The last, and worst Tony Hawk game? Proving Ground review!

  • It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally reviewing Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, which is arguably the last game in the series, if you don't count spin-offs and budget games that came later. This is the latest game that actually had a serious big-budget release. And unfortunately... it's also the worst. Let's get it over with.

Briefly, I want to add that being able to GET OFF is a godsend so that I can easily get back to an area I wanna be without constantly having to pivot my board . You could do tricks back up, but when I need to go back directly behind me, I just wanna get there quick so I can do the actual skating combos again

My guy, the problem you're having with the photo challenge is that you have to manually go into your rigging menu, THEN get the camera THEN angle it, THEN trick it. The game never tells you, but that's how you do it

I thought it was easy. Though I didn't really like it. I get what they were trying to do but they did it wrong. To implement that you would have to make it a multiplayer mode and I don't think Proving Grounds would be the best game for that.

Being able to walk around didn't really take way from skating, it just made it more realistic. It also added a creative way to play. To be able to wall run then land on your board, running then trick onto the board, jumping off a high spot onto your board and so on. Ok fine, can't really get that much more creative, but a good addition nonetheless.

I didn't play Proving Ground until well after my original foray into the THPS series when I was a kid, and some time after I played through all the Skate games. I honestly think the game gets a real bum rap, it is considerably better than it has any right to be. It's really good, and really underrated. It's a shame public opinion hasn't softened on it.

  • @-AK-
    @-AK- 6 лет назад +143

Personally, I thought this game was great. There *must* have been something wrong with your disk because I've spent around 60 hours playing that game and have never had it crash once, I have experienced *ONE* glitch throughout my play through of the game however. One of the career goals counts your grind distance and adds to your score dependent on how far you've grinded, what happened instead is the game decided to not count it, but I just beat it by getting a high combo.
I almost forgot about the bowl skating part of the game, apart from Bam's stupid treasure hunt mission, those had to be the most annoying goals to complete. The bowl skating has to be the worst addition to a Tony Hawk game ever, the really could have done without it.
Now, when you mentioned that the game felt like it was made on a gears of war or maden engine, you're not entirely wrong. Both Project 8 and Proving Ground were made on the Havok engine, the engine that the Assassin's Creed, Guitar Hero, Half Life, etc. Were developed on, though I don't mind the way P8 and PG feel though, I think the physics were good.
NTT, NTG and NTM were all fine in my opinion. NTG gave you a shit ton of points and worked pretty well, and NTM worked just fine and was a good way to notch up the amount of points you'd get from a NTT combo. It's weird that you complained about this game having NTM because you complained about P8 not having NTM.
Can't say that PG has the most restrictive cas, P8, TH:R and Thps5 all had a much more restrictive cas mode, I thought PG's cas was just fine.
Now, the skill challenges. The markers point at the next marker, 'nuff said.
Anyway, I don't think this game is at all bad. It fixes a great deal of the issues P8 had and improved on it. The map may not be as great as some of the levels in previous Tony Hawk's, but I thought it was not too shabby and is pretty damn big too. Proving Ground is extremely underrated, if I had to throw a score at it, I'd give it a 76%.
    Legend for those who don't get the acronyms;
    [NTT] Nail The Trick
    [NTG] Nail The Grab
    [NTM] Nail The Manual
    [P8] Project 8
    [PG] Proving Ground
    [cas] Create a Skater

I think this game tried to do some new stuff that just gives you something to do. Also imo, the 'nail the' is the most creative you have ever been able to get in a skate game. Also...nail the stuff was super easy for me and other people to learn. And you can't do a double dolphin flip to manual without it which is nice. Also it's the best Tony hawk has ever looked which is just something I think we all deserved. Idk the animations looked nice, the controls felt nice. It's not breaking new ground. Also after talking crap on the carves etc...you made a great point about how it is actually is part of a classic Tony hawk trend to add an optional small level of realism. I've never had those glitches on Xbox, I think the PS3 ram issue maybe be the problem here like Skyrim and many other games.

Got it for 20 BRL (about 5 USD right now) from Amazon in Brazil, and I still feel it is worth less than that.
It's fun to play around aimlessly for a bit, but when you get to the story, it's a mess. The challenge objectives, level design and gameplay feel completely disconnected from each other, almost as if it was a bad mod for an otherwise okay game.

Wow it looks like the ds version is a completely different game with some maps roughly being the same and also with some more features added and a surprisingly alright touchscreen mini game similar to the name the trick thing or whatever it's called but i think they barely used it. It works and runs great and there are barely any bugs ever, very solid programming.
I don't know if you're still taking requests through comments since you set up your website but i'd love if you would at least give the ds version a try

the ps2 version tbh was pretty normal sure you had less features nail the manual, most of the story, the story is seen through first person, the world is divided into sections, craving is not included, you can only do half of the rigger stuff, honestly thpg on ps2 feels more like a tony hawk game than the ps3

Hey Radrat! I recently played Tony Hawks proving ground again, and I had the same problem that you did on the photo challenge in the Subway. I ended up finding out how to beat it though. Before you do the tricks that are listed, you have to set the camera up in front of the object you’re supposed to skate, and then snap a picture of it!

This and Project 8 are among the worst Tony Hawk games of all time! It's such a shame they were released right after one of the best in the series, which is American Wasteland.

  • @jordannewitt
    @jordannewitt Год назад

Proving Ground is much more stable than Project 8. Still finicky but the performance is at stable around 25-30fps. Some dips in transitionary areas. Bails are cleaner (no more of that ridiculous quasi-hall of meet mode), speed and balance metres are more consistent and the animations are smoother. Still not perfectly refined but definitely better.
Getting off your board provides a huge opportunity for exploration and makes it easier to navigate certain situations. You can be more exact about where you're starting a line without over shooting it when you circle back to the start. It also helps you feel like a streetwise skater rat, getting off your board and climbing stuff to find different areas to skate and make different lines for yourself.
Stevie Williams is pretty tech? Not too sure why we're being so dismissive of any other skater besides Rodney Mullen showing the skater tech tricks. You did this in your review of Wasteland as well when you had to compete in flatland against Daewon Song. Stevie's a professional and a good skater. A simple flip to manual to flip out is also on the tamer side of tech as far as these games and general skating goes (especially next to Rodney).
Nail the Trick is an extra, challenging mechanic that can actually give you plenty of points if you know what you're doing. Especially adding it to a regular combo where your metres are more weighted cause you've been skating a bit and you've used up your focus or speed doing reverts.
And what's stupid about using it to clear gaps? An extra bit of problem solving that gets you to engage with the games mechanics? You can't just skate up to a gap and do it, you might the other tools at your disposal: nail the Trick, aggro kicks and rigger pieces. I found it challenging and satisfying.
Aggro kick is a huge benefit to certain parts of the game. A rewarding little rhythm based mechanic that adds a lot of momentum to starting up a jump. But you're right that you can use rails instead. You can even use rails from your rigger kit. Plenty of choice that ties in well with the game's outlook.
I like how the nail the grab mechanic works: you've 'nailed' it once you extend fully. No half arsed grabs. I know they're real tricks too but it sacrifices that little bit of accuracy to reward you for fully committing to the extension.
You have to set up the camera yourself for the Stevie mission. They could've communicated it better though, I agree.
Player creator, despite missing gender options, is MUCH better than Project 8. It's not locked to preset skaters and has way more options. Better than Project 8 AND American Wasteland's story mode character customisation.
Collecting the nail on the car in Jeff's mission works better in a grind.
In Jeff's final mission, you only have to hit the Flip ramp/goal posts and the bank rail in front of it. You have to use your rigger pieces to get over the obstacles (and use them in the combo to count), but you don't have to combo the bins and storage container. It's consistent with the criteria they give you in the previous rounds and you can find the objective explanation in the pause menu.
Very impressive what you did though. I had a crack at that method as well and found it very engaging and fun.
I don't agree with Hardcore being forgettable. The Crazy 21 episode was hilariously over the top. Reminded me of the Underground games and Wasteland. I loved it. I love how the hardcore missions get you to use the mechanics and all you have to worry about is skating as well as you possibly can. No cameras or extra pieces. Just use the environment to the best of your ability.
The slash grind animations are slightly different to general grinds. Pay attention to the hands and posture. I like the old school homage to the zephyr era of bowl skating. Feeds into Hardcore's individualistic, skating hard and for yourself ethos
There's directional indicators for the street challenges. Plus it encourages you to explore and find where that other marker is. Gets you to see more of the game world and makes it more challenging.
I think the Sheckler/Burnquist challenge needs you to approach the rigged quarter pipe at a specific angle. Maybe go up it straight and don't transition to another qp. The rigged quarter pipes can be a bit jerky though I'll give you that.
It's a shame you had this experience. I'm playing the game right now and I'm thankfully not running into these issues. I'm enjoying the new mechanics and everything's working relatively well. Plenty of things need tidying though, you're right about that. Still this runs way better than Project 8 (playing them back to back, dude it's night and day. Project 8 on next gen is the worst mainline TH game prior to RoboModo. Genuinely broken and an absolute mess.)
Proving Ground is an underrated little gem. Not as masterful as Underground or the Pro Skater games but a decent final effort from Neversoft.

Tony may have had said what he did (I saw interview when it came out) but I was thinking we may see him work with another company with new title, and have a big "executive" influence. Think something along the lines of "Skateboard All Day" for a title but have Hawk all over production and commercial. However, what about Riley Hawk Pro Skater? Maybe his son will take over? Just some thoughts

They have the rights to the Tony Hawk's {Game Name} brand, but they have lost the rights to Tony's likeness. No one can create a game now called "Tony Hawk's Skateboarding Friends". There may be more nuance to the deal but that's the gist.

I liked Proving Ground, but I experienced every single glitch and problem that you did. It's funny, because back in 2016 I was thinking about compiling a video list of all of them. After a while, the game actually stopped working entirely, tricks would stop working and there were a lot of progression glitches in the very beginning of the game, so I could never complete another playthrough.
