Hi David, it is funny to hear you apologize for slowing down to our league. Welcome to the old farts club!! You have always encouraged me when 10-15 miles was a triumph for hubby and me (81 & 75). Also, we are looking to relocate (to one story, small lot) and you inspired me to find a place that has "triking from the driveway". We found a community only 10 miles from our house (2 story on 20 acres) which should serve us well while we can trike.
You have been such a source of validation, inspiration and new aspirations. Thank you.

Watching your Slow Ride video tonight I couldn’t help but think about all you’re facing with your health, but how you are dealing with all these physical and health scares. Yes you are an inspiration for what it means to love what you do, keep active and be positive in your outlook.

I ride slow because of (1) the trikes I own are not geared for speed and (2) I ride without e-assist. Having said that, slow is what I am used to and you see so much more along the way.
To give an example of slow actually being enjoyable, I took 2 of my grand kids out for Trick or Treat yesterday afternoon. As I am developing knee, hip and spinal problems (I now need a cane to walk), I rode one of my recumbents to be with them. What a pleasant experience! Had absolutely no problems on any hill. I let the gears do the work. Slow actually felt good.

Growing up as a diabetic I rarely go to have or taste a donut and when I was getting ready for my pancreas transplant which would cure me of diabetes, everyone asked me, "What are you going to eat?" My usual answer was a Coke but over the years I've found Coke doesn't do a whole lot for me, but a donut? That's a whole other story! And now they have "high-end" donut shops around here and some of them are pretty amazing. I know it sounds weird but if you ever come a cross a bacon donut, don't hesitate. Just buy it and eat it. One mantra I follow is “I can do a lot of things providing I do them slowly and deliberately.” Going slow can be good as you say. So happy to see you out again sharing your thoughts, being tranquil and aware, full of joy and gratitude, in the midst of personal crisis. Have you considered checking your blood O2 levels periodically while riding using an oximeter [thingy MDs use attached to your finger]? You might be able to ride faster if the numbers say so 😊

    • @DavidRidesaTrike

Hi Joseph. Yes, doing things slowly initially is always a good way to introduce oneself to a new activity. I check my 02 level with my Apple Watch. I've checked it again the meter in my doctor's office and it's very accurate so I should be good with that.
