Oh. My. God. Finally someone on RUclips who understands the proper use of the time-lapse! Most of the time they either are non-existent where they are needed or so slow with droning narrative as to be more irritating than useful. Your fast time-lapse is refreshing. (If I miss something I can always rewind.) When searching these videos people are looking for resolutions that they can find, verify and then go apply. I personally don't need to hear the whole life story about how someone's 97 year old grandfather came from Eastern Europe where he used to wander around the house naked and .... blah blah blah. Videos need to be informative, clear and sometimes entertaining. They do not have to be long. Having said that, thank you for your attention to detail. So often videos start off with the assumption that the viewer has been watching the 400 other videos the content maker has previously created. That kind of familiarity works as a good characteristic of a pleasant video just as long as ALL of the information is still included in the video. Like the adhesive comments or the broken clip issue. Anyway. Thank you again, from this noob. Gonna go look for a discount tartan fleece! (a new subscriber)
HAHA... I am glad you appreciated that. I am with you. I'd prefer to be given the choice to enjoy the whole video in the creators vision OR just get the facts if I do not have all day to waste
I used to do headliners at an upholstery shop I worked at. Glued a scotch bright pad to a DA to remove all the old crumbling padding material. Worked really well when you get spots that don't like to come off, and it all needs to come off or it shows in the finished product. Another trick, if your headliner panel is cracked and broken like many I've seen, glue patches of canvas on the backside to hold it all together.
"If you did a crappy job, then the fact you picked an outlandish pattern is gonna matter" - Thats the most true statement ever. Bro, I love that look and the video. Keep making vidoes like this. Love it
I followed the video closely when I did the headliner on my 2002 Dakota. It came out perfect! I ended up buying a 90”X90” gray fleece throw blanket at Walmart for $9. Since the blanket matches my seats, my friends think I’m full of shit and had it professionally redone. There were some tears in the fiberglass shell which I repaired with fiberglass cloth and resin. I totally recommend this way of doing it yourself! Was about to buy a new headliner for about $600 with shipping. Between the 2 cans of 3M Super 77 and the cost of the blanket, I’m into my new headliner for $28.
well that's a groovy pattern you chose there. There are lots of videos on headliners but since you and I have about the same beards, I decided to go with your advice. Thanks so much!
Thank you for your video. I followed your procedure and did the same for my van. It looks amazing now. The 3m spray works quick! I used one can on the fleece and one can for the top. So far, it hasn't separated. Thanks a bunch.
I've never seen this done before and I'm 60. Nice job. Came out really good. I wouldn't have chosen that pattern but the work was executed flawlessly. I have a Dodge van 3500, 15 passenger van that I should do this to. It's not bad now but it's old and a little grubby looking.
Great video mine turned out nice! Only thing I would mention is in hot and humid areas it’s a good idea to let the headliner dry/cure inside or a good vented garage away from the sun for up to a day depending on how hot/humid so it won’t melt the adhesive!
Thanks man! I replaced a headliner in an older Chevy truck years ago. Was pretty simple. I'm doing my 88 suburban soon and just watched your vid. Great idea on using fleece! I didn't want to spend the money on headliner material. Now I need to decide on colors/patterns. I'm excited!
Best headliners repair video on RUclips. It's a lot of work. However, it's done right with no cutting corners. Might even be better than factory finish. Thanks for showing us. Two thumbs up.
I did not know the actual headliner came out. lol. I just thought it was one of those really hard jobs to do. But you make it look fairly easy. And by the way, I'm impressed that you got that print on there really straight! That had to be difficult. Thanks for the video!
Super helpful! Thank you so much for posting this. Replaced my headliner today! Joann Fabrics sells headliner normally $15/yd, on sale this week 8.99/yd plus 25% coupon. And Home Depot sells 3M 77 for $10 a can. Wish I could attach after photo, so pleased. $40 diy vs $300 professionally in my area.
@S2 Turbine I think Todd meant that if he had got one from JC, it would have been 350. But he didnt want to spend that much and did it for 90% cheaper.
My 1995 Grand Cherokee needs a new headliner so bad, and I've been watching different videos to help me accomplish this. Your video was the most comprehensive and has the easiest solution that I've found. Sweet Jeep will be looking fantastic in no time at all thanks to you. LOVE, LOVE the notion of colorful fabric and your choice to think "out of the box." Thank you!
I think you make it look a lot easier than it is, mostly what I'm worried about is breaking clips and various trim pieces from the a and b pillars and such
That is certainly a concern and I will admit that the newer the vehicle the more complex those panels are likely to be. I do believe that as long as you are even a little bit inclined toward DIY and you go slow you should be fine
i went to youtube to figure out a cheap way to fix my headlining in my mazda. and found this and i am so happy to another level. and first i was just going to use the stock fabric or order a replacement. but now i’m going to add my own personality to the roof of my car. thank you so much
That is awesome !! I have 2 vehicles with sagging headliners and scored some cool fabric. After seeing this, now I want something loud. Nicely done. Thanks.
I've watched a lot of videos about replacing headliners on RUclips. Yours by far is the best video I've found. I am seriously thinking about doing this for my 96 Lumina. You just gained a subscriber.
Miracle worker! Not doing the headliner but to get my wife to watch a car video, she's like WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING? I said a project that we could both do, for YOUR jeep. THX!
Thanks for making this video, it's awesome to know this can be accomplished without the need to purchase an adhesive air gun and expensive headliner fabric. I love your choice of design, it suits the wagon well. I have a single cab ute(truck) so not as much area to do, I'm heading out this afternoon to look for fabric with skulls on it. Cheers man!
I did my 79 Mustang years ago. I flipped it over and glued fabric to the other side. It worked. My Grand Cherokee I did it similar to this. Thanks for the video.
Very well done. This is exactly how I have done aircraft headliners and trim panels. While one generally uses a flame retardant fabric in aircraft, the glue and the process is identical. I recommend doing it on a large table that you have covered with something soft like a moving blanket, which is covered with a sheet of plastic, all of which is securely taped down. The blanket helps protect the workpiece and keeps if from sliding too much, and the plastic makes cleanup a lot quicker.
Good info to Know!Flynbenny I’m 58 now and will do this with my Grandson on a 1994 Mazda 4x4 in TN. But it’s cold right Now can’t wait to see how it well turn out😁. 2022 March
I just bought a car where the headliner is a wreck. Now i have a method and reference to not just get it fixed but make it fit me a little better. Thanks for the video upload man it is gonna help me a lot. I had no idea where to start with this.
EXCELLENT VIDEO, plus on the "if we want to skip ahead" i didnt but that was very considerate. The headliner looks great! Mine wont be so loud but ill be following your video
Thank you so much! I couldn't get the old headliner to stay up with glue bc of the foam crap. I'm so glad you posted this video! My son and I are going to do this for his car.
I'm Navajo and was watching your "Wiring LED Lights to relay" video and noticed your headliner. I thought "Hey that is cool! Non-native appreciating some Native American art". So I had to find this video to give a thumbs-up. It's 2021 and this video is from 2017.
Thank you for pouting this out there for us to see. I'll be redoing my headliner in my Yukon after the summer. Its just to hot to do it now. (I'm in the palm Springs area so its 110 today) but I will be using that 3M you got there to do mine! Thank you
I was thinking of just getting a boring old headliner. but maybe I'll get something cool now! Your headliner came out nicely. Thank you so much for the work you put in to make this video.
I want to do my GMC pick up but, I can't afford to have somebody do it and this video was just great man! all the way through.. I think I can do this, thank you
This is super helpful! I also didn't know it was a thing for the headliner to come out. I like how creative we can be with the fabric too. I plan on trying this within a couple weeks!🤘🏼 Thanks for the video
Huh. One of the best and most concise diy vids I've watched. You manage to make it look pretty simple and fill one with the confidence to attempt it ones self. Which probably means I'm gonna fuck it up... I'll let ya know how it turns out.
You can lay it out right on the headliner board like you want it to look, then just pull back half from front to middle to glue, then do other half. If you dont have helper or room.
I love how everything turned out great at the end. Thats how it should be done. Great job on the vid. Also, good luck on the next vids you'll be doing. Keep on having fun with 'em.
One of the best shop additions I ever did in my crowded, counterspace challenged shop was to buy 2 sturdy, plastic folding tables. The first thing that happens on any project is a table gets thrown down and the project springs to life. It hurt my very sole to see that new fabric on the ground. Great video that took the mystery out of a headliner. I've never had to do one even in 25 year old trucks. But the revitalization of the roof with a cool pattern like this looks like a worthy project rather than maintenance. Well done son. Oh...a word of advice. If you are from the Great White North, wait until spring to do this. All those clips become snaps on a typical Canadian February day.
I used elmers glue mix 50/50 with water in a spray bottle and fabric from walmart it lasted 12 years in socal i just sold the car and its was still holding besides one little spot its all about the prep work on the headliner its usually the foam that quits not the glue
Thank you very much! I wanted to find a fabric of my own liking to replace the headliner fabric in our 1995 Dodge Grand Caravan, but had no idea how. Now I do! I appreciate you sharing the information about removing the headliner. I was thinking I had to negotiate doing it inside the vehicle. Duh 🙄. It will be quite the process to remove everything holding it, but definitely worth the time. So, thanks again!!
There will definitely be a lot of stuff holding it up, but at the end of the day it is all screws and clips. Time consuming, yes. Difficult, no. Good luck with it!
Doing my headliner right now thanks for the video wasnt sure if it was going to be worth the effort but looks great compared to just trying to mend it.
Your video was informative, thorough, and to the point ...didn't waste time . Some advice in the comments, was additionally helpful . This project is in my future for my 01 Safari van. Thanks
Thanks for this! You answered pretty much every question I would have had throughout and I feel a bit more confident now in attempting my Toyota headliner (especially since I was also planning on doing it in an alternative fabric). This turned out great!
Thanks for showing the steps. My 07 Chevy Silverado Classic extended cab should cost me a little less than 40 buck. I may have to tackle that job. Once the Texas heat cools off dramatically. Great work.
In doing this job I found a few helpful tricks if anyone is interested: 1-in removing the old spongy material from the headliner “board”, an abrasive brush on a drill really cleans the surface. Follow up with a shop vac with an upholstery brush attachment to clean up and then blow everything off with an air compressor. A really clean surface is critical to a smooth finish. 2-do a prep coat of spray adhesive to make the “board” really tacky before the spray steps in this video. Also, prop the board up vertically for spraying. You won’t have to fight the function of the rattle can as much and your back & knees will be grateful. Get a rattle can spray gun trigger attachment ($5-8). It really makes it easier for spraying several large even coats. 3-use tools to press the fabrics down firmly--think plastic scrapers, wallpaper roller tools, 3” paint rollers-look around the shop and be creative. 4-take your time. Ideally the finished product will last several years with no maintenance so spend extra time now and do it right. If possible make it a 2 day process. Day 1 is removal, prep, fabric adhesion. Let it dry for a day, maybe with some weight & clamps so really get the fabric secured. Day 2-re-install the headliner and do a clean job refastening all the trip, visors, etc. I think it would be easy to rush through the re-install stage after all this work and botch the job. A little rest and reset in between might give a better result. 4-fabric choice. If you want to go bold, avoid extremely linear patterns. Straight lines will show misalignment and the pattern will fight against the contours and curves of the board. Random patterns are more forgiving. Think tie dye, stars and planets or ocean scented vs checkerboard or pinstripe. Trust me--I wasted $100 of carbon fiber material learning this one.
This is SO exciting! I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee that I need to do this to and I thought I would be limited to buying boring headliner fabric. Yours looks great and you have really great tips. Thank you!
I like the fabric choice, fleece should also insulate some, temperature and sound-wise. I've always figured that the headliner is someplace to hide something that gives the car some personality. I once did a bold paisley in a car that was white with a tan interior and did zebra stripes in a friend's car (it was one of those, I was fixing it and he was like "I don't care what you do, just make it look good," he was pissed for about 5 minutes when he first saw it and then decided he liked it.) I was under the impression that 77 wasn't strong enough to hold it up long term. I've always used the "high strength' 90, and both are stronger if you spray both sides, let them tack up and then glue together like a contact adhesive. If 77 works I may try that next time because it's somewhat repositionable (next car I want to do has t-tops so the headliner is relatively complicated). what I've had really good luck with is to put the headliner on some sawhorses or bodywork stands, put the cloth over it then fold the cloth halfway over, glue one half, then do the other half. That way you can line it all up before it has glue on it, there is no flipping things over and you won't get the fabric dirty (you never have it sitting on the exposed face).
I love the idea of using fleece blanket - or anything stretchy that wasn’t actually intended for doing headlining but has the look you’re after. Great idea, and helpful re not shortcutting on the glue. I did my Land Rover headliners a couple years ago, and prob didn’t use enough glue, and one panel is coming down and needs redoing. Do it badly, and prepare to do it twice. Thanks!
I was looking for advice on repairing mine and found this video. That fabric is so funky. 😂 I think I’d buy it just because of its uniqueness! Great video.
Spray bed liner or under coat on the metal before your reinstallation it will deaden the sound and help with jeep moisture. I have to do this to my 88xj should be fun. Good vid overall keep them coming
Did something similar on a dark blue 1980 Buick Skyhawk(!) (Buick's version of the Chevy Monza) back in the day (late '80's). Had a few yards of dark blue corduroy kicking around, so... I used contact cement - never again. Still turned out alright though :-)
mine needs to be replaced as well, I left a orange soda in my car one day and when I got In it the next day there was soda all over my headliner. It looks like a spotted cheetah lol. it’s a 2001 Corolla and so it’s pretty old headliner so I tried cleaning it and that made the headliner worse.. lol so thanks for the video, I know it’s a different vehicle but it’s all pretty much the same instructions! 😀
Really nice job. I had a job installing aftermarket headliners in 1980. Rather than scissors, I would use single-edged razor blades. I might use half a dozen per headliner ditching them when they were the least bit dull.
I just watched this..looks great. Live your choice of material!! I had an old school Pontiac station wagon. Took headliner out and used felt instead of fleece. The maroon color matched perfectly to the seats. Didnt have to worry about stretching. Nephew has it now and the liner is still up today.
I think it looks awesome and the video was VERY well done! I need to replace my headliner like yesterday and usually I'll watch a 100 videos before I jump on a project but I'm good with just this one and feel confident that I can do it with no issues. Thanks for taking the time to do this for simpletons like me...
Hey what’s going on bro... That Headliner looks Awesome I just got my 2000 xj I have to do this on mine... looks great love the look... Thanks for sharing...☮️

(Hands down) dude you're so patience and detail oriented, I got mad just by watching at the video even when I fast forward it a couple of times lol I suck 😂🤣
I love your headliner! I have several rear facing kids in my car and I want something bright and cheerful for them to look at rather than the back of a seat or a grey ceiling :D you made this look really easy!
I'm not a professional upholstery guy but I have covered a seat or two I've done a four-wheeler seat a couple times I've done my tractor seat on my tractor I've done a lawn mower seat just stuff like that but I'm kind of glad to watch this video I had an idea this pretty much what it comes down to I got one to do in my truck now so you help clear up my idea of what I've got coming next thanks a lot
I am replacing my headliner as i see this. I cleaned off the headliner board today. I the next couple days i will begin the material portion. Thanks for the advice on the 3M 77 adhesive.
I just had a few droops on the passenger and driver side windows. I just needed to know the proper adhesive to use. I'm a heavy industrial mech. tech/ Boilermaker so the mechanical is usually no problem. But I never ran into a head liner and took some pointers from this vid. Thanks again for posting.
I just bought my first car, 07 Mazda 6 and my headliner is SHOT lol this is soo cool and it sounds relatively easy if you know what you're doing. Dunno if I'm brave enough to actually do this but now I think I might
Just got my first car too, a 06 mazda 6. I'm replacing my headliner with black suede and replacing the sunroof with a floral pattern. I'll record and post it if you want!
Was intimidated to do my headliner, but after watching this i think i got it. Thanks!!
Did you do well on your installation? I'm still sceptical on doing mine. Afraid to break clips and stuff.
@@levihaywood8670 yeah I did well. Use one of those tools to lift up clips and panels. They have them at harbor freight. I just broke like 2 of 10+.

I used elmers glue mix 50/50 with water in a spray bottle and fabric from walmart it lasted 12 years in socal i just sold the car and its was still holding besides one little spot its all about the prep work on the headliner its usually the foam that quits not the glue
Dang.. good tip! Thanks!
Dude, that color is AWESOME.... Great choice...
Looks good man, I did the headliner on my xj and used a gray, black flannel pattern. Turned out real good
just wanna say you helped me to customize my crown vic
The headliner is dope 😂 I love that pattern. I think I’ll just go with a regular color though
Well I know what I'll be doing to the cutlass tomorrow. Great video, the Navajo look is boss.
I had no idea what actually made up a headliner. I love your taste in headliners. I can’t wait to do one!,
Great demo. Helped me get motivated to do mine.
i just re-did my 02 dodge dakota with a star wars head liner and i absolutely love it it turned out fabulous!
Thank you! I just finished doing my F-150. $8 for the fleece, 2 cans of 3M #77 $25. Still got a full can left, so, $20 and done! :-)
Can't beat that!
That is so flipping cool!! I just may do a patterned headliner since I need to replace it. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for showing the steps. My 07 Chevy Silverado Classic extended cab should cost me a little less than 40 buck. I may have to tackle that job. Once the Texas heat cools off dramatically. Great work.
You made this look easy, hella creative, and fun... Thanks Hun🤗🤗🤗
Looks great! I'd never think to pick out that fabric, but then it looked just perfect with that Jeep!!
In doing this job I found a few helpful tricks if anyone is interested:
1-in removing the old spongy material from the headliner “board”, an abrasive brush on a drill really cleans the surface.
Thanks bud! Sounds like you had a heck of a time!
Effing beautiful, I love that you use fleece, it comes in so many variety of patterns n colors. My jeep needs same. Gonna do that !!!
Flawless execution! This will be my weekend project
Thanks! Good luck with it!
This is SO exciting! I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee that I need to do this to and I thought I would be limited to buying boring headliner fabric. Yours looks great and you have really great tips. Thank you!
That looks great! I wish I wasn't so lazy I would fix mine.
You are the bomb! Just replaced headliner on my son’s 1996 Nissan pickup using your video. THANK YOU!!!
I like the fabric choice, fleece should also insulate some, temperature and sound-wise. I've always figured that the headliner is someplace to hide something that gives the car some personality. I once did a bold paisley in a car that was white with a tan interior and did zebra stripes in a friend's car (it was one of those, I was fixing it and he was like "I don't care what you do, just make it look good," he was pissed for about 5 minutes when he first saw it and then decided he liked it.)
I was under the impression that 77 wasn't strong enough to hold it up long term.
Thanks!
Solid vid! Love the indian blanket theme
That is an awesome tip! never would have thought of that! Thanks!
The patterns you chose are SWEET!!! Thinking about doing that to my E-class!! She's an old Lady with a PUNCH!!!
Did something similar on a dark blue 1980 Buick Skyhawk(!) (Buick's version of the Chevy Monza) back in the day (late '80's). Had a few yards of dark blue corduroy kicking around, so... I used contact cement - never again. Still turned out alright though :-)
Best video so far on this. Lots of important details I wish I had known before.... but now I do. Thank you!!
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the vid
mine needs to be replaced as well, I left a orange soda in my car one day and when I got In it the next day there was soda all over my headliner. It looks like a spotted cheetah lol. it’s a 2001 Corolla and so it’s pretty old headliner so I tried cleaning it and that made the headliner worse.. lol so thanks for the video, I know it’s a different vehicle but it’s all pretty much the same instructions! 😀
Dang... what a way to ruin a day. Was the whole car sticky?? Yep, should be a similar process.
D&E In The Garage a little, didn’t Damage anything but the top though.
Really nice job. I had a job installing aftermarket headliners in 1980. Rather than scissors, I would use single-edged razor blades. I might use half a dozen per headliner ditching them when they were the least bit dull.
Just take out the old and paint it like I did on my van.Its much easier and looks great😄
That is a good idea.
What kind of van? I'm in the process of restoring a 1978 chevy g20.
Doesn't adding the fabric/material help decrease the noise?
Came for the headline instructions, subbed for the bold headliner choices. Great channel my man!
Thanks!
I just watched this..looks great. Live your choice of material!! I had an old school Pontiac station wagon. Took headliner out and used felt instead of fleece. The maroon color matched perfectly to the seats. Didnt have to worry about stretching. Nephew has it now and the liner is still up today.
I love the headliner, it is crazy. It reminds me of the cab drivers and their funky ceilings.
didn't realize the frame exists to attach the headliner textile material, overall, you did a good job ~ thanks ~
I love you Mary Morrissey!
Great video! Very helpful! Easily explained! I love that fabric! Very southwesty!
Thanks. My 99 Dodge Ram headliner is falling off. I think I can do this.
Same with my 01. Glad this video popped up on my feed to give me ideas.
Have you fix your headliner yet ??
Mine too!! My dash is brittle as hell!! Already broken into dozens of pieces? Wth were they thinking??
@@ascott6804 Check out LMC for your Dash. www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/DE/full.aspx?page=39 I just realized they have headliners too. www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/DE/full.aspx?page=36
(Hands down) dude you're so patience and detail oriented, I got mad just by watching at the video even when I fast forward it a couple of times lol I suck 😂🤣
Looks like a floor of a indian casino. Good work though .
😂😂😂. It does look like the floor of an Indian casino!! Good work tho 👍🏼
@Dawson Manuel Nobody does care because this video has nothing to do with that?
@@kellendillon4154 Why tf you lyin?
I love your headliner! I have several rear facing kids in my car and I want something bright and cheerful for them to look at rather than the back of a seat or a grey ceiling :D you made this look really easy!
Thanks!
My mini VAN needs this DONE!! Imma do IT you made it sound so EASY!! Imma post when I do it
Please do. Good luck with it!
Christina- I have a Dodge mini van w/falling headliner. Did you do it? Did you post a video? Please leave a link so I can check it out. Thanks.
Good luck with it!
I can pull engines do transmissions but I cannot do a headliner lol 😂 You didn’t amazing job 👍Next project car I get it I’m gonna try it
I am replacing my headliner as i see this. I cleaned off the headliner board today. I the next couple days i will begin the material portion. Thanks for the advice on the 3M 77 adhesive.
thank you for the info. I am now a subscriber.
Awesome! Thanks. Glad to have you
I just had a few droops on the passenger and driver side windows. I just needed to know the proper adhesive to use. I'm a heavy industrial mech. tech/ Boilermaker so the mechanical is usually no problem. But I never ran into a head liner and took some pointers from this vid. Thanks again for posting.
So how long after you posted this did both AZ and NM send you your ID's?
It's not loud, that belongs in a Jeep XJ! Nice choice and job.
This is great. I also gotta say thank you for adding important details in the description!
@@isaaclassi2910 I don't have a sunroof but I'm sure it would be a good upload :) I'm about to go get the fabric and adhesive spray to start mine
@@blackheartxcvii I'm having a hard time finding guides for the sunroof but it cant be much different. Good luck on your project 👍
About to do my first headliner. Super helpful video. Thanks for the attention to detail in explaining everything
Good luck with it!
