- Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones.
Random number generators (RNG for short) is an odd beast. Adding random factors to games can enhance them in many exciting ways if done right. If it's done poorly, however, it can sour the experience like nothing else...
Every pokemon decision be like:
"Do you want to go?"
- No
"Understandable, can we go now?"

It's a known psychological phenomenon that people enjoy doing things more when they aren't told to do them for a reward. Basically, intrinsic rewards lead to more enjoyment than extrinsic rewards, if that makes sense to anyone reading this.
Thank you for the info, seriously. Studying psychology next year.
ah yes.. the "i was gonna clean my room but mom told me so im not gonna do it" effect
That's simple: Because when you do it without a reward involved you may put all the effort you want instead of the effort you need, with all the pressure associated.

Aegis Cave has one redeeming quality at least.
It’s got an absolutely jamming music track.
Concealed Ruins has a remix of it too...but, then again, is it worth getting Earth Power-ed to insanity across giant rooms by Nidoqueens constantly for?
thank goodness for the Sky Jukebox!
its good then that the dungeon you unlock for doing this has similar music

Hm? Team Charm? What's wrong with them, I thought the Special episode was-
*Remembers all the repressed memories of Aeigis Cave*
O-oh... Oh no....
At least the letter stones do a lot damage so the ones that aren’t of a useful letter are still nice
- FireFox6 - nothing is difficult that you are allowed to bring partners in post smeargle if you use a smeargle. Though not everyone wants to use what is literally the strongest mon in mystery dungeon right after returning from the expedition to fogbound lake
- FireFox6 - oh yeah. Even then the team charm one isn’t outstandingly difficult. Team charm is a pretty strong group and as long as you use the items gotten in the dungeons effectively it’s not as hard as for example bidoof’s episode which you are on a time limit for the first half caused by snowver setting hail. And when you fight the bandits dugtrio can actually kill you. While the bandits are actually pretty manageable solo with gravelrocks and debuff seeds if you get them on the way up. So yes you can win against them solo and feel all good about yourself then get ohko by dugtrio because he carries magnitude and have to do the dungeon again. At least without snowver its way easier.
The Aggron gang fight in the special episode was very frustrating when replaying the game
@@Sombres It's been a while, but IIRC, the special episode is a lot easier if you keep restarting it until Lopunny has Agility in her starting moveset, because Agility is, well, Agility.

Wanna make this dungeon even worse? If you want to recruit the Regis, you have to repeat the ICE, ROCK, STEEL puzzle and there's a chance the Regi might not join you, so you have to do the puzzle again!
Let's say Regice and Regirock joined you, but not Registeel; doesn't matter, you still have to do the Unown puzzles to reach it.
That seems cruel.
Clearly, "respect of the player's time" wasn't on their mind, during the development of the old PMD games. x)
This is one of the reason I used a Wonder Mail generator to give me the Unown stones.
legendaries join you guaranteed. The dungeon isn’t even that bad or too long it’s just been exaggerated for the vid
@@vyon2669 The only legendary that 100% guaranteed to join you is Regigigas. Regirock, Regice, and Registeel is at -12%, which makes it impossible to recruit at levels below 50, and even when you're at level 50+, the recruitment rate is now 0.5%, which is still low unless you have Friend Bow, Amber Tear, or Golden Mask. Also, in the case of Explorers of Darkness, Mewtwo is at -22% recruitment rate, which is way, WAY lower than the Regis, and Mewtwo isn't even guaranteed to appear when you have Secret Slab or Mystery Part in Explorers of Darkness.
you know, it would be fun if the game had a secret way of going forward.
Something like "If you complete the caves 5 times without collecting stones, the team charm will leave the tomb open for you"
I actually suffered through Aegis cave a little more than anyone else should (although it didn't particularly bother me all too much) because of something stupid I wanted. You don't need them for anything, but I wanted an M stone because my name (Meredith) starts with that letter. Yep, I went and tracked down a 13th stone just because I'm a narcissist. How fun.
Edit: Yes, I know wonder mail generators are a thing, but I only use those if I absolutely feel that I must.
It's a nice name, at least!

Yikes, that uh..
I legit forgot abour Aegis cave and was instead racking my brains about what was so bad in the Team Charm side story
I think most of us repressed Aegis cave.
I ignored this video because I thought it was on Team Cham's special episode. I rather like that one.
“Is that Team Charm? I haven’t seen them in ages! I didn’t remember their Special Story being all that terrible, tho-“
*remembers the Unowns*
_”oh.”_
And sometimes you just DO NOT FIND THE F**KING STONES, and the wind starts to blow, so you are forced to run out of that floor, and the next floor doesn't have the Unown you needed haha it sucks.
And also, I think you have to return to Aegis Cave, and do everything again... if you want to recruit the regis! Geez... lol

@@allingbrodniak8819 until you complete the dungeon.
and to this day, outside of the anime, poor Unown is associated with absolute _tedium_
Aegis Cave is RNG: The Dungeon already, but add to the fun if you're trying to recruit the Regis, or, in one of the original _Explorers_ games, MEWTWO. As much as I love _Sky_ and its improvements, no game is perfect, and the thought process behind largely-unchanged Rage-is Cave is one I really can't grasp after all these years...
I don't think rescuing Team Charm is a damsel in distress situation and more of a, "**You** are the main character, not them" The same thing happens to Grovyle. He rushes ahead, loses even though he should be much stronger than you are and you beat the pokemon he lost to. Same thing here
That's something tha tkinda doesn't make sense. Both Grovyle and Team charm are supposed to be stronger and more experienced than you yet you defeat the same pokemon they've lost to. That's kinda sounds plot armor in a video game.
True but the difference is Grovyle was caught off guard by Spiritomb whereas Team Charm wasn't and actually lost to Registeel without being caught off guard.
@@bronzesmith4568 you as the player arguably beat the god of time tho so i would argue the player at the time of the regis is more powerful than team charm.
@@Yakasuki Oh yeah. Totally didn't take that into consideration. That actually does make sense now that I think about it.
3 years late to the argument, but i'd like to add that while you're fighting spiritomb, he is also still paralysing grovyle; which is probably weakening them, allowing you to defeat them despite the probable level gap

O-Oh... It's Aegis Cave. I understand, I understand.
Go on.
whoisthisgit: *enters a floor*
Hexa: Yeah, this is big brain time
I have a feeling that if this game came out today, hatterene would probably be a part of team charm
It'd make sense for Hatterene to lose to Registeel too
I wonder if there are romhacks of this gamr which do this(explorers has a booming romhacking scne thanks to skytemple)
I see the thumbnail and I'm instantly reminded of AEGIS CAVE.
GOD.
I *HATE* THAT PLACE!
Edit: Wait. You can throw the stones?!
They are like Blast Seeds?!
WHY HAVE I NOT KNOWN THIS?!
oh my god, this dungeon!
I remember that I would just stand around at the exit and have my two partners, one of them being Dialga, kill off the Unown until the gust started blowing
and the rocks would take up precious inventory space, ugh...
What makes it worse is if you want to recruit the Regis, you have to go through with the whole thing a Second time, and pray that they ask you join you. If not, you'll have to do it allagain, and again, and AGAIN, Until Regirock, Regice, and Registeel decide you're cool enough to join up with. At least Regigigas just has to be defeated twice to recruit him.
@@darksoul1004 What an oddly spiteful thing to put in your game. Then again, a lot of games are oddly spiteful at times. There's no way they actually thought it'd be fun to make you go through that.

5:12 - As you've noticed here, not all Unown appear at once. It's not because they're specifically programmed like that, it's because of a certain thing that happens in Explorers (but not in Red/Blue Rescue Team).
The floor spawn limit; if there's more than 14 species eligible to spawn on the given floor, the game will choose only 14 of them. And yes, Unown forms count as separate species. This limit is never even approached in Rescue Team because wild Pokemon are distributed more uniquely (you can see this mostly at the Unown Relic, where the forms appear on specific floors). This does have its downsides, though, like some Pokemon being absurdly hard to find (I'm looking at you, Exeggcute...)
6:52 - This one is because they don't actually spawn with the stones, the game only checks for them after you KO them (the Treasure Boxes are the same).
When I saw the red stone after beating regigigas, I had a heart attack as I thought I would have to get the unknown stones for regigigas
Oh boy, if you needed to collect the stones to spell "n-o-r-m-a-l" to unlock the regigigas puzzle you would've lost your mind lol. three letters for ice, four for rock, five for steel, and then six for normal.
nah dude, make it 9 for R-E-G-I-G-I-G-A-S

I love how vague those directions are. "South-east"
I wish there were a game where you end up going into the wrong dungeon as a result x)
Not gonna lie, with the stuff that was added to the first game's remake, I don't think I'd ever be able to go back to the previous ones. I've got high hopes for the next remake, if they can fix what was wrong wih the first one. :D
The ONE thing that's unforgivable to me is they got rid of the normal attack almost entierly. The only way to get a normal attack is to have at least one status move and run out of PP on all attack moves, THEN switch to another party member and let your out of PP party member attack. I don't get how they sacrificed such a useful move for usability (the ability to automatically select the best move at the press of a button).
@@skiller5034
It had me worried at first, honestly.
But after doing everything that isn't tedious like what's in this video, I think we've ultimately gained from the absence of the basic attack. I feel it adds more micro-management to the game, encourages the use of items, and the extra options you have (leader-switching and pushing) make it a total non-issue.
If there was something I'd want to change, Firstly, It would be the amount of repeated dialogue like either dialogue that the MC thought then the characters say those same things as a question or the amount of times your partner says "Are we really in the future" YES YOU LITERALLY SAID THAT IN OTHER CUTSCENES AND 3 TIMES IN ONE WHICH WAS THE FIRST SO YOU ALREADY KNOW! Sorry their just so annoying in that section of the game. Secondly, the dialogue trees lead to options that are either the same or just loop back. Rescue Team had some different dialogue that, while still leading to the same conclusion, was genuinely funny and had your partner get mad at you for lying about being able to fly. To be honest, the only funny piece of dialogue came from Chimecho which made fun of this system not having an actual choice (while also being disturbingly similar to Flower breaking the 4th wall. Thirdly, the amount of flashback sequences is terrifyingly large compared to other games.
@@pmdmakesmecri2
Oh yeah, if I didn't know any better, I'd think that game was made for goldfish. ;)
The worst was probably two minutes after the "sacrifice". They thought it was a good idea to watch half of that again, without the powerful music that accompanied it x)
I thought some bossfights were a bit ridiculous too, but since the first remake decided to have orbs not becoming completely useless in boss rooms, that might turn out fine.
@@skiller5034 Thing the regular attack is used in some cutscenes. If its not brought back for a remake those scenes could look odd.
Funny thing about Aegis cave.... I just remember looping over and over again being confused. trying the stone every time and it eventually worked. I didn't even figure out the puzzle. I just kept going thinking the game would give in to my demands eventually.
The worst part about Aegis cave isn't even that the entire alphabet is available. it's the fact that 2-3 types of Unown appear per floor. And since the dungeon is only 3 floors, it is very easy to spend up to HALF AN HOUR just trying to find the right letter, only for that Unown to not drop its stone.
When I played this game, I too got a Totodile as myself and a Fire-type partner. What a coincidence!
That battle against Regigigas can easily be chessed if one pokemon in your team has agility, the fight becomes really onesided.
I just brought an Ampharos along with me that had Charge and Discharge linked together and watched as all the Hitmonlee and Bronzong dropped like flies. I was a Riolu, so I had the type advantage against Regigigas, and I was able to hit him with Focus Blast from afar.
That's like, all bosses lol
@@timesez3895 I know, but it goes even beyond with Team Charm's aid.
yes indeed, my Agility Staraptor was incredible there, would be even more broken if i knew about the wonders of Discharge at the time (MC was a Shinx with Charge).
one-room moves break the boss fights even harder tbh, just attack every single enemy every time with it and they will drop quickly without much resistance
If they ever remake Explorers, like they did with Rescue Team, this is the one part of the game that could really use fixing. Either remove the need to defeat Unowns to get the stones or at the very least make the drop rate much higher, or even a guaranteed drop.
this dungeon was an absolute nightmare for me as a kid thank you for acknowledging it
Definitely the worst dungeon in the entire game. I don't think I've ever actually recruited the Regis because I'd rather not go through this torture again.
I'm doing a replay of Explorers of Darkness until I came to this point in the post-game. Every time I do this mission, I ask myself, "Is this worth getting Manaphy back?"
I like how the regis are supposed to be the legendary guardians of the treasure, yet when I was doing my playthrough, the most damage one did to me was 8.
This is why you gather those stones and hoard them in Kangaskhan Storage like some kinda dragon, so you don't have to go through this EVERY TIME you try Aegis Cave.
Aegis cave is named such, because it would take you *Ages* to complete it
MARCH TO DEATH PTSD INTENSIFIES.
Luck-based missions are probably up there with Kaizo Traps as some of the worst game design choices out there in my eyes. Also I fully agree with what you said about a win-streak system not being compatible with Pokemon games and RNG-filled games in general.

"Haha, speedrun goes brrrr"

My therapist: aegis cave isnt real, it cant hurt you
Aegis cave:
12:04 "I don't know what else to say, I'd just be repeating myself at this point."
You could talk about how boring and repetitive the music is.
"Fire Emblem wouldn't be as fun without the evasion mechanics" If only Fire Emblem Heroes understood that...
14:50 That Gigas faceplant is gold
I remember thinking Chatot was relevant since this was my first Pokemon game
Gonna be honest, I hate the "critical hits" mechanics in any game. Critical hits either come in the worst situations when i do them or almost never do when I need them. And then there the times when an enemy uses them and screw me over.
Dang I thought this was gonna be about special episode 4. Glad it is not because Aegis cave sucks
And just for fun, you have to do the dungeon again to recruit Regigigas...
I think the perfect manifestation on how wild this dungeon is is this experience that happened to me;
I was in a room with four unknowns, all of which are the letters i need (R, two Os, and K) so me [A Shinx] used Discharged and one-shot them all
Nothing dropped.
Both those places and RNG stuff reminds me of Tail hunting at FFIV-2 and Labyrinth of Time at FFI...
Very traumatic
Dang, this video is reminding me of the sawtooth stag mission back in Yo-Kai Watch. It took so many tries to find and catch it.
so you mean it took you aegis to complete that cave?
If I remember right, they also lock you out of certain Guild facilities (like the Diglett thing) until you finish the dungeon. So even preparation for this slog is a pain and a half.
What if they made a new game that includes the new Regis?
That be cool I'm a big regi fan
I wanted to say something about this cave, but sadly I didn't find the "F", "U", "C" and "K" stones yet.
i hate, hate, HATE aegis cave, i was legit there for hours due to bad luck
When I got to Aegis Cave, I easily got through Ice. I was stuck in Rock, however, for a freaking hour, with all the letters to Steel and all the letters to Rock except the O. When I finally found an O-shaped Unown, IT DIDN'T DROP AN UNOWN STONE.
Then I was stuck for 15 more minutes before I got one, mopped the floor with Regirock, and didn't bother going into Steel since I already had all the letters.
I think the music is the only thing that kept me going through it. God bless the Mystery Dungeon soundtrack.
Now there's "Dragon", with *six* stones...
You think that's bad ?
*E L E C T R I C* , 8 stones

Tip for this cave
Have 4 pokemon over level 35 with plenty of PP
Set 3 of them on "wander off" tactic
Check out the available unown in the floor, only 3 will apear each floor, if one you need appears, stall until you or your teammates kill one with the stone
Me: (see two of my favorite Pokemon on the thumbnail next to the words "Worst Level" "Should I be worry by this?
Funny thing is, when I first started playing EotS, I had no idea Aegis cave was gonna be so hard. I remember doing SO much grinding for it just cause I felt I was under leveled.
I have an idea for creepy bad endings
Kirby star allies: heroes in another dimension
It seems friendly, right?
No.
Here’s why.
The bad ending is basically when don’t get enough friend hearts, you go through 4 dimensions with pain-in-the-ass bosses, there are 30 friend hearts in each dimension, some are in plain sight, some are hard to get, and some are just very hard to find without using the internet. Once you reach the final bosses, corrupt Hyness and the parallel mage sisters, it’s going to be hell. (That theme bops though.) if you don’t collect at least 100 friend hearts, you basically get something quite depressing. Nothing happens, they’re dead. During this cutscene, you can hear that low pitch tone like the one from the Kirby 64 bad ending. What is it trying to tell you? You didn’t save anyone, you killed your only hope to stopping Morpho Knight, which is a very large threat, you only damaged fabric and reality itself, you didn’t do anything right, darkness is still out there. And another thing that makes this depressing is the mages pause screens for their parallel fight in soul melter EX, Francisca nearly died in a blizzard, was saved by Hyness. Flamberge nearly died in a fire, saved by Hyness. Zan Partizanne tried climbing a tower just to get struck by lightning (people think this is suicide but it’s not known.) and Hyness saved them. They were forced by their own will to get the Jamba hearts and summon Void Termina. Hell, in Hyness’s unhooded normal fight, YOU CAN HEAR THEIR SCREAMS DISTORTED AND CRYING IN PAIN WITH THE LIFE FORCE SUCKED OUT OF THEM. Also, if you see Corrupt Hyness’s pause screen, he was never like this, ever. He actually cared for the mage sisters. “Zan, if I lose my mind again... no, never mind.” It’s honestly sad seeing YOU killed them.
How can we fix this though to get a happy ending?
Simple, you need at least 100 friend hearts to get this good ending. It doesn’t matter which, it’s not complicated really, just a bit hard, some also need fast timing. Once you collect 100, you can finally go and rematch them again, after that painful fight, you’re offered a giant friend heart to throw at them. This later purifies them, and returns them back to normal. They thank Kirby for saving them, and return back home. And as you can see as well, Hyness is also back to normal, and this might be the most cutest Kirby ending yet, THAT IMAGE AFTER THE CREDITS IS SOOO CUTEEEEEEE! And now you get to play as the mage sisters! Once that’s finished, you can use guest star with them to finish the real threat, Morpho knight EX. After that’s over, it’s finally finished. You saved the lost souls and you destroyed an awful threat.
You know what would have made aeigis cave a bit less bad?
If they made the unown letters you specifically need spawn a lot more commonly.
Say what you will about Unown
