- In this video I'll explain how to earn every ribbon at Air Force Basic Training. If you think of Basic training as a video game, you'll see that basic training is just like the tutorial stage. But while there, there's opportunity for you to earn achievements. You can obtain an honor grad ribbon and a marksman ribbon if you work really hard. This is the only time you'll ever have the opportunity to get an honor grad ribbon, so make sure you give basic training your best.

hey awesome video but they actually just stopped giving the national defense medal so now graduates only get the bmt one
Whattttt. Nooooo. 🤬🤬🤬.
@@Jodywithawhy yeah Jody I’m fresh out of BMT (January 5th) and on the day of graduation they told everybody that our flight cycle is the first in the new “not in war” system.
So we all had to go into our security drawers and pass them to our dorm MTI.
That’s terrible. I mean I guess it’s actually not. Because it means we’re not in a time of conflict which we’ve been since I joined. But it’s terrible because I just made this video. 😫😫😫 lol
My son graduated Sept 28th. He received ND medal. I take they must have stopped it at the years end?
Lmao you still have a great smile
R.I.P to the National Defense Service Ribbon as of 31 Dec 2022
I graduated AF BMT in 1994. I made E-3 upon graduation. Also upon graduation I had the BMT ribbon, marksman ribbon, honor graduate ribbon and National Defense ribbon. I had quite a rack and hadn’t even done anything yet.
nice work man! any tips?
MSgt Reed. I graduated BMT this past week with the 323 TRS. It took me over 2 years to get to this point. Your videos have helped me so much in the time. Thank you, you’re doing a great thing for the Air Force!
Ayeeee. Man I remember when you first start commenting. Now you’re an Airmen. Congratulations and thanks for the long lasting support. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Wait, how can you graduate with the 323rd? They are solely for zero week. Unless, they changed. I went in this summer and was at the 323rd for zero week and then transition over to the 331st from 1WOT till graduation.
@@strumminandwrenchin9162 I'm tryna know the same thing actually. Thought Mustangs were exclusively zero week
@@KILL3R85 they are, as of now. Was told this by my MTI in July 2024. Not sure if that will change anytime soon.
When I went to basic last year every trainee that didn’t wasn’t recycled or recieved an unsatisfactory rating was eligible for honor grad. Honor grad is earned by scoring enough points on a point system instead of having your TI recommend you.
• Lack of discrepancies during your official living area inspection (Your bed and wall locker).
• Your PT test score if it’s good enough can get you points (You don’t need to score a 90 to earn honor grad I didn’t and still got it)
• Earning the marksman ribbon will get you points
• Having a leadership role such as guidon bearer, element leader, dorm chief, and chappel guide will earn you points
• Most importantly you need to get a 90 on the EOC.
Getting a 90 on the EOC just about makes you a lock for honor grad. So many people that were deserving of honor grad didn’t get it because they didn’t get a 90 on their EOC. Despite just being an okay trainee I got honor grad over said people because I scored a 90 on the EOC. There are probably other things I missed that get you points toward honor grad that I’m sure someone straight outta basic will let me know.
Unfortunately, i met most of the criteria, save for a leadership position. Did chow runner from 1WOT till graduation day breakfast chow. Scored perfect on my CATM qual, 91.8 on final PT test, 94 on EOC, and never received a U in all WOTs. Still didn’t get honor grad.
But that’s ok.
My son went through BMT in Dec 18 and the firing range was being redone and would open until June 2019. They all master the break down and put back together the M16's and did their firing range with the electronic M4s, he score a 19 on the final test. But did get the honorary medal and the BTZ nine months later. Good content and very informative for new recruits entering the AF.
Wow. He got BTZ. That’s a great achievement. Big congratulations to him. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thanks for all the advice heading to basic soon i been waking up at 4:30 am to run and workout and been studying the air force song just trying to make all the sgts job easier bc ik how hard they work
You’re already ahead. You got this. Good luck. 🙌🏽
Just scored 99.3 on my fitness. Can’t wait to ship out. Likely going to be the oldest person there.
It's cool to be the oldest. Good for you. Your maturity will be a great asset for you. I'm 60 years old and taking a college course. Talk about being the oldest! 😂
PamThe requirements for both males and females as well as the Thunderbolt and Warhawk fitness awards are listed below.

Videos like this are great resources for people about to start BMT. I learned after I started that my recruiter was supposed to have shown me a videotape about basic before I joined in '88, but he never even mentioned it. I had NO idea of what to expect. My father, who went through basic in 1948 couldn't give me much relevant information, lol.
Hey man I just wanted to say that I’ve been watching your videos for about a year now. That was when I started my process. I went to meps got tdq because of a disc hernia. Had to get a waiver (worst time if my life and I almost gave up because I was so discouraged ). 9 months later waiver approved and I ship out in June. Thanks so much for all your informative vids I watch all of them. Keep up the great content sir💪🏾
Hey the smiling part had me 😂 back in JROTC highschool My AI will try to discipline us and I could never be serious in the face But he knew that was just nerves and a sense of excitement he told me to fix that shit before the real deal Military.
😂😂😂
Another great video Jody. Really helping me prepare for the biggest step of my life
loving the consistency!
Love it. 35k+ subscribers Jody. So awesome. You’re moving up in the world 😅
You were there during the struggle. I appreciate your long lasting support bro. 🙌🏽
@@Jodywithawhy always. You’re doing a great service. I know you’ve helped me. I’m working with my recruiter now, finally got my head out of my tail and starting to cut this weight again

I went through basic in 1980. I have always been proficient at shooting a firearm because I was taught at an early age.
When I went through the firing course, I wasn't able to get the marksmanship medal because the person that had shot the weapon before messed up the sights and I actually helped the guy beside me to get his marksmanship medal.
OH! BTW! I did eventually earn the marksmanship medal.
jody being classy yet again
Editing is on point 💪🏽 always enjoy the videos !!
I appreciate the support man. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I remoted already, marched in cubscouts.
When I went to basic training in 1967 they gave u no ribbons unless u earned them , no ribbon for competing basic training , the only ribbons we got were the once in Vietnam 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
leaving bootcamp with 4 ribbons is wild. some Marines EAS with 3!
Hey Jody, love your videos and I’m going to be going into the air force reserves. I wanted to know if you could do a video about the Band Flight at BMT, as I play an instrument and I didn’t see many videos from others on it.
MSgt Reed, Can you do a video on the weight measurements coming back once more info drops? I heard it’s like army’s now.
Loving the content man!!!! 😊
I appreciate that. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I was so upset when I went to BMT I missed marksmanship ribbon by 2 points.
They the AF changed the name of the initial training ribbon to the Air Force Basic Training ribbon? When I was told to wear it years after I graduated from AF basic, it was called the initial training ribbon.
Shipping in 2 days, this video came at the right time
Ayeee. I’m glad I could help and good luck at basic. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
@@Jodywithawhy only concern is we probably cannot poop for the first few weeks cuz of anxiety hahah
Oh my god. I forgot about that. 😲😲. It definitely happens
@@Jodywithawhy hopefully we will learn how to "power poop"
Got all 4! (don't know how though...)
2003 BMT graduate here. THose M-16's were terrible, 326 TRS FLT 028. Jammed all the time. Got 30 out of 40, didn't get the ribbon.
Thanks Jody! 👍
No problem at all. 🤙🏽
i was literally the worst durin basic military training i never got along with my first flight and they were the worst i learned that i need to work on gettin along with other people 🤦🏾♂️
Yea. I didn’t get along with too many people at basic either. But then I figured it out and learned how to be more friendly. Lol
@@Jodywithawhy oh wow! ok! nice! that’s great sir!! lately i’ve been workin on my people and leadership skills and bein the sarcastic and rude person as i was in high school wouldn’t get me anywhere in life! i heavily changed thanks to my new family in the Air Force and in my squadron and in my wing!! lol 😊
Hey Jody! Thank you so much for your time creating this content. It's been incredible having this resource in getting prepared to join.
I had a question I was hoping you could give insight on. I want to join for several reasons, one of those being I want to help put my wife through college. It's my understanding that airmen get education benefits and their spouses as well, or only if the airman gives up their own education benefits (which is fine by me, I've had my chance at school, it's her turn for her dream). I'm also confused about when she would be able to use those benefits. I read somewhere she could only use them 6 years after I join?
Hoping you could help me clear things up on benefits that spouses are entitled to. Thank you Jody!
Thanks for your support. You are correct about the 6 years of service. But even after 6 years, you have to commit to another 4 years to transfer the benefits.
Your wife can start using them immediately as well once you reenlist for 4 years.
@@Jodywithawhy Thanks for the confirmation Jody! You take care
Nice as in the early 1980's, there were ZERO ribbons that could be earned. There were no Marksmanship Ribbons for firing the M-16 the entire time I was in. There was 'No Honor Grad either', only an Honor Flight.' My Good Conduct medal was my first ribbon and medal and that was years later. Funny as also many years later, when the BMT graduation ribbon was added, I received it some 10 years after graduating from BMT. 🤣🤣🤣
May i ask a questions?
About to have my first meeting with my recruiter this week, any tips?
I would recommend learning the process and how jobs work before you go. That way you’re already knowledgeable before you sit down. This video will help. ruclips.net/video/B8v8fBgw7H8/видео.html
0:39 😂😂😂😂stolen valor dude
It's actually a kid wearing his dad or grandfather's (can't remember) old uniform who passed in combat afair.
Don’t know what the minimum pt score for honor grad is but I got honor grad and my score was 86. It might just be that you have to pass the pt test to be eligible.
Thanks for that and congrats on getting Honor Grad. That’s awesome. 🙌🏽
Thanks Jody, appreciate all you do. Your channel has been a big help
Welp, all I earned from BMT was the marksman and BMT grad ribbon. Didn't get honor grad but thats alright.
It’s all good. Marksman is still a cool ribbon to get. 🎯
Yo Jody I’m in DEP rn man how long this process usually take to get booked a job mayne I’m ready to go
It really depends on the situation. On average you can expect to wait 2-6 months.
@@Jodywithawhy sounds good hopefully I get lucky and leave sooner than later
I have a tribal tattoo (my culture) that goes from my elbow to the front of my hand. I was 18 when I got it but I went and spoke to a recruiter about enlisting she said she could get me a waiver for my tattoo because it’s visible. It’s like a wave ending at the top of my index finger and covers the bottom right side of my hand. What are the chances of my wavier getting approved? I told her I needed time to study for the asvab so we agreed the end of march I’ll go in to take the practice test before doing paperwork. I just don’t want to focus so hard on this and then the waiver not be approved but I really hope it does 😭😭
Are u in the air Force yet ?
0:38 who is this gentleman?
Stolen Valor to maximum. Lol
Hi sergeant Joey. I would like to join the air force but I don’t have any contact with anyone from the Air Force. Could you help me get in contact with a recruiter?
What’s your zip code??
No really they give a ribbon for any thing now days 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿
I could never go to Basic because I'd just punch my TI. Besides, pizza hut pays pretty good.
Nothing but woman in the Air Force now I guess
hey Jody i have a question. i lost about 25 pounds, but still 15 pounds over my Weight requirement for my height; Is it a good idea to wait until i’m under the weight requirement to speak with a recruiter? or should i go Asap?
I would recommend reaching out and let them know how much weight you’ve lost so far. Then let them know how soon you plan on losing the additional weight to meet your weight limit. The recruiter should let you know what your next steps should be. I hope that helps. Good luck and keep going. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
