I'm 50 and recently I've got back in to MTB-ing ideal since I live in the Surrey Hills. well so I thought, while doing gravity trails was fun I was knackered trying to get back to the top. That was until I gave in and bought my first Ebike, what a game changer I'm up and down Surrey Hills like a bloody YoYo now and my fitness is increasing thanks to the amount of riding I can now do. So for me its Ebike's all the way......Bring on the hills!!

51 years old, on mtbs since 1991. i began to feel bored by fireroad-climbs and the few nice trails in my region and focused on roadbiking for some years. Bought an e-MTB as an experiment and was overwhelmed what game-changer this is to the trails in my region and how much fun tech-climbs are. I spend more hours on the bike than in the 90ties, having more fun with same level of exhaustion. Yes, sometimes I do a tour with my humble hardtail, more or less to prove i can still do it. But the tool for fitness and fun is electrified,no debate for me.

I have mild asthma and was struggling to keep up with my friends. Inhaler didnt really help. I eventually got fed up being left for dead and could no longer go out with them. so I bit the bullet and bought an ebike. I can now keep up with them. It's got nothing to do with being unfit. The body is simply getting older. Not happy with the prices of ebikes though.

I don't think me or my partner would have ever owned a bike again in our lives until we rented out some e bikes on holiday abroad.Once we got home both me and my partner both purchased an e bike (Giant fathom E+3 for me,Liv Val E+3 for her) and we love them, they add a level of fun you just don't seem to get on a normal bike.
Ok we don't go up mountains and we just potter about on them really but at least it gets us out and about more and in turn adds a bit more exercise into our lives, which can only be a good thing.

Maybe the most helpful video I have seen. The idea that riding an ebike may lead to riding my regular mountain bike more is huge. I’m buying a levo comp this week but I have a great fs already. I was thinking I was retiring it but now I’m thinking that buying the ebike is really like getting my old bike back as well. I’m 46 and 225 in the pennsylvania mountains. That initial push to get into shape when I only have big mountain uphills on every ride is tough. The idea that the ebike will break the ice and get me fit enough to have fun on my regular bike again is a big idea. As you have said in your video it’s about having fun.

I’ve been mountain biking for the last 6 years , I had to have major heart surgery back in December 2018 and now have a mechanical Aortic valve . I bought a 2018 Specialised Levo carbon in August 2018 to keep my heart rate lower and still enjoy getting up the hills to enjoy the downhills , after my operations I bought the 2019 model in February 2019 , and was back on the bike within 7 weeks. I would definitely recommend anyone recovering from major surgery to buy an E-Bike and you will definitely recover quickly , I set my bike with 10 percent assist to get a good workout so I think I’ll be getting the levo SL next . I’m aged 63 and ride with a mixed age of riders and slowly the E-Bikes are appearing , setting my power assist to 10 percent means I can be out all day and stay as part of the group and getting a good workout .

Fitness is a big factor. Got into MTB's in my 50's and realised quickly how unfit I was. 15 min rides in my local hills was killing me, so I wasn't riding because it just wasn't fun. Pondered eMTB's for years before taking the plunge, and have zero regrets. One hour rides no problem, and have stepped back assistance as fitness has improved. I've since added a hardtail MTB for flatter rides. Love them both!

The wife and I bought an E fatbike each for winter riding and local commuting here in Canada BC. Groomed single track night rides or punting up to the ski hill are the best. We use them for training too for when we can use our other full suspension bikes in summer. It's either shuttles or earn your turns where we are with bikes parks in an hour vicinity of us. They make so much sense around here.

Purchased a used Scott Espark “for my wife” to reintroduce her into MTB. Not only can we ride together now, which is an amazing benefit, but I am finding that I will use her bike once a week and it allows me to have a more fun recovery day in between rides on my IBIS Ripmo. An unexpected benefit, therefore, to having an ebike. MORE miles per week and time on the trail. Plus it adds a new dynamic to rides I have known for years. That too is an unexpected benefit. I am convinced I am VERY fortunate to be in this sport during an era when the products are evolving to allow older riders like me (56) a way to remain deeply involved and active, and able to ride along with my 24 year old son and his mates... I am now a solid fan of the eMTB and look forward to further development.

Interesting and very timely. I just had my first ride on my new hardtail e-mountain bike, never ridden one before! I’m 70 this year and I think it’ll make me fitter than riding my hardtail which is very light but isn’t much fun riding up the hills. Maybe it’s the novelty but I think I’ll find it more fun covering say 30+ hilly miles rather than 20. At the end of the day it’s up to you how much effort you put in, but on hilly stuff you’re still always going to get a workout on an e-bike. I’ll still keep my regular MTB for flatter tracks though. Do I wish I’d bought one a few years earlier? - no, but I feel the time is now right. I’ll also stick with my road bike. It’s very light and there’s something special about riding on good roads without big hills with no assistance.

I love it but the climb to the top was killing me and especially when out with my sons. I am now awaiting a Trek Rail to be delivered hopefully this week. I can't wait. Had a wee shottie on my son in laws Trek and was immediately converted. I'm keeping the Zesty as having different bike options is the way to go. Keep up the great work.

I'm not against the idea of getting an E-MTB, however, let me play devil's advocate here for a bit.
I realize that cost is the limiting factor for most of us to get an E-MTB, but in a few short years, I can foresee the prices coming down as more developments are made and more manufacturers jump onto the bandwagon. So that is a short term problem.
The longer term problem, as I see it, is user serviceability. Most motors nowadays are sealed and not serviceable at all, just taking em apart by yourself voids the warranty. Hell, Shimano motors are the only motors I know of which you can update the firmware yourself. Just bring it to a service center, you say? This might not be possible for some of us, and others might have their own reasons to work on their bikes themselves. The bike industry has always given us the option to wrench on our own bikes, without fear of voiding warranties(unless you're a real special breed of dumbass). Why have they taken away this option for E-MTBs?
Then there's the problem of finding spare parts for your motor, battery or the like. Your motor is out of warranty and it just blew. As the motor is out of warranty, you take it apart, locate the faulty part, and try to search for it online. Only to have nothing turn up. Your only option now is to get a completely new motor. This is in stark contrast with the rest of what's on your bike. You can get any spare part for almost any component you care to name. Broken the cage of your derailleur? There's a spare derailleur cage which you can easily buy out there. Exploded the damper on your fork? No problem, just order another damper online. Not everyone of us can afford to buy a completely new motor, or fork, just to keep riding. And we have that option with the fork, but not the motor.
Lastly, there's the issue of upgradability. Most people can build and customize their bikes however they like. There's a wide selection of fork, shock, handlebars, stems, drivetrain, wheels, brakes, you name it, for the person to choose to spec on their bikes. However, for E-MTBs, you're stuck with whatever motor and battery came on your bike. Don't like it? Too bad. Wanna upgrade your battery to that larger capacity one that brand just announced? Yea, not happening, you peasant. Unless you go buy a new bike with that.
As such, even if my country suddenly decided to lift all the heavy restrictions on electric modes of transport tomorrow, I'll just sit on my arse for that bit longer to see where the E-MTB industry is going. Again, I'm not against getting an E-MTB. I just want to ensure that it's an sound investment which I do not have to throw away after X number of years.
TL;DR: Give us the right the repair everything on our E-bikes, and the option to upgrade everything as well.

    • @givreycham
      @givreycham 4 года назад +2

I agree that the motor is the issue everything else is self-serviceable. Perhaps someone (EMBN !) should push the motor companies to offer an exchange refurbed motor at an affordable cost.......they used to do this with car gearboxes / engines. Maybe a big opening for an entrepreneurial person / company.

I love to ride anything! In my mid 60s I find myself riding more often as I need to limit my running. With a good balance of riding for fitness and pleasure I love riding on roads and fire roads where 90 minutes get me 20-25 miles but when I venture out on my mtn bike that drops significantly. Same great workout just don’t get to see as much scenery.
So, that’s why I’m considering an e mtn bike.
Went out with a friend on one and it was great fun, still a great workout and covered lots of ground. Also made the climbs a fun challenge instead of a grueling grind.

We initially bought bikes as an addition to our other bikes however during the last 15 months since owning them , slowly but surely they have become the only bike we ride . The area we live is the east coast of Suffolk , fantastic XC terrain however its gravity DH or Enduro type trails we love . E-bikes have totally transformed our ride experiences around here and enable us to get just so much enjoyment now, either sessioning or riding great areas we have developed that make so much sense on ebikes. We now have trails that feature great up hill technical climbs that wouldn't be possible on a normal bike linking loads of great punchy DH descents . To put it simply we now get all the fun the guys in mountain areas get and haven't lost fitness either !! Here's the big plus though, we reckon ebikes are driving us to make more fantastic trails which are now being used by all other segments of mountain bikers ! Win win win

Went through all the usual mental twists and turns about Ebikes. Put it off for years, but a couple of years ago when recovering from a bad MTB crash, I was trying to get fit and went to Afan just to do the climbs. Spent ages climbing to the top of Penhydd and two lads breezed up on ebikes, we had a chat at the top and they said they could Penhydd and The Wall in one evening. No longer a consideration for me after that.
Climbing is a nice challenge and a great sense of achievement, but we go up cos we want to go down.
I took delivery of a Canyon Spectral ON last week and it is the nuts. One shakedown ride then popped of to see one of my riding mates who I can only keep up with providing I stay on top of my weight and injury free (which is not as often as I’d like). We went out for a quick blast and while I was quicker than him using assistance, I was still knackered at the end of it.
Then today I went out for another quick spin and did another 1.5 hours and burned 1000 calories that, in all honesty, I wouldn’t have done on my unassisted Bike.
It’s not a substitute for normal bikes, but it’s early days yet and I can see the Ebike getting a lot more action than the others.

The main question for me is, can the moter (in eco mode) significantly (over-)compensate the weight difference, especially at steep parts of a trail. it would be interesting and helpful to have a kind of weight-motor-ratio to make the decision easier. I tend to invest more money in a very light MTB than into a 21kg eMTB.

In my case as a mature returning rider, the only option was an e-bike, even though I have a higher level of fitness now than 20 years ago. If they were not available or as developed as they currently are, then my only option would have been to continue to ride a motor bike. The e-bike allows me to explore further and to more places than I could on a peddly, plus I'm not really interested in putting my bike on a float to take it to the top of the hill and then free-wheeling to the bottom :-)
As to cost, fortunately the motor-bike I sold covered most of the outlay.

I enjoyed my full suspension giant trance for a few years. It was a good workout and decent fun. Now at 43 I just bought my first emtb hardtail. It has opened up a whole new level of riding and for me anyway they are just much more fun. Still a good workout and as bizarre as this is my emtb was more affordable 😂. I definitely think regular mtb should come down in price spending 5-10k in 2024 on a non-motorized mtb is just absurd. Manufacturers really need to think hard about how much they are charging now that emtb are here.

Like Cape Town, parts where I ride don't have uplifts and there are some great down hill tracks but you have to winch yourself back up them and a few runs and you're knackered. eMTB would be ideal in these cases and being a solo rider who like to explore ...

As a technician I don't want anything with electronics. I have enough of that at work. I would like something with extremely good suspension. My price around 3k+ Euros. I live in Germany. They jump, manual, rail turns and allow you to climb super tech uphills.
As far as cost goes there's non e bikes that cost the same amount as eeeessss.
I'm not justifying the price of certain e bikes. In fact I think they are extortionate. However there are entry level options that will fill the majority of riders needs from novice to pro.

You can have fun on an ebike but at the end of the day I couldn't take any credit for smashing a trail, I would have to give it to the motor. If I had no bike I would get an e-bike or a gravel bike as a first choice. Once the battery runs out your pushing the bike home. Yes the e-MTB will challenge steeper terrain for any fitness level. I’m actually downgrading my carbon fiber hardtail Giant MTB to a more narrow tire to create a more versatile all rounder for dirt trails and longer x-country rides that could include pavement? Is the e-MTB more capable yes! At a price, you’re buying into a technology that is quickly evolving. If I had $5;000 to burn then I could purchase an mid-drive eMTB. Specialized is probably 2 years ahead of everyone? So safe to say, that in three years you’ll get the same specialized bike that costs $7k for half the price. Why, economy of scales; the more units sold the cheaper the bikes become, plus battery technology is rapidly developing. I just don’t think there is a huge value in today’s power assist eMTB. Call me a skeptic? If you want a go anywhere bike get a 250cc + dirt bike and it will climb anything go anywhere at insane speeds enough for not a whole lot more money than a high end eMTB. I’m holding off for 2-3 years before I go e-anything. I looked at the Bafang mid-drive kits, but decided no. Now I’m going Schwalbe g-one all around tubeless. Rotational weight makes a big difference on how a bike rolls. Once the battery dies on an eMTB you have a 50 pound bag of dog food with wheels.
