    THEY DID ANESSA DIRTY. I barely saw her this season. I feel like the writers didn’t know what to do with her since her big plot was only in season 2 and now she’s just there as a background character.

      Precisely, I can't believe that they just sidelined her like that, after the big role that she played in the first half of Season 2. Megan's talents are really being wasted, in my opinion.

    Listen, unfortunately with Des, it's REALLY common for Desi/South Asian men to be a mommy's boy and respect their mother more than their gf/wife. So the stereotype was on POINT and I completely understood why they made the character do that.

    • @zya.777
      @zya.777 2 года назад +79

      Right! It really shows how she’s starting to grieve less. We know she was super annoying because of the death of her father. Everybody grieves death differently but sometimes Devi could just be too much. But it’s like she goes from being sad and having so many emotions to having no confidence. Besides that she really could be happy. But you can only tell someone so many times they’re good enough but if they don’t believe it themselves there’s no point. And it just effects all friendships and relationships

    Idk why ppl dont like the show. I actually love the orginality. A typical show paxton and devi would've gotten together and been happily ever after. But in this season devi still dealt with her insecurities and that led to a breakup. THAT IS REALISTIC. Things arent always happily ever after and relationships dont always magically come along and fix all of your problems. Devi still is a screw up and alot of us relate to that. On the flip side her mom and cousin have seen amazing growth as characters in this show. The way her mom stood up for her against rhiyah was amazing. Looking forward to the next season

      I thought Kamala and Nalini were incredibly underused this season. Like typically their relationships are a lot more interactive, and I missed that this season. Also thought it was weird how Kamala's storyline centered a man. I wished we got to see her explore her freedom and independence. Instead of storyline mainly being my grandmother hates my boyfriend. And Devi and Nalini did not interact as much as they usually do. Not to mention Nalini was comically unaware and blasé about what Devi was doing. It felt strange and largely without explanation. Like why would she let Devi go to a party at Trent's house was hospitalized and caught drinking? Not to mention Devi tried to sneak out to go to this party. Like when did miss mama's develop a more relaxed attitude about these things? Like her getting caught in bed with another boy making out, and she is like okay? Even if she is good with them dating (totally can see that happening. Devi dating an Indian boy with a respectable family and the mother is her friend. It could be seen as getting a head start) but she still would have had freaked out over this.

    I love that Devi is a mess. Finally, a main character I can see myself in (or at least my younger self.) I mean most people, especially teens, are a mess, pretty self-centered and insecure even if we are ashemed to admit it. And it doesn't help that there are so few of teen dramas with realistic and flawed but still lovable or understendable protagonists.
    Plus, it takes a long time to realize our flaws and even longer to improve on them. You won't become Mother Theresa overnight. So I liked that Devi's character had down hills and up hills over the course of the seasons instead of a linear development.

    the whole des thing really makes sense from my perspective. in south asian communities, south asian moms think their sons are all that. they want the absolute perfect girl for their sons who fits into all 65,000 different requirements and needs to completely exceed expectations. the way rhyah treated devi, that she would be too much trouble for her perfect little des, really reflected that mindset. also the way that he went along with his mom wanting them to break up (despite knowing that it was a really bullshit excuse) also reflects the way south asian men are joined at the hips with their moms. i'm not sure how to properly explain it but many indian soap operas reflect this mother/son dynamic.

    • @viz7497
      @viz7497 2 года назад +17

      That was a legitimate reason for a breakup. Devi is a broken girl, and a guy like Des shouldn't waste his resources fixing anyone when he can do so much better. You have to realise that only in teen dramas broken people are sane, in reality being in relationship with a broken person can be scarring. So his mom was right.

She could have made a new friend while with Ben, developed her friendship with Devi, met a new future romantic partner whose in the theatre or robotics club. I hope next season she date someone on her soccer team or better yet stays single.

Also she complained about him being condescending, but she also rolled her eyes at and was pretty judgmental about his academic drive. Plus, she shouldn't have dated him in the first place, she knew he was Devi's ex and that there were still unresolved feelings there, she said so herself. I really feel like they should have written Devi deciding to go to that private school. She hooks up with Ben has a summer thing with him and then leaves to go to school. She can’t handle the stress of not being the smartest person in the room and drops out to return to Sherman Oaks. I think it would be interesting to see Devi’s confidence shaken in the one area she has always strived in- academics. Maybe it would evolve into her not wanting to go to her dream college.

      I agree. I get how people like Devi and Paxton together because they’re sweet together and individually have had massive character development between seasons 2 and 3 but they don’t seem like they would last as a couple in the long run, especially with them having barely anything in common. Around Ben, she’s always herself and he still likes her for everything that she is.

      I kind of agree but at the same time, I feel like the audience wouldn’t know if Devi and Paxton would work because throughout their relationship we are only really presented with the fact that Devi is insecure about her being with Paxton. I actually liked Devi’s growth in this season and some of her actions I supported. Like when she confronted the three mean girls who sl*t-shamed her. I thought that was called for because no one deserves to be shamed because of their relationship. And she had lesser angry issues this season, lesser outbursts. I feel like this season was showing that people can have relationships and also move on from them. Every character had a relationship shift; Devi moved from Paxton, to Des, to Ben, Elenor from Oliver to that one toxic dude to Trent, Fabiola from Eve to Anessa to Addison, Ben from Syria, to Devi, to Aneesa to Margot, and Paxton from Zoey to Devi to Phoebe. I feel like this season showed what’s common in high school; that some relationships don’t last for long. I’m with you, I’m still team Paxton. I feel like that relationship was one that really pushed and helped both Devi and Paxton grow as people. Devi realized she focused too much on others opinions of her and Paxton realized that a true relationship can be complicated and messy at times. And at the end, when he realized he needed a relationship that can challenge him in ways he never challenged himself for, I think that was a great thing to learn. Also, I hate the trope of falling for a guy that tormented you for years. Ben was literally the biggest catalyst for Devi’s insecurity issues like when he would call her David or UN(something I’m glad Fabiola brought up but it should have been stressed a bit more). Why does he deserve Devi after all the stuff he’s said to her? And no, it wasn’t a friendly competitiveness because we see Devi break down and question her own self-worth from his words. So yeah, screw Ben. But I guess he needs his chance so that he can let this obsessive attraction for Devi go and Devi can move on to someone better. Now Des…I didn’t like Des only because I knew his mom was going to be a problem. I knew Rhyia was a problem after she spotted Devi’s wheelchair and said that stupid stuff about Des being easy. I was like, yeah that b is just trying to make herself seem better than Nalini. So, I didn’t like their relationship one bit. But like everyone else I do think Des and Devi’s relationship helped in some ways. For one, Devi was able to be comfortable and not have to worry about her worth with Des and they respected each other. So, I’m glad Devi had that experience and even happier that Des is gone. Now, one couple I will continue to support until the end of time: Elenor and Trent. OMG, i didn’t think they’d last. I was waiting for the ball to drop but I think they are the most stable, healthiest couple in this entire show. Elenor’s grin when Trent said he failed senior year matched mines because I couldn’t bear to see these star-crossed lovers part. So, I really hope season 4 doesn’t screw their relationship up because they are cute as hell.

    I definitely agree with most of the what he brings up. As for Devi, I honestly would love for her to start a self-love journey and I think that’s what they might aim for considering she chooses not to go to that school in Colorado. I like how Devi’s therapist brings up the fact that it’s okay for her path to change and for her dreams to stay in the future and for her to focus on the present. It’s important to hear that.
    As for Paxton and Ben, I honestly loved their episode together.
    As for Aneesa, maybe they’ll have a plot where she’s questioning her sexuality or coming to terms with how she feels for Fabiola.
    I hope Nelini (Devi’s mom) finds actual friendship next season!!! 😊😊 I feel like that’d be a good plot point to address: motherhood and finding time for yourself and learning to bond with others.

    I was also really sad that Aneesa and Fabiola dissapeared this season. Aneesa was such a key character in the previous season and is so good to have someone different from their group, like someone more sporty and that takes school seriously but not too seriously, it was a great way to break the stereotype too. I hope she shows up more in this last season.
    Also, I really am team paxton this season, they both had a great arc and developed so much, when he mentions her in his speech it was so sweet, I thought it would be a perfect emotional moment for them to have one last night together and Devi to come full circle and in fact get what she wanted in season 1 but in a meaningful way, with more depth and feelings and not just bc he was the hot guy or whatever

    my top thoughts after watching it:
    1. Devi grew on me a lil this season. Even tho her decisions are just a mess and its mostly bc of her own self thoughts and her friends... might not give the best advices so i dont blame her completely. shes a confused teenager going tru stuff so out of all the seasons she was WAY better in this one (the bar is low)
    2. I was team ben since s1 but this season i hated him omg and one thing i blame its not on him but the way they did the whole love triangle thing. i would completely be into them playing on bens obsessive personality and how he needs to be more free and i would be fine with the plot but most of his scenes were boring or either connecting it to devi which make the whole him and annesa plot useless and im like??? whats the point of that relationship??
    3. Which connects to my next point... LOVE TRIANGLES. i hate them and i hate this one. whats the point of going off and on with these two males and then adding a new male out of nowhere to end up in nothing and when i thought oh okay shes ending up alone to focus on herself, she somehow goes to ben (which its obvious) but i hated the fact that they build devi and paxton for NOTHING. I would understanf if paxton was a thing for the first season and thats it... but they BUILT tru s1 and s2 and then s3 it ends just like that for a boy u didnt interact much with this season... ok??
    4. one thing is hilarious to me is how devis made paxtons ex gf thr villain and when they broke up, hes with another girl like u were insecure about this girl that was supposed to take ur man but it ended up being a cmpletely different blonde girl please
    5. Anessa DESERVED better. I want her villain arc era now

When the moment of truth came he told his mother to admit what she said. Des was just caught off guard by everything that went down. He never agreed with his mother's opinion, he simply didn't want to have to chose between this mother and his girlfriend. South Asians are super family oriented in most cases so being placed in that scenario is the worst nightmare. I had binged all three seasons for the first time, like most people using streaming services do, I know that I would be incredibly confused at the off-beat pacing of all of Devi's relationships. S2 and S3 particularly, considering both started by almost immediately breaking up the relationship(s) the previous season set up as their climactic cliffhanger. Also, we got next to no romantic developments on the Ben front until the very end despite how big of a role his feelings for Devi supposedly played in his breakup with Aneesa, so again, the pacing is weird there. I like how the storyline with Devi's mother and her friendship with Raya ultimately tied into the mother-daughter storyline of supporting each other in their grief, but I'm not a fan of the fact that the only way writers found to do it is through a rehash of previous seasons' "Crazy Devi" stigma storyline.

    I really, really loved the scenes with Fabiola, especially the interactions with characters she usually didn't have one-on-one talks with (Aneesa, Ben, Paxton). The amount of scenes were definitely not enough and she deserves a storyline of her own in season 4.
    Fabiola's family dynamic (incl. her big brother) is totally underdeveloped. One could also forget that she is an Afro-Latina. I mean Eleanor got an entire bit with her Chinese a capella group the Shang-High Notes (amazing name btw and amazing scene at the end of S2E4).
    The scenes she was in in S3 showed how great of a friend and person she is, and that she is just as smart as Ben and Devi. Which brings me to believe that the nomination for the boarding school maybe will go to her (if not her, maybe Ben I guess).

THAT BEING SAID, i genuinely don’t think they’re going to end up together in the end. it pains me so much to say it and believe it, but the way season 3 was set up, its just not gonna happen. we’ve already seen the pattern of season finales (s1 Ben, s2 Paxton, then s3 Ben again), and we all know that romdramedies like NHIE never let a couple have a happy ending UNLESS WE’RE AT THE END. they’re gonna have a summer fling, Devi messes up again which causes Ben to get insecure and rethink their whole relationship. cue him remembering the date with the art girl/cheating on Devi with her and it all spirals to shit. I just don’t think benvi’s gonna happen. BUT, maybe the cheating would cause Ben to realize that he only wants Devi and he shouldn’t abandon any chance of a relationship with her just cause hes scared of the inevitable hiccups that come with the love they have. IDK MAN. ofc i could be overanalyzing, but im also not gonna let mindy kaling in all her magnificently sneaky glory fool me into thinking that benvi is endgame when they might not be (EVEN THO THEY SHOULD). anyways that’s my two cents, would love to be proven wrong, trust me i am BEGGING to be proven wrong 😭

The only downside to Paxton's character is he's a bit too friendly with other girls but other than that he did all he could to reassure Devi and I felt so tired for him. I feel like Devi and Paxton would've never worked out in the long run. I mean, I get this whole "opposites attract" thing and I do think it's true but for opposites to actually work they need one or two things in common (at least one). So they would've probably gotten bored of each other at some point because of lack of understanding on both sides. Also I feel like there's something about Paxton that a lot of people missed. In that one part he told Fabiola that Devi is a really complicated person and this is his last year of high school so he wants something simple and easy. That was a big indicator that Paxton is not ready for a serious relationship. And pushing him to be with Devi might be a bad idea since he's also not ready. 'Paxton and Devi' is a relationship that could go wrong so fast in so many ways. At some point him being sweet and nice won't be enough to save the relationship.

Even tho some of it was still a bit questionable..I loved the thing between Ben and Devi at the end and how romantic it was!

    TEAM BEN ALL THE WAY. I feel that even though Paxton and Devi broke up because of Devi’s insecurities putting that aside if she had none they still wouldn’t have lasted anyway since they literally had nothing in common and how ironic is it that after every interaction she had with Paxton she went to console in BEN? Ben and Devi are literal reflections of each other, the chemistry is there, the banter is there they suit each other so much and they have so much in common. I’m sad to see Des go as I really liked him, sad that they made him a mamas boy but I’m satisfied with how the season ended. If Devi were to lose her virginity thank God it’s to Ben

      Agreed, Ben seems like the better match for Devi, since they're both intellectuals, and while they can be jerks at times, they care deeply for their friends.

      @@trinaq Enemies to lovers trope and I’m here for it. It’s ironic how they did the same thing for Des no wonder we liked him so much
