Much of this movie ages rather well. The Genesis device demonstration is obviously computer generated, but that fits in story because it's indeed a computer generated demo. Likewise, much of the stuff on the bridge viewscreen is obviously computer generated... in story it's computer generated. It's even entirely plausible a 23rd century ship would use a "barebones" display for tactical info, as shown in the simulation at the beginning and later showing tactical info about Reliant.
@@martinbraun1211 iirc, it took something like six months to render. There's even a flaw where the "camera" is flying toward a mountain face and suddenly a convenient gap appears to let the "camera" through. This was because the mountains were made up by the computer and this flaw wasn't noticed until late in the process. It would have taken far too long/cost too much to fully redo, so they hacked in the crack. Once you know it's there it's something you can't unsee.
And now just a few decades after that the quantum computers are about to break the 128 bit encryption on my 21st century bank account, but Starfleet ships have a 5 digit code 😏 ...which makes it occur to me, maybe they should do a Spaceballs reaction (no spoilers why I say that 😅)
I saw this in the theaters when I was 8 years old, and when it was over, I could hear sobbing around me. I also remember that year being the year that the mom and pop video store opened in my hometown and James Doohan and George Takei did a meet and greet to promote the film at the grand opening. I will never forget it. My stepdad introduced me to Star Trek, and I have been a fan ever since. So glad you girls are on this journey. I would high-five Hannah and hug toy if I could because all of us have been where the two of you are now. LLAP. ❤
Is Hannah ok? She is so fidgety. Hair, blanket, clothing, hair, blanket, hair, hair, hair...while Toy is just glued to the movie, murdering her pillow. 🤣
This reaction was on a similar level of Emma Reacts or another reactor lady where all they do is chatter all the freaking time. I don't need a play by play of your thoughts, guesses, hangups, or your hyper fixations. I'm constantly saying out loud to these kind of reactions, "SHUT UP AND LISTEN!".
At the height of his role as Mr. Roarke, he was faced with the greatest villain role in Star Trek history to that point, a flashback role from an old television episode he probably hadn't thought about in over a decade prior. If ever an actor crushed a role, it was Ricardo Montalban as Kahn Noonien Singh. (And yes, the chiseled chest is all his.)
Yeah we were all in denial after this one, it was a punch in the gut. But we held out hope, and we were right to hope. What does that mean? Keep watching the movies and you'll see. Live long and prosper, ladies!
Love how the girls have been sucked into the franchise. One of us. One of us. One of us. Side note. Toys inner Brit 🇬🇧 coming out on multiple occasions during this video when she swears had me in absolute stitches!
I was 19 years old when I saw this in the movie theater, and a life long Star Trek fan. I walked out like a zombie, like a close friend had just died for real. Instead of people talking and laughing as usual as they walked out of the theater, everyone was quiet and somber, and a lot of people were still crying.
William Shatner has gotten a lot of grief over the decades for his hammy acting style, but when he gives Spock’s eulogy, he gives us some of the best acting in his entire career.
In June of 1982 I had a stroke at the age of 13, and missed the opening weekend of this movie because I was in hospital. I went to see it the weekend after its release, when I could once again move around easily (I was more weak from the hospitalization than actually brain-damaged, fortunately). Needless to say, the movie had an enormous impact on me, so tragic but tremendously satisfying. It's just so well made. I look forward to seeing your reactions to the next two Star Trek films, III and IV, which are sometimes collectively termed, along with II, the "Genesis Trilogy".
It was formerly the custom to introduce officers below the rank of Commander as "Mister". Now it is the custom to introduce all officers by rank, but you may speak to them or of them as "Mister" when they are below the rank of Commander.
When my mates and I saw this at the cinema back in the day we were all," what the f#&K?!". Also remember, we had no internet, no google, nothing but fan magazines and wild theories and the hope they would make another movie. Great reaction again ladies!
15:44 Hannah talking about the beauty shots of the Enterprise from The Motion Picture “yes we remember what the ship looks like.” that was the whole point of the long shoots of the Enterprise, she didn’t look the same as the tv series! She had had a complete redesign. 😂
And it had been over a decade since the TV show ended. But really it was mostly about showing off their movie budget. Yes The Motion Picture drags a bit but what a soundtrack! If it's ok TV I put it on just so I can listen to the music. :D
Also, on the TV, you only ever got to see the ship in 480p, with screen sizes averaging around 17". On the big screen, you got all the benefits of the 25mm film and artful lighting.
This is to me, the best of the movie series. Ricardo Montalban did a series called Fantasy Island that was popular. He was also in Naked Gun as the antagonist.
Yes! In the movie theater everyone was shocked. You could hear the shock and disbelief in the ending it almost started a fan revolt, and they were inundated with thousands of letters how could they do that to Mr. SPOCK. 😡😡🖖🖖R.I.P. Lenard Nimoy. ✌️❤️🙏🙏🙏
I thought it was a bit of a cop out that Chekhov's earworm just happened to remove itself at an opportune moment. They could have at least made it seem like McCoy had to remove it.
Before making this movie. Ricardo Montalban rewatched Space Speed from the original series. So he could get back into character. Also, Shatner and Ricardo never saw each other on set due to Ricardo doing Fantasy Island at the same time.

I saw this in the theater with my dad when I was 9. The theater was silent after Spock's death, and people were in tears and total silent shock coming out of the movie.
It was mentioned during the inspection Scotty says that Peter is his sisters boy anxious to get into space. This was after Peter told Kirk if you can't see how fine the Enterprise then he is as blind as a Tiberian bat. Kirk called him a Tiger. I remember seeing that scene atleast on the TV version
Toy and Hannah look dreamy in this one! And, I couldn't do the Vulcan symbol with my left hand, at first. But, back in 1986, when I was eight, I held my left hand in that position for like three hours, and now I can do it easily with both hands! lmao. 🤣
One critic at the time started their review of this movie with "Star Trek 2, now THAT'S more like it". 😁 Great film. Ricardo Montelbon chewing the scenery is unforgettable!
12:34..Wish I was Toy's stress pillow..( I knew that part would gross ya both...LOL) Montleban's Kahn is still on my top 10 all-time scariest/intense evil guys in film history. Fun commentary/reactions, ladies! If u do the sequel, I'll look for it.
Great reaction! One of my favorite Trek films. Fantastic script, music, and effects. Saw it in the theater with my high school buddies. The girls were crying when Spock died. The scenes for exiting the space dock were repurposed from the first film, but with a completely different score. So the space man is the same. The practical effects for the "ear worms" was particularly gruesome. Loved Kristie Alley as Savik. Her performance was more nuanced, more curious and subtly emotional than in other films. The Genesis effect description video was the first time that type of effect had been computer generated. The first confrontation between Reliant and the Enterprise was so skillfully executed!
Okay here's the problem, I'm watching this video and my wife is in the other room... and the sounds you girls are making during your reactions to the movie sound like... like... like... okay so this is a problem and I have to turn the volume down. Then I'm thinking that she heard me turn it down and so maybe I should just turn it off but then she'll hear me turn it off and that will seem suspicious too. Girls, you can't be making sounds that will get me in trouble for watching. I don't need to hear my wife saying "Oh yeah sure is was just two girls reviewing a Star Trek movie... how stupid do you think I am right now for real?" I really like your videos but you're gonna need to work on making your videos NOT sound so much like age restricted content is all I'm trying to say. 🤐
You can always tell when they really haven’t seen the movie before. All the laughing told us how lightly they were taking everything. all of a sudden reality hits. Mister Spock is the most beloved character in Star Trek and his death really destroyed all of us at the time. Saw this when it came out and most everyone in the theater walked out in silence.
Kobayashi Maru, is the name of the ship in distress in the simulation. This is a Japanese name for the ship. Kobayashi is a common surname in Japan and means "Small Forest." It evokes a sense of vulnerability and innocence. Maru (丸) is a traditional suffix for merchant ships. It is meant to invoke good luck and protection to the ship and more practically it is used to distinguish merchants from warships.
I'm with Hannah though. I hear the name of the test and I think of Hot Dog Contest Guy and the cat with the Guinness record for being most watched on you tube.
The literary theme of Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities" ... "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times," and "It's a far better thing I do than I have ever done before, a far better rest I go to than I have ever known," both quotes from that extraordinary 19th Century novel, run all through this movie. Literary allusions have always been a part of Star Trek and have contributed to my massive personal library. Of course I have to read whatever literary work they reference because the use of that work in the story has some kind of meaning and I want to understand it. I was 8 when this movie was released so I was not ready to read Charles Dickens yet, but the time came when I was ready and now I clearly see that Spock was going to die from the very beginning of this story. Having read "A Tale of Two Cities" now, I appreciate this movie even more than I did at 8 years old. The quotes used are perfectly worked into the events of this movie in perfect fashion. For Kirk and Spock the reference was 'A Tale of Two Cities" but Khan's story was "Moby Dick." Then the Biblical references, "Genesis, life from death self -sacrifice ( Jesus Christ and then his resurrection, "Amazing Grace" etc ..) Three literary references in a single story. Beautifully done! This is one of the many reasons I love Star Trek. Its use of classic literature is outstanding and promotes education for those inclined toward such things and who have an inquisitive nature. But interestingly this story explores the philosophy of morality. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one." That line and its exploration clearly demonstrate the flaw in subacribing to mathematics when considering moral issues. What seems "rational" turns out to be urilitarian which ultimately produces immoral, irrational, and self destructive ends. In other words motality when governed by mathematics, and in some cases overly rigid standards, reduces to oppression and abuse of people in the name of morality. In this story, Spock's sacrifice was indeed rational and logical, and ut was also the greatest expression of love. But in the next film the idea is turned upside down. Utilitarian ethics is NOT the answer to moral conundeums. It almost always devolves into narcissistic justifications for immoral decisions. This was also explored and the point well made in an TV episode of Star Trek wheel Kirk confronted Kodis the Executioner, who used utilitarian ethics to justify exterminating almost an entire planet of people for the preservation of those deemed useful to society. That is the logical horror of utilitarian ethics. Yifay Bill Gates, the Gates Foundation, and the World Health Organization are doing the same thing with their call for depopulating the world. They identify the who will be useful and the who should die fir the greater good. That's utilitarian ethics in all its glory. It's reduces to evil and it is, ultimately, dehumanizing. Hannah, as you explore the philosophy of morality in your doctoral program as I have in my doctoral program, keep all this in mind and explore it to its logical conclusion. Star Trek done well has always been philosophical. I don't however subscribe to Star Trek's worldview ( secular humanist progressivism), precisely because that worldview, especially when coupled with the acids of Postmodernity's philosophical roots, leads ro moral anarchy and to the dehumanization of people. It is also self defeating. By that i mean it does not work in reality because it is not based in reality. When you study this in more detail, whether your curriculum requires it ir not i can't stess enough that you consider reading C.S.Lewis particularly "The Abolition of Man" and "The Weight of Glory" as well as David Baggett, a former philosophy professor, and current friend, of mine whose focus is moral apologetics. I think you will be challenged in a very good way.
It is inaccurate to say that Kirk has never faced death like this. He lost his brother Sam, many members of his crew and watching Edith Keeler die who he loved- but had to let it happen. True, Spock was special, but Kirk HAS faced some serious deaths.
Wonderful to see you guys reacting to this, my late dad and I were big fans of the original series back in the day (late 60s), now my kids are also Trek fans.
If you would like to see Kirstie Ally in a dramatic role; you should check out the 1980's movie called ("Runaway") also starring Tom Selleck and Gene Simmons. Great reaction
So glad you two are reacting to this gem it really is the best out of the original cast movies With themes of aging .vengence loyalty and acceptance plus a charismatic villain makes for a great movie period i still find myself tearing up a bit at SPOCK'S death especially as someone who grew up with the series . despite some serious obstacles i have to deal with , i'm always grateful to be here Thanks to you two lovely ladies Hannah and Toy for doing this sending love 🤗
I was 13 years old when Wrath of Khan came out and I had grown up with Star Trek-it was one of my two major obsessions as a youngster, for as far back as I can remember. I won a free pass to see a sneak preview of the movie a week before it went into general release, so I was super excited to get to see it (I still have the special edition poster I got as part of the prize). When Spock died, I was devastated. I had never cried at a movie before, but I bawled by eyes out in the theatre. It was like losing a member of the family. So yeah, I can relate to the feeling you were going through at the end of the film. Great reaction!
I saw this in the theater. Before this movie released in the theaters, Leonard Nimoy had already gone public stating his contemplation on maybe retiring his acting career as Spock. The death of Spock was a very big concern for all Spock fans. Plus, we had no idea if the Star Trek movie franchise would even continue. With that said, ST: TOS movies do continue onward to 6 movies total, and then there are ST:TNG movies after them.
Leonard Nimoy didn't want to be Spock anymore. His only condition for returning for Star Trek II was for his character to be killed off. Saavik was created and written to replace Spock.
The boy who dies after Khan's attack is Ike Eisenmann, famous for playing the twin Tony in Disney's Escape to Witch Mountain. His screen sister, Kim Richards, was on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
You can’t just terraform any old rock planet, and it’ll be habitable! It has to be a distance from a star for relative temperatures to earth’s, same size and gravity of earth so you don’t get crushed/ flattened. Less gravity might be fun if you’d like to jump higher/ float, weigh less… Altitudes have to be low, so the air is breathable. Basically, you have to re-create earth for humans to survive on it.
According to legend, the Mutara Nebula is the origin of the civilization on a world in orbit of a dying star who made their way across the vastness of space to a new life on our planet Earth. The planet Sasqua in Orion was the original home of the Sasquatch people who were driven to extinction by the Neanderthals and early Humans. Do alien Sasquatch still live in Siberian caves? We will find out on this episode of 'In Search of...'.
Some people who see this movie for the first time think Spock's death was a gimmick, but no, Nimoy did not like making TMP and only agreed to be in this film if they killed him off. What happens after that is another story, but for all intents and purposes he was gone for good after this movie.
The brilliance of this movie is that, despite his death, the villain wins. Detonating the Genesis Device kills Spock, thus avenging the death of his wife, which was his primary goal.
This film was amazing from start to finish. COMPLETELY different tone than the first one! What a rollercoaster. I like the different uniforms. It felt like a Navy movie. Even the music. I guess thats what they were going for. Such a sad ending!
KHANNN!!!!!!! Ricardo Montalban had a huge career that spanned over 50 years. In 2013 I realized that Ricardo is 10x the actor Benedict Cumberbatch is.
Oh, we all cried at the end of this one when I was a kid watching it. What an ending! Having watched the reruns of the original series on TV, I was a prime audience for the movies.
I've heard that, a few months ahead of the release, someone leaked that Spock would die. Leonard Nimoy had grown tired of the role, and requested a way out. But by the end of filming, he had begun to reconsider, and he agreed to direct the next two sequels. Some have speculated that it was Roddenberry himself who leaked it, angry that he didn't have as much creative control over this film as he did the previous one. Spock's "death" was added to the training simulator scene, so that audiences would be thrown off the scent, and could again be properly shocked when he really died.

The CGI Genesis sequence was created by Pixar (when it was owned by Lucasflim LTD before it was sold to Disney).
Wrath of Khan was also one of the first instances of computer hacking in film when Spock hacked into Reliant's computer to lower its shields.
And now just a few decades after that the quantum computers are about to break the 128 bit encryption on my 21st century bank account, but Starfleet ships have a 5 digit code 😏
...which makes it occur to me, maybe they should do a Spaceballs reaction (no spoilers why I say that 😅)
I saw this in the theaters when I was 8 years old, and when it was over, I could hear sobbing around me.
I felt the same. I was so distracted. Her blankie needs to be hidden from her in the next movie. Lol.
Ya Hannah acts like she is coked up....😬
Seriously, were drugged consumed prior to this reaction? wtf
@@jefmay3053 and the heavy breathing and obsession with brain worms throughout the movie.
This movie is a follow up to the Star Trek episode Space Seed.

you loved how they laughed and giggled through the whole thing, even the deaths and spocks last words?
@@maestro998 Some people deal with stress by laughing.
Some people love to have a whinge. Here you are.
We are glad that you recovered from your stroke all those years ago and now we have you here as part of the Run to the Movies family.

Incredible movie. I saw it when I was seven and the music still gets me. In the top five soundtracks
This movie was on cable SO much in the 80's that I practically memorized the entire movie at the time.
Same same, I know like 90 percent of the dialogue by heart, my favorite Star Trek movie.
In Vienna there was a cinema who constantly ran this movie like almost into 1996 - when it closed
HBO in 1984...a constant loop of this, Wargames, Ten to Midnight and Porky's.

I always thought he should have been a Bond villain. Probably during the Roger Moore era.
@robfinlay8058 very true
12:15 to 13:15 Ricardo may be a bit melodramatic in this movie, but boy does Toy sound like she's in the throes of ecstasy.
that isn't a bad thing.. beautiful, named Toy, and making those noises "it's inside of me"
I took a shot every time Hannah straightened her hair or adjusted her blanket. 5 bottles of Scotch and 3 livers later I've gone blind.
😂

You two are very fascinated about the earworms! 🤣
They weren't pets. :)
I’ve seen the movie a hundred times and have the same reaction.
I thought it was a bit of a cop out that Chekhov's earworm just happened to remove itself at an opportune moment. They could have at least made it seem like McCoy had to remove it.
"Tongue Worm-Looking Thing" was the name of my punk band in college! 😮
Before making this movie. Ricardo Montalban rewatched Space Speed from the original series. So he could get back into character. Also, Shatner and Ricardo never saw each other on set due to Ricardo doing Fantasy Island at the same time.
Ladies forgive me but you need to learn your Shakespeare

Toy and Hannah look dreamy in this one! And, I couldn't do the Vulcan symbol with my left hand, at first. But, back in 1986, when I was eight, I held my left hand in that position for like three hours, and now I can do it easily with both hands! lmao. 🤣

Thanks for watching with us! It must have been quite something in the theater.

When I saw this movie, there wasn't a dry eye in the place. And a lot of folks were like "no F-ing way."
We didn't believe it!! 😭
I don't know ladies, Genesis is a pretty goddamn great rock band! Nice reaction by the way.
Also a reasonably successful 16-Bit Sega console.
37:14.....Kirk always had a knack for pushing Khan's buttons! He always knew just how to get under his skin! 😂
I was with you until you mentioned Bill Gates bc and the WHO wanting to “depopulate” the world. That’s a straight up BS conspiracy theory.
It is inaccurate to say that Kirk has never faced death like this. He lost his brother Sam, many members of his crew and watching Edith Keeler die who he loved- but had to let it happen. True, Spock was special, but Kirk HAS faced some serious deaths.
Well, not only was Spock special but Kirk has spent most of his life around him at this point. He's spent more of his life around Spock than Sam.
Yeah, that always bugged me. He faced death a number of times throughout his career.

I think it's worth noting that Star Trek has so many alien worlds that Chekov's ship is actually struggling to find a planet without life
The way Nimoy says "We are now entering the Mutara Nebula", all I could think of was...
In Search Of... The Mutara Nebula 😃
Every time Scotty's nephew dies, my eyes tear up.
Saavik showed so much emotion because she was half-Romulan, and not raised on Vulcan.
3:00 IT WAS A TACO BELL COMMERCIAL!!! 😂😂😂. I found it! They were saying "carne" lol
What do you think goes through RFK's mind when he watches the brain worm scenes from this movie?
