The hull is the same hull as the STRV m-42, which was designed for a max of 22 tons (which it ended up breaking a bit) and a very narrow width to match the railroad gauges. When they realized that the original gun wasn't effective anymore (was just under the Sherman's 75mm in effectiveness, and came out a couple years after it), they realized they needed to upgrade it. They made a thin, large turret that could house the upgraded 75mm Bofors, and kept it the same width as the railroad gauges still hadn't changed, and this also kept its maneuverability in mountains a bit higher. And made it ridiculously tall in comparison. Source: Inside the Chieftain's Hatch, STRV 74.
The reason iirc was for transport, Sweden when the strv 42 was made had a pretty thin road system I think and the vehicle needed to be thin. They had an issue then when they didn't have a new tank in the 60s and the Soviets had t60 and stuff so they quickly retrofitted a turret for their old ww2 hulls that had a longer and better cannon.

"It likes snow more then Japan open terrain" - Well, it is a Swedish tank, i am pretty sure it was developed to cross snowy terrain, or it would be useless half of the year in most of Sweden..
Strv 74 have the same hull as the Strv M/42 but with new turret. Reason for it being that thin is that the Swedish Road Administration (civilian agency that handle infrastructure) said that any vehicle wider then this was illegal and that include military. :P
Stridsvagn 74 (strv 74) was a Swedish tank in use with the Swedish Army from 1958 to 1984. It was a modification of the older Stridsvagn m/42, which was phased out of service in the early 1950s. Instead of scrapping the vehicles altogether, the chassis were used to build a new tank which could be used as a supplement to the newly bought stridsvagn 81. The turret of the strv 74 was completely new, with a 75 mm high-velocity gun based on an old anti-aircraft gun, engines and transmission were modified or changed from the strv m/42, broader tracks and a separate electrical motor for the turret rotation was introduced while retaining the manual control as a backup.

Also, the new NATO 105/120mm sound it just a slightly altered copy of the Half-Life 2 magnum sound with reverb. I guess Gaijin is stealing assets from Valve now.

This tank chassis is a World War 2 design. It was updated with a new turret and other features in 1958. Crews apparently didn't like it too much and named it "Senseless"..
The 74 was a strange old beast, basically the WWII vintage Strv-m/42 chassis, which was up-gunned (hence the very oversized turret to make space for the modified Bofors 75mm AA gun) post war and modernised to make up for the shortfall of a cancelled AMX-13 light tank order, until it could be replaced by the S-Tank (Strv-103). So the chassis itself basically served from WII until the mid 80's!!!!

Funny video. Btw, it wasn't designed like that on purpose, Sweden built a lot of tanks of the M42 variant and after the war they we left with them just sitting around. This is one of the plenty attempts at modernizing them by up-gunning them.
You know what happened with this tank? They took an older hull from the WWII and replaced the original turret with a short 75 mm gun with a high-powered long 75 mm that needed more space.
