Most don't know the difference
Started playing K.D. in '86/early '87 on Country radio in Ohio, all the young D.J.'s in that format loved her. I for one played her music out of rotation and often as a request.
Wow. Arsenio was freaking good as an interviewer here. And KD was so - herself. If only 2021 was as relaxed about shit as those 2 were back then.

She is such a courageous human with such personal integrity. So comfortable in her own skin when referring to herself as both a woman, and alternative. Even young, she had such a finess of class about her. Not militant like today, like the noise makers that KD blazed a trail for. God Bless her.

Kinda of interesting to hear her talk about her image and how she was perceived but she looked every bit the part of a pretty pop star in the Miss Chatelian video. She was all dolled up and looked damn good, it was almost like her saying "i could if I wanted to, but don't need to". Nothing really matters once she starts singing though, just a phenomenal singer.

Dang. Arsenio's approach to the androgenous/gender-bending topic was the most sensitive, personable, humble, and just downright honest that I have ever seen in any interview ever. Major props to the man. (And love, of course, to k d.)
It's interesting that even in 1990, Arsenio danced around the issue a bit.
@@kdrcampbell (Friendly warning: Long-winded comment ahead.😋) I felt he was being sensitive to the interviewee. He was careful not to be confrontational and not to force her into territory she might not be comfortable talking about. As a gay person who came of age the '90s, I can tell you it was far from safe to be out. It was the time of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in the military ( a policy enacted by an otherwise progressive President, Bill Clinton), a situation referred to as "witch hunts," when you could be dishonorably discharged if your homosexuality became known. And many were blackmailed, ensnared by mates pretending to be gay, and outright outed for that very purpose. I knew coaches and teachers who had to be entirely closeted for fear of losing their jobs. I, myself, was fired from a very hippie, alternative little natural foods store because I wore a pro-gay t-shirt to work, having just returned from a most exhilarating March on Washington. Our store had no dress code, no policy regarding homosexuality, and I was given no warning. As for k.d. lang, for all her successes, accolades, and awards, when she came out in the '90s her music was banned from several U.S. radio stations. And she actually faced a picket line outside the '93 Grammies, even though inside she would go on to win the award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She has since said that dealing with the whole coming-out fallout was something she struggled with for years. So, yeah, the '90s weren't all that forgiving to the gays.

KD Lang was such a revolutionary. I was just a kid in 1990 but remember overhearing relatives talking about her with disdain. They loved KD's music, but didn't approve of her appearance and "lifestyle". I remember not understanding their disgust for such an eloquent and beautiful person. It was my first experience with homophobia and the reason why I always stood up with the gay and lesbian communities as a straight woman and always will. There should be no room for hate in the world.

I had the opposite and I'm so grateful to my mum, she played her all the time when I was little but I didn't know what she looked like then I saw a CD case and said 'thats a very pretty man' and she explained it was the women singing the song and that "she dressed like that because she preferred it and that she kissed girls because she preferred it' - and that was that no big deal.

I’m not gay and I’m a Christian…. I really like KD Lang’s voice. She can SING! She’s one of those singers where you like her even without watching a music video. Just her voice alone! I heard her first on the radio and was just captivated by her voice! Love exists for everyone and her love songs are beautiful.

There were other androgynous entertainers in the 80’s and 90’s. It was the beginning of acceptance…it never comes as fast as you want. She’s beyond talented and comes across so humble, beautiful and kind.

I love KD and her voice is just divine..thought a few of the questions were a bit unwarranted..in 2022 they wouldn't be asked but she dealt with them with charm and wit.. whoever is threatened by her are unsafe in themselves their own skin..she should've been a much bigger star because in my humble opinion her divine pure voice is only bettered by Karen Carpenter. All her songs are magic but I think both Crying and Hallelujah covers are better than the originals and even Roy Orbison said so..🇬🇧💞✝️🙏🎶

This interview is so uncomfortable. She is Gay. She is "Butch" in her own words. Back then it wasn't so easily talked about. Arsenio dances around the obvious. Today this interview would be so much more straight forward.

its called the music business and shit management team. and the fact that she is lesbian and back then the music business was not keen on the other side of the fence. it should not matter what or who you are and you get punished for it. She made quite a bit of money for her label and manager and they shun her and many other artists because of that fact. I am a metalhead but i do like some of her tunes.
