  • With all six Infinity Stones and a snap of the fingers, Thanos achieved his goal of wiping out half the life in the universe. While those who got dusted appeared to be random, is there actually a scientific explanation to how the Infinity Gauntlet determined everyone's fate? Some people move on, but not Kyle in this week's episode of Because Science!

      2. Reality Dust people
      3. Space reaches across the universe
      4. Soul stone does the counting of half the universe
      5. Time stone lasts the effect of time across all eternity putting the net number of population exactly half throughout the years so that he won't have to snap every 10 - 100 years
      6. Mind stone allows thanos to telepathically connect to the stones to ensure the process is flawless. Thats how he might have ended up in the soul world for a few seconds

So who gets dusted?? "Zeroes" or "ones"? What'd be funny, and ironic, is if when Thanos initiated the Snappening he was also one the ones that got dusted... but thatd make for a much less exciting and probably extremely short "End Game". Unless the Gauntlet is way harder to use then it looks without training or whatever Instruction and Technical Manuel that Thanos read and then left playing around somewhere

Love the show but you left out some stones. It feels better to include everyone!
*Here is why ALL the stones are needed to make the snappening work:*
Power stone - An overcharged battery to allow the other stones to work harder.
Soul Stone - Locates life forms
Mind Stone - To discern whether the life form qualifies to be snapped (i.e. Not plants) and tethers Thanos to the Gauntlet and the stones to precisely portray his snapping intentions.
Space Stone - Used to boost the stones' range to reach all of space.
Reality Stone - Creates the random assignments once the mind stone qualifies the life form by pulling from quantum mechanical values. Breaks physics down and ERASES the life forms from existence, not just disintegrate
Time Stone - Used in conjunction with the Reality stone and Mind stone to hit all of the universe at once instead of a shockwave of lightspeed death (which would be slow across the universe scale)

Mind stone allows total access to all minds as well as control. It doesn't impart knowledge except by the mentioned methods. Reality controls the existence of things. The stones have only power over what they are named after, but complete authority over it. This is because the stones are the physical remains of the entity that died and became all that there is excluding The One Above All. They are control panels for the aspect of the universe they are in, but can effect any universe so long as they are in their home one. The only thing they cannot do is destroy one another. The gauntlet has no powers or abilities usually. If it does, it is almost always just a defense buff or something to protect the user.

I agree! With true randomness, it could be possible for an entire planet to lose all its life, while another one remains untouched. It may have been based on physical location, in which case it defines some sort of area or volume, and then gives everyone in that space a random death value. Then you have to ask how large or small those volumes are. The size of a whole planet? One cubic kilometer? Who knows? What if it runs into an area with only one living thing?

I just talked about this on a different video earlier this week. It shouldn't work like a coin flip (random number generator giving a 0 or 1) for each individual. The problem with it being a true random number generator (which can only be proven by method, not by results, as any result can be a random result) is that it would be extremely unlikely for the results to be exactly 50%. Yes, as the sample size gets larger the higher probabilities tend to get close to half, but the odds of them being exactly half get worse and worse. To illustrate this, the odds of getting 1 heads and 1 tails in 2 coin flips is exactly 50%. Move up to 4 coin flips, and the odds of getting half heads and half tails (2 each) drop to 37.5%. With 10 flips, the odds of getting exactly half heads and half tails drop to around 25%. I'm sure you see the pattern here. So, if Thanos actually wanted to knock out 50% of the population, random generation is not the way to go (especially considering there remains the possibilities of knocking out 100% or 0% or any amount between). What Thanos actually needs the gauntlet to do is consider the size of the population and generate the exact same amount of zeroes as ones and then randomly arrange those ones and zeroes to determine who lives and who dies. Each individual would still have a 50% chance of being dusted, but there would be a 100% chance of getting exactly half of the people.

So,I don't believe the gauntlet would need to generate, assign, and dust in less than 7 seconds for two main reasons: First, it takes about 20 seconds between snapping and the first shown dust (Bucky); Secondly, not everyone gets dusted in the same time, some get dusted after others. So, considering it all, it does all the necessary calculations in, relatively speaking, the same amount of time the Quintessence does or even more time.

    Hey Kyle, fun episode!
Small addendum - you said the Gauntlet completed the snap using only two stones (Mind and Power), which I believe would be incorrect, since if he only needed 2, Thanos would have gone after Vision immediately after getting the Space Stone from Thor.
My guess: the Mind stone identifies which beings are capable of being snapped (sentient enough to interface with the Mind stone), the Power stone does the dusting, the Space stone extends the effect across the known universe (as well as extends the scope of the Mind stone's checks), the Reality stone makes the effect permanent (as opposed to Drax and Mantis becoming blocks and ribbons temporarily as seen in Infinity War), the Time stone is the processing power generating the random numbers (possibly generating the number instantaneously based on an infinite sequence of digits of the current minute/second etc), and the Soul Stone is the repository for the dusted souls (ala Gamora in Infinity War).

No, the dusting is very clearly not all simultaneous. Otherwise Fury couldn't have noticed some weird traffic, gotten out of his car to find another car with an empty driver's seat, watched the person who was with him dust, watched a helicopter crash, and grab his pager all before he started dusting.

The results of the snap weren't instantaneous, we were only shown snapshots (ho yeah) of the dusting - but what we were shown took time. This lag could be the time it takes for the gauntlet to calculate and assign the random snaptasticness.

So, one thing that’s been bugging me for a while (as much as I love the MCU) is that for Thanos’ plan to do what he wants, the snap couldn’t be truly random (at least not across the whole universe). Kyle talked about how what we think of as random isn’t always quite right, true randomness allows for clumps of data that we wouldn’t necessarily expect, which means that, depending on the size and number of inhabited planets in the MCU, whole planets, and maybe even galaxies could be destroyed (or on the other hand, spared) which would kind of defeat the ultimate purpose behind Thanos’ plan.
I don’t claim to be an expert on this, and maybe I’m missing something but I just had to say it.

    @Kyle
Once again enjoyed your show quite a bit and appreciate the amount of work you put into infotaining us!
Though i do have a couple of things i want to point out.
    Concerning your coin flip analogon:
Only effects that influence the outcome towards a random direction statistically cancel each other out and yield a stable 50/50 distribution (within a margin of error) if you increase the sample size far enough. If effects are present that always influence the outcome towards the same direction and these effects don't perfectly cancel each other out (for example how the coin is made), you will also get a stable distribution if you increase the sample size enough, but it will not neccessarily be 50/50.
Also truely random distribution wouldn't be recommendable, because the high number and limited size of samples (the population of a specific creature in a specific area) would result in some areas left devoid of any population while other popultions are literally untouched.
Therefore i would propose the theory that the gauntlet prior to the "dusting" forms ("equal") pairs of the affected populations, choosing a partner for each individual through either geographical or emotional proximity or any other methode. And then randomly dusts one of the pair.

Hey Kyle! Huge fan of the show and I appreciate you for combining my loves of science and nerdiness! I believe the glove doesn't instantaneously decide the universes fate. I disagree with your assessment on how the stones were used.
Mindstone maybe creating the randomness. But it would also be identifying intelligent life. Thanos doesn’t want to eliminate resources.
Time and space are obvious to reach the entire universe at about the same time. I agree there.
But it’s not power that dusts them. It’s Reality Stone that can change them from fleshy stuff to dust in the wind. Similar to what Thanos did to Drax and Mantis on Knowwhere.
But to keep them from being living, intelligent dust in the wind. He needs the Soul Stone to separate their souls from their matter.
Finally that just leaves the Power Stone. Which is used to enhance and power up the rest of the stones to reach the infinite reaches of the universe and affect everything.

2: What if the infinity gauntlet used the information in Thanos' mind to seed the RNG? For instance, he specifically mentions that he's sparing Tony after their fight. We also know that Thanos is aware of some of the other Avengers and the Mind Stone could have even drawn information from Stark's brain which is why things seem to be dusted so evenly based on their powers.
For Instance; Black Panther & Captain America are both chemically imbued with strength, stamina & toughness from a plant and are both national symbols of pride and strong leaders which is why one is still around and one got dusted. Falcon lacks superpowers just like Hawkeye does and only one of them made it out of the snap too. If you want to have fun with it Tony could have been worrying about Peter triggering a rule in the RNG which took Spiderman out of the generic "Humans" category and putting him into the much smaller pool of "arthropod themed superheroes."
I think this is a detail a lot of people missed in the Russo's decision to determine who among the Avengers and those adjacent to them survived the snap. While there are a lot of individuals missing the overall balance of the team is still there.

Quantum immortality is a problematic idea, philosophically, and ultimately relies on a misinterpretation of what an 'observation' is. Consciousness is not required to perform an observation, only interaction with a system that resolves differently based on quantum-mechanical factors.
Even if we suppose a 'Many Worlds' interpretation of quantum mechanics, there is nothing requiring 'your' consciousness experience to be on a world where 'you' continue to exist, for which not the least of reasons being that we have no clear indication of what 'consciousness' actually is.
Now, given that Souls actually exist as a provable thing in the MCU, we can probably assume that 'your consciousness' is tied to your soul, at least in that universe. However, if the Soul somehow 'picks' which alternate universe to experience along after every quantum branch point, by necessity, after a finite amount of time, you would functionally be the only person with a soul in the universe you inhabit, as everyone else's souls would have ended up in other parallel universes through previous decision points. I don't think the MCU wants to imply that it is full of Philosophical Zombies, beings that appear and act as though they are conscious people with internal lives, but which actually have no 'soul' or true consciousness; as such, the MCU's implementation of alternate universes can't by the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum physics, but instead some other cosmological Multiverse theory unrelated to quantum probabilities.
Doesn't seem like there's a good way out of that.

just want to point out that not everyone gets dusted at the same time, so my suggestion to solve this problem would be that as soon as you are assigned your fate, if your fate is to be dusted, you get dusted. And so since it takes time for everyone to be assigned, people who are assigned first will be dusted before people who are assigned last, eg. person 1 will be dusted before person 1,000,000.

One could result in less or more than half the total life in the universe remaining, and the other could result in the extinction of entire species. So a few notes:
The stones were what created and fuel all life and existence (outside of a few very cases from other dimensions and such) so each life is tracked by the stones
In the movies the deaths actually seemed to happen over a several second to couple minute time frame which give the gauntlet time to be calculating
Another option based on both of these is that the gauntlet chose a random string of actions, and for each one (half the value of life in total) the first being to count for it’s scenario for each part got dusted
The stones themself release constant energy in a natural fashion that is tied to all existence, it could just take all the waves and a spot on the glove and monitor for when/where the waves converge as number creation
Due to the fact that it seems like it was about 1/2 of the humans but also other races got hit and all, im guessing that it may actually be that using the time stone it went back to the dawn of each specie then followed it up the branches, at each and every branch it chose one of the two new paths, even on dead paths it still just randomly chose 0 or 1 and that person (if still alive) got dusted before going to the next part
Technically since the stones exist since creation but also can travel to any point of time or space and are to a degree sentient then they likely already know every action that will happen and has happened and any point and thus pre-calculated whom would be dusted by placing a random 1 or 0 on each existence at birth, or even at that rate not do a random one but just alternate so all of life would already be divided in 2

The shuffle player on your device either plays song at _random_ or thru a _bobble sort._ If it plays at random, then it generates a _random_ number based on the number of tracks you have available and play that track, repeating the sequence after each song finishes.
If it uses a _bobble sort_, then after in generates a random number, it compares the number to a matrix table to see if the song has already been played. If it has already been played, it generates a new number and compares that to the matrix table, continuing the process until it generates a number that hasn't been used and plays that song. Once all the songs have been played, all the values in the matrix table are cleared before generating the next random number, and the entire process starts anew.

While I like the logic, and especially the way you wrote that, it's not actually true.
Consider a rigid pole of length 6x10^8 m (Ie. the distance light can travel in 2 seconds). If I were to push one end of this pole, the other end would move the same amount instantaneously -- as it is a rigid body. Thus, the pole can be used to transmit information faster than light.
The reason this is the case is that information is an inherently abstract thing. Not simply because it cannot be held/seen/etc, but because it doesn't actually exist -- it's a human fabrication to explain the world around us, just like maths. It is only that which does exist -- be it photons, or matter, or my cat -- that is confined to travel at or below the speed of light.
Similarly, there exists a phenomenon called quantum entanglement, where the state of one particle is entirely dependent upon another irregardless of distance. You can consider these particles the two ends of the pole -- they are either pushed or not pushed. If one is pushed, then so, too, is the other. The same is true if one is not pushed.

If this were the case then the snap would not effect the entire universe. Because space itself is expanding objects with enough distance between them are moving away from each other faster than the speed of light. Thus the effects of the snap, moving at light speed, would never be able to catch up to any lifeforms past a certain distance. Given current estimates of the size of the actual universe and rate of expansion the effects of the snap would probably be pretty insignificant overall.

  • @aflacduck2
    @aflacduck2 5 лет назад +19

You assumed the process would be instant. But in the movie, we do not see everyone turn to dust at the same time. It happens over time. So it could be possible the gauntlet is not truly random.
Also a truly "balanced" universe would require a non-random event. If balance is the goal, you would need to know everything about everything and start calculating a zero-sum outcome. If you used a random event then the outcome will not be perfectly balanced. Let's say you have 2 warring factions, 1 bigger than the other. A random event would not be able to differentiate who's on what side as well as the individual worth of every being. If you randomly kill off half of the total sum of the 2 factions, you change the tide of the war no matter what but was the war balanced prior to the snap and will the snap make it balanced? Is this in line with being in balance? Thanos never really defines what he means by in balance other than for some odd reason there's just too many people alive.
A big hole in "perfectly" balanced is himself. He himself is MASSIVELY powerful but was there ever a 50% chance he himself was going to get dusted? If not, then that makes everything unbalanced from the get go if it's going to affect everyone but himself using a random event. So it can never be random if Thanos was never at risk of dusting himself while attaining perfect balance.

    • @LyneaSilver
      @LyneaSilver 5 лет назад

I agree with your points here, but I'm not so sure everyone seems to understand what Thanos is talking about when he speaks of "balance". His goal isn't to balance populations, wars, etc. The balance he is striving for is between people and the universe. Or in a sense that is a little more down-to-earth, balance between people and "mother nature". The whole point of the snap is to prevent famine, strife, etc. due to a lack of natural resources because of an overpopulation of the universe. A "balance" in the petty squabbles of mortals (like war, for example) is not Thanos' concern. So it should also not be a concern of ours when we're trying to figure out what Thanos is trying to accomplish with the snap.

    • @stilmaho
      @stilmaho 5 лет назад

I keep mentioning this everywhere but erasing the half of a population will delay that point where natural resources won't be enough anymore by only 50 to 80 years. And that is assuming that the people will not instictively or logically try to boost population by having a lot of kids. And that is only for humans. There must be other species that will increase their numbers in a much higher rate.
But lets assume that our population is on the faster side and in avarage it takes a 1000 years for the population of the entire universe to double itself. That means Thanos delayed the end he fears by 1000 years which is still seconds for our 13.8 billions year old universe.
The only way for Thanos provide the true balance would be removing all life forms but even then there is no guarantee that new lifes won't start in a couple million years which may or may not result in a similar situation in a couple billion years. That is, again, not as long as you may imagine since the universe may keep going for trillions of years. Before it's end.

Unfortunatly it's not tho. By assigning a value of 50% must survive, it breaks the randomness. Say you have 1000 people, starting at 1 you apply an RNG to decide the fate of each one. Its entirely possible for a true RNG to reach the 501st person and have already decided the 1st 500 die. Thus the remaining 500 no longer get judged by the RNG, as they must survive. I know this is a small sample size but expand it logically, you could reach the point were there is still a large portion of the universe that's not been judged by the RNG, but must all either die or survive based on the previous results.

Hey Kyle,. my nephew (who loves your show even more than I do) and me had a few thoughts/question:
So, assuming (as you covered) that
1). The mind stone would generate the string of random numbers (doing so instantly as it's an insanely powerful computational device as demonstrated throughout the comics and films).
2). The soul stone would then assign those numbers to every soul in the universe.
3). The power, space and reality stones then begin dusting each soul across the cosmos semi-simultaneously and of course making those dusting permanent
That leaves us with the time stone. What function do you think could this stone be performing as part of this process? Obviously Thanos needed the gauntlet in its entirety in order to execute the snap, and since there are plenty of ways to work-around the time it would take to snap the universe without having to exercise any control over time at all, I wonder what function(s) it could serve.

(I haven't seen Endgame) I always imagined Thanos had advanced knowledge of the Stones abilities and made his plan with them in mind. The Stones may be "infinitely powerful" in their defined roles, but couldn't do things outside of their perviews; i.e. create more resources for life in the universe, as people like to try to make fun of Thanos' plan. I don't think the Infinity Gauntlet is a magic wish granter, but that Thanos' plan was specifically tailored to its capabilities.
The Soul Stone finds all people (and animals?) in the universe, the Mind Stone allows Thanos to conceive of the impossibly huge number of targets, the Space Stone allows the Gauntlet to connect to them all, the Reality Stone binds all of their quantum functions to the Gauntlet, the Power Stone begins the process of dusting each one, and the Time Stone allows all of these (quadrillions?) of actions to all happen in the span of a snap (or several minutes).
Missing any one of the Six Stones would make the final plan impossible to pull off, and the Stones abilities allow for Thanos' quick fix to resource scarcity while other solutions may be outside of their influence.

Hi Kyle - love the show!
It seems to me that the main issue revolves around the snap being “fair”. As you say, we can assume that there is bias in the randomness if Thanos wants to stick around. Given Thanos’ desire to survive, as well as his claim that he wants this as a solution to the problem of mouths to feed, we can assert 2 things:
First - That he wants to be worshipped by the survivors as a God (this is further evidenced by the servile rhetoric of the Black Order).
Second - that he wants life to flourish in the wake of the snappening (no one wants to worship someone that made things worse).
Given the second assertion, we have to create additional biases in the dusting algorithm. If erasing an entire gender would be negative, we know that we’re creating sets and subsets of populations. Given that every characteristic is equal, they can be defined by binary “present”/“not present” values. Once assigned a characteristic profile, members of populations can be placed into antithetical groups. Each group can be entangled congruently with each other group and placed in a superposition. At the snap, the wave function would collapse and one of two randomly filled groups in each population would disappear; leaving behind a randomly selected, but necessarily diverse group behind.
Looking forward to the next episode!

Hey Kyle love the videos, first time commenting couple of little thought exercises,
First off, if the gauntlet randomly assigns 1s and 0s like you say, it wouldn't necessarily wipe out half of all life. For example if you flip a coin 1000 times you would expect roughly 500 heads and 500 tails but there's nothing to say you couldn't flip 1000 heads in a row, if there are infinite timelines maybe in one of them thanos accidentally wiped out all life because the gauntlet just happened to predict all 1s, or there's a time line where it was all zeroes and nothing happened, if you could go back in time and effect the probably generator you could stop it. Maybe the gauntlet randomly moves between lifeforms dusting them until it hits a quota.
Second, is there such a thing as true randomness? We assume electron movement and radioactive decay is random because we don't understand everything about these particles. I'm no physicist but isn't it feasible that one day in the future we could develop our understanding to be able to predict these processes
Thirdly and we are coming back to time travel, if the gauntlet was truly random, if you travelled back in time and thanos snapped his fingers again would all the same people be wiped out? If not then its only appearing random and is based on something physical

We tried to find an explanation, but we can't. Believe me, we tried, but everytime we tried, things get messier.
There's a very famous experiment called the quantum eraser experiment. Scientists found out that you can do the double slit experiment by firing a single particle (photons or electrons) at a time, at one of the slit randomly, and you would still get the interference pattern. This seems to signify that superposition DOES exist.
However, when the scientists put a sensor to basically tag which slit the particle actually came from (by using half-reflective mirrors and such), the interference pattern disappear. They just clump up like a normal particle going through a hole. Then they tried to delay the timing so that the sensor reads AFTER the particle landed on detector screen and the result is still NO interference pattern. One might think that it's because of the half-reflective mirrors they used, so they implemented an eraser, where they again, use half-reflective mirrors to feed the photons into both sensors, effectively destroying the data of which slit it came from, and the interference pattern re-emerges.
Tl;dr the experiment tell us that somehow, the act of observing destroys randomness, and the effect seems to be able to travel faster than the speed of light and even BACKWARDS IN TIME.

    P.s. love the show

      @saaddagoat 5 лет назад +2

The way I see it, the actual assigning of whether or not you get dusted is done extremely quickly and the moment you get assigned is when you get dusted. Considering that this is accounting for EVERY living being in the universe, I can understand why the whole process of assigning to EVERY creature takes about 20-30 seconds. That's why some people dusted before others.

Well, I'm probably late for the footnotes, but here's my take on the episode.
It doesn't need to be random to ensure a 50 50 result. On the top of my head I can think of a couple of easy solutions.
1st Starting from Thanos himself, check the distance to everything that's in the criteria to be eliminated (inteligent life, the dominant species of the planet, or whatever he chose), organize them in a list (with the power stone and the space stone you could ensure that you get enough precision so that there are no ties) and alternate one at the time if they die or not.
2nd Check the closest atom for everything to be checked and ask the first electron you encounter for their spin. You will get true random results.
3rd Count the amount of atoms in the organism. If odd, kill, if even, live. That should get good results too.
My point is that there's no need to make the calculations from an external source to get a good even result.
    Ps: I love your show

    • @MrDim1800

Also my head cannon is that the criteria for what lives or dies is just an intelligence check like "everythin with an IQ over 30" or something like that

    You forgot ONE BIG thing:
The snap dusts the half of EVERY species.
Meaning that 3.5 biljon humans got dusted..
But other species like the Asgardians which have a few hundred survivors at the end of Ragnarok have only half of those few hundred dusted.
And this goes with every species in the universe.
    The half of THEIR species.
This makes the RNG even harder.

Couple of things: It does have a delay in distribution of dusting, it's not instantaneous, even for space magic. Additionally, it's presumed that the soul stone "the stone that has a special wisdom" is used directly to determine what is random, presumably because it knows what is fair or unfair, again, space magic. This is especially important because the infinity guantlet uses "intuitive" magic, meaning, your intent is followed, regardless of whatever process might otherwise be "impossible" even within the bounds of magic and this is part due to it's ability to alter reality. We know it's intuitive to, because you don't have to be smart or a space wizard to wield the gauntlet with effectiveness, ie, it's not a genie lamp, you don't have to word your wish carefully.

For that end part... another possibility for how it could reach everyone at approximately the same time: he has the time stone. The signal could be sent back in time far enough to cancel out the time it would take to reach whatever it was going to hit.

So I wanted to say that this was a great video. I would like to alter your hypothesis and say the Trng starts the moment all 6 stones are United. The snap is kind of the primary ability of the gauntlet. So I logic dictates as soon as all of the stones are United the count begins automatically. So from that moment and leading into the snap is how long it took at least. Or the snap travels like a wave from a focal point and then travels through the universe

The Infinity Gauntlet doesn't have to generate random numbers fast at all, it can have a string of random numbers already generated and simply assign the numbers depending on distance from the wielder of the glove. Excluding Thanos from the culling doesn't make it non-random, it simply excludes him from the randomness and apply the numbers on any being within a certain distance but atleast a certain distance away from the wielder. Now, if you keep this in mind, just slide inside Thanos as he snaps and you'll be good.
