    I'm surprised how much more I enjoyed the Near Future chapter in the remake - the added combat information plus the slight buff to Akira made me actually find it enjoyable instead of an utterly frustrating slog.
    Honorable mention to Dr. Tobei's absolutely over-the-top voice acting that had me in stitches!
    (And yes, the skip function does work with the Doc's crafting system, which definitely helped save my sanity)

      The Near Future chapter is my least favorite, but I will be lying if Dr. Tobei did’s voice-acting did not keep me incredibly energized; his VA sounded as if he was having the time of his life.

    You can skip the Dr. Tobei item creation cutscenes if you'd like! Despite it's flaws, I enjoyed this chapter a lot. I would say that the slow build up was worth the big finale with the Steel Titan.

    One thing you didn't mention: Some of Akira's attacks that had charge times in the original (ex. Sleet Image/Behind You and Hell Image/Six Feet Under) can be used instantly in the remake.

    From my experiences with the original, and the remake, a lot more things were fixed.
    Akira has been massively buffed; and as a result, while he's not perfect. He fits alongside the rest of the cast very well. With some items that buff his Special Attack; Akira is actually super powerful, especially if the enemy is weak to Holy Smackdown or Judgement Day. But the key thing, is Judgement Day now throws every status effect in the book onto the enemy; against certain enemies; this is an instant kill, and against certain bosses; this basically means shutting down their offense, defense and ability to aim. Which can majorly give Akira a huge edge for healing his team... in general, his attacks have a ton of variety too, with him having almost every element, which makes him great for the final chapter; because Elemental weaknesses matter a lot more in the remake.
    In addition; the ability to skip Dr. Tobei's item creation, and the fact that you are guided on where to go much more; makes this chapter a huge success in my eyes. You couldn't really change too much of the weirdness, because a lot of it was parodying anime; and anime often do have a ton of pointless padding in them. That's the joke.
    Plus, the fact you now carry over the team's entire inventory, and not just what's equipped on the Main Character; makes Akira's chapter super useful, since you can grind out Robo Parts for Cube, and get buttloads of Potion No 9's for the final scenario. I don't mind the slower pace, because honestly, the game itself was just so endearing, I didn't mind that it had slightly reduced speed, I just wanted to enjoy it while it lasted.

    • @VideoGaming4Dummies
      @VideoGaming4Dummies 2 года назад +4

      As I understand it, consumables or Robotic Enhancements (Power Parts) CAN'T be brought to the final chapter. Probably so people can't cheese the last chapter by buffing Cube straight away or be stocked with super powerful healing items right out of the gate. It's only equipment items that are retained.
      Also, not to be THAT guy, but I think you meant "Holy Smackdown" and "Judgement Day" for Akira's attacks.

    • @Kohchu
      @Kohchu 2 года назад +7

      @@VideoGaming4Dummies
      They changed the final chapter in the remake. When you recruit a character, you get ALL the items they had in their inventory, added to yours. So if you grind out stuff in each chapter; you're set in that chapter. Which actually balances that Chapter out, because it means if you start as Sundown, you have some healing items, and won't just get OHKO'd by half the monsters in that chapter due to his abysmal defense until you recruit someone else. So I view this as nothing but an improvement. There maybe a limit to how many of an item you can bring, but I didn't see one, since I brought all the Frag Grenades and Throwing Knives I picked up from Akira's final dungeon with me, and still had all my Potion No 9s. It also means, if you forgot to equip stuff like the Rock of Rocks, and King Fang/Cola Bottle, or the Lacquered Medicine Box; you don't perma-lose them, unless you replay the chapter again.
      In the original game, it was only what your Heroes had on.
      Holy Smackdown/Holy Blow/Holy Beatdown, it gets the same message across no matter how you say lol But I fixed it regardless.

    • @siothio
      @siothio 2 года назад +1

      They don't let you bring the robot parts from Akira's Chapter. I had saved up 9 of them and when I got to the final chapter they were gone

    • @Kohchu
      @Kohchu 2 года назад

      @@siothio Did you get any dropped while fighting enemies in the last chapter? If that's the case, the 9 would've been added on top of the ones you already had. If not; then maybe they put a failsafe to stop Cube from being able to be massively improved; which would be balanced and fair; since you can grind them out anyway.
      But I know they let you carry over basically everything else.

    The cutscene skip does work when Dr. Tobei makes stuff for you

    Definitely seems a case of "the improvements didn't fix the core issues, but it's still somewhat better than the original." If you didn't like the original much it makes sense that your opinion wouldn't have gone up drastically, but there are a few adjustments that at least made it modestly less annoying.

    Ironically, part of the reason I was able to have fun in Akira's chapter was your original video. Thanks to it, I knew in advance that fighting the increasingly stronger Crusaders in town and giving items to Tobei (which became much less annoying after I tried skipping and it worked) was worth it so I could deal with the Commanders later. Knowing the machine at the end was a puzzle boss was also a huge help.
    By contrast, the only chapter I didn't enjoy was Oboromaru's. To make a long story short, the radar doesn't care if you're going for a pacifist run and will insist you fight the Jailer and then release the wrong prisoner. My personal experience is that fighting the Jailer as your first encounter is really frustrating and even when I won I saw that it counted as a life taken so I tried resetting to try going for a different solution. In the process I got so lost that I triggered Genmai's fight before rescuing the prisoner. After that I gave up my pacifist run and curbstomped Gamahebi. This gave me one last slap in the face when I reached Oersted's final chapter and Gamahebi was still balanced around a pacifist run, making Oboromaru the most frustrating of the fights.

    • @VonFirflirch
      @VonFirflirch 2 года назад +2

      Oh, fuck that Chapter.
      IIRC, you also need to defeat that Genmai in a specific way, so that he drops an item you NEED for the Pacifist reward. And even if you do get it, you're still not in the clear due to gimmicks involving what you get out of his item...

      I assume the Radar is still simply a guideline? (I don't even have a Nintendo Switch to play LAL Switch.) Because if it is, it means you don't have to follow its orders without question, thereby fitting a theme of the chapter.

    Fists of rage is probably closer to what it was in Japanese. A lot of fan translations back in the day would just pick random swear words when someone was speaking "impolitely" without regards for subtlety. That way they can say it's more "Adult".
    It's also why Odie O'bright doesn't talk about how he mutilated his opponents - he never did in the original japanese text. I do believe the implication that he killed them was still there, just not "I killed and mutilated them and now I'll do it to you muahahaha"

Honestly not sure why the pacifist ninja run was not considered a Worst Levels Ever, since you have to follow very obtuse and linear steps to get it, and can fail right before the end, forcing you to go back and do the entire damn thing over again - but to own their each and whatnot.

    Well if I'm going to be honest, in my opinion I think the ninja chapter is a bit more painful than the Mecha chapter, because like the Mecha chapter it's also easy to get lost in the ninja chapter if you're looking for the best equipment in the chapter doing this with minimal kills and if you don't know what you're doing. That AND oboro is almost as weak as Akira, but at least oboro has better attacks than Akira. (I'm only referring to the original version though)

  • @keeganapsey9238
    @keeganapsey9238 2 года назад +8

    I'll be honest, I've been taking this remake nice and slow, to the point where I won't run unless I think the character I'm playing would run. So I don't particularly mind the slower movement. Some of the cutscenes are a bit slow, perhaps, but the addition of the skip feature would no doubt help to offset that. I would also say that Fists of Rage is probably a more reasonable translation, but the fan translation is better for the rhyme. The only real gripe I have with this version is the line that Matsu starts the first fight with ("I'm the taiyaki guy!" vs "I'm a local businessman!"; the former implies he has a reputation, the latter just sounds silly, they could have fixed it by instead making the line before "I'm a local businessman..." and then follow it up with "...in the business of kicking your sorry behinds!" or something like that). Also, the censorship of the items Watanabe steals for you is honestly a positive change to me, even if pocket money somehow providing defense makes little sense (the implications of the uncensored version were honestly just gross).

    • @kirua258
      @kirua258 2 года назад +2

      To be fair, I'm pretty sure it was intended to be a silly thing. some sort of "I'm cool, I have sunglasses, You don't know me!? I'm A NOBODY!". I don't know if you have seen Big hero 6 but one character use that kind of sillyness at a point "The Day, I'm the college's Mascot, but the night! I'm also the college Mascot". It's intended to create some expectations (Matsu would be some rockstar? A war hero?) to just break it without warning.

    This is actually my favorite of the chapters, but I understand the complaints people had with it. I feel like the radar, being able to skip cutscenes, and Akira’s buffs make it a lot less of a pain in the remake. Akira’s buffs are probably the biggest, as a lot of his charge times on attacks were completely removed. Its also much easier to dodge the enemy encounters in the building. Overall, the chapter is still kinda “carried” by the music and aesthetics, but it just hits the right buttons for me. That’s why Live-a-Live is great, everyone’s least favorite chapter is someone else’s favorite.

    Odio has a move that can seal your legs, so you may have to use other moves if he does. The fight is still in your favor though.
    You might want to use the crafting system if you expect to survive combat. The old list from GameFAQs still holds up and I
    got my Steel-Toed shoes and 5 biker belts, some Potion NO. 9s, and waited until I got Taro the Turtle before doing any real
    combat.
    Killing all the enemies first BEFORE you kill the leader will get you Robot Parts (+10 HP, and +1 Acc/Eva for Taro), as well
    as Napalm Grenades you can turn into badass weapon skills if Taro equips them. Laquaur/Goldfish/Chick Shot do some nice damage.
    My last playthrough of the SNES game I got Pogo to level 18-20 and took on the King Mammoth and Basic Rock and my Akira STILL
    tanked a Pogo's 16 Ultimate to the face and defeated Pogo in hand to hand combat via Low Kick/Elbow. (Haven't gotten that
    far in the renake yet, and my Pogo there is 14 but with King Mammoth under his belt).
    You MUST do the crafting in chapters that have it and it sucks if you don't have a guide. But once you know what to make it's
    fairly strightforward. If you do not craft anything or do the minimum in Pogo's chapter, Zaki will kick your ass.
    I do feel like having to break all the machines FIRST instead of the leader to get parts is annoying, and being stuck without
    knowing what to do is annoying, and Akira's skills are kind of annoying to use because the encounters don't really play to his skill
    set. Pogo is just bursting with varied skills that are fun and helpful to use, Oboro is standard ninja stuff but still cool,
    Masaru's not so much, but the still work pretty well in his chapter. I notice Akira's skills work a lot better in the final chapter
    than his own.
    To me the Ninja Chapter was the most convuluted one, I still liked it because it had ninjas in it.

    I really enjoyed Near Future both here and in the original, but that is probably because of my bias for its themes of Mecha stuff and Akira (the anime) being stuff I absolutely love. That, and I really vibe with Akira (the character), both gameplay wise and character wise. He may not be really really strong damage wise like Sundown or Pogo, but his debuffs are fun to mess around with and his range is great. Made him the Protag of my finale run, even.
    I do understand all of the problems you have with the chapter, tho. there is just a lot of back n forth, but I was immersed in the world to the point that I think I didnt mind it too much.

    It is disappointing the useless failure chance of crafting was not removed, but thank goodness for the almighty skip button. (Still gets annoying after a while though…) Found Akira interesting to use in his chapter, though I found myself more heavily leaning on Taro when leader enemies started having incredibly high special defense to the point Akira could barely dent them with his elemental attacks… Haven’t quite made it to the finale yet (currently about a third through Oerstead’s chapter), so not sure how he performs there quite yet.

    Akira’s chapter was… kinda bland for me. Neither great nor terrible. However, I did enjoy his combat scenarios. I liked that I couldn’t tank enemy attacks with him and that I had to actually analyze enemy formations to win.
    But my most hated chapter BY FAR is Oersted’s. Yes, his story has one hell of a twist that I won’t spoil here. But why did they have to use random battles for his chapter? None of the other chapters have random battles and they make this chapter so much longer than it needs to be. There were so many instances where I just wanted to reach the marked waypoint to continue the story and nearly every time I had to slug through 4-6 battles to reach my destination. I hate that this chapter kinda forces you to grind because of random battles.

    Another thing the remake does is changing the original script in its English translation.
    Many of the lines changed, therefore also altering the personalities of many characters.
    The biggest change has to be Matsu's "OTOKO NO ROMAN" lines which boils down to manly pride and the duty of seeing things through as a man, telling Taeko often to outright shut up (which Akira also does too), how a woman shouldn't interfere with a man's determination, etc. Also all those "..." lines changed into added dialogues in the English version.
    It could be that the English localization did those changes to be less abrasive in today's society, which I can understand.
    For those who want to the original Japanese script, there is always the option to play in with Japanese voices and/or Japanese texts, which are the same as the original SNES version.

    I finished this chapter today, and it was the only chapter I hadn't played in the SNES version (along with the final one), and I also tried to spoil myself the least amount of things possible about it, and I honestly enjoyed it alot!
    I was playing without radar nor tutorials (so I didn't find about crafting until the end, oops!), and I didn't get stuck too much, just one time near the end.
    Besides, I find Akira really fun with the whole "long range status sniper" moveset, it just feels nice to send 12 cars to sleep and proceed to destroy them with Matsu.
    As for the Steel Titan section, jeez it was extremely fun! I think the voice acting and new graphics really add to the remake, since it makes battles a lot more entertaining with the constant voicelines, also Odeo is the first boss to almost kill me in the remake, funny enough (mainly because I like using moves randomly to make it more entertaining, and I didn't try Babylonian Kick until halfway through, those 700dmg saved my run lol).
    The only real flaws I had are that it's kind of slow at the beggining, also, you probably know this already, but you can skip the crafting cutscene, I began skipping it after the first time.

    For me, Cube is the worst one. Cube is a cute character and the story during his segment is cool, but I REALLY wanted to get that shit over with in the remake because of all the backtracking and horrible pacing. It was the third scenario I played after Masaru and Pogo. The lack of combat doesn't really help either. The waypoints made it only slightly more tolerable than the SNES game.
    I knew the easiest way through Masaru's story and it was by far the shortest so I did that one first.
    I think this time I'll do Oboro's story last. I just beat Shifu's and am playing Sundown's story. Next will be Akira and then Oboromaru.

    Since lots of people in this comments section are discussing their least favorite chapters, I might as well give my two cents.
    I did NOT care for the Prehistoric chapter. It just felt too tonally different from the rest of the game- and while sure, that might be a breath of fresh air for some, for me it just felt jarring. That, and just... Gori in general. I do NOT care for him in the slightest. I would like the chapter WAY more as a whole if Gori just wasn't there, replaced by some other character, or hell, replaced with Beru completely as your other party member.
    And the GODDAMN MAMMOTHS are just ANNOYING. I didn't fight everything I came across early on, just enough to level a few times over the minimum, but god DAMN it just felt horrid every time I had to deal with one of the tanky bastards.
    And EVERY FIGHT with Zaki is just the SAME THING, just with different stats depending on which fight it is. It just gets tiring repeating it three times- at least with the three fights with Mad Dog, you can completely skip at least one or two of them if I remember correctly, and Mad Dog feels more fleshed out as a rival to Sundown than Zaki did to Pogo.
    Granted, these are probably more personal gripes rather than some of the more objective flaws with the Mecha chapter, like the item forging and the unnecessarily convoluted and long steps to activate the Steel Titan, but I just ended up enjoying the Prehistoric chapter less than the Mecha chapter as a whole.
    And I DIRECTLY FOUGHT W-1 rather than going for the back, because I just didn't think to try that at the time. And it was horrible.
    The remake even fucked up Pogo's dialogue at the end of the chapter. "LOVE" being the first word spoken by a human, while kinda cheesy, was brilliant thematically, what with the main antagonist being the god of all hatred. It was one of the chapter's few redeeming qualities, and it got ripped away.

    • @DarkButz
      @DarkButz 2 года назад

      I'll add that I absolutely hated the King Mammoth fight in the prehistoric chapter. It feels like 90% of the battle is you getting lucky with Pogo hitting for 300-500 damage with his final attack (which also lowers Pogo's stats) AND the mammoth not spamming its fire tile attacks. And yes, it's TOTALLY FAIR that it has absorb on the fire tiles AND the healing is additive depending on how many tiles he's standing on, meaning it can restore over 200HP per turn. Yes, there's Gori's poop throw with a chance of poison, but poison tiles deal almost no damage and he will just use his fire tile attacks to negate them again. Granted it's an optional fight, but the items it drops are too good to ignore.

    Well, I will say, you CAN skip the upgrade scenes when they play - that's what I did when I grinded out the best equipment this chapter.
    Personally, I found Twilight of Edo more frustrating than this one, but that's because I went through the arduous task of following a guide so I wouldn't kill anyone, which...probably isn't how the makers of the game expected you to approach the chapter your first time.
    I will say one huge gripe I have with this chapter that I don't think you mentioned in either video - namely, the world map. The linear streets and enemy patrols means that you're doomed to run into an enemy if you try to go directly from the orphanage to the antique store - and if you flee from the battle, that enemy is STILL THERE and you can't go through him. Worst comes to worst, you can become sandwiched between two of them. I don't know why they made it like that.
