    AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on RUclips are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

    We took delivery of our new Airstream on June 30th. Pick up was delayed by one week because the dealer called the day before we were supposed to pick it up because there was a recall on the Dexter axles. So, a week later the WASHERS/KEEPERS were put on our trailer and we were good to pick up. So, you need to contact Dexter.

    We purchased a brand new Jayco 2015 5th wheel with dexter axles. The second trip we made I noticed the brake controller flashing and sending some code, pulled over to check things out. When I got to the passenger side I seen flames coming out of the hub. One fire extinguisher later, it was revealed that our axle bearings on the passenger side front axle malfunctioned. The worse part, Good Sam left us stranded on the side of the road in southwest Oklahoma and we had to limp to Duncan Oklahoma and abandoned our new 5th wheel at a tractor trailer repair center. The good news, Dexter stepped up and sent a new axle to Duncan OK and a few months later we went back to Duncan to pick it up.
    Dexter... thank you.
    Good Sam Road Side... never again.

    I had a similar problem with my brand-new camper with Dexter axles. On both axles, the wheel nuts were not adjusted correctly on the left side of each axle from the factory and were almost as loose as yours. The bottom line is it ruined both axle spindles and had to be replaced. I don't trust the Dexter assembly line anymore and the only way to ensure they are correctly assembled is to inspect them yourself. I am so glad you were so fortunate that things worked out the way they did. Everyone is safe and meeting new friends along the way.

      We had the opposite experience. We had our wheel bearings serviced and the RV shop tightened everything too tight. We were flagged down because Greece was flying out of one of our Wheels. The auto repair guy that came to help us checked and the wheel was so tight it would hardly turn so he checked all of them and they were all so tight that the tire would hardly spin. He readjusted everything so the wheels spun right repacked the one wheel with parts that he had brought and sent us on our way.

    • @jamessawyer8598
      @jamessawyer8598 Год назад

      We had the same problem with our Dexter axle on the left side. We noticed excessive tire wear on that side. The RV dealer that helped us in Dexter, MO found the crown nut on that side loose and no cotter pin installed.

    • @dross24MA
      @dross24MA Год назад

      @Fred brandon Uhmmm...are you saying the shop should have DIS-assembled it before installing it? I don't think so -- after all, the axle was shipped "complete".
      Correlation would be that we should take the engine apart on a new car to be sure the head gasket is not leaking.

    • @dross24MA
      @dross24MA Год назад

      @Fred brandon No need to attack and insult, thank you.
      Agreed, all parts *should* be accounted for before assembly.
      In this case, an axel assembly was supplied "complete" (not in parts) and installed as such.
      That understood, in my opinion the owner should not have to pull the wheel off and take the axel apart which, as you recall, was the way they verified what was wrong.

      Couldn’t check the rear driver’s side though.

    You should contact Dexter Axle and don't be afraid to contact Adam Dexter (Adam Dexter, President & CEO) directly. This is a critical manufacturing defect where someone forgot to assemble & forgot to check for the presence of a critical component, the lock ring.
    You need to have the other axle ends checked as well. Also, the axle with that defect needs to be replaced, as the spindle and bearing are compromised after having been exposed to this loose condition for an extended period of miles. You do not want to keep that axle, as the life of spindle and bearings have been seriously shortened !!!

    • @kristymichael

      Thank you for this very helpful comment! We are definitely going to contact Dexter, but I think contacting the CEO directly is a great idea! @@kristymichael Having worked in the Axle mfg. business for years in the US and Asia, I've also had interactions with Dexter and Adam Dexter. Dexter produces mostly axles for the RV market and they do not meet Automotive standards (barely ISO 9001 standards), which is concerning to me. This is a scary failure (could have caused a huge issue incl. injuries) and should be among others a wake-up call for Adam Dexter to improve quality in this company.

    I see more more stuff like this every day. As somebody who does all his own mechanical work I took my truck into the dealership under warranty for a simple tire rotation. I told the technician to torque the wheels to a 140 ft-lbs and what does he do, torques it to 220 ft-lbs. That very action could cause the wheel to come off or stretch the wheel studs. I immediately corrected the problem with my own torque wrench but I shouldn't have to do that. Double check everything that is done to your vehicle after it leaves the service bay, glad everything worked out for you folks.

Re: checking everything: A few years back I picked up our FC23 Airstream from the dealer after a brake and bearing inspection, and immediately hit the highway. Upon pulling into a campground that evening, a fellow chased us down shouting “your wheel is falling off”. Sure enough, three lugnuts on that wheel were missing and the remaining two were very loose. Checking the other three wheels, all lugnuts were drastically under-torqued. That wheel and tire were ruined, but fortunately it hadn’t separated on the highway. Lesson learned, trust no service - check everything yourself.

    What happened is that someone at the factory forgot to install that keeper on the nut. As you found out an extremely serious oversight. I would send my repair bill to Dexter as I'm pretty sure they have a warranty on their axles. As the commeneter below me said I would check all of the other axles. I also hope you changed the bearings on that axle where the nut was loose. It is also a very good idea to carry an extra wheel bearing set, complete with nut and keeper and a jar of grease with you. The job is easy if you have the parts. They can be very difficult to find on the road at times. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

    We have been incredibly lucky to get great RV service on the road when traveling. We were packing up from a stay in Carrabelle, Fl to travel to Gulf Shores Alabama when we realized that we had a leak coming from our black tank. (oh! that's where that smell is coming from!) I contacted an RV repair place in Foley, Alabama and asked if we could stop by on our way to Gulf Shores for them to take a look at it. They said sure stop by but probably couldn't take it for repair for several days. I was resigned to the likelihood that we would have to stay in a hotel until we could get the repair. We stopped by, they found the leak and took pity on us realizing that we were a long way from home (Massachusetts). They immediately repaired it for us at a very reasonable fee and just 2 hours later we were back on the road to Gulf Shores. KINDNESS plus great service! I have other stories but just wanted to share this one. We have always been able to get help from somewhere when needed!

Campground the owner told me he heard one of my wheels clicking on the driver's side while backing in. I knew this was going to be a brake shoe issue while backing up. So I decided to check it back at home the next few days.
    ......Folks, you just cant trust anything new......this wheel had so much grease pumped into it causing the rear seal to blow...ruining, compromising my brake pads.
    Decided to check all wheels which two of the three had to much grease also.
    .....Hand packed all bearings after a throughly cleaning out all the other grease in order to use a different grease and replaced the brakes on blown seal with a new backplate assembly from Redline.

    That’s for a great video. You brought out the best of why we RV. Yes, there are challenges, but also moments of great goodness. It reminded me of Diana Krall singing Narrow Daylight when she asks “Is the kindness we count on hidden in everyone?”

    So glad you safely had the problem fix, without any significant damage to your Airstream or anyone else.
    This Sunday morning, a Trailer turned over on the highway that goes through our town, blocking the highway.
    Not sure what caused the accident or if anyone was injured. It can happen so easy.
    Safe travels!

    A common theme from Dexter. I had two trailers, ATC toyhauler's have the backing plates come free and take out the brakes and blow the rear bearing seal out. Still happens from time to time. This was pre covid so no excuse about that being the problem. It is still happening though. Mostly the 5200lb axles. Luckily I'm a mechanic and was able to fix it on the road after procuring the parts. Glad you caught it before the wheel came free.

    Holy cats. Glad that turned out ok. Do you need to check the other ones?
    We got lucky that our entire hitch didn’t fall off after losing all the carriage bolts on one side of the hitch in Kentucky. So glad we didn’t lose the whole thing and it didn’t cause an accident, or injury. (And we weren’t using the hitch at the time.)
    Now we tell everyone to check the torque on the carriage bolts. Hitch was new, never used.
    With you on the unique cultural experiences. ❤

    Sorry to hear of your axle troubles it sure doesn't surprise me now that LCI owns Dexter. FWIW I had new drums & brakes installed on my triple axle 18k# 40TH after purchasing used from a large reputable multi location RV Drlr and drove over 100 miles and Cajun pass getting home. I decided to check the brake drag by jacking each wheel and spinning tires and was shocked to find the middle axles having excessive rocking side to side found hub retainer nut saftied with 1\4" excessive play I pulled the wheel and inspected the spindle, bearings, and races which appeared unscathed luckily most of the trip did not involve sharp turns. Needless to say the Service Mngr got a hot call and was very concerned with possible liabilities his workers had created. I always double check after having something repaired if I don't do the work myself but at 70yr young it takes alot longer and sometimes we have insufficient time. Stay Healthy Sean and Christy, enjoy your travels. LoLoHo

    The same thing happened to us while towing our 2019 Cougar, only our wheel actually did come off while traveling through Ogden, UT. Same axle-Dexter. The castle nut keeper was not installed and over time the castle nut backed off and there went the wheel. Fortunately we were very close to an RV dealer and we were able to get the parts within a couple of days and there was no damage to the axle. Keystone covered the repair/replacement under warranty. The service department at the dealership checked the other wheels and they all had the keeper secured to the castle nut.

    We had a car dealership and repair shop, and we ALWAYS checked out new parts, sub-assemblies, and of course, did pre-delivery inspections on complete new vehicles.
    Most factories are reliable, but occasionally things get missed. The most common is fluid levels: gear/transmission oil, differential oil, engine oil, hydraulic fluid, radiator coolant, and so on.
    But also there have been missing coil springs or shocks, not properly secured exhaust systems, nuts; bolts and lock-washers missing, etc, etc.

    At the AS International rally the Dexter rep told us that Airstream has about 150 different axle combinations. It is critical to check serial numbers, etc. For example our trailer has 5k# axles and 6k# hubs with never-lub bearings.
