We all like to go fast and we also enjoy slowing down to observe the natural beauty along our rides. As an owner and rider of both a 559 and a 700 I use the right trike for each riding experience. The nice long touring ride in a 559 is a joy…and it is also plenty fast. Put me in a light 700 and I am rocket man with no need for any e assist. The exhilaration of going 25 + mph on a 700 is awesome. I just live the experience on any trike. Stay well David and good luck with your treatments and keep posting.

While I still do like speed, I know that it is in my past. Being 55 and having had 4 knee surgeries, I am happy to have found recumbents after not riding for 15 years. My avg speed has been increasing since I started on a trike 13 yrs ago, but I know I won't be hitting 20 mph anymore. My avg is around 13/14 and I am good with that. My roadie friends are good riding "slow" with me when we ride together and, on long rides, they will sometimes just shoot out ahead to burn off that energy and then loop back to ride with me again.
Like you, I like to take in the scenery. When I was doing BRAG this past June, I can't tell you how many times I stopped to take some awesome pics. The joy of the ride is what matters most and pics help me to memorialize it!

Hi Allan. Yes, I do think there is a tradeoff. We go slower but we learn to appreciate a lot of what we missed when we were riding faster. As long as we enjoy the ride, for whatever reason, it's good!

This most interesting, very informative discussion reinforces decades of observing that
the vast majority (betting 95++%) of actual recumbent trike mileage is "touring" rather than "racing" in ACTUAL riding.
    Worth thinking above over.
To me it says comfort over speed...
Even repetitious local touring combines sightseeing, scenery viewing and wildlife watching with mobility AND getting exercise.
Your surrounding locale easily intensifies ten-fold-plus at lower speeds, with head positioned comfortably, full body support,
    AND.., no balance needed!
    (No balance here at all!)
Another revealing, rider winning, seemingly First-Time Internet Discussion.
    Very valuable discussion subject, David!
    Thank you.

Hi Gary. While I agree that speed isn't too important to many of us, I also think that many of us come into the trike world and are surprised at the slow speeds but quickly adapt and find benefit in the slower style.

A nice commentary on the need for speed. A few of my bike club buddies just assume that I've lost my "biking fitness" because of the slower speeds on the bents. I try not to let that bother me and we both know better. Keep up the good videos!

As Scout young and older, my Troop would do 2 or 3 times a year a 20 mile hike and I learned that you need to take your time to enjoy the surroundings of Nature. We would try to do the hikes in 8 hours. Sure there were Scouts that tried to make it a race but by having them identified plants, trees, birds and animals it kept them slowed down and educated them.
There is much more than smelling the roses.

David, I’m the odd ball out there. I’ve been riding a bike since I was a wee young lad and I’ve never really ridden for speed. I may have gotten speed because I wanted to exercise more and wanted to get my heart rate up, but was never to attain speed. I also did a lot of hill riding. As I grew older I wanted to take pictures of these places that I discovered. So it was quite easy to transfer over to the tricycle environment. On my way out to the North Shore I might average 15 to 16 mph but that’s because I want to avoid the traffic before it builds. and then I turn around and ride a very slow paced ride back home. Again more to get exercise. BTW, what a therapeutical path that you ride on. Yea I’m so envious. Aloha

Aloha Bob! 15-16 mph average sounds fast to me! But I understand what you're saying. However, based on the comments here you're not at all the odd one here. Many of us I've just discovered never did care about speed. It seems I'M the odd one!
And yes, "my trail" is wonderful. With the thousands of miles I've ridden it I still never get tired of it.

Great cool jazz, small group band in the background! ii-V-I mod's all over the place! Sorry, nothing to do with anything fast or bent. Just noticed this over my watching of your videos. Anyway, now I'll watch the content. Prior to watching, yeah, lack of speed is one thing that has delayed my buying a three wheeler. My road bike days are long gone, but my two wheeled 'bent, my crank forward Cruz, and my two mtb's have so far filled the bill with my somewhat reduced speed concerns. Getting to the point that I need a trike for serious climbs. Balancing my current two wheelers on steep climbs is becoming an issue. Carry on, David!

I love speed! ICE Sprint, Catrike Dumont, and I sold my "fast" Catrike 700 but bought a WAW Velomobile. Catrike Dumont has a TSDZ2 motor added, which has ZERO assist above 80 rpm cadence. I like riding at 90-110 rpm as it is easier on my knees. Dumont & Burley trailer used on dog food days (80 pounds of food). Recovering from a total knee replacement, so off the trike/Velo for a few months. On my local hike & bike, I ride about 8 to 10 mph. About 15-17 mph (trike) on the open road, Velo is open road (needs a wide turning radius) about 25 mph.

David, Great video - totally agree. I wish to talk to the cows as they walk along the inside of the paddock, as I did as a child. They amble, and I find that just right for them and me. I get my speed “jollies” going down hill where that weight of the trike can be unnerving. Enjoyment is in the travel, not necessarily the destination .- so why cut it short. Keep providing the commonsense that is so uncommon.

Great topic for discussion, David. The atrophy in my replaced left knee keeps my speed down, unless I use my e-assistance. The importance of my rides is to remain active and keep my body in motion. It's very difficult for me to walk due to my joint replacements, but riding my recumbent trike opens up a whole world to me. Speed is not important in that world. 🙂

@@garyseckel295 That's great! You have the perfect outlook on e-assist. I can't afford a motor, or I would have one, because it is no doubt more fun to go a little faster! But then again, contradicting myself, I'm perfectly happy puttering along at the speed my skinny old man legs will allow! A little boost on the rare "hills" here would be nice, but it's not vital. We all just have to go with what we feel is right FOR US, and not feel any peer pressure. E-assist is not vital, but it does allow many people to ride who otherwise would not have the energy to do it without exhaustion. You just gotta do what suits your situation. Another perspective, OK? Typical cruising speed for me on my usual route is in the range of 8 to 10 mph. I don't notice the speed unless riding with someone else which is not too often. Besides, with my poor vision I cannot judge the speed from the passing of the road or surroundings. I try to guess the speed for fun using cadence for my clues. I do have a speedometer which I consult from time to time. For me, anything over 15mph is fast.

My trike is an upright adult tricycle, not a recumbent. I hadn't ridden a trike since childhood; all of my riding had been on bicycles. For health reasons I haven't been able to ride bicycles for many years now but needed to get exercise, hence the trike.
One of the biggest downsides for me is its slowness. The thing weighs 56 lbs. I have 7 gears and ride on roads that are basically flat. Try as I might though, I can't seem to ride any faster than 7+ mph with occasional spurts of 9 to 10 mps but only for short distances. I am getting used to putt-putting along and truly enjoy my rides. But I do get a twinge of envy sometimes when a rider whooshes past me on his speedy road bike.
