  • Learn how to scan large scale (or small scale) artwork to create a digital copy that can be used to reproduce prints, greetings cards, mugs or whatever products you'd like to put your design onto.
Having your artwork scanned or photographed professionally can be expensive. Using the method I show you in this video enables you to do this yourself on a budget.
    Everything I used:

I worked as graphic artist for a sign company and I had an argument with my boss many years ago about scanner resolutions. We did more than just signs. We were given an old leather bound book that was over 150 years old at the time. The book had very old prints of Rome and surrounding areas. The scanner we had was an AGFA 2400 dpi A4 optical scanner. To prove a point I scanned at 300dpi, what he wanted. And then during my own time I scanned the images at 2400 dpi and printed the result out at various resolutions. A 600dpi printout, it was obvious the detail from the higher scan resolution. Yeah, scanning at 300 dpi and printing at 600, eww. But its what the boss wanted, until he saw the results.

Hi Shannon, I've spent the morning trying variations. I've now got it! Saved as JPG, exported into Lightroom & then exported back out in A4 dimensions as a Tiff. What a palaver, but I'm pleased that I can move to the next stage. Your videos are very informative, thanks so much.

Omg - new Sub here!!! I can’t believe what I’ve just watched! I just bought a Lide 300 after watching someone else’s review here on RUclips, but I’ve now realised, after half a day of trying to do what he did with editing pre-scan, that he was using an Apple Mac app, and not the Lide to edit…. 😢🤮 So half a day later, and missing out on hours of designing, I’ve now discovered YOUR tutorial! OMG….. This is amazing! It covers everything I wanted, PLUS, you also use Affinity!!!
I moved to Affinity Designer and Photo a year ago, from adobe, for financial reasons too, and am still very much a beginner on Designer, and haven’t even started Affinity Photo yet. I’ve been learning surface pattern design on illustrator, so now have to learn how to apply it in Designer, but the price was right, with the same results, so I only have to learn how to do it once, and then it’s rinse and repeat.
I’ll be a professional after learning this stitching from you! Omg! I like to work big, so this is just so, so perfect. You have just changed my life. Thankyou so much. And your artwork really is next level, by the way. 🙌

Hello it's lovely to have you here! I'm glad the video was helpful, thank goodness there's an easier way to do these things and once you get the process right it's just rinse and repeat like you say! This saves me so much time and stress.. and lots of money! 😂
Affinity is the best I would never go back to Photoshop now, it does everything I need it to do and more. Thank you so much I hope you have a lovely day ❤️

I just watched this again, 11 months later, and I noticed you used ‘Custom’ in the Set up, not Autoscan, which is what I used previously. I’ve just bought a painting course and she scans her artwork, then uses Photoshop to clean it up. I just love this idea! …. I’ll be using Affinity Photo instead, but I’ve just re-read what I wrote above 11 months ago, and you use Affinity as well, so no doubt you use Photo, so I know it’s possible. I just need to figure out how… But I’m so impressed that an artist of your calibre uses a Lide 300. It’s the cutest little scanner, but it obviously pumps out quality prints, so I know I’m on the right track.

WARNING! Please avoid the mistake I made in not checking the quality before scanning lots of pictures. If you look closely there may be a big line running all the way down your pictures which you may only notice if you zoom in. This is more noticeable on black or white print. Tried adjusting settings but with no joy. Just had to return to 2 off these.
If any one has any ideas of how to not get the lines it would be helpful please???
Please note they where both new. Trying another new one later tonight.
    Good luck!

I too (happily) use Affinity but I'm stuck at the scanning stage. Also, which country is it made in?

Thank you so much! It's such a challenge figuring it all out isn't it. I think it would work well enough you'd just have to do a lot of editing on the scan. I find myself having to play around with the levels, contrast, colour balance etc to get closer to the original work. I'm sure canon accept returns so you could always try it out and send it back if it doesn't work for you? ☺️

Also, my artwork is A4 size, so I don't need to stitch together, but I've been scanning on a normal printer/scanner and at a high res (2400), but it's still not looking sharp? Any ideas? The aim is to reproduce prints and to use the file to send to get printed as A4 prints but also to use as greetings cards. Thanks Shannon.

I save as a TIFF as it's a larger file size meaning it's better quality! I'm not too sure why it wouldn't look sharp have you tried editing the scan in an editing software afterwards?
