Old school. Love it. Brings back the memories.
This was a classic and takes me back. It represents a period in time for so many people!💖
This song is from a time when us teenagers listened to all kinds of music on one radio station!! Such great times! Thanks for bringing back my teenage years! Awesome voice and great song! We all loved this song!❤️
💕 Love this song. It was the First 45 record my Father ever bought me. I still have it till today. 🥰 🎶
This song was #1 in Toronto (1050 CHUM AM) on my 10th birthday (June 28, 1970) and I bought the ‘45 and wore it out ❤
I had it too. I was 9, and the 45 label was blue with the word Invictus on it. 😊
There is some mystery to this song. Some people think it is about an impotent man, while others think it is about a frigid woman. In an interview with Lamont Dozier, who co-wrote the song, he explained: "The story was, the girl found out this guy was not all there. He had his own feelings about giving his all. He wanted to love this girl, he married the girl, but he couldn't perform on his wedding night because he had other issues about his sexuality. I'll put it that way."
I've heard all of the mythical storylines as well; but never heard that Lamont Dozier (RIP) actually confirmed one of the storylines. I ask you: From which interview was this spoken?
Considering Stonewall occurred in 1969, and "Bank of Gold" came out in 1970, there is something peculiar about the time line, and the events of the world at that time
Oh, you’ve just taken me back to early 70s and 16 year old me dancing with my friends at the youth club! Platform shoes & Levi’s . Ah! Happy memories!.
I was in my early 20s. Great times for sure
This was the ultimate singing with my hairbrush microphone song!
Or Karaoke? 🎤
this song is beautiful in it's simplicity and her voice...
I`ve always loved this song! It`s actually on one of my playlists😊
I’ve always liked this song since I was a kid decades ago. She has a beautiful voice and you can hear the anguish and sadness when she sings.
I love this song and her voice.
This song hits me in such a different way💯👊💯 I can't help but smile and danceeeee🥰💃🕺 Love it❤
Asia & BJ, you’ll love her "Bring the Boys Home" !!
Absolute tune. I think I was about 12 when this came out (in England). Loved it then, still love it now
My Mum and auntie Sheila singing and dancing to this just wonderful memories
This song is talking about a young couple on their honeymoon night. He walked out of the room because he couldn’t seal the deal. And now she’s waiting for him to come back and love her like he “tried before.”
Poor guy - so the band of gold is a cock ring?!
He had to get his own room since there was no couch for him to sleep on.
This song a think broke my radio back then, it was all over AM radio all day long. There were so many great songs that year but I’m sure this made the top ten year end charts. It was such a huge it.
This is one of my favorite songs that I have loved since it first came out. It is an irresistible pop/soul/disco tune. Yes, the lyrics are at odds with the tone of the song -- counterpoint. Her husband walked out on her on her wedding night, but you've not saddened because the tune is so catchy and upbeat. Doesn't it make you want to get up and dance (I did)!
Lol, still replaying this one, I was 8yrs old when this came out. Thanks so much 😊😊❤
"May,I have this dance"(Class of 71)
A true classic..."Bring the boys home" is another great one by her.
Me and my then to be wife, in 1970 used to love this song, and we got married, and the marriage lasted, thats good.
THAT is a beautiful song! I adore the power of her voice. I have the original vinyl press of that particular album at the record shop I work at. It’s a glorious listen for sure!
Nice choice, you both! 👏🏽👏🏽💜
70's soul is one of my favorite types of music..depends on what I'm in the mood for was born in 1961 we had the best music
The only problem with this song, it's too short!! ❤
I was 6 years old when it came out, and they played it on the radio a lot.
Absolutely love this song! It pulls on my heartstrings.
I was 11 years old when this was released. I absolutely love this song
Poor guy couldn't get it up on his wedding night is what this song boils down to. Great vocals, this song is a great groove!!!
They should play it during Cialis commercials. 😊
It brings a new meaning to me since my husband has passed.
its a shame they dont make music like this anymore from a simpler time when you could actually listen to and enjoy the lyrics.
Takes me back to my high school days.
Now this is a banger!😂😂❤❤
Always played at family weddings back in the 1970's when I was a kid. Could look round the room for the women who where scowling and the ones that where dancing! Lol!
Freda is still out there singing!
A oldie but goodie. Forgot about this gem.
Omg. I remember when this came out, listening to it on my portable AM radio. Rats. I'm older than dirt😢😊
This was the Motown sound. Freda’s vocals were perfect. So melodic , so clear. This is an all time classic.
You two are so adorable together!
The five heartbeats was based on the music group THE DELLS ! THE DELLS did all
the singing in the movie !!;;
It's funny, Lol😊 that she thought this was a real group.
One of my all time favorites!
Damn I remember this playing all the time when I was a young kid and it’s funny I never paid attention to the words
I was 9 when it came out, and I just thought it was about a newlywed couple that got into an argument. Therefore, he had to get his own room since there was no couch to sleep on. 😀
Omg I listened to this 1000 times over the years!!
Brings back memories of the roller rink - great skating song!
I’m so happy to see you two young people enjoying this music! I’m in my 60’s now grew up with all this music! Keep up the great work!!!
Lead guitar (not the sitar) is Ray Parker Jr of "Ghostbuster theme song" fame. Also, Freda's backup singers are Telma Hopkins and Joyce Wilson: "Dawn" of Tony Orlando and Dawn fame.
I was a kid when this was released and I didn’t understand what it meant at the time but it’s just one of those songs that you CAN NOT turn off.
At the time, I was 9. I just thought it was about a newlywed couple that got into an argument, so he decided to get his own hotel room... Just that simple.
It happens and hurts, but sometimes it's for the best 😊 because that was the past.😊
❤ Class of 71 ❤ May I have this Dance ❤in 2024❤
This song gives me chills. Memories.
She had a timeless look and a golden voice.
Freda's label, Invictus was formed by ex-Motown songwriting hitmakers Holland-Dozier-Holland, with house band The Funk Brothers playing on it. Gordy was SO retarded not renewing HDH's contract-- Even more so when he tried to sue them for "exploiting the Motown sound" (He lost in court, but made sure he got the Funk Brothers under contract with a clause they only play for his label quickly afterwards ) Dunno why Payne didn't have more hits with a voice like that!!
I have never been a great fan of soul or the Motown sound, but I really do like this song.😊
Not at all ashamed to admit that this is my karaoke song. All love ❤️❤️❤️
A great song. A real classic!
❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶
I remember listening to this song and many many others on the radio WLS - Chicago, (am radio) in north central, WI. Sometimes the station wouldn’t come in decent because it might be cloudy or raining or snowing out. lol
This song has it all ❤ still sounds fresh. Love that old school production. Strings, guitars, bass her vocal with back ground singers 👏
I love love love this oldie ! Oh my gosh - her voice is so incredible 💥💥💥
Beautiful music, beautiful voice and beautiful lady,,,,classic
Proper Tune……Proper Music.✌🏻🏴
i haven't heard this in a long time. Love it.
Freda is so beautiful saw her in person singing this song ..so good ❤❤❤❤❤
The first song I remember by title and artist, as a young boy. I was 7 and watched Freda perform this song on Soul Train. Such a pretty sound, and a pretty lady...
70s R&B was toooo good!!! God picked the perfect decade of my birth to enjoy these sweet soul classics!!
Classic!!! Take care guys!!
Classic
Great reaction, thank you. I loved this song. There wasn’t as much emphasis of genre at the time of this song, and it was played on a variety of stations. You might like “Fairytale” by the Pointer Sisters, too. Lots of country fans did not know who the Pointer Sisters were but loved that song.
I LOVED dancing to this song !! I miss the great old days !!❤❤
Love this song.
oh gosh i loved her! great voice!
Thanks guys. Great reaction. This song was written by the Motown giants Holland-Dozier-Holland under the pseudonym Edythe Wayne after they left Motown. Freda Payne does a super job on this. Keep doing what you do.
Love this song!
"The Funk Brothers" from Motown Records doing the backing music on this one for HDH.
Freda Payne! 😍
You two are so adorable!!!
Memory memories such lovely memories one comment about the Five Heartbeats we're really the Dells the singing group back in the day they had a hit song oh what a night❤
That "Twangy" stringed instrument is a Indian Sitar- popular for a few years since used by the Beatles..
Amazing song
Great stuff you two. all the best XO.
The movie the Five Heartbeats they we're acting like the real group The Dell's.😁👍😅
This is a JAM!
When I was 8 I moved into Camelot. All my neighbors were black. And I’m incredibly glad. I’d hear these songs AT MY FRIENDS HOMES helping do their chores so we could go outside.
You’re doing some deep soul diving with this song, and I’d suggest “Clean up woman”by Betty Wright.
When this song came out it was a catchy tune learn it fast love it
That Bass Line
Love her voice.
Classic song, love this
Great choice. Great song. 👍
Check out Parliament. I think the name of the song is tear the roof off the sucker
Love this song and Freda Payne. Music was so much better then.
Good old ghost music 🙂🎶
Wow a blast from the past 👊
Memories of my childhood
Great 70s song. Belinda Carlisle covered her song in the late 80s.
A big hit song from 1970. Loved it back then still do. Unfortunately this is the only song I remember by her, very good voice. 1970 was a great yr for music.
Favorite song ever ❤️
Lamont Dozier, who co-wrote the song, he explained: "The story was, the girl found out this guy was not all there. He had his own feelings about giving his all. He wanted to love this girl, he married the girl, but he couldn't perform on his wedding night because he had other issues about his sexuality. I'll put it that way. It was about this guy that was basically gay, and he couldn't perform. He loved her, but he couldn't do what he was supposed to do as a groom, as her new husband." This was released on Invictus Records, which Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland formed after they left Motown in 1968. Holland-Dozier-Holland produced the track and wrote it with their collaborator Ron Dunbar, but because of their dispute with Motown, the H-D-H trio couldn't put their names on the label and credited themselves as "Edythe Wayne." Members of the Motown house band The Funk Brothers played on the track.
Because of the subject matter, Freda Payne did not want to record this at first. She thought the song was about a woman who was a virgin or sexually naïve, and felt it was more suitable for a teenager.
When Payne objected to this song, Ron Dunbar (co-writer of the song) said to her, "Don't worry. You don't have to like them! Just sing it," and she did. Little did she know that this song would become her biggest hit and would give her her first record of gold.
The lead guitarist on this track was Ray Parker Jr., who later found success with the theme song for the comedy movie Ghostbusters.
Freda Payne is the older sister of Scherrie Payne, the final lead singer of The Supremes. Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote many of The Supremes' hits.
Freda Payne said of this song: "It is about a wedding night that didn't work out. I wondered why a girl would have a problem on her wedding night and why they would be in separate rooms, but they said, 'Just learn it.' I had no idea that it would be such a big hit."
I liked the song when it first came out, but as a young man, sorry, I wasn't buying the premise...not with that woman.
This was the jam
In the day.
SOUL
One of my dad's faves!!
You have to do Maybe by the Three Degrees -1970 video it's amazing
