Man if you ever get chance to try out Minidsp products do check SHD as a standalone DAC/Preamp instead of just a DSP. That be crazy. I think now it also Roon Ready now so it be interesting.
So impressed with the direction that Technics is going. SU-G700 was on my short-list but was missing some of the features that are in the GX.... man if they did a blend of the 2 with the amps/meters of the 700 and the streaming/HDMI/App capability of the GX-70 it'd be THE PERFECT modern piece with retro flair out there at any price.
I’ll always have a soft spot for Technics, since I’m still running my dad’s SA-5550 in my office. I’m just a sucker for silver faceplates. All the best from Ottawa 🇨🇦
I decided to give this a try largely due to this review, and I’m glad I did. Sound quality is sublime - and a huge step up from a Sonos amp (no surprise). As the cliche goes, I’m hearing things in my favorite tracks I’ve never heard before. The nuanced little details that come to life with this amp make it such a fun listen. Happy to report it’s been driving my 8ohm / 89db tower speakers with ease. I find I prefer the space tune measured correction with music, and with movies I like the thicker sound I get with space tune set to “wall”. All in all I’m very happy.
That little 1/4" port of the front of the Technics is something special too. I've never heard my Focal Clear Pros sound better than when plugged into the GX70.
Wonderful presentation as always -- I love the way you approach audio with the passion it deserves. Your descriptions of the product features are on par with the best sportscasts -- the natural cadence and communication style really bring your reviews to another level. As for Technics they're worth every dime. I bought a Technics MASH CD changer way back in 1992 -- it still gets used every day.
Really strange me to that Technics hasn't developed a version of their Audio Center app for Android users. Android use is 70% of the global market (and I'm one of those users). Stranger yet is the Technics SU-GX70 offers Chromecast Built-In (unlike the Yamaha RN1000A). I don't understand why any company wouldn't follow-through and offer apps for both mobile platforms due to the risk of alienating current/future customers.
There is an android app... It might just miss a couple of features that the iOS app has. Android app has Space Tune, but might a have a couple fewer options.
@@anthonystephenson7659 Thanks for the correction. I was under the impression through some forums and videos that Audio Center isn't available for Android. I see now that it is available but that they're talking about the missing app features used to have full benefit of the SU-GX70. Although, if I bought this receiver as an Android user then I'd still be in the same place...disappointed and mad that Panasonic/Technics hasn't made available all the features for my phone as they did for Apple users.
@@BryanRuby Yep, most reviews don't really make it clear that there is an android version available. It's a shame the android app isn't the full featured version... Sonos are guilty of this as well. I think these tech companies assume anyone who can afford high end audio also probably buys an iPhone. Frustrating for us android users.
Thanks for the wonderful review as usual. Seriously debating between this and the Marantz 40n…but also wondering whether a G700 mk3 might be on the horizon so I could have these features plus the sexy meters. A G700 with the room correction and HDMI from this model would be a dream component
Thanks for another great review. And based on this review, I bought one! Given Technics gave 15% off with a trade in, it was a no brainer. And everything you say is true. The level of detail. The amazing stereo image. The bass. Oh, the bass! All at a reasonable volume. And for anyone who doubts the value of room correction, I was shocked at how bad my room was and the difference Space Tune made. So much so, it’s given my speakers (Linn Ninkas) a new lease of life.
@@andrewrobinsonreviewsjust to add some spice to the value of Space Tune, I heard a few of my “go to tracks” through the G700 and Mission 770/Wharfedale Lintons before leaving the store. So what a surprise, with all technology in the GX70 engaged, my system at home lost nothing discernible to the heavy hitters in the store.
Good Morning and Happy Sunday! Thanks for your hard work on this review. I love the clean look of this unit and the fact that it has so many features (including room correction). I was surprised by the power rating (30w) for the price, but there is a lot to be said about clean power! I especially appreciate that brands are starting to add room correction as standard fare to their products.
Amazing as usual, love the tone, and the energy in your videos, keep up the good work. I am wondering if you guys are looking to test some Lyngdorf products, as they do have an interesting heritage and positioning with their room correction. Plus the 1120 seems to be similarly priced to the Technics. What do you think?
I read that Technics worked hard on getting a clean HDMI signal before implementing it. They found there was too much video noise riding along with the audio HDMI and finally found a way to defeat it right at the input on the SU-GX70. They should now be using it on all future products. I wonder what other makes just settles on letting the noise infect the sound or are even aware of it.
It's a brilliant solution. I was the first in Denmark to give it a go. And I have the technics su-r1000 as a daily driver.. Really thinking about getting this one for my lounge ❤🎉❤
Tricky decision here. In Australia the Yamaha R-N1000A is $2300, the Technics SU-GX70 is $3200 (!!!) and the NAD C399 (with BluOS module) is now $4000... And the R-N2000A is also $5000.
Well…I just *knew* this would be special. Might take a bit of time to budget this puppy in, but clearly a most-welcome entry in an increasingly-pricey field. Well-done again, you two!
Dear Andrew and Kristi, thanks for another nice review! I was curious, how does the Technics gx70 and Audiolab 6000A play compare from a sound quality perspective? Dear regards, Perry
This is a awesome review! I'm wondering, what's your opinion of how this compares to the Yamaha R-N2000A? Both sonically, and feature wise? The Yamaha was my goal amp that I've been saving for, but it's double the price. Is the Technics really as good for half the price? I currently have some Focal Chora 826's. These are pretty easy to drive, and I do like the slightly brighter sound of them. Do you have any thoughts on which of these amps might possibly pair best with these speakers?
Hi, I'm in this hobby for way more than 50 years now and I've been watching your great videos regularly, just not so keen on commenting. But I've seen here that some were upset because it's an all digital amp, especially for LPs. Well, I have recently watched a good video on RUclips explaining that most of the vinyl records are either recorded or mixed digitally, so there has been conversion to digital somewhere in the process. So this being an all digital amp really shouldn't matter that much, as long as it sounds good, which obviously it does. Plus, digital technology has come a long way in decades. I have some of the SACDs that sound very analogue, at least the same or even better than the same LPs that I've had more than 40 years ago. And not just SACDs, also some of the "digitally remastered" CDs sound very analogue, too. So the amp being all digital internally is probably more of an advantage than a flaw. Thank you for the review and keep up the good work!
I totally agree. Turntables are great because of how they get you to interact with the music, it has nothing to do these days with sound quality, which is much cheaper and easier to do well with streaming or CDs.
@@nathanielFalck Yes, the way you interact with the music really is fantastic when it comes to LPs, but it the love for it also has to do with sound. You can get a different sound from LPs and tailor it with different needles etc. Not that it sounds "better", but different :) And yes, I too don't think that the all digital solution in the SU-GX70 is bad in any way.
I purchased Heresy IV because of your enthusiasm for them! I still own them, love them and use them in the living room with the NAD c700 . I replaced them with La Scala’s, love them more than the IV’s. Do you think the Technics could replace my McIntosh c50 preamp and mc352 amp, my WiiM pro streamer and Denafrips Ares 12 DAC and sound just as good? I am tired of all the clutter in my rack! For vinyl I have a VPI Prime with a MC Ortofon Quintet Black which I think I could replace with a 2m Black no problem. For SACD I have the Oppo UDP 203. I would miss the blue meters, but not the clutter. Thanks for your thoughts, I think being a recovering Audiophile would be great! Thanks John
Hi Andrew, thanks for the incredible content both of you constantly deliver. I bought a Pioneer VSX-LX505 receiver and am looking for 5.1 speakers here in Europe. I watch streaming movies/series and listen to rock concerts. I checked: a) B&W 603 S3 b) Monitor Audio Silver 300 7G c) Dali Opticon 6 MK2 Which one would you recommend? Do you think they match to the Pioneer? Or would you suggest anything else? The Polk R700 are hard to find here. I would add the corresponding bookshelf speakers of each brand and a SW. Thanks for your comments keep it up and greetings and a nice Sunday from Germany 😊
As an SU-G700 owner (thank you Andrew 👏🏻)… I’ve found my missing streamer component. I’ve attached a Fiio R7 and now I get Apple Music in full high-res (track dependent obviously). Since it’s Android based I get all the lossless and hi-res I can shake a stick at and I don’t have to rely on airplay2 (which is limited bitrate) to get the Apple portion at least. 👍🏻 Love seeing Technics going for the gold with an all in one and if I had to do it again this might give me pause… but the meters!!! 😭
@@andrewrobinsonreviewsyeah I would trade up in a heartbeat if that was the case! Who knew Panasonic could bring back my fav childhood brand in such an amazing way.
Great review as always! I'm actually really surprised by this review with the Technics, didn't think that this " low power" amp could handle those speakers so well. How would you think about pairing with Focal speakers? I love detailed sound and lively.
I have a large reflective room, a set of KEF R500’s, a TV, streaming music and a box of vinyls… I think I finally found my match! Can’t wait to test this out!
Great review guys! I know you cant compare it to everything, but I'm shocked you guys didn't compare it to the Marantz Model 40n. It offers similar features at a closer price to it than the Naim Unity Atom.
Unrelated - will you guys be getting the NAD M66? Very interested to know what your opinion will be as your the only reviewers whom I trust to make honest reviews. If you still have the miniDSP SHD, man that’d be a great comparison, with and without Dirac engaged. Obviously with DLBC the advantage should be with the NAD if using subs. I also have an 8300XP and KEF R speakers, so you could in theory be testing out my exact proposed setup! So very keen to see if the M66 cuts the mustard with you both?! :)
As someone who considers myself as a victim of Jeremy Clarksons philosophy: “POWER!!!” I am truly glad that something like this exists now. Power is not everything. The quality of it however is highly important. Once my Rotel dies (pretty soon lol) I’ll definitely test this first vs everything else. And I love the design. It looks classy, yet modern somehow. What a great review guys! Hope everyone is having a lovely evening at this point!
Power definitely matters but high-Wattage not so much or not necessarily. I worry too many enthusiasts have a bias towards higher numbers without really knowing (or understanding) what those numbers mean to them versus the rest of the class per se.
Technics. You make AMAZING amplifiers! Edit***I literally just emailed Technics after posting this to throw them a complement, and they responded in 10 minutes! Improved customer service?! Kudos Technics! But in all seriousness, this is the amp for me. And it’s a freaking bargain at its full price. 1 and done. Heck of an episode this week, thank you for all the hard work. I have no idea how you fit it all in while also working with Sonos this week! No rest for the weary! Kristi! What’s it like to fly semi-private?
Please see our link if you buy! :) Flying semi-private: Anything that simplifies the flying experience is a win in my book. While the plane was a little dated and not what I was expecting (or what was pictured), it still beat the heck out of going through security and having to arrive 2 hours early.
@@KristiWrightFor sure! Totally random, but I just learned that Crutchfield sells out PetSafe pet supplies! Who knew? I’ll use the affiliate link to buy that stuff too!
A very intriguing looking integrated. For me room correction is an absolute must in my next amp as my room and speaker placement isn't ideal. I wonder how the correction compares to Roomperfect on the Lyngdorf TDAI 1120, which seems on paper to be more advanced. A really helpful review, thanks both!
Is there a better integrated amplifier for about $6K or less that’s a far better buy vs the $2K Technics GX70? With or without digital and or streaming… just considering audio quality and speaker power quality.
I am so happy that you two reviewed this unit. I am going to have have to save some serious cash for this integrated amp because I think that it will be perfect for vinyl and cassette. I miss my old Shure V15 cartridge and it would be great to listen to a modern replacement. Do you have any recommendations as to cartridge and turntable on a 1k budget?
This is the turntable used in the video bit.ly/3o8zC8i which retails for $499. If you using this amp with this turntable you don't have to go crazy with fancy-fancy cartridges. You could get an Ortofon Blue here bit.ly/OrtBlue and be well under $1000 and have a great vinyl setup!
This is the type of all-in-one I've been looking for. Usually, they're too good to be true. At $2k, it's a bit of a stretch for only 2 ch listening, at this time in my life. However, when I get my den, this will be at the top of my list.
Great review, again! 😊👏 How would you compare the room correction with Dirac of the Onkyo RZ50? As a candidate for my 2.0 HT the GX70 might be a better fit, if it’s room correction could compete with RZ50. My only concern is that the RZ50 might be a better option power-wise with my Wharfedale Lintons…?
On the polk r700 review, recommend powering with at least 100 wpc. For listening at moderate volumes, is this technics 30 watts enough to modify that recommendation?
Hi, I think Andrew suggests the Yamaha R-N1000A if your looking for more power (100 W) around 20 mins in the video. As for Polk R700s, I would like to know how they would match.
Love your enthusiasm Andrew , great review ! . What about compering it with Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 ? It sound there is allot of similarity’s, spec and features between the two , the Lyngdorf is also all digital amp with RP for auto EQ, DAC, streaming etc…did you tested it with sub integration for stereo listing ? I own the 1120 with Q acoustics concept 300 and just love the match.
That’s interesting. I was wondering how that amp would work with the Q Acoustics Concept 50’s. And they’re very similar to the 300’s AFAIK. And easier to drive too. 🤔 I’m actually very tempted by the 300’s too, just on looks alone. Especially with the Q stands they make for them. What a looker!!! ✌️
Great show, thank you. Looks really good that SU-GX70 Technics. However, how come the Technics only gives a 3-year warranty when Yamaha R-N1000A gives 5?
It looks sharp. It's main problem is that when you get to that $2k price tag there is a lot quality out there. I'll probably go for the "less versatile" Buchardt i150 for that money. Too many features historically translate to less in the future.
I agree with you about the names vs. numbers; names are so much more memorable, letters or numbers can be added to distinguish between iterations or feature sets; but names are so much better. Think ‘signature’ editions.
This looks to me like the future. Ultimately, Technics needs to put all this tech (maybe with a bit more power) into a line of active speakers like KEF and Dynaudio, and then you could be DONE. Just add turntable (if you like), or smartphone if you don't care about vinyl. So, that has built-in pros and cons. Pros: simplicity, automatic room correction, saving space, consistently great sound, etc. Cons: You don't get to spend countless hours reading reviews of DACS, streamers, phone pre-amps, and other compnents, or chasing the holy grail of the "perfect" amp for your particular speakers, musical taste, space, etc. (at which point you upgrade your speakers and start the whole process over again.) This hobby took off in the 1970s, when you HAD to research like crazy to improve your sound : tonearms, cartridges, speaker stands - all of it made a real difference when the technilogy was still developing at that time. We now can have perfect, linear sound, cheap, limitless power, automatic room correction, and hi-res music that only "exists" in the cloud, and you can have nearly every song ever recorded for $10/month, wow and flutter not included. The ONLY real limitation in 2023 is speakers, and even they are getting pretty damn close to perfection. I'm in.
I use su g700 mk2 and bluesound node n 130 . Great sound and very capable amp. I have few vintage amps as well and love them all but technics is a great come back . Interesting product for sure . Im now want to get Sugden a 21 se signature because i relly enjoy that pure calss A but technics will stay with me for longer !😊
Hi there! Thanks for your review. Do you think, now in 2024, still the same about the Technics su-gx70? Or is there now another streaming amp in the same pricepoint that you have the same enthusiastic ideas about or even more? I noted that this one is very good even at low volume, that is very important to me and I am very sensitive for too sharp highs. Because of hearing loss. Do you let test your ears, seems to me logical as a professional audio reviewer, ?
Thanks, looks great with the discount. Value comparison to Vincent Audio SV-200? Seem to nestle into a similar category, low watts, but big, clean sound? Package a node with Vincent or this at $1500?
Googling the hell out of my smartphone just to find out... @robinsonbrand help us here please Would have to sell my Rotel stereo amp with 200w, lol. But this Technics seems so easy to use and i could imagine my sound improve a bit Can't just "test" it on my Polk r700 Other than that as always a great video. You really influence my Hifi/ audio journey Thank you! ❤
Ok, I ordered one, it arrived a week ago, it can drive it. Solid unit. Completely replaced my 200w into 8ohms Rotel stereo setup without questioning my decision so far. Thumbs up
Dear Andrew, Good review but pls do us a favour . can you reach out to Technics and ask why the products are not available in the whole of South East Asia or even in Hong Kong, especially when it is made in Malaysia.
I would love to see a video about complete systems with the best integrated amps reviewed on this channel. Like the best synergy between these components and speakers. I know its always discussed during the reviews, but it will be nice to see a video solely on this.
This would be my perfect 2-ch integrated if it weren’t for the lack of a dedicated sub out. Yes, I understand I can just use the pre-outs. I just don’t want to. YMMV
Thank you for the great review(s). You had two highly positive reviews on the Sonus faber Lumina II and the Pro-ject Speaker Box 5S2. For use in a den or even a living room/dining room would the SU-GX70 drive those models well? Curious as to the volume push you need (over 50 or 60) or would detail sound good at moderate and low volume. I currently use a Sonos amp on Sf Olympica Nova Wall speakers for the living room and the sound is fabulous - although component connectivity is limited
Interesting. Im more of a separates guy but i can appreciate any all in one device that does it right. I see some complaints on the price but if you consider everything you get, its not a bad price. Streamer, Dac, Amp, Room Correction, and the most wanted input...HDMI Arc. Nice small profile too.
Can we assume the Yamaha RN2000A is worth the extra for someone that values ultimate sound quality, and that this new Technics is more RN1000A territory?
The 2000A is above the Technics and Yamaha 1000A for die hard enthusiasts who want a more traditional hifi experience or who have more finicky speakers.
Hi Andrew, I'm just curious what your thoughts (well more what Kristy thinks as i too struggle to hear voices in movies) are on pairing the Technics x70 with the sonus faber lumina amator (with a sub). Would this make a good alround package?
I run a pair of Sonus Faber Olympica Nova Wall speakers as my main stereo speakers on either side of a 55” Samsung, powered by just a Sonos amp and for now, a Sonos Subwoofer Gen3. This set up replaced a Sonos Arc and the Sub. I find that the clarity of the Sonus Fabers for movies and tv is superior to the Sonos Arc. The 5.1 simulation is gone, but overall action and music sounds superb on the Sonus Fabers. I think the Lumina II Amators use the same tweeter as the Novas and the woofer is also the same 6” as my a nova Walls. The Lumina II Amator now has the same crossover as the Novas, so you are looking at one gorgeous speaker that needs less space. For music, the Sonus Fabers are another league and this is with a Sonos amp which I have been duly criticized by many for using. Now, add the Technics which I’m using in my den to drive Dali Menuet SEs which are 86db sensitivity into 4ohms and sound like Nirvana in a smaller den space. The Lumina II Amator has a 6” woofer compared to 4-1/2 which ai’m running without a subwoofer. I love the space tune correction and the LAPC which gives the speakers an amazing boost. For tv and movies, I like Dali Menuets more than the Sonos Arc (which I tried in the den after getting my living room. Set up. Even streaming Siriusnxm through Chromcast sounded great and Sirius is far from hi res. I also streamed WKCR fm (Columbia University) radio which has its decades long Saturday Night traditions on Swing with Phil Schaap and Saturday Night at the Opera streaming through Tune-In. The opera sounded so clear and beautiful, even without a subwoofer bringing out the depth and clarity that the Arc couldn’t approach. I had my eye on the Lumina II Amator, but it didn’t fit the depth of my 9 inch shelves, so Insplurged for the Dali Menuet SE which fits like a jewel. I am vouching for the amp which I’m still experimenting with and will have it set up with professional wiring. I’m currently running Crutchfield 14 gauge inexpensive wiring to try out placements and you might want to try a pair of 10’ foot 14 gauge like that for about $40 so you can try different setups with ease, then decide on your “spot” and put in higher end cable to match the speakers if you feel the need. As Andrew said, the Technics amp is dead quiet and emits no noise. Everything sounds so much better that way now. Good luck with your search - Make a good decision!
Another excellent review. What amp would you prefer, when it comes to pairing an amplifier for the B&W 606 S3, this amp or the Yamaha you reviewed last week?
Hmm, good question. Both actually work really well with that speaker so it's going to come down to your personal choice and how you feel about the experience with either product with the App. I think I would side with the Technics, but that's just me.
I would be curious about what other 2 channel integrateds with room correction are available. I ran across the Burchardt L150 the other daytime, which also uses an iPhone (only) as a calibrated mic for room correction. Perhaps there is a connection between these products?
The Yamaha RX-A8A is doing me justice with my headphones but I’m hoping for the development of more amplifiers with DACs which can decode surround sound codes both through speakers and the headphone output. Actually, what I want is a headphone amplifier that can pass HDMI video to the television and pump out lossless audio codecs through the headphones. If you don’t think it’s possible then you didn’t own the Denon X7200WA. They figured it out in 2015. And yea, with a Sennheiser HD800S it really was amazing pass-through of surround sound into a left and right channel. Oh and my dream headphone amp, sure, a couple of posts for your speakers too. I’m generous that way.
Great Review! I have a pair of 87dB KEF R3s - would the GX-70 still extract that full sound, especially at low listening volumes? Or is the bigger brother, the 700 (or perhaps something M5SI with even higher published figures) more appropriate for lower sensitivity speaker? I am not after SPL but just a full sound with defined bass at low volume. It's hard to guess current and control from the published figures alone :)
Thank you Andrew and Kristy, great review. I’m planning to get one, I have a small apartment and don’t need much wattage…. Do you think a pair of Focal Athiva n1 will be a good pairing? Of not, which other speakers do you recommend. I will probably add a sub later…. I will appreciate your advice. Thank you again for your through review!
Warning: this reply is long, but intended to provide some detailed user information which is not generally commented in other written reviews. I bought Dali Menuet SEs for wall bookshelves in a den. I had my eye on the Sonus faber lumina II speakers, but my shelves aren’t deep enough and there isn’t practical room to put these on stands in front of the shelves. Therefore, I needed speakers with a maximum 9” depth which narrowed it down to the Dalis or the Pro-Ject speaker box s2 which is not in stock very often. I sit (lie down) 9’-10’ across on a sofa against the opposite wall, I.e. a nice natural enclosure. I bought SVS ultra-soundpath cables and run them to the corner where the amp is set up right next to the corner of the bookshelves. The speakers are one shelf ABOVE ear height and about 9-10’ apart in either side of a 58” cutout for a 55” tv. This broke “the rules about ear height speaker placement, but I tried a lot of positions lower and closer together before settling on this position for installation of the cables. I have not added a subwoofer (yet). Hookups: NAD 538;cd player and Audio-Technica 120-USB older/starter turntable. Results: I love this sound! Streaming directly at hi resolution through Amazon HD and Apple Music, and Sirius XM through Airplay 2. Also streaming Tune-in radio directly. The sound is stunning at low and medium volume. Bass is balanced but not rock-heavy. A subwoofer would be a boost, but I am enjoying all sounds at a moderate level for now. Best late night listening I’ve ever had! TV sound is outstanding even though the speakers are at the top of tv and about 4-1/2’ from the center of the screen. Performance: musically, it is a beautiful sound and it is driving a difficult to drive 4ohm speaker with 86db sensitivity. My CDs sound much better and fuller now, with all details present, especially in the midrange. The treble is not harsh and never fatiguing. Volume levels are almost always over 50% which displays as a negative number (e.g. -40 is at 60% of volume). CDs play with more gain at a lower set volume that is equivalent to -40 when streaming (say -48 to - 45). Tune in needs a bigger boost and sometimes needs to play at -35 to get a satisfying sound. I never need to go higher than -30 (70% of maximum volume). These power needs are a complaint for many, but so long as it is not damaging the speaker, I am now used to it and not concerned. Music that sounds just stunning: On CD: Old recordings decently remastered (Duke Ellington-Reminiscing in Tempo soundtrack to the PBS special in the 1990s, out of print which is why the CD player is a welcome add on); John Coltrane - Blue Trane and My favorite Things; Grateful Dead: Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty; Andre Previn, Gershwin Concerto in F on Philip’s with Pittsburgh Symphony (the crescendo at the end of the Adagio holds up on these little speakers)- this is a great 12 minute test for the system because it hits every soft and loud note and everything in between at slow tempo so that you can hear every permutation of sound from the entire orchestra (cymbal crashes included!). Streaming: As the drummer in “That Thing You Do” said, anything by Stan Getz on the Verve label; Sirius XM (Tom Petty’s buried treasure shows have great clarity and delivered volume, the Grateful Dead channel - their soundboard concert broadcasts sound great at moderate volume), everything by Wilco and Jeff Tweedy. Acoustic voices sound fantastic (female vocalists: Sarah Jarosz ( all of her albums), Ella Fitzgerald (Ella sings the Cole Porter songbook and Ella and Louis (Armstrong). Apple Music through airplay 2 for my extensive playlists which don’t transfer to the Techniques App and for some higher res searching although it only plays at 48hz max through airplay. In comparison, Amazon does play hi res FLAC/96khz/192khz files directly. some songs seem to have more depth that way but it could be a placebo effect. The software App: in short, it works and I am getting used to it, but there is a war going on between me and the app and the app is winning! For some, that would be reason to return the unit and switch to another brand. For me, I love the sound so much with the bookshelves installed as mentioned, that I will keep this unit and Highly recommend it. Some advance items about the app in case it matters to you: 1. The Search function - is like the difference between high end gear being an adult toy and Fisher-Price. To search, you have to go to the main screen and pick your streaming source first; you cannot search an artist or title from any other page, and have it compile activated streaming sources like you can in Sonos (which I’ve used for two years and have enjoyable habits in using). Once you select your source, you type in the name of the artist, song, album etc, and hit enter/go, and it sits there. You have to go to a second line that also says “search” and press it again. Then a list comes up for you to browse and select your song. Then, while listening, if you want to search another artist while listening, you have to go all the way out to the beginning using a back-arrow key, and type the new search. If you start playing it and then want to return to the first album, you have to type it in all over again. There is no “recent searches list” or anything like it even when searching *in the same streaming source. If you want to search in another streaming source while playing the first search, going to the other source cuts off what is playing. So, you cannot search another source manually while playing music in the other source. And, returning back from the second source to your original recording requires entering the two-step search all over again from scratch. Compare this to Sonos and likely many other apps. As I said, this may be a dealbreaker for many, but I love the sound so much as used in a 10 x 15’ den that I will endure this corporate audacity from Technics. Anyone who bought the Technics $10,000 RU-1000 or the $3,499 CD/SACD streamer has a much bigger complaint than me. Did I get what I paid for with this app? Well, I paid much less for a Sonos Arc and have software that is just great to use and does all of the mentioned things that the Technics does not. 2. Switching between components - when switching between, say, the tv (connected through a long optical cord) and the cd player, it works very well. Recovering the tv signal can take up to 5 seconds, but I don’t mind this so much. 3. Saving favorites - the App allows saving favorites for direct streaming sources the amp recognizes (Amazon, tidal qobuz, but not Apple or Sirius xm)Therefore, I can save shortcut favorites for Amazon and TuneIn radio stations, but not for songs, albums or playlists in Apple Music. I can’t save any Sirius XM stations as a favorite direct access within the Technics app the way I can in Sonos, because I have to stream Sirius XM through Airplay or Chromecast (I use airplay 2). But, the Sirius XM app is quite good and has its own quick show of favorite and most used channels that can be streaming in good short order. Still, You have to do it that way with extra steps, etc. 4. Saving to playlists. The instructions may as well be in Japanese (or Greek since many a Japanese customer may hate this too). You cannot save an entire album to a new playlist. You can only save to a playlist song by song. At least, following the instructions, that’s what happens. [This comment is also a user S.O.S.request for advice on how to use shortcuts and make/edit playlists efficiently unless I am right about the limitations I described]. Well, I think I’ve overstayed my welcome on this reply, but I learned a lot from others (especially Andrew’s video review) about detailed comments before I bought the Su GX70. I can attest that his enthusiasm for the product and its sound quality is completely vindicated by the truth of what he said. The unit produces gorgeous sound across all music styles and regardless of the app limitations, I am a happy owner of this amp and will use it for a long time to come. I’ve stopped looking for other amps that might do this or that. There is something to be said for being done and enjoying what you have. This purchase was an informed choice and I knew of the low points others remarked on. But, the black model can be purchased for $1,500 new right now, which is what I did 11 weeks ago from Crutchfield, and I would have been extremely happy had I paid $2,000. Make a good decision! Enjoy, and pray for a software app improvement (which is a low bar)!
@@HAL-vu8efyou may want to look at the Sonus faber lumina II Amator speakers which are $1,500 and $1,000 leas than the Dali Menuet SE. they have a higher end crossover than the regular lumina II and a larger woofer at 6” compared to 4-1/2. They are not as small but if you have the shelf space at 11” deep the sensitivity is increased to 89db which makes them easier to drive on the Technics amp. Both speakers are elegant looking. The Dalis fit my particular space need perfectly and the sound is superb for the 10 x 15 den. Good luck again.
Hi Andrew, when you refer to the Technics as being "transparent" and NAD amplifiers as "neutral". How would you characterise the difference in the terms?
NAD amps are more or less neutral, however they still have qualities to their sound that make them identifiable as an NAD (or digital hybrid amp) whereas the Technics sounds more like my Decware Zen in that I can't hear its presence, really, in the signal chain. It doesn't have a great deal of character, which for me is why I say it's transparent.
@robinsonbrand thanks for answering this question from @rosscooper1950. Because a lot of hifi (or wine) reviews use vivid evocative vocabulary... that's also opaque or mutable. It's refreshing to hear you explain these two words commonsensically and matter-of-fact-ly.
It really is going to depend on your speakers at that point. If you have say Magnepans, even listening below 80dB you'll likely want an amp like the 40N. But if you're listening to say a speaker with a sensitivity of 89 to 90dB and you want to listen at those volumes, the GX70 is more than enough and gives you more for your money OVER the 40N.
So I understand you love the SU-GX70. Do you prefer it over the Yamaha R-N1000a that you recently reviewed? It would be replacing a Bluesound Power Node driving Focal in-walls. Appreciate your opinion.
I have a question maybe someone in here can answer. How important is the quality of the DAC/ streamer if you are connecting it via WiFi and not Ethernet? I'm looking at the DMP Solo, but will I even notice a difference if I go above that level since I'm using WIFI?
Hey Andrew and Kristi! Just a small detail and it’s regarding a name. You’re in the industry now and I’m not, but I was many years ago when Panasonic kicked off the Technics brand name. You pronounce it phonetically “Tech-nicks”, which may now be the case. But back in the day when I sold the brand over 40 years ago we were told by the Panasonic/Technics National Sales Manager it was pronounced “Tech-neeks”. No biggie, but I thought I’d bring it up as a convo topic. Please chime in as I’d like to hear from you on this, as a industry veteran I’d like to know just out of curiosity if you heard different. Perhaps it’s part of Panasonic’s newer marketing strategy, that they changed the pronunciation. Thanks guys. Keep up the great work!
Interesting that you should bring this up. I"ve been pronouncing it "Tech-nicks" for all my life, but I recently watched some footage from an audio show and was very surprised to hear the sales rep indeed pronouncing it "Tech-neeks". Made a mental nite of it and resolved to mend my ways.
I never get bent out of shape about it, but I can confirm from my youth spent hawking electronics and manning the “wheels of steel.” It is, in fact, “tech-neeks.”
Some manufacturers do not recommending use the pre outs in this way. So I still like to see a dedicated sub out. But thanks for the heads up about the dual use for the pre out.
I would go with the Yamaha simply because it's not full of surface mount components. The technics might be good, but good luck finding a repair technician that both can repair class D circuits, AND can do hot air microscope work. For $2000usd, 4-5000nzd to me, i would expect this to last 10 years. (I have traditional amps that are 40 years old) With the way it's made, it does not fill me with confidence.
Another great review. How do you compare it to the Anthem STR for the MA Platinum 200 3G? The Anthem STR would be a great review for the channel :D best regards and keep up the amazing work
Feature-wise the Technics blows the Anthem out of the water. But the Platinums like and need power and current so for those speakers I would likely steer folks toward the Anthem --especially if you want to listen loudly or have a bit more dynamic headroom. But you could also check out the Technics SU-G700MKII unless of course you want room correction and streaming, then the 700 would be out.
Very tempting...thank you for this great review! Now the question is that their next amp will probably be the best thing ever so maybe it could be good to wait a little more ha... But yeah i could be happy with it I'm sure or in a perfect world, get that for the bedroom and the Yamaha as-2200 for the living room as i keep hearing it's still far above their current products... Have a great week!
Hi Andrew and Christi. I I always watch and love ur videos. I have a conundrum. I have a Denon 1600. I started off using CSS criton 1td speakers. The amp and speakers are warm. It was a no-go right from the start. It had no HI-Fi at all. It really sucked. I had never thought of using some other beginner speakers. The Polk Tsi 200’s. It was night and day difference. I had some HI-Fi. I know I need Bright speakers to hear the right sound. Would the Revel M16 be the right speaker for my system to be synergistic? I was even thinking of the RPM 600m. I need ur advice badly. Thank You.
Wouldn’t mind Space Tune. That’s a feature type missing from my Roksan Attessa. Enjoyed the review without a doubt. Impressed that those 30 watts punch above their weight. Thanks to both of you.

I think a lot of people have a soft spot for the brand that goes WAY back. I know I do. Thanks for watching!
That new intro looks great. I love how Kristi's initials get worked in as well.
Agree!
Absolutely 😊
There is an android app... It might just miss a couple of features that the iOS app has.
Android app has Space Tune, but might a have a couple fewer options.
@@anthonystephenson7659 Thanks for the correction. I was under the impression through some forums and videos that Audio Center isn't available for Android. I see now that it is available but that they're talking about the missing app features used to have full benefit of the SU-GX70. Although, if I bought this receiver as an Android user then I'd still be in the same place...disappointed and mad that Panasonic/Technics hasn't made available all the features for my phone as they did for Apple users.
@@BryanRuby
Yep, most reviews don't really make it clear that there is an android version available.
That's awesome! So glad to hear that you are enjoying your new Technics amp! Appreciate you letting us know and thank you for your support!
It's great and I too thought the 30 Watts seemed a bit "light" but in the real world and during everyday listening, it was never an issue.
Thanks for the great review. Just the amp I'm looking for our living room setup. Amazing how a simple HDMI port gives it more flexibility.
Another happy Sunday morning to the two of you. Glad it's another stereo focused review this week.
Thanks for tuning in! We did a stereo-focused review last week too.
Yes. Love the two-channel stuff. Keep them coming LOL!@@andrewrobinsonreviews
“May be the most important product they’ve ever made”. That’s saying something for the company that made the SL-1200.
Technics is beautiful for me since I was a young guy dreaming of its shelf systems in the 80's. Technics for me....pure love 😊
Do you have any thoughts on which of these amps might possibly pair best with these speakers?
... this is kinda interesting to compare the Yamaha latest :) Cant wait to see the comp review. Cheers
Hi guys, you didn’t compare it to the marantz model 40n. Any reasons as this you rated very highly.
I checked:
a) B&W 603 S3
b) Monitor Audio Silver 300 7G
c) Dali Opticon 6 MK2
Which one would you recommend?
Love seeing Technics going for the gold with an all in one and if I had to do it again this might give me pause… but the meters!!! 😭
The SU-G700 is great! I still love it and I hope the 700 MKIII adds HDMI and Space Tune. Glad to hear you've found a solution that works for you!
@@andrewrobinsonreviewsyeah I would trade up in a heartbeat if that was the case! Who knew Panasonic could bring back my fav childhood brand in such an amazing way.
Finally HDMI!! Maybe this will be standard on any new integrated amplifiers.
Great review.
Great review as always! I'm actually really surprised by this review with the Technics, didn't think that this " low power" amp could handle those speakers so well. How would you think about pairing with Focal speakers? I love detailed sound and lively.
Thanks for the review Andrew and Kristi. How does this Amp compare to Marantz Model 30 and/or 40n. Thanks :)
Flying semi-private: Anything that simplifies the flying experience is a win in my book. While the plane was a little dated and not what I was expecting (or what was pictured), it still beat the heck out of going through security and having to arrive 2 hours early.

I wish these manufacturers would add a third channel for the center speaker. Big fan of Technics. Thanks for the review.
This is right up my street so thank you Andrew!
I know you referenced the N1000, but how does this compare to the Yamaha RN2000A please? 🤔
If only it had more power, I’d buy it. How does this compare to the Rotel 1592mk2?
Good morning! How does it compare to the Marantz Model 40N?
I’m actually very tempted by the 300’s too, just on looks alone. Especially with the Q stands they make for them. What a looker!!! ✌️
Great show, thank you. Looks really good that SU-GX70 Technics. However, how come the Technics only gives a 3-year warranty when Yamaha R-N1000A gives 5?
Excited for the upcoming Marantz Stereo 70s review you alluded to in this vid :)
It looks sharp. It's main problem is that when you get to that $2k price tag there is a lot quality out there. I'll probably go for the "less versatile" Buchardt i150 for that money. Too many features historically translate to less in the future.
I agree about names. One of the reasons I noticed Paradigm speakers back in the 90s was the fact that they had names (Atom, Titan, etc.)
RIGHT! Please manufacturers, give your products names, not numbers!
I agree with you about the names vs. numbers; names are so much more memorable, letters or numbers can be added to distinguish between iterations or feature sets; but names are so much better. Think ‘signature’ editions.
Very nice Mr Robinson, sir.
Looks good. Decent price too. Decent power.
Does the HDMI allow for 4K?
My only gripe is the tiny screen😢
The HDMI is for audio to pass through to the Technics from your TV.
@robinsonbrand good enough, thank you kindly, my friend 🙏
Edit: I also have a weakness for Technics ⚙️ lol
I'm in.
Hamster wheel 😂! Lots of fun for a Sunday morning. Thanks guys, another great review that’s gonna cost me some money
How well would the SU-GX70 be able to drive the Polk R700s?
Googling the hell out of my smartphone just to find out... @robinsonbrand help us here please
Would have to sell my Rotel stereo amp with 200w, lol. But this Technics seems so easy to use and i could imagine my sound improve a bit

Greaaaat review as ever, thanks! Almost convinced to buy one actually, but how does it compare to the Bluesound Powernode 330??
I prefer it to the PowerNode products, but it does cost more and has less power so everyone's situation and needs are going to differ.
Sounds like a great amp sound and feature wise.Makes me continue to consider going back to 2 channel from surround.
If they put in two VU meters, it would triple sales.
You're not wrong.
Now if they add Space Tune and HDMI to G700M2 and increase the price to $3000-35000 this would be the best integrated under 10K.
Always here to support as always
And we genuinely appreciate it! Thanks!
I love the subtle KCRW shoutout on the scrolling screen shot! The Eclectic 24 is always worth a listen. Nice.
The BEST!
This would be my perfect 2-ch integrated if it weren’t for the lack of a dedicated sub out. Yes, I understand I can just use the pre-outs. I just don’t want to. YMMV
You never compare all these solid state amps to some tube amps you have tested in the past, like the Decware Zen for example ! Why ?
Thank you for the great review(s). You had two highly positive reviews on the Sonus faber Lumina II and the Pro-ject Speaker Box 5S2. For use in a den or even a living room/dining room would the SU-GX70 drive those models well? Curious as to the volume push you need (over 50 or 60) or would detail sound good at moderate and low volume. I currently use a Sonos amp on Sf Olympica Nova Wall speakers for the living room and the sound is fabulous - although component connectivity is limited
This amp would drive either of those speakers to the volumes you're thinking and sound brilliant!
Were the Martin Logan XT F100 one of the others used in your testing? I've been considering this combo (or the SU-G700m2). Thoughts?
Great episode. Keep the conversation going.
It's definitely priced right for everything it does. Do you think it would make a good preamp if I already have a good AB power amp.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks
The world’s been waiting a long time for an audiophile-caliber amp with HDMI input and support for room correction. At long last it’s here!
Finally, right! To be fair, the GX70 isn't the only hifi solution with room correction, but it may rank among the more elegant available right now.
I would be curious about what other 2 channel integrateds with room correction are available. I ran across the Burchardt L150 the other daytime, which also uses an iPhone (only) as a calibrated mic for room correction. Perhaps there is a connection between these products?
The second I lived with the Technics for more than a day
This or the Marantz 40N ? I looked through the comments and didn’t see an answer. Thanks :)
You can hear 15k highs. Well done. I'm 64. Everything after 12k is done for me
I can, yes.
I would like to see a smart guy who decided that the subwoofer output is not necessary on a product like this.
I am wondering what speakers to pair with the Technics too. Let me know how you go!
Music that sounds just stunning:
On CD: Old recordings decently remastered (Duke Ellington-Reminiscing in Tempo soundtrack to the PBS special in the 1990s, out of print which is why the CD player is a welcome add on); John Coltrane - Blue Trane and My favorite Things; Grateful Dead: Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty; Andre Previn, Gershwin Concerto in F on Philip’s with Pittsburgh Symphony (the crescendo at the end of the Adagio holds up on these little speakers)- this is a great 12 minute test for the system because it hits every soft and loud note and everything in between at slow tempo so that you can hear every permutation of sound from the entire orchestra (cymbal crashes included!).
Some advance items about the app in case it matters to you:
Thanks for such an in depth reply, much appreciated. I am definitely buying one.
Ignoring the power & possible price differences, would you consider this or Marantz model 40n for listening around ~75-80 dB?
It really is going to depend on your speakers at that point. If you have say Magnepans, even listening below 80dB you'll likely want an amp like the 40N. But if you're listening to say a speaker with a sensitivity of 89 to 90dB and you want to listen at those volumes, the GX70 is more than enough and gives you more for your money OVER the 40N.
So I understand you love the SU-GX70. Do you prefer it over the Yamaha R-N1000a that you recently reviewed? It would be replacing a Bluesound Power Node driving Focal in-walls. Appreciate your opinion.
A comparison between the two is made in the review.
I prefer the the Yamaha r-n1000a
I’ve got one arriving tommorow so will give you my thoughts
What are your thoughts?
@@kalimistukhe’s still thinking
I’ve always heard “Tech-Neeks” from way back in the day when I used to DJ with SL-1200 turntables. 😁
@@rickbrookes9491 Nice! Thanks for your reply. I still have my SL-1200 turntable from back in the 70’s. Well built.
@@phonomat1587 Cool! Thanks for sharing and for your reply!
I never get bent out of shape about it, but I can confirm from my youth spent hawking electronics and manning the “wheels of steel.” It is, in fact, “tech-neeks.”
Awesome product most couldn't go wrong buying this thx u2 )) ...
For 2k, I would have really liked a sub out for my bass head needs. That's the only thing i can complain about.
There is sub out, it's called pre out. Don't mention that some brands like Rel don't even need pre outs.
The pre-outs can be used to send a signal to a powered sub or two if you’d like.
Some manufacturers do not recommending use the pre outs in this way. So I still like to see a dedicated sub out. But thanks for the heads up about the dual use for the pre out.
@@VeerMaharaj just curious, why is that? It’s just sending a signal.
Hey there! Happy Sunday
Happy Sunday to you too!
Oh and Arcam Radia series to watch out now..... Hmmmm...
The one glaring omission: No subwoofer out 😞
It has precuts. That’s what I’m using right now on my Exposure 3010S2D. Even though I use two REL subs that can use the speaker outputs. Works great.
Purists would not use a dedicated sub-out anyway. Pre-out for perfect timing.
@@JustBrowsing777Exactly. I want my subs to run in stereo, and be an extension of my main speakers. ✌️
Technics or Peachtree gan1/ bluesound node for similar money?
Thank You.
The Revel M16 are not what I would call "bright". The 600M MKII from Klipsch would maybe be better with the Denon, or the new B&Ws here bit.ly/3qS46Ru
I'd recommend Focal speakers!
This is a great, detailed review. Did you test this amp with the Heresy IVs?
Wouldn’t mind Space Tune. That’s a feature type missing from my Roksan Attessa. Enjoyed the review without a doubt. Impressed that those 30 watts punch above their weight. Thanks to both of you.
Space Tune is really neat and effective! The Roksan Attessa is still a GREAT amp!
