You need to do the segments pedaling/pushing the ebike with no power because theyre broke half the time. Then walk the whole route because theres a good chance your ebike is sent back hoping to get warrantee or fixed, emphasis on "hoping"

@@vert_n_dirt Unlucky man. I've had a Bosch and Yamaha previously without issue and currently on a kenevo. I'm expecting this one to be the one that probably does give me issues, based on some of the stories I see.
It would be nice if the pricing of both mtb and e-bike wasn't such a daunting commitment financially (I showed the missus my dream Canyon spectral, she said, "its f**king more than our alfa romeo"...... point very well made). I understand the "major investments they make in developing technology", but so do yamaha and suzuki, only for not much more you get an engine, ecu and real tech thrown in. It would be nice if people could get more than just the one dream bike if they wanted to, and learn things on one that they can use to get more out of another.
Asked this question in my emtb group yesterday - but question was all electric - would you consider a DH bike like the Kenevo over a XC/all mountain bike if you’re not into DH and more into trails and flow? This partially answers the question - clearly it’s capable as trail/XC bike (good to know), but would you choose it over something that’s specifically designed for XC. Would you choose the Kenovo over the Jam2 or Levo for instance?
The enduro style bike is the best all rounder, 160mm travel front and rear is more than enough for park use, 2m drops and road gasps well as full day XC style riding. I ride the Merida e160 900 and does everything my Glory did and carbon Reign Advance
Thanks for the interesting episode. Sadly this test has no real meaning for most of us, since the majority of e-bikes weights somewhere around 23kg and features a Bosch CX or Yamaha motor. A Canyon, Cube or Haibike would have been significantly more interesting. How about a test 12k Levo vs. 5k Midrange Bosch CX model?
do the same test where you're up against someone who doesn't ride an ebike and only rides leg powered bikes. You'd get a huge shock how the tables would turn.
Been there done that, ebikes are still winners unless you have a pro rider which I found was difficult to keep up with but could be done with effort for a fitter rider
So given the factor of a motor it's like comparing oranges to apples. I'm not saying it's cheating, just different. So anyone trying to show off on an ebike against a normal bike is pretty pointless since they have a motor doing most of the work.
I still don't get this dumb 25kp/h limit in Europe.. I don't feel particularly proud about chipping my bike, but 25kp/h, come on.. at least give us the american version of 27mp/h in Europe..
In most EU countries if a powered bike can go above 25km/h or have more than 250W power it is considered a moped/motorbike. The consequence is that it then requires registration (and plates), tech check-ups, driving licence, third party liability insurance and cannot be ridden in bike lanes (streets/roads only).
I'm curious to see some numbers relating to this presenters fitness and weight. in particular a 1min sprint, 20 min average, and 1 hour average power outputs. because surely a lot of people could do the climb faster than walking...
This is definitely a better comparison of these bikes when used by an average rider. To see their full potential though, they should have gotten someone like Chris Opie from GCN or something. I bet the difference would have been smaller.
Your riding on the XC bike was completely lacking in decent riding technique in the first xc climb. You have been riding ebikes too long. I noticed exactly the same thing when my girlfriend had to ride a proper bike when her unreliable Specialized Turbo Levo FSR completely crapped itself (again!). All of her old quality sit and spin climbing, carrying speed into sections, failing to keep pressure downwards on the bars on climbs and corners, failing to preselect gears. You need to do this comparo with someone that rides BOTH consistently.
It's hard to take EMBN as anything other than shills nowadays. They seem hell bent on comparing E-MTBs with non motorized MTBs and only showing the E-MTBs' merits. Give us the whole picture here. What about the demerits? How easy is it to self service the motor? What are the options when your E-MTB has been discontinued and the motor or battery dies? Doubt these shills would ever address any questions that would put E-MTBs down.
I couldn't agree more, anytime I randomly watch this channel it's the same old shit again and again, ebikes are so much better.... and on and on it goes.
"service the motor" lol it's not like a gas engine bro :) It's likely sealed anyway, and brushless so the only conceivable thing to replace might be the bearings, but by that time you'll probably be too old to ride and your grandkids will have better toys. And what are the options with anything else that's discontinued? Motor would only die if you fiddled with the speed controller to override the limits and then hit it really hard for hours running from mains power (battery is the weakest link so normal usage so this would not even be possible in normal usage). Yes, battery will eventually die for sure, but search aliexpress for e-bike packs, not exactly hard to find, or even to make yourself.
@@iforce2d Yes you're right, the motor is not a gas engine, and it's just a brushless DC motor. But no, don't expect me to believe that it'll go on forever. A fact fact about your MTB is that nothing is indestructible and everything would fail eventually. There's a lot in a motor that can and would fail; the circuit board, cadence sensor, and as you said, bearings. There's a ton of reasons for stuff to fail, from the conditions and way you ride your bike to manufacturing tolerances not being tight enough to as you said, people overriding the speed limits. But just because people choose to void their warranty isn't a reason to take the option of self or third party repair away from them. And don't get me started on how poor the manufacturing tolerances of some crap are, it's not just motors, the whole bicycle industry and then some is guilty of it. And no, motors are not sealed in such a way that they can't be taken apart again then thrown back together. Air forks and shocks are supposed to contain highly pressurized air; which in case you don't know, is a hell load harder than being waterproof; and yet they still are fully user serviceable. As for what options are there for anything that's discontinued? You'll be surprised by how old of a phone you still can get repaired, then. Where there's a demand, as long as the manufacturers don't engage in such anti self repair operations, there'll be a market to respond to it.
I cant believe that people don't get it and you still have to do videos like this. Push bikes are history, pushing isn't cycling and e-biking just opens up the trails to so many more people. It's a great video though. Thank you.
How could a DH E-bike NOT be faster than an XC bike? I'm 68 and will likely get an E-bike once I turn 70. I'm just waiting for weights/price to go down and battery time to go up. Actually, by then maybe I'll just get an electric dirt bike!
A cross country trail should be relatively flat,, since no seat dropper.. No reason to include the downhill bike,,, Should be a simple contest between a strong Cross country rider and a normal Ebike rider
For this "Test" to make any sense you needed 3 riders, one from each dedicated discipline, overall a XC rider would have rinsed the other bikes as was very nearly the result when Jonesy raced against a top BRITISH XC rider at Dalby Forest.
Cause some of us idiots like to pretend we can pedal a bit... I mean I run shimano zee fr cassette on mine (11-38) with a 38 front ring. Not great uphill but tolerable for the flat sections,
Sorry but you are missing the point. The results are accurate, if somewhat subjective, because HE rode all three. Maybe you mean have and experienced xc rider ride all three and then see the results.
What the heck why is there such thing as a downhill e bike it’s not necessary your paying more money and all it’s doing is giving you more weight there is no point of having a motor if your at a downhill park
It actually is, weight isn’t a factor for ebikes like an XC bike and most people don’t live at parks with lifts. Also e-bikes are comparable in price to regular bikes with the same components as long as you shop around and get a deal on Black Friday or something.
@@TheDennisRobb You'll never get an E-MTB with same components / materials for the same price as a regular bike. Not even when you compare apples to oranges (as you do if you compare manufacturer's suggested retail price of a regular bike to some special offer on an E-MTB). I got from the same manufacturer (cCube) two bikes an E-MTB (Stereo Hybrid 140 SL 500) and an enduro bike (Stereo 170 SL). The MSRP is the same for both. Here The difference in components (E-MTB vs enduro : E-MTB Fox 34 Rhythm vs Fox Factory , Fox Float DPS EVOL vs Fox Float X2 Factory, CUBE Dropper Post vs Fox Transfer Factory, Cube EX30 Wheels vs Newmen Evolution SL A.30. So the difference is huge if you consider the price difference between these parts.
a bike that's designed for downhill beating a dh bike no surprise there, but what was the point of testing in pedaling versus traditional bikes of course it's going to be faster. as a shuttle the e-bike is superb, up and down in no time but assisted motor versus legs is a pointless video, its just pandering to the already converted.
Thought the video was interesting to a point to see if a DH ebike could cut it doing cross country . Should have been a cross country ebike in test though!
I dont even need to watch past 3 mins to know the answer. Can a 90nm DH ebike keep up with a cross country non ebike?? I mean really???!!!. 🙄 I started watching this assuming both were ebikes. I guess that would make it too fair. Jeeez.
So you basically put restrictive gears on the DH bikes to prove to yourselves that they can't go uphill. Congrats, the lemon prize of iditoism for mountainbikers :D
I buy underpriced 2nd hand DH bikes just to turn them into DIY ebikes. So very worth it for me :D

For people that prefer downhill and aren't interested in cycling uphill or aerobic activity, definitely yes. A few friends of mine have them for weekend rides, bus ride uphill and smash the hill two or three times a day. BTW, not my coup of tea ;-)
For most people I would say no. Even if you line close to a bike park, unless you're going like every week, it would be hard to justify it. You could easily take an all mountain/enduro bike to a DH park and not be held back. Even going to a bike park every week I would still personally hesitate to get a downhill bike.
Completely useless in my eyes. I‘d rather buy a Levo and a normal DH bike for the bikepark. I guess if you ride the Kenevo on rough DH tracks something brakes sooner or later and it‘s expensive as hell.
Would you please stop making it all about time? I NEVER time my rides because I don't care. I care how it feels. If I want to winch myself uphill and then down I'll take my ebike. If I just want to get out and away I'll take my hardtail. Can I ride my ebike on a cross country route? Of course! but it's not as much fun for me as a light hardtail. I just wish you focused on the fun/feel aspect more than the stopwatch.
why are you racing manual bikes against motorized bikes? your comparing apples with oranges, pointless as anyone with a brain would know a motorized bike would be faster as it has a motor....
The motor assistance cuts at 15mph not the speed. All it means is your pedalling a heavy inefficient bike after this speed. Just need to work harder to hit 30mph.
I mean they do call em push bikes but i climb my commencal dh with ease and go past some xc riders so i think it might just the depend od the rider. I mean chris has touched a non e bike in a while 😅 jk
The speed limits on ebikes is a joke. Comparisons like this just shows how pointless they are. Just about anyone can pedal faster than 15mph. If they need to have a limt it should be 25mph, or not have a limit but have speed limits on roads/paths for all riders.
This Video actually demonstrates that the assist limit is too high and needs reduced... certainly zero case to increase it as is shown here as even DH style Ebike is still faster than an XC bike.. hence no possible case the limit needs increased.
Chris on a state of the art XC race machine -- 3:00. Chris walking with 40lbs of dead weight -- 3:15. So, my question: how much did Specialized pay you? Next time get an athletic XC racer to do a proper race instead of a chubby-ish middle aged man with a double chin walking bikes uphill!!! Granted, the E bike will probably still win, but at least it will be an actual race.
I feel like the issue on the xc bike was that he wasn’t weighting it properly on the climb, they tend to lift the front wheel so you need to find a balance between the two, that and maybe a higher gear and some “oomph”.
I'm going to start a petition to ban analogue bikes from trails. They are too slow and are a danger to ebike riders and they just get in the way. I liken this to allowing a horse and cart on the M6..

I think too many people get DH bikes when they would be much better off with a mid travel bike in the 150mm range.
I have 2 dh bikes and a 160f/152r am/trail bike and I far prefer the dh bikes even if I have to hike up.
You need to do the segments pedaling/pushing the ebike with no power because theyre broke half the time. Then walk the whole route because theres a good chance your ebike is sent back hoping to get warrantee or fixed, emphasis on "hoping"
strange that, I've had 4 e-mtb over 3 years and never broken down once. 12k miles annually too and not road miles.
@@jamesuk9 wish i could say the same. I've had 3 shut downs in only 1700km. Current one has it out of action for 3 weeks and counting. Shimano diagnostic tool at the lbs turned up nothing. No idea what to do at this point
@@vert_n_dirt Unlucky man. I've had a Bosch and Yamaha previously without issue and currently on a kenevo. I'm expecting this one to be the one that probably does give me issues, based on some of the stories I see.
@@jamesuk9 bosch is probably the way to go. Motor support and parts seem to be lacking in canada
I've been riding a bafang ultra max for 1000km. No issues at all.
Better than a chairlift you don’t have to wait in line 😂😂😂
do the same test where you're up against someone who doesn't ride an ebike and only rides leg powered bikes.
AFM I agree, it’s a completely different thing.
I still don't get this dumb 25kp/h limit in Europe.. I don't feel particularly proud about chipping my bike, but 25kp/h, come on.. at least give us the american version of 27mp/h in Europe..
Americans get 20 mph not 27
In most EU countries if a powered bike can go above 25km/h or have more than 250W power it is considered a moped/motorbike.
Comparing Apples to Oranges!!! E bikes will dominate traditional bikes hands down!!!
Turbo Levo does it all
Haibike DWNHLL Pro with SRAM EX1 gearing, doesn't get much better ;)
My only gripe with it is that they stopped selling it in the UK
Great video I just installed a speed box on my friends Haibike to bypass the limiter. E bikes rule! Keep up the good work!
The slow mo at 16:00 belongs in a GMBN video "how not to pick a line"
The question has now become... why would you buy a push bike anymore? (this question excludes people of the Netherlands)
because money???
Thank you.
Haha, with that thinking hardtails would not exist anymore.
For this "Test" to make any sense you needed 3 riders, one from each dedicated discipline, overall a XC rider would have rinsed the other bikes as was very nearly the result when Jonesy raced against a top BRITISH XC rider at Dalby Forest.
that would be a different test. You should film that one!

I still don’t understand why manual DH bikes aren’t all single speeds.
Cause some of us idiots like to pretend we can pedal a bit... I mean I run shimano zee fr cassette on mine (11-38) with a 38 front ring. Not great uphill but tolerable for the flat sections,
Next time on embn: what is faster on a quarter mile? An e bike or a pogo stick...c'mon
Kenevo is sold out till 2021 :(
King Kenevo!
Perhaps if you rode your ebike against an xc rider you would get more accurate results
Sorry but you are missing the point. The results are accurate, if somewhat subjective, because HE rode all three. Maybe you mean have and experienced xc rider ride all three and then see the results.
Love these vids and channel but all very expensive for average jo
Kenevo is king and sold out all over the world
If you hold the first button on the ebike it pedals for you for the steep steep climbes found that on mine todah 😂
a bike that's designed for downhill beating a dh bike no surprise there, but what was the point of testing in pedaling versus traditional bikes of course it's going to be faster. as a shuttle the e-bike is superb, up and down in no time but assisted motor versus legs is a pointless video, its just pandering to the already converted.
totally agree, whats the point, its obvious that a motorized bike is going to be faster than a mandrolic bike
Content? And people like myself wanted to see it I guess.
Thought the video was interesting to a point to see if a DH ebike could cut it doing cross country . Should have been a cross country ebike in test though!
Ok so it turns out that when you don’t have to pedal the bike you go faster
Look out for the next video where we find out if the grass is green and the sky is blue.
Lmao, that's why i ride levo too dam fun😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
I dont even need to watch past 3 mins to know the answer. Can a 90nm DH ebike keep up with a cross country non ebike?? I mean really???!!!. 🙄 I started watching this assuming both were ebikes. I guess that would make it too fair. Jeeez.
Where are the downhill fat bikes?
So you basically put restrictive gears on the DH bikes to prove to yourselves that they can't go uphill. Congrats, the lemon prize of iditoism for mountainbikers :D
To be honest is a downhill bike even worth the money?
Depends on what you want to use it for.
Its worth the money if you have ski flit to the top.
For most people I would say no. Even if you line close to a bike park, unless you're going like every week, it would be hard to justify it. You could easily take an all mountain/enduro bike to a DH park and not be held back. Even going to a bike park every week I would still personally hesitate to get a downhill bike.
So a motorcycle is quicker than a bicycle, who'd have thought it 🤔
Completely useless in my eyes.
I‘d rather buy a Levo and a normal DH bike for the bikepark. I guess if you ride the Kenevo on rough DH tracks something brakes sooner or later and it‘s expensive as hell.
The downhills section what terrible u took 3 different line so it wasn't even far tbh
This channel is obsessed with telling us how much better ebikes are over mtb, surely there are other topics to focus on.
30mph ok with xc bike but speed cuts at 15mph on ebike lol
The motor assistance cuts at 15mph not the speed. All it means is your pedalling a heavy inefficient bike after this speed. Just need to work harder to hit 30mph.
Not my downhill e mtnb my speed cuts off at 45mph and I am running a 1000watt mid drive
Donald Bartholomew what bike does that? 😊
Buy a speedchip and your e bike goes 50 mph ... simple
@@TheWatcherofallgoodthings The A Tracker with the bafang ultra motor made by Volton bikes.
I mean they do call em push bikes but i climb my commencal dh with ease and go past some xc riders so i think it might just the depend od the rider. I mean chris has touched a non e bike in a while 😅 jk
Also forgot to say that all trails in my area are just normal fire road or gravel roads so that might be also the biggest difference
@@RocketMagnetUK How exactly does this video demonstrate the limit is too high? Too high for what?
Delimited Gen1 2018 Levo would be much quicker again! 25mph average.
Climbing in flats on an XC bike ..... sigh - atleast wear clipless if you are going to ride an XC bike?
97% of energy comes from down strokes. Clipless do not matter.
@@Warrantti Proof?
I'm going to start a petition to ban analogue bikes from trails. They are too slow and are a danger to ebike riders and they just get in the way. I liken this to allowing a horse and cart on the M6..
