    When yall joke about skipping to Kristi part, it's true! This channel is the best of the hi fi review channels, because the level of production is cinema-like level, but also no one has a Kristi! I watch yall videos all the way through, but I'll admit, I'm like, "let's hear what Kristi thinks." To me its the best and most unique part of the videos. I'm glad to see reviewers raise the standard for what to expect for your hard earned money! After all, sound doesn't happen at all if you are unable to connect your amp to any one of the many sources that are now available & may be preferable to you at some point. It is a different universe than the one that created the minimalist approach many of my generation had reason to value or do value.

    This amp together with the Wharfdale Linton's are on my wishlist for next year. Should look and sound great with the rest of the silver and wood vintage gear. Especially with the Linton's regularly coming up second hand for €750 with the stands. The Mk1 Technics was available last month for as little as €1695 but you're right, they seem to be sold out everywhere.
    I'm using a low-powered mini-pc as my media center and streamer so the USB in is required.

  • @Argo16x

    I bought one SU-G700 MK2 on eBay some months ago. The seller asked a base price that was much less than half the price for it new and proved that the amplifier was acquired 10 days before he put it on auction. Everyone thought it was a "brick" (mee too) and I was the only one to offer the base price and got it. It was a brick, in the sense that one of the Line 2 analog inputs was not working at all, no sound (shame on the seller) but... I'm an electronics guy so got the maintenance manual (that simply says: "if you have this problem swap that board, if you have that problem swap the other board"), checked the main board with all those little smd components, almost ready to swap the Burr Brown adc when my eye fell on the input connector... and... I discovered that when the connector was pressed on the board, during manufacturing, the central pin did not go through the hole in the board and was everted (shame on Technics Q.C.). The easiest repair of my life, with the added bonus that I didn't have to change any component. So I became the happy owner of a, perfectly functional, like new 700MK2 at a low price.
    This long preamble to say just one thing I don't like about this amp. The USB input is not compatible with Linux; everytime there's a sampling change from one song to the other, you have to push play again on your device to play the song. That means no Volumio/RuneAudio/Moode/whatever on Raspberry Pi without a coax piggy board. That's what I hate most about the Technics.

    Mr. Robinson, I hope you read this! Thank you very much!
    I also posted on your Technics SU-G700MK1 review. I felt it best to also share here for folks wondering how a SU-G700MK2 would push Polk R700's since I have both connected, and that was my biggest question going into this project at home. I sincerely hope that's OK. Thank you.
    I bought the Technics SU-G700M2 two channel amp after watching your video(s) and paired with new Polk R700's (also reviewed by you). Then I connected up my near-mint Vintage Technics SL-QL1 Linear Tracking turntable, added in a new OEM (vintage) Audio Technica cart with frequency response of 5-35,000 Hz. Holy Cow! WOW! Dang! Everything you said about both this amp and these speakers speaks the truth, as you would say, "full stop."
    I have friends come over that listen for hours and say how quiet, how nuanced, how silky smooth the sound is...and as you pointed out, neutral. I will say, I have never been a fan of neutral myself at all, until now. I actually get all giddy waiting to play a new piece of vinyl...how absolutely controlled, yet dynamic the sound is. Never harsh, never brash, never boomy. Just...sounds...amazing. It's that good. At least for me and my setup. I play a variety of music and this system just owns it. I do customize the tone at times of course because, well that's my taste.
    Does this paring call out bad pressings/recordings on records. Oh yeah, for sure. But the flip side is if you have a nice piece of vinyl (recorded from the master tapes)...holy effin cow. I mean...it goes to another level of fidelity, clarity and also, silence!
    For those wondering if the Technics SU-G700M2 can push these R700 speakers (which was my biggest concern), the answer is a non-hesitant YES! Not even remotely an issue. Keep in mind how large a room you wish to push these through, as with any setup. I also ran the LAPC again after a 200 hour break in and the sound change was noticeable, yet subtle, and it was better! I am very happy. :) Any questions, feel free to ask folks...

      I feel excactly the same way ... so clear ... people come by and listen to vinyl on my system and are blown away. But the vinyl pressing makes a HUGE difference. I have mine paired with Sonus Faber SonettoIIs and a REL Tx7 Sub ... (I bought the Sonettos for the boost in the mid to high, as I am getting older and those frequencies are starting to be a bit harder to hear) But I have hooked a few pairs of speakers to it and it had driven anything I have hooked up after LAPC

  • @wallypig
    @wallypig 2 года назад +2

    I currently own this amp and have found the following. Pairs exceptionally well with the LS50 meta’s and kc62 sub. This is the third amp I have tried with them and this combo is night and day better than the others. I also have a pair of Cornwall 4’s and I didn’t find that pairing quite as good. I do have a problem with the amp shutting off periodically. I can’t imagine it is overheating as it runs quite cool. interesting comments about the phono stage. I was thinking it felt like it was “cleaning” the input and your comments seem to align with that. I haven’t been able to get over the psychological hurdle of knowing my analog signal is being digitized.

    Because of the supply chain issues I had to move on from my visual amp crush, the SU-G700 MK2, and ended up buying the Marantz 40n… and I am very happy with how it turned out, especially with the built in streamer meaning I didn’t have to but another piece of equiptment. I. used that money to justify spending extra for the Kef KC-62 sub to got with my system (and Zu Omen Dirty Weekend 2’s). I absolutely love the warm and detailed sound that comes from the Marantz setup, and when I compare it to my bedroom setup (Peachtree Gan 1, blue sound node with Lii Audio F15 open baffles) that uses a similar all digital type of setup as the Technics (and one day will get a sub BTW) I prefer the Marantz more warm and musical sound, but appreciate the level of clarity and detail I get from the Gan 1. But I feel like the Marantz 40n setup punches way above it’s weight class and is so easy to listen to for hours because of how warm it sounds. Thank you for reviews, when you do the comparison vs. the Marantz 40n make me feel like I made the right decision!

    I’ve currently have my MK2 in silver and had previously owned a MK1 which I could only find in black, so I returned it over the color. Connected to my Tekton DIs I’d say there is a noticeable sonic difference. I felt like the Bass is a bit more prominent and punchy in the MK2. However I felt that my old MK1 had a wider sound stage and was a little more enveloping. The MK2 still does enough of the magic for me and I still think it’s one of the best looking integrateds ever. I love the amp and your review as well. May have try out some Concept 50s though.

    Good day. I think Technics is a great amp only if your goal is strictly for music listening. I wasn’t surprised by the slight upgrade. The only time I can really remember a huge change was with the SL1209 turntable. There was a big difference between the original SL 1200 and the SL 1200 MK II. After that, each iteration got slight improvements. However, if you step up to the GR line there is a huge difference and price to boot. I guess it’s the same here. Great review but choice my would be the Marantz because of their “ house” sound.

    It's always good to be patient, I think I could fall in love with the new Hifi Rose RS520, hdmi and you can even connect a cdrom drive to rip your cds and of course that huge touchscreen...I would still love that Technics even if my first Technics had lots of static in the volume knob and it was hard to get rid of but considering I love music from the 60s more, it's probably too clean for many albums, thank you again for this review!

    Also-
    Would never want streaming or Bluetooth in amp at this level. Definitely want to do that separately.
    What would be nice is an input for external DACs because otherwise it’s slightly hamstrung for upgrades unless you are keen on AD then DA and AD again 😒 and if I were to guess, I would think the two weakest links in this amp would be the WPC and the DAC (former isn’t an issue in my use cases, latter not an issue but would like the option). Obv my preferred option is likely impossible or at least ridiculous for the architecture so Technics might want to make the mk 3 DAC knock DA conversion out of the park. Add a crazy next level DAC in exchange for the internal phono stage and they might have more than a fringe product on their hands

    Brilliant video, very entertaining. Loved all the comparisons as usual, i think it allows all to get a real sense of the different options. It’s great that the right speakers paired with 700 mk2 can give the higher amp a run for it’s money.

    I’m new to hi-fi and cannot wait for your take on the Arcam sa30. I trust your views on av products and the way they are delivered in lay terms that we can all understand!
    I recently purchased the sa30 and focal aria 926 speakers- in my inexperienced view- both fantastic!
    Still haven’t set up Dirac but I’d love to hear you guys speak about it. I know the sa30 isn’t the best stylistically, but it is a powerhouse and has many features with a great sound.

    I have this amp, may be the final amp I need, I have a tube amp when the tube bug bites. Completely agree with the review and the sound is perfect for my needs. Would just add I do not have both speakers equidistance from the amp and my listening position (why would you not sit next to the beautiful meters :-) ) and LAPC compensates for that which is great.

    Good review! I was lucky to get a mk1 on sale, when the mk2 came out. I absolutely love it, and it pairs well with my high sensitivity 8” Seas full-range (“hot-rodded” Pioneer AS-R500) and my Def-Tech D11’s. One thing that is never mentioned in any reviews I’ve seen/read, is the fact that the VU-meters are connected directly to the main outputs, and thus they are not active when listening over the headphone-section (which is pretty good as well, and should be mentioned!)

    $2700 for no AirPlay, Bluetooth, HDMI? Very good looking and sounding for sure, but the missing features in 2022 is a missed opportunity for Technics. 😢

  • @PhilWimble

    As someone who loves my original SU-G700, I felt my cynical side come through with the mk2. It just feels like a rehash so they could cut costs by using the same components across two product lines and stick a few hundred quid on to make a bit more cash…
    Love my Mk1 with KEF LS50 Metas though!

  • @bzdtemp

    On the HDMI thing.
    Totally speculating here, but could it be that the DA in the Technics uses a memory buffer to combat jitter and more. If so then that buffer ads a short delay to the sound its feed, that could mean a HDMI input would be useless as audio would not be in sync with the video source.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 года назад +1

      It is possible I guess but I highly doubt that's the reason for the omission of HDMI. Using the optical while watching movies/TV everything is in sync with no delays. My hunch says the lack of HDMI is purely a cost saving decision.

    • @bzdtemp
      @bzdtemp 2 года назад +1

      @@andrewrobinsonreviews If there is no sync issue using another input then my theory is 100% out the window.
      In that case I guess for some reason HDMI just isn't on their radar, as the cost saving must be tiny - unless of course their internal design somehow don't allow for one more connection, so adding HDMI would require them to do substantial redesign. Maybe they only think audio in form of music and not video.
      PS. Thanks for another good review. Even though I'm currently not really looking for much gear I find my self being a regular viewer, then again I also read Stereophile 🙂

Did you plug the amp directly to the wall or was it through any power conditioner ? Quick Q: would it be possible to use the Technics as a power amp with the NODE as HDMI-enabled preamp?

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 года назад +3

      You can use a NODE with the Technics (we did). I recommend using one this way. Use the node as a digital source. Inside the Node App set the volume to fixed. Connect it to the Technics using an optical or coaxial cable. Control the volume on the Technics.

    If this converts everything to PWM why pair a SACD player with it? Their own SACD player doesn't convert DSD to PCM prior do the analogue output. If I use this player with this amp everything will be amplified as PCM effectively rendering the SACD/DSD format inconsequential. Am I missing something?

    One big one in the same price class yall left out is the rotel 1592 and yall loved the 1592! Rotel or g700?

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 года назад +2

      The Rotel 1592MKII definitely has more power, and that is going to potentially be heard most in the low-low bass notes (provided your speakers can play those notes). From a functional standpoint, both amps offer much of the same features so it's a bit of a wash there. If you need more power for really difficult to drive speakers, or you simply like to listen at loud volumes on difficult to drive speakers then the Rotel may make more sense, but sonically, there is an element of finesse and ease to the Technics that is hard to quantify, which you can hear in our voices at the end. I personally prefer the Technics, but could make a case for either.
