Barry Manilow was ubiquitous in the 70s. He even wrote a song called "I Write the Songs" that make the whole world sing.

    • @melodymcdonald2140
      @melodymcdonald2140 2 года назад +10

Ironically, Barry did NOT write “I Write The Songs”…. It was Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys. In fact, Barry initially did not want to record the song because he felt people might not understand what the song was really about. Clive Davis eventually convinced him to do it and it became a huge hit.

Barry Manilow is a legend. Definitely a crooner. He ruled the 70's. Try Mandy, Weekend in New England (my fave), I Write the Songs, I Can't Smile Without You, many more. Great piano player and songwriter, and of course, performer.

My mom took me with her to a Barry Manilow concert when I was in early grade school. We had seats near the stage and when he came out to sing Copacabana he said he needed palm trees for the song. There was a group of women up by the stage screaming, "I'm a palm tree, Barry!" over and over. My first concert experience.

Although not one of my favorites (and I was a young adult in the 70s and 80s) Barry Manilow has had a long and illustrious career as a singer/songwriter/music director and producer. His career started growing in the 70s when Bette Midler hired him as musical director for her show in the continental baths in New York. BTW, the Copacabana is a nightclub in New York, and was frequented by many budding musicians/performers (like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Marvin Gaye, Sammy Davis Jr, Harry Belafonte Frank Sinatra, etc.). The Supremes recorded a live album there in 1965. It also attracted many shady characters in the movie and criminal world, and has been used often as a location for gangster films. This song was written by and became a hit for Manilow in 1978.

I've always liked all kinds of music, at five in the hospital I discovered classical, my mother's was country, my father it was swing & jazz, in my teens it was pop, rock and R&B. I first heard Barry's Mandy when I was in the service. Loved it! And have most of his stuff and thousands of other artists. Depending on my mood at the moment is how I select the music. Keep putting out the tunes and the good vibes.

Barry Manilow is the music of my youth. I still remember this song and most of his others by heart. I had a dog named Lola, and I would sing this to her. I would also suggest listening to the studio version. Not as much energy, but more melodic than the live version where he speaks so much. Other songs I would recommend are "Weekend in New England" and "Even Now".

Aside from writing some of North America's most well known ad jingles (like a good neighbor, State Farm is there) there are just so many hit songs:
    Mandy
    Can't Smile Without You
    Weekend in New England
    I Write the Songs
    It's a Miracle
    Looks Like We Made It
I Made it Through the Rain
    Somewhere In the Night
It Could Be Magic.....and the list goes on and on.
Before he became a well know singer/songwriter he was Bette Midler's piano player too. An immensely talented man.

And saw John Denver many times in concert plus on my 18th birthday, he was at the next table with an older couple, he was just starting to get known and joined the restaurant in singing happy birthday. My dad always bought season tickets to the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles every year and only wanted a few for himself and gave me the rest, so pretty much went to concerts most weekends. You can’t go wrong with a Barry Manilow song. He’s recorded about 40 albums, so there’s always something that will fit your mood. His music just makes you feel good!
As good as his recordings are (he’s a composer, arranger, conductor, producer, and musician), his live performances are brilliant. No one puts on a show like Barry does. And he’s still out there doing it… he’s doing a tour in the UK right now, then will be back in his residency at the Westgate in Las Vegas. He will be 79 YEARS OLD on 06/17!!! But you would never know it.

You should react to Peggy Seeger - Emily. Trust me when I say it is both emotionally and thought provoking. Her other songs Gonna Be an Engineer and Talking Matrimony Blues are also great.

I'm also guessing that this might not be the best version to listen to. Very much a crooner, and several better versions where you get a better idea of his vocal capability.

Definitely not his best vocal! He has/had a gorgeous, pure voice. Great entertainer! Saw him live twice and it was so much fun! I don’t care how uncool I was. 🤣

Lots of good suggestions for next songs already have been made, but if you want to hear a very inspirational number I'd suggest "One Voice"... and pay close attention to the meaning of the lyrics.

Do you do live versions for legal reasons? Because if not I really suggest not doing it, I don’t know if you think seeing it live gives a more honest real version, it doesn’t the recorded song that they released is how it was intended to be. This is someone who’s performed this a million times and he’s gotten older so his voice isn’t as good and he’s taking lots of liberties. I highly recommend the original he is kind of a crooner though
