    Episode 15 of Boss Analysis.
In episode 10, I covered a number of pathetically easy final bosses, but this episode's theme is the total opposite: difficult first bosses!
Normally, you expect to stomp on the first boss without much effort, but not every first boss is that easy; in fact, if this is your first playthrough of the game, this boss might give you more trouble than anything else!
Featured in this video are the most notable difficult first bosses I've encountered in my adventures with video games, although I'm sure there are many others I either forgot about or are from games I've yet to play.

That first fight with Ghirahim will forever be the Number 1 in "Unexpectedly difficult first bosses" for me, and is pretty much what solified the vibe that I was getting that Skyward Sword wasn't gonna be like other Zelda games. Oh, how glad I was to be proven right.

When I was at minute 18:00, with the Kraken, I suddenly felt like I wanted to play pokemon, the first or second gen, and catch a tyranitar; then suddenly the pokemon theme sounds with a footage from the first gen. LOL!

I generally get a Butterfree going regardless of what pokemon I start the game with, just so I will have access to sleep powder which in turn makes catching an Abra FAR LESS RAGE INDUCING when reaching its first spawn location.

Congrats on 1000 videos, whoisthisgit. Recently I've been replaying an old game from my childhood, Bakugan Battle Brawlers for the DS. It was NOT hard at all, then I encountered the challenge that made me want to just throw the cartridge out the window. Your goal is simply to defeat the main antagonist, Marduk, in a battle without losing one simple touchscreen minigame. If you haven't mastered EVERY touchscreen minigame, you WILL fail. So, why am I telling you all this? Because I have a challenge for you... a very stupid challenge. Progress through the game until you beat the final tournament. Then go to the Park and look for Marduk's icon with a little yellow exclamation point in the top right corner. Beat the mission and wait for the exclamation point to appear again. You must beat the mission he gives you with only three level one Serpenoid Bakugan, the weakest in the entire game. Beat this challenge if you want, but it is NOT going to be easy. (Well, I don't know that for sure, I might just suck at the game, lol)

There a few from games I have played that could fit this idea:
The first is Narmer from Etrian Odyssey 3 not only has an attack that can possibly one shot your entire party if you get it wrong, but when he loses half of his health he will run away, and you have to chase him, but every step he heals himself and there are still enemies in the way.
The next is Aztec Falcon from Megaman Zero, who isn't technically the first boss but I don't think the Golem really counts. The boss is hard not only due to not having the elements yet, but also because you are on a time limit and while his pattern isnt' impossible, trying to learn it while not dying still getting hits in is difficult. And if you don't have the Charge slash (which unless you grind, you won't) you will be doing only a little bit of damage to him.
Third is the Wendigo from Devil Survivor. Since this is a Strategic RPG and is an SMT game it is no surprise this game is hard. However even when compared to the rest of SMT the Wendigo is a pretty nasty first boss, who is not only brutally strong for this point in the game also has a horde of other demons who can easily cause you trouble. This fight doesn't really have annoying gimmicks or tactics... its is just straight up brutal.
Finally Skelter Helter from No More Heroes 2. On the normal difficulty this guy isn't bad at all, a bit tougher than most first bosses but that's fine, No More Heroes isn't an easy series to begin with. But on the harder difficulties... prepare to hate him and his gun. The bullets don't do massive damage, but they will stun you and he will use that to then rush you and carve up your health with his lightsaber buster sword.

Well, in 1.3 I find it easier to kill thanks to the yoyo (and if you are lucky enough the traveling merchant sells Code 1, which deals 21 dmg per hit) but it's a boss you can summon anytime you want, so you can easily get a lot of life crystals and a proper bow to face it (I know it can spawn automatically, but only if you have 10+ armor and 200 life, so it shouldn't be that hard to kill)

Actually if you play around too much around Ghirahim in his 1st phase he'll swipe at you. Also I find it easier (and funnier) to run away from him when he starts his running slash and all you have to do to get out of his fingers is flick upward (which makes surprising sense).
He's pretty notable due to him having so many mechanics to his fight for the first battle, you never expect it. (for ex. skyward strikes to stun him give you more hits.)
This was a video of good memories like when I never beat underground zone before losing my gamegear yet still that theme haunted me. I think Roark and Cheren were also surprisingly tough pokemon first bosses.

You said that HG/SS's Falkner was hard, and you used Chikorita.
That reminds me of when I first fought Falkner. My Chikorita fainted, and it was the last Pokémon in my party. But before it fainted, it was able to poison the Pidgeotto. On the SAME EXACT TURN that the Chikorita fainted, the Pidgeotto fainted from poison.
The game counted it as a victory.

Hmmmm... just a note from the Kraken from Shining Force 2: if you kill enough of his legs and arms, the head closes in the raft, making it significantly easier to surround and kill.
Also, those damn arms have spear range and better stats, making them tougher than legs.

As such I compiled an easy way to beat the Skyview Temple main boss if you are going for a shieldless run which is what I did because the shields in this game outside the hidden unlockable one are faulty and end up breaking. For the first form you want to treat him like he was one of those Eye Guardians you encountered throughout the temple. When you lightly swing your sword around he watches it and eventually drops his guard giving you an opening to attack opposite of where his hand is. If your sword gets caught pull it away to prevent it from being taken. If he does grab it simply run around and dodge it as he throws it at you and pick it up to reclaim it. For the second form he gets more offensive. When he goes "Aaaauugh!" immediately stop targeting him and hold down the A button and run. Do not try and side jump out of the way of the charge while targeting as you will usually get hit. For his little dark magic infused knives he throws simply swing in the direction they are arranged in to hit them back at him. This does not do as much damage as your sword but every little bit helps. Lastly for his close range attack you have a split second to attack opposite of where his sword is. If you do not think you can make the strike don't risk it. Back flip out of the way to avoid getting hit. You have to be real quick to do this however if you do succeed in countering this you will have an opportunity to do some serious damage by swinging your sword back and forth as his guard drops completely. Lastly don't be afraid to bring a few Heart Potions into the fight. Skyward Sword's bosses can be tricky at times so it's always good to come prepared for the battles in advance. Regardless this first boss can take a good while. He can absorb a lot of hits before going down but once you do defeat him give yourself a pat on the back. You beat one of the hardest bosses in the game.

  • @janusan89

Speaking of first hard bosses, I have always one in mind but I don't know if it was talked about in this series, and that is Grilgan from Lost Odyssey.
He's the very first true boss you fight and for a first boss that's insanely difficult: you're only about level 15 or close to it, have 3 characters with more or less 500 hp and the boss has only one true weakness: fire magic. Physical ones did nearly to nothing and he had an incredible amount of hp (about 1600), so your magic was the only thing that could beat it.
In theory the boss is simple, but his attacks are nasty and, in my run, he would constantly hit the back row and kill my mage, essentially giving me a game over.

I used to laugh at people who thought the first boss of 8-Bit Sonic 2 was hard, because I was well used to the Master System version and almost everybody I talked to at the time only ever apparently played it on Game Gear. Which I didn't get either, because hey, the Game Gear has a converter that can be used to play Master System games, so how much worse could it be, really?
So yeah, until I played that particular version myself, I never got what all the fuss was about. But man, when I did... that thing was pretty evil.

whoisthisgit My personal recommendation for your review: Murai from Ninja Gaiden Black. This guy is by far and away the best example I know of a Noobstomper first boss.
First off, let's start off by noting that when you get to him you can have only one of two weapons: The Dragon Sword or the Lunar Staff. Neither of those weapons will be allowed to have upgrades and you're missing some of your best combo moves which you unlock later in the game. Furthermore, you only have basic Shurikens as projectiles, which are usually on the bad side anyway, but the dude is straight up immune to them and will block them 100% of the time. Also, your health by this point is really low and you'll have access to maybe two or three healing items. You can see where this is going.
The Ninja Gaiden games (at least the amazing first and the passable second) are known for tight combat and insane difficulty. In a game where you fight legions of demons, full on tanks and choppers, fire and lightning breathing worms, and a certified God, this buff dude with nunchucks is one of the deadliest around!
He will block almost all attacks that are just kinda thrown out. If you blindly jump at him a single swat will leave you reeling on the floor. His dash attack hurts like hell and is one of the only moments when his guard is down. He will lightly jump back and avoid air-to-ground attacks like they were nothing. If you don't know what you're doing he will destroy you over and over again. And God save you if you attempt this on Ninja Master difficulty, where he's substantially more aggressive AND his window of vulnerability is much smaller.
If you can get your hands on a copy of Gaiden Black, give it a shot. It's an amazing action game and he's one of the best boss fights I've seen in terms of organically teaching the player how to not be an idiot.

Honestly, I have better luck getting a Nidoran to Double Kick before getting a Butterfree to 12, leveling past Metapod is such a pain in the ass.
Also.. *seriously*, Sonic 2 on the Game Gear must have been some kind of sick joke, what a difficult and annoying first Robotnik fight - I spent hours on it, and only a few times ever got to see past that level. Getting a Game Over typically meant shelving the game gear for some weeks because I didn't want to go through it again.
    Great video as always.

Phantom and Cerberus from Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 3 are notorious first hard bosses. Both basically are there to have you unlock easy mode, and the problem with Cerberus was that they mislabeled difficulties in the original Devil May Cry 3 so that normal was the Japanese hard.

I remember Sonic 2 GameGear and having trouble to defeat the first boss back in the 90's. But I found the handgliding levels the most annoying.
Finding the Chaos Emeralds that are hidden the throughout the levels without a guide (especially without video guide) is the hardest bit of Sonic 2 GameGear.
You also had no savestates that we take for granted nowadays back then on the GameGear. So if your console lost power you would have to start from the beginning of the game.
Without all the Chaos Emearlds you get the bad ending when you defeat Metal Sonic.

T-H-O-U-G-H! He can mow down your health in a blink of eye and attacking him head on is a death wish, worsened by the fact that that's how practically every non boss enemy is fought.

Brock can potentially be hard for Charmander players even in the remakes. Yes, Charmander learns Metal Claw now, but unlike the original games, Brock's Pokemon now know a Rock attack. Not just a Rock attack either, but one which drops your Speed every time it hits. Cheesing through with Charmander's Ember or Butterfree's Confusion is now much less viable since they could potentially die in one hit, and even if they don't, they're now slower and will probably get hammered again immediately.
Thankfully, Mankey is available in both Fire Red and Leaf Green on the route west of Viridian, and he still learns Low Kick, which now does weight-based damage. You at least have an out now. However, I don't think Charmander has it too much easier in the remakes than he does in the originals. (Though with Steel-type Magnemites, at least Fire isn't a worthless type in the remakes. It has SOME purpose.)

    ruclips.net/video/JoNWnkfGY0U/видео.html
I actually keep the guy at mid-range so that I can hit Ghirahim when he starts up the dash attack, but even if my Squishy Wizard ass gets to me, I can still slash him just as he gets close to me. It's a nice and handy way of dealing damage to him.
Spoiled Rotten - I know a friend who would be VERY impressed with this.
Marionette - 1HKing THREE people. Fuck that noise.
Kraken - the game is merciless when you have overleveled people. Guh.
Brock - maybe I should see how he and Misty can be handled with starter Charmander without overleveling one of these days. I have a gut feeling Growl will be useful to nuke Brock's attack into the ground.
HGSS Falkner - wow, healing half your HP in one turn with a 'Mon's move when a supereffective attack doesn't do that much damage. What.
Antlion - yeah, Fuck. This. Guy. And apparently I was bad at games. Turns out games and their cultists want to be sadists. Thankfully there are people like you, WITG, who would be empathetic.

Much to say after watching this video.
Link's Awakening 1st boss: Screw that boss! 1 heart per hit?!?
Pokemon 1 gen: Depending on your style of gameplay, yellow or blue/red will be harder. If you focus on brute strength, then yellow is easier, or if you are going for the stat-decreasing stalling method first, then blue/red is easier because Geodude's lvl is high enough to randomly use defense curl, thus buy you some time, while in yellow, he only learns tackle, so good luck trying to take those hits while decreasing his stat.
Also, Charmander's metal claw in the gen 1 remake didn't help me much as Onyx is too defensive to be taken out by 1 hit and Charmander can't take a single Rock Tomb.
Pokemon gen 2: I still remember Falkaner flooring my rock pokemon with Mud-slap, and given how inaccurate rock-throw was, I had to ditched rock pokemon in later playthroughs.
And the last one, I hate that boss so much. Probably my first horrific experience with screen crunch.

I remember trying to beat Brock in Pokemon Yellow with a lv. 12 Pikachu, and 5 level 3-4 Pokemon. How innocent I was.
Also, what really annoyed me in that game is the level gap you get at some point: Erika's Pokemon were around level 30, but then, you get to Koga, and he starts with a F-ing level 44 Venonat (and also 2 more at levels 46 and 48, and a level 50 Venomoth). What was Game Freak thinking when they made that?

    • @TheLomdr
      @TheLomdr 9 лет назад +2

+Javi Cebolla Granted, in regards to Brock, if you're coming from the Anime, the anime straight up lies to you that you can beat a ground type by making it wet, which isn't even a condition to this very day. There is Water Sport, but that only weakens the power of Fire Type moves and Rainy Day only boosts the power of water attacks.

If you dont know what your doing, Miror B from Pokemon Colosseum can be a complete pain in the dick, his team consists of 4 Ludicolos and the Shadow Sudowoodo, and his team using a Rain Strategy means he has all his bases covered, 2 Ludicolos have Rain Dish for its ability meaning they restore 1/8 of there max HP every turn in the Rain, and the other 2 have Swift Swim, which doubles there Speed in the Rain, and the only Super Effective moves you have for them by that point due to how Shadow Pokemon work are Noctowls Fly, Quilfishes Poison Sting, and Swablus Fly, Fly being a 2 turn attack with 95 accuracy, and Poison Sting having 35 power, which is absolute shit, and if you have a Shadow Pokemon use Shadow Rush, they have a chance to waste a turn going into Hyper Mode, in which if ordered to use any move not named Shadow Rush, they can do several things such as: Using another move, usually Shadow Rush, attack your other Pokemon, attack you or the other Trainer (both of which waste a turn), not do anything, hurt themselves like they were Confused, or very rarely, actually do what you wanted them to do, and you cant use items on them, and it takes a turn to get them out of Hyper Mode, and Miror Bs Ludicolos arnt Shadow Pokemon so they dont have that disadvantage, and the Shadow Sudowoodo dosnt have those issuses at all when it gets on the field! But the real dick kick is trying to Snag Sudowoodo, as thats how you get Pokemon in Colosseum, stealing them in the middle of a battle like there a Wild Pokemon, and Shadow Rush deals recoil damage! You also cant over level your Pokemon, since the only non Shadow Pokemon you have by then are Umbreon and Espeon, and Shadow Pokemon dont gain EXP until there purified, which you cant do yet. Thankfully, by the time you fight Dakim, you can level up your Pokemon, but by then the first immpressions are kind of wrecked, and your not likely to keep playing. If you do know what your doing however, hes a piece of cake, just like every other boss

Fire Emblem usually has pretty balanced first bosses... except Thracia 776.
The boss is an armor knight. Now, that aint anything special, but he's standing on a gate and gates provide +10 defence in that game, so the boss usually has around 20 defence.
20 defence is crazy enough in the Fire Emblem series (especially in Thracia 776, where stats usually cap at 20), but on the first boss it's absolutely ridiculous. The only way you can damage him without wasting exp on prepromotes is through critical hits and the light brand.

Juliusi Defares The more I hear about Fire Emblem 5, the less I want to play it.
As for a difficult first boss from a Fire Emblem game I have played, I would have included the first boss from Awakening, if I could have recorded 3DS games. (I'm not talking about Vaildar, that chapter doesn't count) The first time I played the game, I actually got Game Over when the boss got a critical and killed Chrom. That boss' critical rate, although small, always makes me worry.

    • @danielostrowski856
      @danielostrowski856 9 лет назад

Juliusi Defares thing is with that is that as you said, prepromotes are an option. If it's ridiculously difficult to beat it with anyone else, but the fact remains that Eyvel is an option, so I'm not sure if it could be considered a super hard boss.
However, I've never played Thracia, and in fact only found a playthrough on youtube to watch just yesterday. so there's that

I have to say that in fire red and leaf green that brock battle is a lot harder, cause his pokemons have Rock tomb instead of that weak ass Bide.
I remember brock and misty being really hard back in day when I was 10y old and ofc chose charmander (red players choose charmander and nobody takes bulbasaur xD).
But I got my ass handed to me with lvl 14 charmander couple of years ago when I was playing FR with emulator (me being +20y old), cause that a-hole brock kept spamming rock tomb and 3 shotted my char. I had to go grind him to charmeleon in viridian forest, which I had to never do in original red/blue.
In FR/LG you pretty much have to catch mankey/nidoran if you wanna progress without grinding or get extemely lucky with Brocks AI (sometimes he doesnt start instantly spamming rock tomb vs charmander).
