Ray Barbee had a huge influence on my skating as I emulated his style and learned all his tricks after this video came out. Everyone I knew wanted to skate like him and Matt Hensley at this time. I ended up quitting skating when I saw Ray Barbee 360 kickflip down som huge amphitheater stairs at this place we called the "Bum Bowl II" at The Hyatt Regency in Downtown Long Beach during the Action Sports Expo that all these pro skaters were in town for, it was another level that I wasn't prepared to ascend to. I was ollieng down these huge steps, and i look over and his board is flipping and spinning in the air and i thoight he was gonnslam and he just landed and rolled away ahead of me, and a my hopes and dreams were crushed!!!!!!😂😂😂
Ray is def in the elite group of skateboarding luminaries, legends of all time. Natas was a pioneer of his time for innovation and exploration of what you can do on a skateboard, Ray was the first (and still the best) at bringing smooth to the game, effortless, graceful smoothness…a pleasure to watch…his style and this music make this clip legendary and almost mesmeric. Bless you Ray Barbee.
Good point about Natas. He was amazing too but when Ray did it he was so graceful and he also took his time. My second favortie under Natas for sure and I'd say my third favorite would be Frankie Hill. Frankie was the first skater I ever seen go freaking bigger than anyone else.
Going to the store to get my dads newspaper I WAS Ray! Hitting every curb cut, trying all the no comply and 43 variations. Trying to emulate that waterlike flow. Stoked at hitting up a trick in the evening sunshine with the only person to appreciate it being me. Getting home all sweaty to hear the old man saying 'might as well have got tomorrow's paper you've been that long😂. Back in my room watching endless skate footage. Buzzing for the next time on board. I'm 48 now knees are shot and back is too. But I'll still look at a spot old and new as I drive by them. And I'll always be a skater.
such a mesmerizing part i love how personal these older parts feel, it's like you get to see this person just exactly as they are, flaws and greatness alike you miss out on a bit of that when you get to the parts that are just one trick, cut, one trick, cut, etc. all skating is sick but this just oozes that natural style
I remember when the tape dropped , 89 maybe early 90 - 91 whanna say , street skate was definitely starting to bloom , but Vert was still strong in our area , some serious throw back memories here after 93 into like the 90s before Xtreme Games ,, Vert was done , the boards were changing , the wheels were getting way smaller , from vert wheels , which were massive compared to what the new ones . The decks were revolutionized. But I still love all my vert decks , Hasoi was my go too , my first deck was Powell , good stuff , thanks for sharing , i officially feel old .
Skating like water moving down a hill, smooth ground or obstacle, just flowing and looking like a part of nature About as natural as a fish swimming. You can't teach effortless style and creativity. This man added some tributaries to the river, very pleasing to view
My first time learning about this dude was some guy at my local library introducing me to this video back in 2011 and I’ve been in love every since. Ray Barbee rocks !
After seeing this video for the first time way back then me and all my friends HAD to learn No Complys right away. But nobody could pull them off as smoothly as Ray B! The guy made everything look so effortless.
There is such a diffrence with this era. True everything today is better. Yes H-Steet came out with better tricks later on but Powell showed the way. This was a period of exploring what was possible on a skateboard and doing it with style. Today there are no limits , but back then no one knew that so everything was fresh. Love this Barbee part. Good times!!
I wouldn't say everything is better, perhaps progressed into bigger and crazier tricks, sure, but skating is art and expression. These tricks are still as relevant as they day they were shot. I would also add that watching skate videos these days don't make me want to skate nearly as much as the 80s and early 90s ones do. Barbee is the king of smooth, and how could you not want to go skate after watching this. Ultimate inspiration.
Camera man did an amazing job. Some of these shots are really great, like the one of Barbee riding along the graffiti when the car passes by, and the shot of him riding past the people on the sidewalk. It looks so effortlessly high-budget like it’s out of a TV show. As we get further in to the future it must feel increasingly “cool” to have this footage of yourself in such a raw era.
Such a cool dude too, met him when we were 16, he was showing a bunch of us how to do stuff between Savanah Slamma contest and just so humble hanging out with everyone as equals. Agreed, one of the smoothest skaters to every ride, he literally floated through the streets.
I'm really glad I started skating when iwas young because I realize now that it helped me to enjoy things in my life; moments and people and not be in competition with them or myself. Thank you skateboarding. Thank you all the ams and pros that would look out with gear and decks who took us to comps and skateparks or would just come skate for a min and chill. I'm just one of many old youngster knuckleheads that appreciates that if you peep it long enough you see the movement.
Dude doing manual to kickflip way back then. Buttery smooth style. My wife just bought an original Ray Barbee board and a few others for 30 bucks. Didn't even realize what she bought lol.Its been skated and definitely not perfect but it will go perfectly with my little retro collection I have going.
I love how skate vids were at the time. Just cruising. Also the music and slow mo tgrough the entire video was sick. Not everythings gotta be hd and filmed perfectly, add some character
Bones Brigade was the SEAL Team Six of Skateboarding back in the 80s. They set the benchmark. I don't think anyone back then could imagine the meteoric evolution that skateboarding would undergo.
Barbee's parts in Ban This and Propaganda are the two greatest skate performances in the history of skate videos. Smoothest skater who ever lived by far. This performance was the most fluid of all time. None better. Some came close but this tops um all.
Those boards were heavy af back then too. Consider that when watching this, that makes it even more phenomenal.. get hit in the shin, or chin, with that bad boy- it feels like a 4x4 in the hands of Hacksaw Jim Duggin when it connects with your face, or shin.
Perhaps it will seem silly to you... But since I saw this video in my childhood, I have never seen a better way to go to do the necessary shopping for mother than how Mr Ray goes to the bakery. It's still amazing the way to flow
So beautiful - so smooth. Those no-complies... I don't even know what happens at 1:19, bu that frontside no-comply 180 shifty at 1:22 is SICK I tried that a thousand times and nah.
used to idolize this guy. id be mistaken for him 2wyce a week sumtimes bak then. I'm so smooth nowwww..... It would be a joy for ray to be mistaken for meeee. rambo abs is partly why my style is so cleannnn
@1:17 is that called backside bigspin 360 body varial? I never really caught that when I first saw this back in the day..weird. I thought it looked sick but I guess I didn't understand what he was doing then.
It would've been called a gazelle spin back then, but nowadays people would call it a nollie gazelle spin. It's one of Mullen's freestyle tricks that got adapted to street in this era. This part is one of my favorites, almost like a snapshot of when street skating was evolving the fastest

He had the smoothest footwork i'd ever seen...that fluidity and linking of tricks was unreal
i thought the same
I had to learn how to do no complys after watching this the first time
Yeah to everything you just said
it seems like he's floting
He is.

This was one of the first video parts that ever made an impression on me because of how smooth he looked and just so casually cool.
not only do the tricks, style and music age well, so do the clothes. A perfect mix of skating and cinematography
Loved this part when I was a teen. It really warms my heart to watch it again, those care free years of my life just dreaming of being a good skater.
barbee was effortless. he looked like he was just walking around. the no comply is one of the prettiest tricks ever.
This gentleman is one of the real skaters in the history.
I have never seen someone so light on their feet. Amazing
A man ahead of his time, particularly with those boneless tricks.
One of the most gifted fluid skaters ever to roll. Every trick is effortless❤️
Going to the store to get my dads newspaper I WAS Ray! Hitting every curb cut, trying all the no comply and 43 variations. Trying to emulate that waterlike flow. Man back in the early nineties Ray Barbee was my hero.
Six Years!
such a mesmerizing part

you miss out on a bit of that when you get to the parts that are just one trick, cut, one trick, cut, etc.
all skating is sick but this just oozes that natural style
Poetry in motion, beautiful artistic flow, takes me back to an era of love
Nobody can replicate his style. He means it!
To me Ishod is Ray on steroids. Effortless.
Ray and the Gonz are my two favorite skaters. Everything's just so smooth and natural. You can't fake it.
He was always so smooth and light on his board. He is like watching a surfer on a wave.
Skating like water moving down a hill, smooth ground or obstacle, just flowing and looking like a part of nature
About as natural as a fish swimming. You can't teach effortless style and creativity. This man added some tributaries

This never gets old. loved his style. I always tried to mimic Ray back in the day... No complys for for days!!!
Fluid natural talent. I'm so glad this guy found skateboarding. Or maybe it found him??
Back in the day! Smooooooth operator this cat!
After seeing this video for the first time way back then me and all my friends HAD to learn No Complys right away. But nobody could pull them off as smoothly as Ray B! The guy made everything look so effortless.

"Everything today is better" ? Really ? Impossible.

Being from SB, think Natas, Gonz, and F. Hill, Hensley, then Hill, Wray all made the game change.

That was Stacy peralta

Beautiful. Love Rays footwork, and all of the no comply variations.
Damn, when this movie came out you could even go watch it in a cinema in Amsterdam. Ah the memories..
I watched Ban This probably 2000 times. Love this part ❤❤❤😢
I love how skate vids were at the time. Just cruising. Also the music and slow mo tgrough the entire video was sick. Not everythings gotta be hd and filmed perfectly, add some character
So smooth. Ray has the sweetest style
Pinnacle of skate filmography
They come from 2100
Far better than nowadays movies
This contains feels.
Just found this, absolutely incredible skater and this scene from BanThis still standstnr test of time, he was well ahead
I hope that if I go to heaven I can still watch Ray Barbee skate.
Bones Brigade was the SEAL Team Six of Skateboarding back in the 80s. They set the benchmark. I don't think anyone back then could imagine the meteoric evolution that skateboarding would undergo.
So Natas was like the Rambo then 😂
Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! - Natas. Maybe
Barbee's parts in Ban This and Propaganda are the two greatest skate performances in the history of skate videos. Smoothest skater who ever lived by far. This performance was the most fluid of all time. None better. Some came close but this tops um all.
Always on my mind !
Thank you for the show
The first ever kick flip I witnessed irl was Ray Barbee’s in a demo at winchester skate shop Epic!
This part is way before my time and I still think about it so often
Dude! Those no complies are crazy😳
So much soul and style to boot. Fucking guy is an inspiration in proper street skating......
I would watch this part at least once a day. Pop-shuvit-no-comply-manual kickflip, nollie gazelles--all done with that Barbee style.
Barbee was the man!!
Impresionante como hacían esas tomas para la epoca
Soooooo far ahead of time.....
30 years later and i'm still looking for this music....
Shazam it!

@@decoeric yes, but soooo hard to find lol!
@@yeahtbh.161 Agreed, I have been looking for it on and off for a few years.
I LOVE THIS SESSION!!!

Word!
Stylish as hell, some guys can make a simple trick look awesome. How he engages rhe rear foot and spins, wow! Just a no comply and it looks amazing.
As an '80s ramp skater, this was the first video to convince me that street skating wasn't stupid
Watching Ray skate is like watching an alien spacecraft that defies the laws of physics and gravity
This Tommy Guerrero
Perhaps it will seem silly to you... But since I saw this video in my childhood, I have never seen a better way to go to do the necessary shopping for mother than how Mr Ray goes to the bakery.
It's still amazing the way to flow
Unmatched culture & style on the flat
awesome classic part - i do these no complys 1000 times every day
best street skater ever
Straight Butter Flow
So beautiful - so smooth. Those no-complies...
I don't even know what happens at 1:19, bu that frontside no-comply 180 shifty at 1:22 is SICK

It's parts like this that helpe bring popular appeal to skateboarding.
this is how i want/wish to skate now that im 40
But how are you gonna skate on your deathbed????
Same here. 49 in a few months and getting back to it. Gonna (re)learn all these tricks
You can do this over 40. I'm 45 and still skate.
I had his first two boards and him being a black skateboarder made them all the more special because at the time there were a few if ne at all
magic
