      You don't want to be too unaerodynamic though because otherwise you would decelerate too fast and build up too much heat destroying the capsule. As I understand it re-entry capsuals are actually quite aerodynamic at those speeds, dealing with a shockwave of air rather than normal airflow changes things quite drastically.

    • @chaosmkmk
      @chaosmkmk 4 года назад +2

      Not only are they decently aerodynamic to ensure that friction doesn't cause then to get too hot, but it also aids in control. Having a non-aerodynamic pod would cause you to spin and tumble out of control very quickly.

    If 74million N of force doesn't make sense for a humanoid to create, forceful enough to basically kill in one hit (like the power of a rocket) and as you've already covered, Captain Falcon is wearing gloves... What if his gloves are coated with a fairly flammable/combustible substance which is what ignites the Falcon Punch? Chlorine Trifluoride for example is able to set fire to almost anything by mere contact, so if Captain Falcon's gloves are coated in a layer of flouride under the Chlorine Triflouride applied, he is safe from the usual chemical reactions but any of his unsuspecting foes become easy, combustible targets for the falcon punch. As a sidenote, maybe that's why his suit also shields his eyes - some of the reaction this chemical causes releases gas that is known to damage the eyes.
    Regardless, excellent episode as usual! :)

    • @89ludeawakening1
      @89ludeawakening1 4 года назад +22

      Only one problem, this theory is instantly debunked by the punch itself. If his gloves were coated in a flammable substance then they would continue to burn after ignited. If anything his gloves are very flame retardant because the flames are extinguished right after he executes the punch.

    • @kerrynoir4129
      @kerrynoir4129 4 года назад +15

      @@89ludeawakening1 While I accept the idea in general, I don't think I was clear enough. What I meant to say was that perhaps his gloves have flouride as a coating and the chlorine triflouride on top of that. This is actually how this substance is stored - you coat the container with flouride on the inside for the CT to not react with the container itself. But yeah, I should've probably rearranged my comment to make it clearer.

    • @GreyThing1337
      @GreyThing1337 4 года назад +16

      @@kerrynoir4129 That actually makes more sense, that is why he has to spend so long on the wind up as he's secretly applying the flouride coating. Then once he punches it will burn off the flame retardant gloves. This way he also doesn't break every bone in his arm shoulder and much of his body buy throwing a punch with such force. The game f-zero might give some credence to being able to travel at high Gs but would not explain why he wouldn't be destroyed by Newton's Third Law upon contact.

    @IgneusDei2 4 года назад +21

    Great video, Kyle, as always!
    Two thoughts. First, because of equal and opposite reactions, Captain Falcon's body would have to be able to withstand the force of accelerating his fist to that ludicrous speed. Furthermore, that same force would need to be transferred to the ground beneath him, so he would need some solid footing to even get the punch moving. Alternatively, he would have to be incredibly massive everywhere besides his arm to prevent his body from recoiling during the punch. This seems more plausible since a Falcon Punch can be made falling through the air.
    The second point is related to the end of the punch. You described the force imparted supposing the punch lands, but the Falcon Punch is one of the most telegraphed moves in the game. What if he misses? Suddenly, all that force is distributed across his arm as the tensile strength of his bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons fight to stop the fist at the moment of full extension. If his arm couldn't handle those stresses, he might shoot off his arm, either tearing from the shoulder or shredding the whole darn thing, in a suborbital trajectory. It this is a risk, then it would behoove Captain Falcon to resist the temptation to... show us his moves!

    Here is how you get into footnotes:
    Love your show Kyle, been watching for a year and watched all the old episodes. Blessed be Argan oil. You are the perfect combination of brains, beauty, and brawn.
    Now, here is some math:
    When you “break wind”, the mass of that is 0.0371 grams or 0.0000371 kilograms and the sun is 1.989 x 10^30 kilograms, so the sun has the same mass as 5.361186 x 10^34 blasts from behind.
    7.7 billion people in the world, at an average of 14 “events” per day, gives you 107,800,000,000 wind breaking events per day. 3.9347 x 10^13 per year. So multiply that by 13.7 billion years and you get 5.390539 x 10^23 of these that we would produce in the length of the universe.
    So, you divide the number of flatulence occurrences that the sun is composed of by the number we can produce in one universe: (5.361186 x 10^34) / (5.390539 x 10^23)
    And you get: 99,455,471,892.5 universal timespans for the current population to boom boom out the mass of the sun.

      Very good point, and would there be enough time for the air to get super heated before the end of his punch to cause such a fire? The reason why it happens to space ships is that they go from the vaccuum of space to trying to penetrate the atmosphere of a rotating planet, it's not sudden combustion like the falcon punch is. [Or for Kirby Mains the Pinecone Punch.] It takes time to re-enter and the temperature builds up over that time.

    Hi Kyle,
    Huge fan of the show and love how much I learn from watching you.
    I have some issues on the data you're using to make your hypothesis.
    Firstly, in the n64 version the flame falcon does appear in a single frame but C.Falcon is indeed charging the energy before releasing it. It's visible by the yellow glow he emits and this is even more visible in the latest smash game where energy is concentrating on his fist before being released. So we can assume that the flames are not only produced by his velocity but also some kind of energy released when he hits.
    Another thing is you're only considering his falcon punch move but his other moves also emit flames. If we focus on the falcon kick it's instantly igniting when used so I think we can assume that the suit he's wearing has more to do with the flames than his actual speed.
    And to prove that further let's compare the falcon kick to another character's move, lucario's extreme speed. When performed simultaneously, lucario is moving faster than C.Falcon so if the smash physics apply to all the characters he should burn as well. However he doesn't so it proves that C.Falcon's flames are not a result of his speed but produced by his gear.
    And last point but it's more trivia, according to your "why you don't want superstrenght" video, if C.Falcon was to hit his opponents with that much force, he should be crushed instantly on impact. So either way he doesn't punch them that strongly or because video games.

    Hi! Awesome episode, like always! :D I have a correction about the part with force calculation. It is allright, but assuming that the entire kinetic energy is deposited into the opponent being hit (going into their elastic and plastic deformation, catastrophic failure and so on, from engineering jargon). I believe though, that the fist at this high momentum would just smash straight through the target. Maybe it would need an actual calculation, but hey - just imagine a 15cm wide cannonball coming at you. Maybe we also have to assume that the targets are super tough? Would make sense, actually!

    Hey Kyle! this is defiantly off topic but I was skimming through some of your old videos and I had a couple (2) ideas.
    1: the first one is about telekinesis. I know you don't like telekinesis because you don't understand how it could work, but hear me out for a second because I think you answered your own question without even realizing it. In many of your Thor's hammer episodes you attribute many of it's properties to the ability to manipulate theoretical gravitation particles. In my estimation if you gave a person a similar ability somehow, they would be able to manipulate objects in any way they wanted by altering how much gravity affects an object in reason to other objects in it's environment. Now this raises intriguing complications about lifting massive object by playing fast and loose with gravity. however increasing a persons own gravity until they turn into a black hole is certainly a interesting prospect.
    2: I want to talk about laser bee's, as you where doing a "not" super villain phone call you offhandedly mentioned dispatching a unsuspecting victim by utilizing laser bee's. HOWEVER, as I am myself an aspiring super villain I just had to know how possible a swarm bee's equipped with DEADLY LASERS are. Assuming we can hookup bees with electronics that could control and coordinate there actions ( I mean we can already control the moment of a cockroach with a smartphone so it doesn't seem to unlikely) the real question here is can we equip a bee with a DEADLY LASER that is small and light enough for it to lift. This begs the question of exactly how deadly we want the laser to be. Well assuming your going to be controlling a entire nest (around 20,000 to 50,000 bee's I believe) of bee's, as I'd think you'd want to if not only for the pure intimidation value, I don't think each bee needs a laser that's necessarily a parented kill shot. According to the brief amount of googling I did, I can't definitively say what the exact energy output of a laser would have to be, but I did find that given the laser your using would necessarily have to have a very small area of contact, and you can find some terrifyingly small laser engravers (not to mention the dangerous as hell lasers you can just extract from a laser disk player). If you use a high frequency wavelength for the laser, it wouldn't have to be all that big or powerful to have it do some damage. However we run into a problem with the bee's themselves, an average female worker bee (the ones you'd most likely be using) can carry up to there own body weight in extra mass in flight... which is about 90mg (.0000198416 pounds). Sadly that is much less than any laser that I could find during my quick search. Maybe we can make robot bees?
    Oh yea actually pertaining to the episode, flaming fist are cool, but how fast would he have to punch if he wanted to heat up the air enough to CAUSE A CHAIN REACTION THAT TURNS THE ATMOSPHERE INTO A FLAMING BALL OF PLASMA!!!

    Hi Kyle! Huge fan of the show. I discovered your videos on Nerdist about a month ago and couldn't stop watching. I've since binged every because science you've released. I'm rather sad I have to wait for new videos now... loved the episode makes me wonder what the most scientifically overpowered character in super smash bros is.
    In a previous because science live a listener ask if you could explain why "pink isn't a color". You didn't seem to know what they were talking about at the time and since this is one of my favorite science facts I thought I'd share.
    I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.
    As you probably know we see color through the use of three types of cone cells in our eyes interacting with photons of visible light in 380-740nm range. These three cone cells, s-cones m-cones and l-cones, each react with different intensities to ranges of the light spectrum. In order to decode colors our eyes use the ratios between the cone's intensities. For example when yellow light enters our eyes the m-cones react with a medium high intensity while the l-cones react with a high intensity and our brain interprets this as "yellow". This is a bit of an oversimplification of a beautiful process but it will do for this explanation.
    While this system is very effective it has a side effect, color "ghosting". When light of two different wavelengths enter our eyes they can cause the cones to react with intensities imitating the ratio of one color. To use yellow as an example again, if green light causing the m-cones to react with a medium high intensity and red light causing the l-cones to react with high intensity enters our eyes at the same time our eyes will see the same ratio and interpret the interaction as "yellow". This is how monitors use red green and blue pixels to display a wide range of colors.
    Magenta, pink, and some shades of purple are created by this effect. We call these non-spectral colors. When both low wavelength blue and high wavelength red light hit our cones at the same time the resulting ratios between the s-cones and l-cones are interpreted as single colors even though no single wavelength of light could cause that ratio. And hence we see magenta (or pink) when no such light exists.
    I think that flat out saying, "pink isn't a color" is going too far. Isn't a color a way to communicate what we see in our minds not a wavelength of light? But it is true that that there is no pink light. Pink is only a shared optical illusion.
    Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Kyle, I love watching the show; always fascinating.
    Of course while I think we all know that it's impossible for a human to actually be able to accelerate any part of our body to the speed needed to produce a falcon punch, there is at least one key factor that can have a massive impact on how quickly someone is able to move their arm, leg, etc. That factor can be where on the acting limb the muscle connects. Every muscle in the human body has an origin and insertion point and where that insertion point it will affect the speed at which the limb can move. If a muscle, say the biceps, inserts farther down on the forearm it will be able to contract and cause a much faster movement as opposed to inserting closer to the elbow.
    If Captain Falcon were to more realistically be able to generate enough speed to generate a flaming punch, his pectoralis major would need to insert essentially at his elbow which could make him look like he would have webbing like a sugar glider.
