    Episode Notes:
    1. Most of what you see here is captured from real hardware. A few arcade games are MAME footage.
    2. After Burner Climax is the PS3 version.
    3. Outrun 2 is the 360 Online version.
    4. Many of these have modern, or at least more modern, releases other than their original console versions.
    5. After Bruner did have a game called Sky Target appear in 3D, but that was more a spinoff than a direct sequel.
    6. To date, I believe the only thing that saved the N64 from being a massive failure, was Nintendo's first party games.
    7. I needed to use the GTA3 footage carefully. There are so many copyright pitfalls with that title, I had to be quite picky. It's why I ended it with a cinematic.
    8. Final Fantasy VII was considered for this episode. One of my considerations was not just that the game have polygon elements to its visuals but that the gameplay itself takes advantage of the 3D world. Final Fantasy VII is mostly played with polygon characters against 2D backdrops. I felt Shining Force III was a much better example of a real jump to 3D.

Great episode as always. Nintendo really nailed the transition to 3D in a way that many companies could only dream of. Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, F-Zero, even Star Fox were all flawless transitions and laid the template for others to follow.
Only criticism is the omission of FF7. Even though it had a lot of pre-rendered graphics, I would still consider it a huge jump for the franchise.

I was around 7/8yrs old when the 64 was released. I had a snes and was crazy about video games but had zero clue that a follow up console was coming let alone a 3D capable one. The very first time I saw one it literally blew my little kid mind.
My mom had brought me along to her friend’s son’s birthday party and they were very well-off financially. I walk in and a group of kids were all gathered around a huge 90s style rear projection big screen hooked up to a loud home theater sound system with booming bass. I remember the exact moment when I thought “is this… a Mario game!?”. I stood there completely dumbfounded. I didn’t know anyone there but it didn’t take long before I was asked if I wanted a turn. They tried handing me the controller but I didn’t even know how to hold it lol.
Cut to that Christmas and I absolutely flipped OUT when I got an N64. Like the viral video of that kid. I hadn’t even asked for one so my parents knocked it out of the park that year. Such great memories I have with that system.

I recently went to an arcade that's opened up at the mall I live near now - and it has a four seater Outrun 2 machine, with motion seats! I was in heaven. I felt transported back to my youth. And what a fun game all these years later. When most people think Outrun, they think the arcade original. When I think Outrun, I think of Outrun 2.

It’s official Mario is better than Sonic, I still love Sonic but I have never cared for his 3D games and Mario simply does 3ad games better than its competitors, Ratchet and Clank, Rayman and all the other overrated 3D platformer like Spyro wnd even Sonic Adventure over their existence to Super Mario 64.

Also Grand Theft Auto is another great example of a game that successfully made the jump 3D with Vice City being my favourite in the series on PS2 and you’re right, the GTA series was a major factor in the success of the PS2.

I recently played Metroid Prime Remastered on the Switch and I think the 2D ones are way better. There was stuff in Prime I absolutely despised, particularly how the entire game world was poorly connected and required way too much lengthy backtracking through the same areas over and over again. The 2D ones have some backtracking but Metroid Prime's world is way slower and less fun to maneuver through. The space pirates are also some of the most annoying enemies I've ever dealt with in a game, and then when I got to the Omega Pirate boss fight I had enough and shelved the game with no intention of picking it up again.

That's because Metroid Prime was almost getting to be like an FPS game, but without the shooting stuff and still follows the formula. It does differently than what Halo or Call if Duty in terms of there gameplay perspective. And yeah. Prime has it's backtracking moments. All Metroid games have. But if u know exactly where to go & best way to get or travel, than u can cut the backtracking parts no problem. Speedrunners shows alot of stuff u can do. The game has alot of replay values that u can find ways to make the length of the game shorter than your first playthrough.

The Shining Force III trilogy is indeed a masterpiece, Shining the Holy Ark also made the jump to 3D earlier and it's also fantastic. True, the GTA series defined the 6th generation.
As for Road Rash, I agree the PC has the smoothest performance, followed by the Saturn, but if possible, I'd suggest trying the 3DO original using Retroarch, as it allows setting the CPU to 200%, the game runs smooth as butter and it's the most polished version.

For as many games that made the transition to 3d that were amazing, one thing I HATED about the 3d boom was the attitude that EVERYTHING had to be 3d.
Not every game is improved by adding another dimension. For every Mario and Zelda that worked very well in 3d, there was a Sonic or Castlevania that lost so much charm and excitement when making the transition.
Admittedly Sonic and Castlevania have their fans and sonic in particular is getting better in 3d, but the road hasn’t been a smooth one.
I am glad that 2d games are going through a revival as of late.

The terrible sequels to The Sands of Time ruined the greatness of that game, and the franchise pretty much ended there.
Not everyone likes every game and that's the way it should be, the group herd mentality's opinion should never sway someone's own opinion and enjoyment of a game.
The Prince of Persia franchise wasn't run into the ground like numerous others we could all mention with mindless sequels every year, and for that i'm glad.

Great video and great quality as always, i've always said that you make television look like paint drying or grass growing.
Dude I got some good ideas for future episodes for ya.
    1. Warner Bros & The Sega Genesis = An episode where you go over all the games on the system that had the Looney Tunes characters in them. (Taz-Mania/Taz In Escape From Mars/Bugs Bunny Double Trouble/Sylvester & Tweety Cagey Capers/Speedy Gonzales Cheese Catastrophe and that Road Runner and Wylie Coyote game.
    2. Toaplan & The Sega Genesis = A video where you go over all of the Toaplan shooters and other games from the now defunct company on the system. I don't think you've done this yet.
    3. Just generally would love to see you review more obscure games from the Mega Drive/Genesis and other systems as long as they don't show Streets of Rage, the Shinobi games, Castlevania Bloodlines or Batman Returns, those games seem to pop up far too much in your videos.

Good list! Growing up in the '90s and early '00s was absolutely exciting! The jump to 3D was quite revolutionary! I played many of the games on this list and was just blown away at how some of my favorites turned out in a 3D environment. Yes, some have aged better than others now, but if you can look past some of the past game limitations and design, a lot of these games still can be a lot of fun!
Also, Pac-Man World was good, but I'd argue *Pac-Man World 2* was even better! They gave the game more polish, made it fully 3D, and gave it an incredibly underrated soundtrack! The only thing is, don't go for 100% on every level unless you like to torture yourself. It's brutal. Trust me.
I really hope Sega Lord X's next list of bad 2D to 3D series *doesn't* include Castlevania. I actually really enjoyed Castlevania Legacy of Darkness on the N64. I mean, yeah, it's no Symphony of the Night, but it is a pretty decent game that can be a lot of fun! It brought Castlevania action to a 3D environment quite well!

I saw a lot of games I expected and a bunch I didn’t expect (but also didn’t disagree with). It’s amazing how many franchises made respectable to great transitions to 3D… but then those franchises faded out to irrelevance.
The one I felt was surprisingly missed was Final Fantasy. The franchise was a powerhouse in the 2D realm and an even bigger success once transitioned to 3D with Final Fantasy 7… the title that shot “the new guy” to the console wars to new heights and sold consoles and that helped lead them eliminate the competition and makes brands we all thought were unshakeable really quake on their boots.
Final Fantasy 7 was not only a great game… it changed RPGs forever with its lush environments, orchestrated music and emotional roller coaster stories (not to mention “movie budget” investment that then became the standard that pushed the genera to new heights).

Excellent video, SLX. There are so many games that made successful jumps from 2D to 3D. A couple that came to my mind that weren't in your list were Bomberman and Prince of Persia. Bomberman 64 was a great 3D adventure that got to be tough as nails towards the end.
