The US is banning Nvidia chips to China, especially to DeepSeek. So DeepSeek is cooked? Worry not, they are migrating to Huawei's Ascend chips, which reportedly is 5% lower in efficiency compared with Invidia chips but 70% cheaper than them. Go figure, what this will play out.
I don't know why I'm surprised that Americans can't conceive that there are many intelligent and determined engineers in China, and that China's mixed-economy can actually lead to innovation. Silly me for not having my eyes open.
The setback with NVIDIA’S over deepseek gave the market pause, and many of the speculators abandoned the stock. in the long term, i imagine semiconductor manufacturers' stocks will not just recover, but boom, as small- and medium-size businesses implement deepseek. and not just some of them (nvda, tsmc, etc) but *all* of them (amd, arm, intl, avgo, etc)... and energy providers (ceg, etc) i see as "safe" plays; power demand will only ever go up... so, in general, deepseek represents a wide dispersal of previously heavily-concentrated resources... which i see as a good thing
Are we certain of the cost? We still ship chips to Singapore so it's not impossible for China to get their hands on Nvidia's Blackwell chips and use them for the foundational work. After the heavy lifting is done then use the "cheaper" chips. Am I wrong? I think we over reacted. Clearly this was China taking a shot at the US AI development model.
It feels like the market was looking for a course correction and found it. As Scott said its not actually that much on the year. There will be another market correction if trump applies tariffs. The crypto BS is also correcting. Gonna be a turbulent year me thinks. Markets lurve stability and trump is not that.
I am not a data scientist, and I think this technology appears to be the start of a culturally biased contest between low-cost, freely available, or closed and expensive.
Perspective is Key: your statement of "low cost to train a foundation model" is not associated with Deepseek as Deepseek used Llama 3.2, and simply provided a layer above the foundation model which was Llama 3.2 and used smoke and mirrors to portray reasoning above the foundation LLM which did have some interesting concepts but nothing more advanced than what is occurring within US research in universities or labs in the US and Canada. Perspective is key.

For once i find Scott take to be shallow and flippant. It's not just Walmart and Tiffany, jewellery doesn't evolve and certainly not at an exponential speed
It's not the first time for many observers. Scott is a brilliant and ethical guy, but he has a very weird and irrational Cold War mindset when it comes to China preventing him from thinking objectively about the scientific, technical, and financial strengths of modern China. However, I don't blame him: not only do most people have a blindspot or two, but highly interested factions have succeeded in clouding the minds of otherwise intelligent and reasonable people.
It is really simple to understand why Chinese AI is a lot cheaper, and more effective, at least, in the Chinese language domain. Chinese researchers and engineers focus on model and logic backed up by vast amounts of data collected by many big companies like Tencent. Alibaba, Xiaomi, etc, while the U.S. counterparts rely heavily on chips capacity and capabilities for computing. There is far more human intelligence involved in Deep Seek than ChatGTP. Human intelligence is lot cheaper and efficient and effective than hardware. The Western media pretend not to understand this simple fact because they don’t know how to compete with China and they don’t know how to deal with the consequences in the human intelligence domain. Cooperation with China is the only viable option for the U.S., so that the U.S. knows a lot more about what China is doing, and vice versa, for a better world.
If Yann LeCun truly said that this is cheap and dirtly version, I start losing respect to his opinion. I've read Deepseek papers, these are very good papers. Granted that LeCun has always been very skeptical on the reinforced learning to begin with so it is very difficult for him to accept that it works way better he though it ever could, I am sure Meta research teams are feeling like sh*t and working 24 / 7 trying to figure out how they can first do what Deepseek did and then, maybe, do better. Also I bought Nvidia when it "crashed". There is nothing wrong with their chips.
In addition to AOC speaking plainly, clearly, and forcefully, I would add David Hogg to that very short list. And, he's put his hat in the ring with the Democratic National Committee and running for vice-chair. If he's not elected..... well, I don't know what to say.
I love this whole story. The Silly Valley boys were caught sleeping and got their clocks cleaned. Period. And 2 more Chinese models were released from different companies, also Free! Each outperforming the other. How did they do it, BETTER CODE!!!! American Ai is not even in the race anymore. The Game is basically over. A lot of these guys are not as good as they think they are in the US. They are only really "good" against each other, this is a stark reminder of that fact. They should really reflect on this... and maybe they can try to catch up. But im not betting on it.
Deepseek brought the whole US IA to a crossroad as high captal assumptions are crushed and stock exchange corrections may morph in a rush and rout to the energy sector leading to a fascinating recession. recession crushing the actual belligerant US government, forced, gasps, to work on aliviating social issues like hunger, jobs and welfare assistance. The suppresion of all US tariffs is also to be contemplated in thsi new paradigm.
Deepseek's been there for sometime, its just their recent R1 model thats causing the consternation. It used just 5% of money what OpenAI spent on similar models. There is something seriously wrong about how Sam Altman and team is approaching AI. Either he is too greedy or he doesnt know how to build AI more efficiently.
I don't understand what the fuss is all about. China just engaged with distributed AI. This is something American corporations can do too, they just chose a more muscular and proprietary approach. This sudden lack of confidence in the American people/investors is indicative of our uncertainty of the course headed by the current administration. "All hands on deck!" Look, our technological advantage is still dominant. Just because we can afford to take the competitive/redundant approach doesn't necessitate that we fail. We will continue to use the best chips available from Nvidia, we will continue to overspend on research but rest assured we will incorporate the techniques presented by China and use them as an augmentation of our current path.
Thats a very short sighted view given this llm systems are still not great and potential to get bigger . What happened was good to reduce the costs and open the ceiling for bigger models. Also this small language models cant compete with the very large ones . I think you will se both worlds, factory sized computation centers for complex stuff and distilled models for local use. Its a bit exhausting listening to people who dont know anything about llm models talking about risks
Deepseek is impressive but there's nothing all that ground breaking. I think all this really tells you is when reinforcement learning is scaled up on these models, we're probably on a time line to AGI in the next couple years. However that's exactly what the heads of these companies have been saying. So not sure what is so shocking.
Maybe everyone should chill until they know what it can really do. Btw, as big as the big tech bros are, I would not trust anything of the kind coming out of china.

Elon and other oligarchs stole $$$ hundreds of billions of dollars -- via an unprofitable company -- by duping gullible people.
I'd buy that for a dollar!
Could this become a community response to efforts by the Broligarchy to monopolize and concentrate AI within a closed system?
No. You'll never be able to get the money to pay for the infrastructure
Absolutely love your "Brolarchy".

I’ve been waiting to hear your thoughts on DeepSeek. Thanks for this episode!!
China has always had a minimalist view when it comes to efficiency. You could say they set the standard for 6 sigma. So for Chinese tech to develop a cheaper more efficient AI is pretty understandable. I'd say they are head and shoulders above the US in tech industry development. I wouldn't be surprised if they win the quantum computer race and intergrate their AI. Game over at that point. We should join the relay instead of trying to outrun them. But then again I'm not really a tech insider.
America elected Trump as their leader. Yea. They are not going to win this race lol.
No it’s not understandable. They had their hands tied and legs cut and tied down and they still did it .
@kojoefante I'm not sure what you mean. China spent 800 billion dollars on tech infrastructure last year. That doesn't sound like arms and legs being amputated and tied down. That's sounds like putting your money where your mouth is.
@kojoefante China spent 800 billion on tech infrastructure. Is that amputating arms and legs? No, that's putting your money where your mouth is.
there was a time when i kept wondering why some people seemed to naturally draw others in while i was just…there. no matter what i tried, i couldn’t figure out how they did it. then someone mentioned the book Vibrations of Manifestation by Alex Lane, and i decided to check it out. the way it explains how your aura affects everything around you? it blew me away. it’s like having a secret code to unlock your magnetic energy. this book is a game-changer.

Gary Marcus's predictions have been spot-on over the last three years. Calling him a crank is a bit dismissive, Kara.
100%. Gary is on the few people out there who is examining the reality and not the hype. We need to listen to more independent scientists and not the CEOs.

LLM is already well understood. tiny countries also have their own llm now , even mine. Even if meta didnt open source their model it wont change much.
:30 “The markets are not reacting well to Deep Seek”
Au contraire, I think it is reacting very well, knocking down those overvalued protectionist behemoths.
I dont wana oversimplify, but the core texhnology in invia snd other chips, goes back to vector computer from seymour cray from the 60s, VLIW from Fisher of the 70s and Flynn SIMD and MIMD. Those ideas, implemented with the current transistor technologies, are basically parallel vector algebra computers.
Whoa- in English? 😮
Keep in mind Deepseek was trained cheaper BUT that's not from zero. It was built upon previous work. People panicking are NOT thinking things through.
It also used no safe guards from what I’ve read, so probably faster and cheaper but not really reasonable for US companies to implement (and dangerous if they do).
They are panicking because they can no longer sell themselves as the wizard of oz with the magical box that nobody can look inside of. OpenAI's business model to recoup all that investor $ is the charge $200/mth to use its "Best Of Class" product. How long's that runway if someone else offers a better product, OPEN SOURCE? It means OpenAI is nearly worthless at this point.
Does this spell the end of open source for LLM? Otherwise every Liam improvement filters down to smaller LAMP that train with it
Almost everything about AI is from people NOT thinking things through.
*YES its every clever and can do some amazing things, BUT ITS NOT the panacea for humanity that way too many people are pumping.*
I am an engineer (aerospace) and went to one of the greatest schools for computing (U. of Illinois) where people like Marc Andreessen and 2 of the 3 founders of RUclips went. Everybody going crazy about DeepSeek and Nvidia but I am just a chill guy who invests in Index ETFs.
Could you offer a solid resource for someone who is just starting out in the stock market that describes the various investing vehicles, such as "index ETFs"? I have 50k to invest, but I do not know anything yet.
Having an investment advisor is the best approach to the market especially for a newbie like you. I was going solo without much success until my husband introduced me to an advisor. I've achieved over 80% capital growth since Q3 last year, excluding dividends. So i will advise you get one as well.
Could you recommend who you work with? I really could use some help at this moment please.

Smart cheap better. Sounds like a good thing.
I lost over $300,000 investing in $GME and $BBBY last year, which was very depressing. Now, with low risk tolerance, I want to invest wisely this year. I’ve been researching index funds, ETFs, mutual funds, and growth stocks.I want a simple portfolio with about 3 holdings.
Sorry for your loss. Directionally this makes sense to buy; $SNAP, $PINS, $RDDT, $META, following tik tok ban these stocks should blow up.
A long-term approach can definitely help with navigating market volatility. Set Clear Goals, Focus on Quality Investments, Stay Patient and Avoid Emotional Reactions, and Work with a Financial Advisor
A lot of folks downplay the role of advlsors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.
This is definitely considerable! think you could suggest any professional/advisors i can get on the phone with? i'm in dire need of proper portfoIlo allocatio
There are a handful of CFAs out there. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I’ve stuck with Patricia Grace Barry for some years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive. She’s known in her field look her up.
As an investment enthusiast, I often wonder how top-level investors are able to become millionaires through investing. I have a significant amount of capital to start with, but I'm unsure about the strategies and direct I should take to help me generate substantial profits like some people are this season.
I’m not in a position to offer financial advice, but given the significant amount of capital you're working with, it would be wise to consult a financial advisor who can guide you in developing a strategy tailored to your goals and risk tolerance.
Factos!!. After experiencing a major portfolio loss in 2020 amid the COVID pandemic while trying to manage my investments on my own, I reached out to an investment advisor. They helped me turn my little investment into a seven-figure portfolio by providing the guidance and strategy I needed. Having that expertise made a significant difference in my investment journey.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve been managing my portfolio myself, but it’s not working out. Do you have any recommendations for a good investment advisor? I could really use some help.

Deepseek has been out for a few weeks. This delayed reaction is odd.
This was a nice solution for the ccp fixation on Taiwan having the semiconductor market.
Shares of AI-related hardware companies plunged on Monday, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM 5.25%), Marvell Technology (MRVL 3.54%), and Arista Networks (ANET 6.22%), which fell 14.4%, 18%, and 21.9%, respectively, as of 1:11 PM EDT.
Deepseek uses Nividia chips. It only proves Nividia chips are worth their weight. It will be interesting to see who profits big time from this claim,
The US is banning Nvidia chips to China, especially to DeepSeek.

But, NVIDIA fundamentals, especially the high demand for their products, are rock solid. I don't mind having to hold it for a while, but I'd also like to appreciate short-term opportunities to make additions to my $500K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas...
Safest approach i feel to go about it is to diversify investments. By spreading investments across different asset classes, like bonds, real estate, and international stocks, they can reduce the impact of a market meltdown. its important to seek the guidance of an expert
I agree, though some doubt financial advisors. Mine has delivered, growing my portfolio by over $1 million for the past decade through savvy diversification. Financial security is my goal, and I'm pleased with my results.
I'm intrigued by this. I've searched for financial advisors online but it's kind of hard to get in touch with one. Okay if I ask you for a recommendation?

Ai, like crypto, is a solution in search of a problem. It’s not part of a real economy so it can’t crash a real economy
Silly comparison. AI would help solve a lot of real world complex problems
in the long term, i imagine semiconductor manufacturers' stocks will not just recover, but boom, as small- and medium-size businesses implement deepseek. and not just some of them (nvda, tsmc, etc) but *all* of them (amd, arm, intl, avgo, etc)... and energy providers (ceg, etc) i see as "safe" plays; power demand will only ever go up... so, in general, deepseek represents a wide dispersal of previously heavily-concentrated resources... which i see as a good thing
where do we find the full video version of the podcast?
Are we certain of the cost? We still ship chips to Singapore so it's not impossible for China to get their hands on Nvidia's Blackwell chips and use them for the foundational work. After the heavy lifting is done then use the "cheaper" chips. Am I wrong? I think we over reacted. Clearly this was China taking a shot at the US AI development model.
You are wrong. Be responsible, and do not spread misinformation based on kneejerk nationalism and xenophobia
it's open source. this isn't a competitive play. this will generate even more demand. 16% drop is irrelevant historically
It feels like the market was looking for a course correction and found it. As Scott said its not actually that much on the year. There will be another market correction if trump applies tariffs. The crypto BS is also correcting. Gonna be a turbulent year me thinks. Markets lurve stability and trump is not that.
Us investors feel cheated by big tech. Their huge billion dollar AI budgets have been exposed.
I am not a data scientist, and I think this technology appears to be the start of a culturally biased contest between low-cost, freely available, or closed and expensive.
So in other words, the market could go up, or it could go down.

Every nation has to KNOW and LEARN to it's history. China with it's long history had a long journey of difficulties, so don't underestimate China
It's disappointing that they would cite LeCun as an "expert opinion" when he's one of the most conflicted, jealous, and fearful of Deepseek.

This is wonderful news!!!!😂 competition is super healthy. Open ai can’t charge whatever they want.
Arrogant openai wants to charge 200 a month.
Is it Walmart or Datsun?
If you believe that Deepseek really did this with only $6M and no H100 chips, you’re naive
This video aged like milk in July 😂
The #1 goal of american companies is to raise more money, not perfec their product or service. Its a ponzi scheme.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. China just engaged with distributed AI. This is something American corporations can do too, they just chose a more muscular and proprietary approach.
This sudden lack of confidence in the American people/investors is indicative of our uncertainty of the course headed by the current administration.
"All hands on deck!"
Look, our technological advantage is still dominant. Just because we can afford to take the competitive/redundant approach doesn't necessitate that we fail.
We will continue to use the best chips available from Nvidia, we will continue to overspend on research but rest assured we will incorporate the techniques presented by China and use them as an augmentation of our current path.
Your assumption is "expensive = better" without any evidence? Great logic...

It's crazy
Hype hype hype
Reasoning, why don't you go use it and find out for yourself..its miles ahead of the results chatgtp offers...no comparison.
