It's wierd, my dad, who grew up skateboarding in the 70s felt nostalgic when we went to theatres and saw this. Now I feel nostalgic watching this thinking of all my friends and how we used to just skate until the lights at the park turned off. The subtle heat coming from the concrete filling the cool air. The smell of weed and the laughter. Always trying to one up each other but never putting each other down. I miss those times and those people. Life has become very lonely. That was back in the early/mid 2000s.
guys in my hometown would hold a once a year night time skate session, we would borrow flood lights from the local garage, set them up, and skate from sun down to sun up, makes me miss the guys i grew up skating with, and i really miss our annual "monsters ball" that shit was wild, one year we busted a bunch of glowsticks and poured the gunk all over the pool, no lights, just toxic glowing goo, wild days
I was very lucky to have grown up in that era of skating and surfing in So. Cal. Even tho me and my friends were not part of Dog Town we skated alot of the same spots as those guys. The Fruit Bowl stands out as well as the school yard banks in Glendale. Times were good back then.
Just the fact that these 3 young actors learned to skate at the Alva/Peralta/Adams level is MIND BLOWING, & you do not get more of a realistic portrayal of the Z-boys/Dogtown era than this. As another commenter quoted #MadRespect

I remember watching this movie in the theater. And it played a number on me. I actually found a fond interest in skateboarding. I loved cruising on my board, feeling calm, happy, free and alive. Skating was a great stress reliever.

Stacey went international...Tony went Hollywood...and Jay went island style (then prison)....2Barb moved down south and started hanging with us...we all defended our turf and could back it up with our surf-skate style...the Baldy pipeline was still top secret but I was riding it....it all came to an end the summer of 1980 (known as the best summer ever) before corporate capitalism took over that decade...what happened ? ... we all grew up....I still surf and skate south county.🏄🏻
I was 7 yrs old in 76', Santa Barbara Ca. I got the blue hard fiberglass Hobie skateboard with red wheels. I was jumping off curbs and learning 360's. And was so excited when they started building a skate park.... Before it was even done, we moved to KANSAS!!! NOBODY skated in Kansas....! so I got a bike..wah Wah WAH..!
This is a great movie. I grew up in So Cal in the 70s and skateboarding exploded around 75. The clothes, hair and everything were pretty damn accurate. Looks like they had a pretty good budget for this movie. Well done.

One of my favorite movies from my youth that has AGED well. Not like the beach hahaha man I loved this movie and still do. 05 I was 19 years old and man loved trying to skate.
This movie is such a classic, Catherine Hardwicke, in hindsight was a really special director, it's a shame how Hollywood treated her after the colossal success of Twilight.
Im almost 76 now and that was one of my favourite flicks, probably because I surfed, roller skated, and always been a biker, great watching how they made the movie, I honestly thought at the time those were the real characters, well done, only us so called rebels know that world,
If you think about it, this is was a multi-month private session skating 101 that guaranteed the actors to get good enough to skate bowls and even learn basic surfing to catching actual unbroken waves from pioneers of modern skating, without anyone around to make fun of them with any hassling or shit-talk. And the crazy part is, they got paid for it. Cmon man, these guys get to take away the skill of skating bowls for the rest of their lives and getting an popular acting gig that's on their resume for the rest of their lives. The dream

As an individual, who spent quite some time reading, watching, listening, and just studying, all of the Dogtown aspects. I can tell you with certainty a lot of this movie is just a composite of The real Dogtown story. Yes, a lot of the Lords of Dogtown movie was fake certain things didn’t happen that way. However, even some of the composite characters came from real people that were involved in that time. Yes Jeff Ho was left out, but in a movie sometimes you have to take certain liberties with script writing. In this case they had to write it almost as if they were doing the documentary again and they had to leave a lot out. The owner of the day original Dogbowl was a young kid who lived in a posh neighborhood and only knew some of the original Zephyr team skaters. His dying wish was that they come and skate his backyard pool which was how that story came to be. Yes… You can say a lot of the movie is fake which it is. Yes you can say A lot of the movie is real as well, in the end though it’s the story about how This team revolutionized modern skateboarding. If you really want to get and experience try watching the movie, with both commentaries. I highly recommend the actors commentaries with the Catherine Hardwick as well. Then watch the movie, with the Jay and Tony commentary. It brings a different light to the story gives it more of a real aspect. I don’t even watch the movie anymore with the regular dialogue. The main part is you enjoy the movie however you like!!! Having fun, making an art that people will enjoy. I think that was the goal of the movie!!!
I loved both the documentary about the Dogtown and the Z-Boys and the movie. I just watched a documentary about some kids in Bor, Serbia called 'Kolos- BORba se isplati'. It's fascinating that this boys have adopted the American culture of skating! Great filmography, too!
I grew up in the same time but in Florida coco beach ,we surfed skated and dreamed of one day going to California, Alva was my hero, I wore his shirts, same board I was fucin brain washed. Finally made it to Ocean Beach surf was great but people sucked. And I realized I had been living in a fantasy land for so many years, but I wouldnt change it . Now I'm 56 and still skate with my 18yr old son.

I can tell you with certainty a lot of this movie is just a composite of The real Dogtown story. Yes, a lot of the Lords of Dogtown movie was fake certain things didn’t happen that way. However, even some of the composite characters came from real people that were involved in that time. Yes Jeff Ho was left out, but in a movie sometimes you have to take certain liberties with script writing. In this case they had to write it almost as if they were doing the documentary again and they had to leave a lot out. The owner of the day original Dogbowl was a young kid who lived in a posh neighborhood and only knew some of the original Zephyr team skaters. His dying wish was that they come and skate his backyard pool which was how that story came to be. Yes… You can say a lot of the movie is fake which it is. Yes you can say A lot of the movie is real as well, in the end though it’s the story about how This team revolutionized modern skateboarding. If you really want to get and experience try watching the movie, with both commentaries. I highly recommend the actors commentaries with the Catherine Hardwick as well. Then watch the movie, with the Jay and Tony commentary. It brings a different light to the story gives it more of a real aspect. I don’t even watch the movie anymore with the regular dialogue. The main part is you enjoy the movie however you like!!! Having fun, making an art that people will enjoy. I think that was the goal of the movie!!!
This movie didn't capture half of what it was all about. It's usually like that.
Seeing the end at the dog bowl brought me to tears. I love skateboarding.

I loved both the documentary about the Dogtown and the Z-Boys and the movie. I just watched a documentary about some kids in Bor, Serbia called 'Kolos- BORba se isplati'. It's fascinating that this boys have adopted the American culture of skating! Great filmography, too!

I grew up in the same time but in Florida coco beach ,we surfed skated and dreamed of one day going to California, Alva was my hero, I wore his shirts, same board I was fucin brain washed. Finally made it to Ocean Beach surf was great but people sucked. And I realized I had been living in a fantasy land for so many years, but I wouldnt change it . Now I'm 56 and still skate with my 18yr old son.

Its crazy how much goes into movies. How many movies their are. How many good and bad ones their are. How much harder they are than music and just wow . Dope. Love this movie changed me as a kid and i dont even skate only skated for like a year 😂

I've been skating for fun for over 20 years and those boys surpassed me at training camp. Mind you, I never had the Z boys training me. Imagine making this movie as a 20 year old. Mate. On top of the world. Huge fan of Emile's acting. Underrated film.
