  • A very confident, almost smirking, k.d. lang was interviewed on a February 1993 episode of E! EXTREME CLOSEUP. Much of the discussion focused upon the singer having recently come out publicly as a lesbian. You can almost sense the relief and comfort in k.d. during this conversation. #kdlang #interview #comingout

What does the personal leaning of an artist have to do with the public? Why do they "have to come out"? The unhealthy curiosity, this seeking out of private details is distasteful, to put it mildly. Would any artist not necessarily mainstream be a lesser artist? Would Leonardo da Vinci, Oscar Wilde, David Hockney, Freddie Mercury (to arbitrarily name a few) have had less or more impact in their respective field if their inclination had been different?
Enjoy their work, but don't pry into things that don't affect their artistic output.

30 years ago, it sure was not the flag waving celebration declaring one's non-artistic preferences that we endure today.

I'm a bit baffled by some newly emerging genders, but still feel that people may choose how to live. My objection is with fans who feel they are entitled to an insight into private lives. One likes an artist for the paintings / music / writings etc. And their personal preferences don't come into that. Equally, if they do wish to "come out", well, by all means, but no-one ought to feel that their professional future could be affected.
kd lang is a brilliant artist and very likeable person - who she chooses to spend her life with is immaterial
