It only came 5-speed, with the longest gears you will ever find in a civic. According to the owners manual, 2nd gear was good till 67mph, 3rd gear was 111mph. Vtec would "hit" at 2,500 rpm and redline was still under 6k. Full acceleration from redlined 2nd to 3rd shift would still drop below 3k rpm.. The gears were really long. And no torque at the bottom (Si gears were 58mph in 2nd and 88mph in 3rd, at 7,200rpm). That said, you only needed the first 3 gears when driving it hard as you will never get it out of 3rd. It was so light (no sunroof, no AC, manual steering, manual windows, no power anything, smaller brakes and 13" alloy wheels made by Enkei weighing only 7lbs each) It handled so well. No need to brake going into curves, you could take any turn full throttle simply by downshifting and driving out of it. You could merge on the freeway only using 2nd gear. My favorite was when just cruising at 70-80mph in 5th, it's perfect to downshift to 3rd and "race" to 100, a sweep spot in the power band and most other Hondas will need to shift to 4th early. According to Wikipedia, the Civic VX used the D15Z1 engine, which makes 90 hp. Below a certain rpm, Vtec-e switches one intake valve on each cylinder to a tiny cam lobe, which opens the valve just enough to keep fuel from building up behind it. This improves swirl and allows the engine to use a much leaner AFR, improving efficiency. At higher speeds, Vtec-e locks both intake rockers together so they both follow the larger cam lobe. Been a car guy my whole life. When I was in my teens, I didn't care about the difference between a Civic or a Geo Metro. My 1st car was a 1970 Dodge Dart, 4dr 225ci /6. Shortly after I got a 78 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 (400ci small block,TH400-trany, factory rated at 180hp). Family hated the Firebird so they got me a 85 Mercury Cougar 5.0 (140hp AOD) After going thru "the big three" US auto makers, I got a deal on a 93 Civic Vx hatch. It was my 1st Honda, bought in 2002 and Ive never looked back. 20 years later I'm on my 8th Honda and looking to collect more. I had a 1986 Nissan Pulsar with the five speed manual and 1.6 liter engine. At 1860 pounds, it was the lightest car that I have owned. It produced 69 HP and routinely got over 40 MPG. It did not seem sluggish at all and in fact was quite responsive. Some owners reported top speed of just over 100 MPH, but that is unconfirmed. And it had a sunroof and flip up headlights.
1997 was the year toyota prius launched in japan but hybrid cars date back earlier then that. Victor Wouk modified his 1972 buick skylark engine but before that Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, an Australian automotive engineer built the first hybrid back in 1899 with the System Lohner-Porsche Mixte. but yes mass production was prius. also the honda insight was launched in 1999 in us and japan markets. love what you do keep up the great work hugs and love :D
Also another difference it’s it don’t have side moldings.. this cars are great platforms for tuning they are lightweight compared to the regular civic.. I won one with a b18c type r engine and transmission and it’s a fun car...
We had a EG Civic Si hatchback in the family and that also had the hatch, so I don't think that was specific to the VX version. Thanks for your interesting videos!
That looks a lovely little car; totally unaware that these existed. Torquey little engines with high gearing are satisfying to drive in a way that road-tests and performance statistics completely fail to capture. I'd snap that up in an instant if I saw it for sale.
If you like torquey little engines you probably wouldn't want this low-displacement version! An SI version of this car would probably be a lot of fun to drive though!
Haha that thing is so cool. I've been looking for one here in WA, but people know what they're worth. My buddy has a 95 DX hatch with the "Clam shell" hatch. Its actually super handy. He says it can get about 40 mpg going 75 on I90 lol. Great video man
We own a pair of 90's Civics, and an early CR-V RD1 with the B20 engine..most reliable cars ever made? One of our Civics is a rare Aerodeck station wagon..1998 and still in daily use.
Had this one, even in red. Got 50.5 mpg on a highway cruze of 256 miles, 5 hours driving to and from, plus around town. Still had half tank left. They could make them then, but they were made as an offset for the big gas trucks they wanted to make.....sorry I sold mine.
They made first one in 92 I had one. The differences are more deeper then what you described. It comes w special head that is it’s made slightly different and uses an ability to control vtech flow more precisely, it uses p07 ecu which is I believe the only one that can run this engine way it should, it have an highly efficient egr system, air dam under the rear and front bumpers and more aerodynamic spoiler if I’m not mistaken all of which is almost impostor spot just by glancing over it. And best I did in it was 30 city and 49highway by myself driving it like a grandma watching shift light and 24/35 w passenger and regular driving lol
Probably to help it have a slight more get up without hurting the mpg too much. I own a VX and they slow af. I did a lil bit to it an now it can somewhat get to parkway speed without taking 5 miles.
Same exact body shell, tail gate hatch arrangement as any other Civic hatch from that time. It was just lightened as much as possible. Rear wiper delete to save weight. That had to be good for at least 1 mpg. I’m surprised to see air conditioning. Talk about weight gain!
The car weights 2098 lbs. This allowed it to be geared high for such a small engine. Lean burn helped, light wheels helped, no power steering pump,, etc. They also had almost no sound insulation, I added some to mine after a few years.
Yeah I Know, I sold it to you....did you ever get the plates transferred? I got a letter from California with a bridge ticket...I hope you took care of it.
Yeah I Know, I sold it to you....did you ever get the plates transferred? I got a letter from California with a bridge ticket...I hope you took care of it.
I wonder if that intake affects the fuel economy at all. Those are made for the other Civics to get an extra hp, but this one has a much different intake geometry that the others, so I'm wondering if this intake makes it less efficient at the RPM Honda tuned their stock intake to be most efficient at.
picking hot air might not be great for a start, but its fuel injected, tests with injection and super dirty filters only affect power, but not economy as the system adjusts so well, so perhaps it gains 1/8hp
The civic vx actually has 92 hp. It has some parts that no other civic of that generation had: an aluminum driverside mount and ac compressor bracket on ac equipped cars. It also has a grill block in the front bumper, a front air dam under the front bumper and a smoothed out underbody at the rear bumper. Hot air intakes actually are popular in the eco modder community bc it increases mpgs. The green shift light is in both the 1992-95 cx civic hatchback and same year vx models. The cx had 70 hp and yet they both share the same tall geared transmission. I owned 2 and am building a 3rd. Epa estimates were 47 city 55 hwy. I got around 57 mpg in my last vx.
I bought a blue 93 vx brand new. On the window sticker it said 55 mpg highway.it The best I ever got with mine was going to Florida from Missouri and I got 62 miles to the gallon. I could only get 8 gallons in the tank from empty to full. They were supposed to have a 10 gallon tank.
@jason9022 Mike is right. The most efficient engine is not the cleanest, as measured by concentrations of the usual pollutants in the exhaust. Possibly, oxides of nitrogen were high due to lean burn.
Ford did eventually have to take their V-10 off the market, due to poor emissions and fuel economy. I also believe poor sales also had a lot to do with it. Same goes for the V-10 that Dodge used in their Ram pickup for a few years.
@@will2993 While I do stand corrected on the V-10 Triton, you're also talking about a vehicle that's primarily sold to commercial fleets. The average Joe isn't buying these to haul his family around in, as was the case with the Excursion. Lol!

Hi my friend! Good Vídeo! I From Brazil and my english is bad! I Have a question! I Have one Civic VX and In 5500rpm this car makes a noise! What is it? I have preocupation and tanks for you help!
All 92-95 Civic hatchbacks have the clamshell hatch. Also the engine makes more HP than TQ. Vtec is on the 8 intake valves only, the exhaust valves run on a continuous lobe where as the intake rockers lock together in the 5kish rpm range making all intake valves run on a higher lift and duration cam lobe. Vtec E is where the camshaft has two different base intake cam lobes where one intake valve per cylinder opens up a tad more creating a swirling affect inside the cylinder for better fuel mileage and atomization. After Vtec engages the E part does nothing. The E is only on the base cam lobe not the Vtec lobe. Also CX and VX models had no A/C, no radio with antenna block off, had no rear wiper/wiper delete, no power steering/manual rack & pinion, some only had one side view mirror on driver’s side, no sunroof, no passenger side airbag, they had no black plastic outside door moldings and there were several other weight saving features for fuel economy over all the other model dx,lx,ex, and SI models of that year. The EG year Civic was really a great car!!! I’ve owned 4 different ones over the years!!! My favorite was my red CX hatch.
I have factory air in my VX, but it was dealer installed. You could get some options from the dealer, I also added the right mirror, stereo, and a few other things.

I also had a 93 SI. I loved that car and wish I had it today. I bought it in 1999 with 60k miles for $5k. Mine was teal.
James Brough Oh man how I wish you could still get one that good for that cheap!
MPG is 44 city / 51 highway per Google. That's amazing!
pretty cool I wish there were more of them sometimes fuel gets really expensive
Been a car guy my whole life. When I was in my teens, I didn't care about the difference between a Civic or a Geo Metro.
My 1st car was a 1970 Dodge Dart, 4dr 225ci /6. Shortly after I got a 78 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 (400ci small block,TH400-trany, factory rated at 180hp). Family hated the Firebird so they got me a 85 Mercury Cougar 5.0 (140hp AOD)
After going thru "the big three" US auto makers, I got a deal on a 93 Civic Vx hatch. It was my 1st Honda, bought in 2002 and Ive never looked back. 20 years later I'm on my 8th Honda and looking to collect more.
Fun facts about the Vx hatchback: 55mpg was no fluke, it was thru great engineering. The 1.5 Vtec-E (E stood for Economy, it ran as a 12valve outside Vtec) made 92hp, 10 less HP than the non-Vtec 16valve 1.5 Dx base. It only came 5-speed, with the longest gears you will ever find in a civic. According to the owners manual, 2nd gear was good till 67mph, 3rd gear was 111mph. Vtec would "hit" at 2,500 rpm and redline was under 6k. Full acceleration from redline 2n'd to 3rd shift would still drop below 3k rpm, If you were in a drag race that required more than 2nd gear, you lost.. The gears were really long is what I'm saying.. And no torque at the bottom (Si gears were 58 in 2nd and 88mph in 3rd, at higher rpm too). I loved that car.. So much fun and +50mpg too !
Edit: OMG I forgot about the up-shift light !! Thanks for the flood of memory's. Also forgot the 2-piece rear hatch was special to Vx, thought it was standard.
Wow, Thank you I'm glad I could jog your memory
@@2stroketurbo i remember the up-shift light would always be early. If you tried to shift when the light turned on, if felt like you were lugging the motor and walking the crank. But if you just gave it more gas, the light would go out until you lifted. It wasn't there to tell you max rpm shift speed..
I have a set of those wheels . They are forged aluminum and only weight 8lbs each . Made by Enkei
fupabox the rims is what I am looking for. Congratulations
I didn't know the wheels were made by Enkei. Interesting.
James Brough i think all Honda rims were
9.8LBS per wheel are the specs I found but I haven't weighed one myself. I do have 3 sets of them though so I still might weigh one at some point.
The Civic VX will do 120MPH in 3rd gear or 4-5th gears.
MPG for those early 90s VX models was in the range of 48 to 55 mpg for the highway cycle.
What a gem. Love the hatchs had one but was rotted out id love to own this beast 😍
hybrids were around in testing/prototype phases, i think they were being sold in Japan by the late 90s
Also another difference it’s it don’t have side moldings.. this cars are great platforms for tuning they are lightweight compared to the regular civic.. I won one with a b18c type r engine and transmission and it’s a fun car...
I went from a 1985 CRX HF to a 1995 Civic CX. It was a great ride.
We had a EG Civic Si hatchback in the family and that also had the hatch, so I don't think that was specific to the VX version.
Thanks for your interesting videos!
yeah I saw that fold down gate on later Civics too
Yes all eg hatch styles of these years have the split truck / tailgate so cool
That looks a lovely little car; totally unaware that these existed. Torquey little engines with high gearing are satisfying to drive in a way that road-tests and performance statistics completely fail to capture. I'd snap that up in an instant if I saw it for sale.
If you like torquey little engines you probably wouldn't want this low-displacement version! An SI version of this car would probably be a lot of fun to drive though!
I have one if you are interested , not sure where you are
@@jeedwards1981 I'm in New Zealand. My guess is that you aren't...?
all the civic hatch backs of this year had that split tailr gate
The main reason for the MPG is it has a wideband o2 enabling it to run extremely lean on a cruise.....and all the eg hatches have that tailgate
Haha that thing is so cool. I've been looking for one here in WA, but people know what they're worth.
My buddy has a 95 DX hatch with the "Clam shell" hatch. Its actually super handy. He says it can get about 40 mpg going 75 on I90 lol. Great video man
I got a VX in Kentucky I'll sell you. 1200$. Definitely not in as good of shape as this one in the video but still pulls 40-50 mpg.
@@erikp6766 still have it? Where in KY? I'm in TN.
We own a pair of 90's Civics, and an early CR-V RD1 with the B20 engine..most reliable cars ever made?
One of our Civics is a rare Aerodeck station wagon..1998 and still in daily use.
That one is clean, I just picked up a ‘94 VX
I believe it is the 92-95 hatchback that get good gas mileage
I had the vx civic in 93. I got 61 mpg on hwy. amazing car
Mpg
Why would you put a high-performance air intake on that engine ???
I agree. The owner must have thought "the box said +10HP".
I loaded up about 500LBS in my civic vx and took a trip and still got 50MPG.
I'm so glad I've found your channel :D weird normal cars are so cool hahaha
I just bought this car.... exact same plate.
@@VP_IGSD I hate it when I get tickets from the people I sold my car to. ;-D
@@VP_IGSD Sounds like you sold the car to the wrong person, guaranteed it has been destroyed with mods and driven recklessly and wrecked by now.
It's probably already been commented, but i'm being lazy. All of the 92-95 Honda Civics have the split hatch.
The VX did not have a passenger side mirror. Somebody has added that one.
Oh yea! I wish I had one. It's criminal that they don't make cars today that are straight gas with good mileage
The upshift indicator isn't new-the '84 Honda CRX had that. That was also a high MPG car
The EPA deemed these as "gross polluters", causing Honda to stop making it. Yet a v10 Ford Excursion was a low emissions vehicle somehow
@@kevinbarrow9588 no they didn't, you can buy an E350 cab-chassis with one today
@@will2993 While I do stand corrected on the V-10 Triton, you're also talking about a vehicle that's primarily sold to commercial fleets. The average Joe isn't buying these to haul his family around in, as was the case with the Excursion. Lol!
@@kevinbarrow9588 the excursion with the v10 was so silly
Crazy looking back at my car... before I bought it! And brought it to California ahahaha
Love the wheels on it!
I always wanted one of those
I just bought a civic hatchback VX 94 same color same miles same motor but without AC
I almost thought this was the one Mr. Regular reviewed. But that was a 1995 VX.
That warm air intake is pointless.
I think the hatch was just an option for all civic’s of the era
It was the only option for hatches
Well, that is just logical, i don’t know where you came up with it
Most other civics back then didn’t have a tach either.
Great video but wrong info...the CX and other EG hatches had the tailgate /liftback glass.
I have the same one. I am repairing it.
It has 92 horsepower; not 60.
Differences is that the vx didnt come with rear wiper and lift knob to reduce weight.
I have one it's in rougher shape and a shit ton more miles over a 100k more than that one and still gets 40-50 mpg.
My friends 93 civic si had the same tailgate setup so I’m pretty sure it’s not exclusive to the vx trim.
I had one brand new. Ran it like a rally car.
That Civic wasnt feat in a Episode of Regular Car Review?
SpikerDragon95 no that one had much lower mileage.
@@francismartinez6049 ooooohhh! Thanks for the info buddy
92-95 civic hatches are two piece.
I wish my crx had that high a 5th gear, I´m getting like 4500rpm at highway speeds :D
AWESOME ‼️
This engine the vtec-e is tuned for economy not power.Never had these in our country.
What country u from
It's tuned down. 3 valves open before VTEC, 4 open after VTEC engagement at 2500rpm. Hp is 92, torque is 97, pulls hard but great mileage on the highway

RPM limiter/governer

Cool 😀
55 mpg
Kenneth Hausmann I used mine for racing!!! It had a JDM Honda Integra Type R engine in it the B18C!!! I wanted mine to be as light as possible... Unfortunatley I lost that go kart rocket ship in a garage fire back in 2012!!!! I still can’t get over it!!! It was a beautiful Milano Red hatch! It even had the factory leather/pleather/PVC wtv front and rear seats. Everything else was completely gone!!! No radio no speakers just nothing!!! That 1.8l DOHC VTEC was the only MUSIC I needed in that driver’s car!!! I had it all setup to race... 150 shot of N2O/Nitrous ZEX kit hidden. I won a lot of good $$$$ and had some great races in that thing. Everyone thought it was just an all stock all motor Type R swap! Nope!!! To find one in such good condition all stock and then to modify it so well all just to loose it and not get anywhere near what I put into it from the insurance killed me!!! It’s still killing me!!! 😢
AC was an option in both the VX and CX. My sister had a 1992 VX with AC and my brother-in-law had a 1994 CX with AC.
My 94 vx has a passenger-side airbag, roller rockers are on the V-tech E. Both of my civic vx cars had antennas as well. I don't understand why the CX would be your favorite as it has 22 less HP and almost 10 less MPG.
The vx had no ac,ps an the hatchback on all civic hatchbacks are the some but wiper no wiper on vx
Incorrect, my sister had a 1992 VX with AC.
I have a 94 VX with factory A/c
all 92-95 (eg) civic hatchbacks have the tail gate. wasn't special to the vx
