    As you said it... It depends on what you need it for ... I'd add that in a versatility sector, there is no contest... Docu, eng, efp, studio, narrative, music video, commercials... Ursa does all of that. On the other hand, if you absolutely need something to put on a gimbal...

    I just picked up an Ursa Mini Pro G2 on an insane ebay listing, £2500 and it includes shoulder kit, tophandle, vmount plate, oled viewfinder, side recording grip and extension arm, and in real good condition too, sensor and screen both immaculate just some scuffs to the body paint. With the Pocket 4K and 6K's rigged out I got a solid 3 cam set up now. Love the ergonomics of the Ursa though, no loose cables, no faff, it looks proper. Client perception going to go up from here!

      Are u happy with the G2? I can't decide between the G2 or the 12k...If I'm interested by the 12k, it's only for the colors, otherwise I much prefer shooting in 4.6k (I think it's the perfect resolution).

    • @alanlavery
      @alanlavery Месяц назад

      @@JeanSebastienLEGER I am very happy with it, it's great. But if you're concerned about the 12K only because of the resolution I would still get it, because you can shoot in 8K or 4K without crop due to how the sensor works, and in fact it's better as you vastly improve the sensor readout vs when shooting in 12K, so the rolling shutter is almost non-existent.
      I do enjoy the 4.6K file sizes though.

    • @JeanSebastienLEGER
      @JeanSebastienLEGER Месяц назад

      @@alanlavery Yes but I saw that as soon as we shoot in 8k, we loose dynamic range and even more in 4k. I downloaded some footage from the G2 and 12k, and I prefer the footage from the G2 to be honest, it reminds me the Amira/ALEXA Mini (more organic).
      And does the colors are different even if we select Gen5 afterwards for the G2(Davinci)? I check on RUclips to see if it was the case, but I didn't find any comparaison between the two (in Gen5).
      Also, I found an used G2 (full package) for 3.2k €. At that price, it's hard for me to justify the price difference for the 12K, but maybe I'm wrong.

    • @alanlavery
      @alanlavery Месяц назад

      @@JeanSebastienLEGER I think you'll be happy with either purchase, so it's really up to what you'll use it for. If you found yourself preferring the look of the G2 then it's a no brainer at the price you can get it used.
      It is the first time I've heard about the loss of DR when shooting in lower resolutions than 12k, but if that is what you have determined from your testing, then I can see why that is an issue. I'll have to look into that, I've never used it myself.
      Colour is subjective but I've heard the RGBW sensor on the 12k is more true to life with its colour representation, and in particular resolves black skin tones a lot better, which is why the Director of Rise (Disney+) chose to use these cameras. That doesn't mean that for what you're planning on using it for the G2 could be better.
      In terms of the Gen4 to Gen5, as far as I understand it, if you're shooting in BRAW it doesn't matter, it's not changing the information the sensor captures, only how it's displayed in your editing program. It's not changing the colour of your camera just the starting point, and generally people prefer Gen 5. I always stick to Gen 5 in the edit.
      The problem arises when you're not shooting BRAW, you only have Gen 4 colours in camera which will bake in to your Prores files. But I assume you don't care much for Prores otherwise you wouldn't pick the 12K anyway.
      You're also a bit stuck with Luts as if you edit in Gen5, there's no way to preview luts in camera for Gen5, your luts need to be created with Gen4 in mind for previews.
      I was worried about the low light performance of the G2 but I happily filmed in in-door events without much of a problem. Keeping it at native 800 ISO at all times and adjusting with NDs when needed. Just avoid 3200 ISO like the plague, and try not to shoot 1600 if you can help it. If you need ISOs like that better to just get the Ursa Broadcast G2 which uses the same Dual Iso 6K sensor as the Pocket 6Ks, (or just get a backup pocket 6K for those scenarios, which I do have, being sold cheap on ebay these days too full rigged kits).
      In that regard it might be better to get a second hand UMP G2 and Pocket 6K for the price you would a UMP 12 anyway. Ofc I don't know what kind of work you do, I get enough corporate work where 2-3 cam setups make sense for me and I just have the UMP G2, pcc6k and pcc4k for that.

    • @alanlavery
      @alanlavery Месяц назад

      @@JeanSebastienLEGER Just a second short comment to make though, the 4.6K does have a bit of Moire I've noticed (compared to my pockets) so I'd suggest buying a RawLite OLPF mod to install in it. it's about 420EUR. I still need to get one, it didn't affect my work so far but, from youtube tests you get much deeper blacks also and it's a worthy investment.

    I bought the original Ursa in G1 years ago. I loved it so much that I bought the G2 last year. For the price, there is nothing out there that comes close. It is a criminally underrated camera for no other reason than brand pretentiousness. I was on a feature where one of the sdi ports stopped working. The other sdi port was being used by an external hdd recorder. Since we didn’t have cfast cards, we were able to finish the day by recording to high quality sd cards. The G2 even offers further redundancy by being able to record to an external usbc drive. No other camera brand offers that kind of life saving redundancy. The images it puts out and the flexibility of braw make it an exceptional camera in 2024. I have been able to purchase RED cameras in the past but have opted to go with Ursa Mini’s. You just can’t beat the images and features for the price anywhere. I hope they release a smaller boxed version in 2024 🙏

      I used the 4.6k G1 on a few shoots when the client couldn't afford a Red and I was always very happy with the results. It's hard to articulate but there were certain situations in which actually liked the "look" of the Ursa Mini more. I preferred the RED's dynamic range and resolution but I think I actually liked the skin tones of the Ursa when under soft lighting. Of course, I never did a like-for-like comparison because I used them on different projects so maybe the skin tone thing is in my head. However, since purchasing a BMPCC6KPro and using the 6K2Alexa LUT, I've once again felt that preference for skin tones. To be clear, I still really love the colors RED produced once they switched to the IPP2 color science but there's something I really like about the "feel" of more recent BMD cameras. Something that reminds me of the Alexa look.

    Is it likely that Black Magic Design will release a new generation of this camera now in 2024?
    After being through both screenwriting school, film school, acting school and a B.A. in journalism and reporting I think this camera might be a great choice for me to do both short reportage and documentaries around town as well as short films and acting monologues.. But I see it has been around for some time now.
    Shall one wait and expect to see an updated model of this camera or shall one go down in price and get the new box-shaped camera, the Micro Studio camera G2?
    I grow up as a reporter, and journalist student in Washington D.C. doing internships all over town, in the National Press Club, Capital Hill and so on. I am very used to run n' gun.. I also worked with the smaller mirrorless cameras, like the Gh3.. but it was a heck of work...
    So am used to the good feel of a camera over my shoulder and a great viewfinder...
    But I am open to re-think in 2024 what might be best. I see Panasonic has made some in comparison to this one smaller camcorder like the HC X20 for example...
    - are they worth it as they are at half the price of this one for the type of work I like to do?
    Anyone that tested a variety of cameras and has been around on different types of jobs who please can advise me on what to choose in 2024 and forward...
    I want a camera to get started on but think is good if I can also make money of it, meaning is professional to the level of the present requirements needed for today's market.
    thanks :)

    Awesome comparison, this is the video i was looking for ! I recently got the 6k ff as well and i also have the 6k pro. I was thinking about selling the 6k pro to get an ursa g2 since it can be found for a good price here in brasil (a used kit is around 3,5/4k dollars).
    Having a better body is becoming a higher priority on my jobs and i think the ursa, despite being bigger, it's more organized, faster and more balanced when rigged for commercials.
    I also have a couple things i would like to know, Do you think the G2 suffers from IR pollution with its internal ND's like the 6k pro ? Also in paper, the G2 has 15 stops of DR while the 6k ff has 13, do you think those 2 extra stops is noticeable (or even real)? One last thing, does shooting in Prores 4444/XQ, helps with DR and also color grading ?

      The G2 has some IR pollution but not as bad as the 6K Pro, When using the pocket 6K pro with the G2 i defo felt like the URSA had more DR but now with the new Full Frame am not sure, think its more todo with how contrast is applied straight out of camera, and i do not shoot Pro-Res much, but when i have i do not see any difference at all, i actually find BRAW to be better than Pro-Res although much smaller file sizes and a lot of people seem to disagree with that.

    placing one camera at ISO 400 and another at 800 is a mistake when comparing dynamic range for two reasons. One, there is no native ISO when shooting raw. Two, the middle gray is shifted, giving the 800 a one stop advantage in the highlights over the 400. This is why it's better to shoot both at the same ISO

      @@Annonymousoctopus Correct. You can test this yourself. Shoot some footage at ISO 100 then shoot the same scene at ISO 1000. In post, bump the footage on ISO 100 to ISO 1000 and you'll see that both images will have the exact same noise in shadows and the same clipping point in the highlights. The reverse is also true, so if you bump down the ISO 1000 footage to 100, they'll behave equally. It's time that people unshackle themselves from ISO values when shooting raw, and pick the best one for each scene

Therefore if you shoot in something with harsh sunlight, capturing at higher ISO values (800, 1000) benefits the image more than shooting in lower (400), as it gives in greater highlight sensitivity.
