When I was a Union Cabinetmaker we would mix white glue with a little water and coat the veneer and the substrate with the mixture.Let both pieces dry completely then position the veneer and heat with a home iron. This works when you are going to finish the piece with a lacquer based finish. The lacquer would make the contact cement loosen and you would have a bubble. In your case with that small of a piece you would be fine. Hope this helps you and your viewers.
Hi Skyler! I just found your channel and I am so happy to see a fellow female woodworker! Your instruction is superb and I love how you share your thought process. Showing us your mistake and how you fixed it was awesome! Thank you, you have a new subscriber.
I've been watching RUclips videos for a few years now and I have to say yours have been the most helpful. So glade I found your channel. Unbelievable how much you have helped me. I really appreciate all the work you put into your videos. Thank you ,Thank you,💯🔥
Thank you for such a detailed video, appreciate you leaving all of the mistakes and tests in as well! For those not interested they can always skip ahead but for those who are starting out full, uncut, blooper reel vids like yours are a must!
I don't know if I'd be brave enough to video my mistakes, especially being a perfectionist. I applaud your courage. How you fixed the box was brilliant as well. Bravo!
Thank you, the truth is I wasn’t that brave. My first instinct was to cut out the mistakes. However the rest of the video wasn’t going to make sense without the mistakes and I would have have to scrape off the project. What you don’t see is after the mistake happens, I went upstairs, ate a snack, thought about it… then went back and continued:)

Hey Miss Sky! Next time (cutting the top free) put the box bottom against the fence and use your pusher block to shove it through. Do not put pressure in on the lid, just let it fall off on the last pass through the router. Great little box and excellent content. Thanks Sky!
It looks great! The veneer looks like 3 dimensional ocean waves when viewed from certain angles! Your workmanship (workwomanship?) is very high quality! Thanks for another great video!
Always excited to see your latest project and as always hot off the presses and still drying! : ). U R the Queen B of Boxes, always intoducing new features and designs. You definitely have a skill that you make easier than it looks and explain the how to wonderfully, ("Skyler's Miter Magic"). Can't say it enough I learn from your tutorials and appreciate your transparency of when things go unexpectedly, and how you deal with them to not get discouraged. No apologies ever needed for "one-man operation" as that's how we work too, and appreciate you including the safty tips! Your the Best Skyler, Thank you and glad you still have a warm shop to work in! Happy and prosperous 2024!
Awww, thank you so much for your kind comment and encouragement. I was debating if I should post this video but now I am glad I did and happy you enjoyed it. I definitely have a problem with the length of my videos, most times I feel that I talk too much and over explain so it looks like I am just babbling. But it’s a fine line that is hard to walk: I feel I need to explain my train of thought, yes, I should keep my videos short and simple….. Anyway, you see? Babbling again:) thank you again for your kindness and support

Skyler, this is an amazing box build! I like how you explained each step and how to correct missteps! Thanks for sharing this project! Have a Happy New Year!
Yes, I always learn from your videos as well. I would temporarily ad a couple of small boards to the inside of the box with double stick tape to hold what will be the two halves together and in place while routing that separating cut, or maybe it would be better to do the separating cut on the table saw as there is less that can go wrong with a blade cutting parallel to your cut as opposed to the spinning router blade pulling to the side. Make sense?
Love how well you explain the what’s and whys of your box projects. Simple request is can you include a link to the double blue tape dispenser you use. Tom
Very Good! A true master craftsmen(woman) is not someone who never makes mistakes, it is someone who knows how to fix their mistakes, so you don't know there there!
Really enjoyed the video and love how you managed to save a amazing little box. I watched a video not long ago where a guy made the top similar but used the table saw to cut. May I suggest when you cut the top off on the router put a shim in the cut the same size as the bit and tape it to prevent it from closing on you as you go around.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful box project. You handled the oop's very nicely. Looks great. Everyone stay safe, wai, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
@woodworkingwithSkyler thanks for experimenting and showing how to correct a mistake...there's always something to learn. You had narrow strips of the veneer leftover...could you cut small squares and laminate them together...maybe sandwich a piece of the hardwood inside for strength...and use those for the splines? I've yet to work with veneer or splines...trying to learn.
Beautiful box and nice recovery on the mistake. I definitely like the longer video and attention to detail and the mistakes on all the steps. You almost got by without saying "I don't have the patience to wait". LOL. 😄That should be your catch phrase from all your videos. I wouldn't mind seeing a video on your veneer. It was a little hard to follow along with the split screen trying to understand what you were saying and trying to match it up with the inset video. I'm sure you figured out the box collapse because of lack of support. Guy mentioned in earlier post to use scraps after you route out your groove to maintain the support. I was thinking getting some square dowels from one of the big box stores of various thickness to the size of your router bits; cut them to various lengths and keep in a pencil holder or something next to your router table. That way you will have them quick and handy to grab and insert into your groove to maintain support while you continue the lid. Nice choice choosing the maple over the walnut for the splines. Definitely gives it some contrast. Have considered or tried using a touch brass to accent it?
Love the video, and have to echo the comments saying that more of the full build videos would be great! I loved that you left in the trial and error and correction. I am also curious, because I did not see it in your tools and materials list. What brand of roller/bearing feather board did you use? I have not seen it before. I have the same saw and liked how that one worked.
Making boxes are my passion and main seller...........yours are a notch above.....I make hexagon and octagon boxes and use 1/4 in materials....you got me thinking about going up to at least 3/8". I think 1/2 may be a little thick but I am going to try it and see. What do you sell your boxes for if you don't mind my asking?
Loved this video and your thorough explanation of the build! It didn’t seem like it was 50 minutes at all. 😂 Very appreciative of your build content. I hope you make more in-depth build videos! Happy New Year!!
When I am going to cut a lid off a box, before glue up, I hot glue some braces across where I will cut to hold the box together. After cutting with the table saw, hand cut the braces thru.
As everyone has said, another excellent video from you. I was wondering if you made a video on your spline jig. Simple enough to make, but having some dimensions would save some time for me. Thanks, Gary
Hi Gary, I dont have a video on it, It was one of the first jigs I ever made a year ago when first started woodworking. I will get a new table saw in next month or so and will make a new one for that, will make sure to film it
Thanks for your quick reply! Your videos are: refreshers, informative, and, importantly, inspirational! I'm 80, just a home woodworker, and I quit making large projects that "giftees" will probably just sell or give away when I'm gone. Your boxes are a really nice, small, easy way, to make a "keepsake". I'm going to make at least ten. I like the "spline" feature as it not only adds strength but also "style" (I will do it in a contrasting color). Gary@@woodworkingwithSkyler
Very nice box, and a good save. I use the same method, and I machine my grooves on the router table, also. But I leave 1/16 material between the grooves, then cut the top from the box on my bandsaw. I also buy my veneers from woodcraft already glued to a 1/4" Baltic birch substrate. Good video!
As always I enjoy watching you making the boxes. Also, thank you for providing information about where you get your wood supplies. That is a big for us rookies. Happy New Year!!
The bottom of the lid is uneven you can easily fix that by laying a piece of sandpaper flat on a flat surface and sanding it just a hair to get even seams around the closing. That router table technique was interesting to say the least never thought of that. Though the sheer force of that type of bit cutting into stock you will need to find a way to fasten the box in place to a sled of sorts to ensure it stays parallel to the fence at all times, I just don't see you having the ability to keep it perfectly straight all the way through the cut with the force of the bit just using your hands.
Great video! Gonna try it too! By the way, I have the same bandsaw, but the factory blade is terrible, can you advise what blade you use? Again, learned a lot here, and thanks!
I need to make a spline jig; with the support blocks not going all the way down to the tablesaw do you have any problem with tear out or splintering on the backside? Thank You for your time.
@woodworkingwithSkyler can you please explain why you didn't use the bandsaw or tablesaw to remove the lid then do the rabbet? I watched this video and I don't quite understand what you were trying to achieve...probably because I'm a beginner
Very Nice, thanks for sharing! I wil have to try the rabbit for the lid, I like the way it did turned out and like it better than doing a liner. one question for you, when you cut the rabbit for the bottom what feather board were you using? Thanks and Have a Happy New Year

Wood movement occurring only perpendicular to the grain direction will not affect the fit of the box lid, therefore extra play isn’t required here.
