"This is a commercial" was flashed so that viewers wouldn't assume the Tang ads were actually part of CBS News' coverage of the Apollo 15 mission, or a direct endorsement of the product by NASA. When Bob Hope traveled to military installations to broadcast his "PEPSODENT SHOW" on radio during World War II, an NBC staff announcer usually mentioned at the end of those shows that his appearances at those camps and bases were NOT a direct endorsement of the sponsor's product by the military.
Peter Thomas' voice can still be heard in ESPN's current football promos. Alexander Scourby, who had one of the most "distinguished" voices in TV commercials and other narration, is the "other voice" in the second 30 second spot Tang ad [General Foods, the makers of "Tang", was one of the "primary sponsors" of CBS' special coverage of this Apollo mission].
My mom still has a Grape Tang jar. What little product was left in the bottom looks like asphault. I also remember the brief appearence of Grapefruit Tang.
Hey man, I watched this when I was a kid back then and love the moonshots. I can't believe you have this, and in COLOR!! (We only had black+white.) Love this. Thanks!!!
I think I remember the moon mission, My mom used to go to the laundromat on Saturday morning and our cartoons were pre empted for the moon stuff, it made my sister and I angry. I have no memory of Barbie picture maker.
This would have aired Saturday, July 31, 1971, during the first surface EVA. CBS won an Emmy for its Apollo 15 coverage. Western Electric (it's too bad the billboard got truncated) was a longtime sponsor of CBS' Apollo coverage; it was primary sponsor through Apollo 10, then bought partial sponsorship for the rest of CBS' Apollo telecasts. Tang came aboard as a sponsor for Apollo 11's coverage, then returned for Apollo 14-17. And I can never get enough of Harry Kramer's voice.
Love the scary sci-fi music in the background (how stereo-typical of the times -- they might as well have added in a theramin!). Also, WHO wrote the music for the first Tang commercial? That music has a FUNKY beat!

I thought this was 1970-71. In any case, Harry Kramer is the announcer.
was the "this is a commercial" disclaimer on screen when the first two ads first aired ? I guess they didn't want people to get confused.

I sure do miss Grape Tang. 🍇

I had never drank Tang in my life until last year. It was good.
