    Well the package has arrived, a 60mg/h digital timer ozone generator. It jas different guts then in this vid (stacked white plates).
    The first thing I checked: Earth connection. Well that's not present at all. Should I connect the earth to the metal case? Most video's tell you to do so, but I also heard that some devices are designed without earth on purpose.

    Nice video. Too bad you have so few comments. I think you did a good job. I've been wanting my own ozone generator for a long time for several reasons. I'd like to bubble ozone through water to purify it, and I'd like to see how well it works at keeping bugs out of places.
    On ebay you can find some pretty cheap ozone generators that are just a transformer and ceramic plates. There's a company that apparently does this with a number of these generators, and mounts the plates inside fans to generate large amounts of ozone. They are about $25 and up a set for a 7 oz per hour (so they claim) ozone production.
    If you happen to know a better source of just the transformers, let me know. I suppose a person could just use glass, and put metal on both sides.
    I even looked into winding my own transformers, but I know so little about them, and what is the best combination of voltage output, watts, frequency, etc, I figured I just start by buying some cheapie china transformers.
    Any suggestions as to what would produce the best corona, resulting in the most ozone? For the transformers, what is the best voltage output, power, etc, and for the plates, what is the best to use? screen? wire? is thinner better? are some materials better than others? Is a larger or smaller gap between the metals better? Are some insulators better than others, or is it just a matter of using something that does not easily burn through?
    Thanks again for the good video.
    I tried making ozone using a micowave oven. I disconnected the power in wires from the microwave generator and used a mayonnaise jar with copper wire wrapped around it, and a big wad of copper wire stuffed inside it, but nothing happened that I could see. Maybe I had too much metal, or the microwave didn't generate enough voltage.

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  10 лет назад +9

      The high voltage transformers are notoriously difficult to make yourself so it's better to buy them. The ceramic ozone plates are a very optimised design and very cheap on ebay now, so it's actually cheaper overall to buy your bits on ebay. The generation of the corona relies on the alternating of the high voltage polarity, and the more often that happens the more corona is produced, which is why the high output units use high frequency supplies.
      Be ultra careful with microwave oven circuitry. It can end your life with a single pop like an insect killer. The voltage output is too low for easy ozone generation and would have to be taken directly from the transformer without the rest of the rectifying and smoothing circuitry. But seriously, just don't use the microwave transformer. The electronic ozone generator supplies tend to be current limited so they are less dangerous, but can still cause a fire if the outputs arc.

      Thank you for your helpful comments. I think I will probably follow your advise on the ozone generator and the microwave.
      How about your comments on another subject: a colloidal silver/other-metals generator. Do you have any knowledge on that subject? I bought a book written by Robert Langlois on wire EDMs, that I thought I could adapt to generate metal colloids, but the parts list is old, and doesn't match parts I could find.

      Even O3 is pretty much toxic in high enough concentrations. When you have a lot of static go off somewhere, and you get that weird electricity smell? That's a very small concentration of ozone, and the reason you detect it so easily is because the human sense of smell has gotten very good at detecting things that are not very good for you.

    I have a laser driver that's around 17,500 volts I mention this would work pretty good for such a device. The thing is I have an ozone generator that something went wrong with it's just it cheap A2Z ozone generator but I need it for my lab work it's scrubs bacteria out of a chamber that I use. I also have a medical grade ozone generator that I do not want to sacrifice for this purpose. I don't even want to open it up to inspect it it's very important to me. I wonder if I took the 17000 driver some nichrome wire and some stainless wire and used a test tube to recreate the tube if this would work. Does it need to be under vacuum do you know? I may be able to figure that out as well. I'm a machine this so I can make a custom one-way valve too attached to the open end that allows for vacuuming the tube out. Of course if this is not necessary I will not bother with that aspect.
    I really need to rebuild that ozone generator seems to be such a waste to toss it out if I can repair it I just hate that! If you have any thoughts that may help me through this problem I would be very grateful for your input

      +danz409 I ran across an old ozone generator at an antique store once. Evidently they were sold in the 40s & 50s as a snake-oil miracle cure for pretty much anything that ails you. It was a big gas-discharge tube, like a neon sign tube, folded back on itself a bunch of times. And yeah, it pumped out the ozone! Also, you got a nice, memorable zap from it if you got your hands anywhere near the tube while it was on. Hard to believe something like that could ever be considered 'safe' in any capacity.

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  8 лет назад +3

      +Shmeh Fleh One type of ozone generator used two tubes zig-zagging against each other. They were each connected to a transformer terminal and the corona discharge occurred between the tubes.

    ozone doesn't just oxidize smells in the air... it oxidizes everything in the air. it's like vaporizing weak bleach and then breathing it. and yes, it bleaches your lungs too. this is why it's considered one of the most important air contaminants, and places like deserts, where ozone gets produced commonly at ground level just from heating rocks in the sun, often have ozone concentrations listed in the local papers.
    same ozone you hear about forming the ozone layer... but the difference is that the ozone layer is up in the stratosphere, and serves an important function in absorbing UV light (UV will break the O3 back into O2 and single O atoms). ozone that is formed at low levels in the atmosphere is just a pollutant.
    what things like this should really do is keep the ozone localized inside the box by using filters or UV before the air exits. but AFAIK, none of them do.

    isn't ozone toxic ??

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 8 лет назад +2

      +Bogdan M It is just slightly. You will perceive headache before any significant damage is done, and it has an obvious smell, so it's not too dangerous. It's certainly prudent not to be inside when you have ozone generator running, and it's also prudent to air out or wait for a while before you stay in the room for more than a few seconds. After a few hours, the ozone will certainly find some organic matter to oxidise or will recombine back into regular oxygen.
      Whether one really needs one... meh, i don't know. I suppose it will kill off some furniture resident bacteria and cause particulate matter in the air to set on the walls, where it can be wiped off easily.
      As a precaution, when my sick dog died and before we got a new one, we blasted all the rooms with powerful quartz UV lamps on a timer which also generated lots of ozone. Probably a good thing. Obviously we stayed out during the procedure.

    • @thomasneal9291
      @thomasneal9291 6 лет назад

      "It is just slightly."
      no, it is a very strong oxidizer. it's about the same level as sodium hypochlorite (bleach).
      it's why it's listed as a major air pollutant in all areas where it gets commonly (and naturally) produced at ground level.
      these cheap ass ozone producers like the one featured here don't really produce enough to do much. maybe if you were in an enclosed small space with it for hours and hours... but professional ones actually don't release ozone INTO the air at all. the ozone is produced in, and stays in, the box you pass the air through.

      The problem with Sanyo's Aqua Washing Machine is that it mixes several new unproven technologies (ex: water reusage, no-detergent, ultra-sonic, ozone ...). It is too risky from the perspective of a standard consumer.
      For instance, consider this much simpler equipment:
      - one simple basket sealed with clothes inside (no water and not so dirty)
      - one ozone generator of high concentration
      In this simple case, do you think it is possible to clean the clothes?

    • @Wibinable

      Problem with ozone is that it degrades all materials, not just dirt and bacteria. Plastics based material become brittle, colour components break down. Thus ozone is possibly best for odour management only.
