I learned how to creat the ridged spiral braid years ago, but now I want to show my granddaughter, so I had to relearn the process. Thank you for your clear tutorial.
Thank you so much for all the tutorials. I'm just starting to learn how to do kumihimo and have watched tutorials from several different sources. I can say that for me, yours are the most concise and easiest to understand. I have been using doubled up strands of embroidery floss.
Easy to follow tutorial and really like this ridged braid. I tried to understand the logic of where the strands end up in the braid so I could make a small change, but I think I may have made a mistake in the first part of the braid. Regardless it came out looking fine, but not how I wanted it. I think I know what went wrong, so I will try to make it again and see how it turns out this time.
New subscriber as you make it all make sense to me and I am going to get more adventurous with my braiding. I also plan to get your disc and book too. Thank you for doing to easy and clear tutorials.
Thank you so much for a great tutorial, I have just finished my braid in satin cord and it has come out really well, I am so pleased with the result and keen to try some more of your tutorials, keep them coming, and thank you again :)
Hi Pru--just wanted to chime in on this project--first of all, thanks for sharing it with us. I just finished with my first attempt at making this braid--and am very pleased with the outcome. My was made with two different shades of blue and a black, 1mm rat tail. I had to begin this twice because, as I found out, you really need to pay close attention to your tension!! Even after you mentioned it in the video, I guess I had to see for myself!! This was a lot of fun to do, and as soon as I can gather more cording, I will make many more. Again, thank you.
Am very new to kumihimo and your tutorials are so well explained and easy to follow. I tried this ridged braid today but mine seems to just look like a three colour spiral as opposed to a ridged. I've watched and re-done a number of times but the ridged still doesn't stand proud - any suggestions to where I am going wrong please.
Can someone explain something for me? Is there something special that makes the ridge colour more 3D? A different textile? Pru mentions to watch the tension on the ridge cord - is that looser or tighter? (I'm assuming looser which is why you need longer cords?)
This is not the regular round braid and it all comes down to the structure of the braid. The moves are slightly different for the ridge cords so that they go across the point where the braid forms, while the other cords go to each side. This makes the ridge stand out. In the video I suggest using different coloured cords to make this easier to get right.
Hi Pru I just wondered about a beaded version of this braid. Have you tried this and if so what is the best place for the placement of the beads. Thanks
Hi Sarah, You can either have beads on the ridge cords or on the cords in the middle. There are examples of both methods at the bottom of the page on this link, prumihimo.com/resources/braiding-with-beads/

great video (once again). May I just ask, can I do zig zag with this? I mean change direction of the spiral mid-braid?
Yes I believe you can, but I have not actually tried it myself.

Fantastic tutorial, thank you!
Thank you.
I love it.. What is name of thread please?!
It is satin cord, also sold as Rattail. It feels lovely and silky.
Very nice braid very easy, however the video is not perfect this time.Too much movement and losing the center focus.
