread labor and industrial strikes in almost every or part of every major sector of British economy at a time when UK was experiencing its worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. I'd compare the 1978-1979 "Winter of Discontent" and Old Labour inability to stop or manage it and its probably the worst single incident of labour unrest in modern British history since 1926 General Strike when Ramsey McDonald became Labour's first PM. "Winter of Discontent" left bitter memories and made deep, powerful scars on many individual British voters all across the political spectrum, even modern Labourites and Thatcher exploited that resentment and the perception of Labour as too idealogically rigid, old fashioned, and its affiliated organizations like Militant as dangerous far-left idealogues who would wreck the economy and nation again if elected again. Plus, the worldwide economic boom of the 1980s made her neo-liberal economic policies appear to be successful and Britain's military/defense standing had risen too, due to retaking the Falklands after Argentinian military junta tried to distract disaffected citizens from a police state surge called the "Dirty War" by assuming the role of anti-imperialists reconquering islands they'd long considered theirs since 1833 and had been (and still are) hotly disputed issue between Argentina and UK.
At the end of the day Margaret thatcher wasn’t always the best Prime Minister for the people of the United Kingdom but we can say that she changed the face and the culture and the class system of the United Kingdom for the better she strived and worked hard and she came along way from her father owning a grocery store and coming from a hard-working background may Margaret rest in peace
Whatever obstacles a person overcame to get to a position are irrelevant to how much damage they do once in that position. Plenty of leaders have come from small beginnings and been reviled leaders or hideous dictators. The reverse is also true, very few people care about the privilege a person comes from if they use that position to aid the impoverished, and disenfranchised.
Margret thatcher didn’t have a downfall, it’s was a premiership of unprecedented highs that was only cut down when the remaining conservatives in the Tory party left or were forced out the door for their opposition to the European Union..... She was quiet frankly decades ahead of her time
Thatcher sold council houses on the cheap, privatized state industries on the cheap, wasted £100bn of North Sea oil revenues on tax cuts, and then claimed there was some sort of economic revolution even though in retrospect her policies just made the rich richer at the expense of the nation. She set out to smash the unions, had no sympathy for the massive unemployment caused by her mismanagement, and didn't even care about the decline of manufacturing industry and the impact on the Northern communities it affected. The worst aspect was the "Big Bang" deregulation of the City which directly led to the reckless behavior of investment banks and the subsequent stock market crashes. Smoke and mirrors. A rather misleading summary of the events that led to Margaret Thatcher leaving office. The poll tax was certainly unpopular, but it was the ever closer connection with the EU that was the key issue.
Agreed, the handover itself was in 1997 but the talk between Thatcher and Beijing on the issue was in 1982. Too bad they don’t cover her visit to China in this season.

I did not like the way Thatcher was represented in The Crown. She was the first to understand that the government used to spend taxes not in Public Services but in the salaries from bureaucrats. There was no result oriented service and she made a revolution with the New Public Management by using performance indicators. But she is seen in the serie as a Bad Witch! I hated it... @@StimParavane What she did was to end FAKE jobs payed with the money from people! Would you like me to do nothing to economy and YOU pay me with your work? She ended the irresponsabile public money to go to parasitic companies. And this type of public money spending is unsustainable. I am quite sure you are a socialist that likes the money from others. If people want jobs they have to be productive and that was what Margaret did. All the economic rates have improved and the british companies could really compete overseas. You forget that when you defend FAKE jobs for unproductive people you are creating a sentence of death because the money will END. Before Margaret, England only took more and more money from the USA and became very indebted!!!! And who pays for that? Poor people and Real workers who HAVE to be taxed for this incompetence from Government. But for socialists the money is not a problem in their weak minds. They think it is easy to get and they don’t associate with the family’s money gone through higher and higher taxes. And also with inflation that is really worse than unemployment. I really think people who doesn’t understand the importance of REAL jobs, competitiveness and productiveness are the most destructive people who makes everybody else poorer.

I think Gillian Anderson is an amazing actor, first off. But she did not do a good portrayal of Thatcher. Her voice and mannerisms were exaggerated to the point where it felt more like a caricature than any homage to the original MT. Not sure why they ran with that angle. I can only guess that they imagined a large portion of their audience did not grow up having to watch Thatcher give her speeches on the TV and so weren't familiar with her. For those of us who were, however, Anderson missed the mark. No great loss, it was still an enjoyable watch. Even if they tried to make ole Maggie more sympathetic at the end of the day. Didn't work, unfortunately. Too many of us had to grow up under Thatcher's policies and we haven't forgotten the damage she inflicted.
She literally entrenched homophobia within our education system for decades and her flagship piece of legislation was a regressive tax policy. Not much modern about that.

You really need to have a word with your researchers: 1) The EU didn’t exist until 1993 when the Maastricht Treaty was ratified. 2) That wasn’t Thatcher’s final PMQs, she had one more on 27th November.
What caused her downfall? she had alzheimer's and was almost as gone as Reagan. As a Thatcher biographer Ive seen countless interviews and proof she was slipping during her last year. Also as a result of the psychological deterioration she saw her mere adversaries as evil and out for her resulting in her being more stubborn and irrational. She was long gone before she left Number 10.
I grew up in Rural Ireland when Mrs. Thatcher was in office and I knew at the time that she was great friends with our Fianna Fáil Taoiseach Charles Haughey - the fact that in the end she was stabbed in the back by members of her own party was repulsive, thier holding onto the same mindsets and fake ideas about empire (with similar on the left, in the trade unions and in Labour) that had made it difficult for her to enter the universities and become an MP simply because she was a woman and a shopkeeper’s daughter, the same mindsets that had crippled the U.K. in the post-war period and she did her best to change that, despite huge opposition, was something that I grew to admire and respect her for, yet in many areas of the North of England, Labour strongholds to this day, there are still many long after her passing that still hate her with an intense passion - yet her strong and uncompromising stance against IRA and Sinn Fein terrorism and protecting the Falklands was the reason why I hugely admired and respected her stance, just as much with the bully-boy tactics of the EU, which she quite rightly hated - we need a strong leader of her calibre now more than ever in the Post-Covid and post-Brexit era

Who knows.
I didn't like her walk, seemed too geriatric.

Agreed
When she openly admitted to her daughter that her brother was her favorite because he was "stronger" and kept kissing his behind after he came back from Algeria, was so disgusting that I had to come here to see how she ends.
You should also know that the Crown is not a documentary about royals and it's creators had zero knowledge about margaret thatcher relationship with her family, since it's her private life. They can easily demonize and embellish certain characters, whereas in real life they were a totally different person than portrayed. This show definitely wanted to make Thatcher as unlovable, as possible.

@Thomas Headley This is true. There is no perfect system really.
I’ve read that some reviewers think her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher is exaggerated. Well I was there, and I can assure you that it is spot on.

Wait.. what? So, Thatcher is trying to tax people the same amount regardless of their social status.. what?
