I love how much Devi has grown up over the course of the four seasons. This is best captured when her and Kamela dance together at the wedding, showing how she's more open to her heritage. I'm glad that other characters, such as Paxton and Nalini, received development, and Devi and Ben officially ended up a couple.
The dancing scene made me cry so hard cause yeah that was an awesome full circle moment from her wanting nothing to do with Indian culture to embracing it
Nalini and Devi's progress from Season 1 to 4 oh I feel emotional just typing it out. I love them so much and I really adore the growth in their relationship
no because it seriously is one of the best mother-daughter relationships i have seen done, and executed well, on television/film in a bit! (or at least in recent shows that focus on teens/young adults) also just love nalini; some of the best lines in the show, especially this season lol
i binged this entire show in four days and nearly cried at the end because i’m graduating high school this year like all the characters, that and all the college anxiety was just too relatable for me haha
I'm surprised that anyone is surprised Devi ended up with Ben. Writers (and often audiences) *love* the enemies to lovers trope, which Devi and Ben fit into, and most of all, think about the ending of the first season. The writers may not have known if the show would get picked up for a second season (especially with Netflix's tendency to cancel shows), and the ending of season 1 ends with Ben and Devi kissing after he drove her to spread her father's ashes. If the show hadn't gotten picked up, that would have been the ending, and was the first major sign that she was going to ultimately end up with Ben.
I’m not surprised but I am disappointed. Them getting together feels like an odd one out amongst all of the happy endings (ending as it can be for a bunch of just-turned-adults). I wasn’t buying it.
Yes, I’m so proud of Devi. When Dr. Ryan said she was so proud, I cried and said the same thing 😢😢😢 they really did a great job with her character evolution.
Agree with everything 😭 Personally, Ben, Paxton and that India boy(especially the India boy. I'd really wanted them to end up together) were lovely to watch with Devi. I sort of wished we had more Nalini scenes. That woman is a goddess. Hopefully there'll be a movie. If there isn't, it's still a solid show. Also Eleanor's outfits in s 4 were lifeeee. Why isn't anyone saying anything about that?
Yes it was obvious her and Ben were endgame! But I also thought maybe they would go in the route of her ending up alone. Also I didn’t even put it together at the end they were playing never have I ever! I love that! I wonder if some of the things they said corresponded to episode titles
@@feliciaroyers1646 That's what I thought at first too!! I thought they would make her end up alone to "Work on herself and be strong and independent", but I cannot express in words how happy I am that they didn't go that route. It would've been stupid Imo to do that because she’s already gone through a beautiful healing process and through it all, Ben has been there. And a person can be strong and independent and all that with a lover too. So Devi ending up with Ben was just perfect❤️
this season especially the last episode felt so RUSHED ima miss my girl devi fr 😢😭 she was so relatable and it made me so happy seeing her as representation. the season shouldve at least had 15 eps
I got emotional too! Devi's character developed beautifully. I was not expecting Ben to be endgame (though given Kaling's track record, not that surprised) but as their relationship changed from childish bickering to a deeper understanding of each other and the pressure they put on themselves- I wasn't mad at the ending! I really hope Kaling starts to listen to these comments and shows more brown love or non-white, mixed-race couples. There's so much potential once you get past the disrespectful-white-man-turned-love-interest. She's otherwise a great writer and I do enjoy her shows!
I’m kind of sad it’s ending too. I discovered your channel by talking about never have I ever. I was tearing up watching the finale. I was so proud of Devi and her development like she was my little cousin. My only thing is Aneesa and Fab didn’t get enough screen time
People say they are all for mental health until we talk about Ben and Devi. They are both my favorite characters in the show (with Nalini) and one of my favorite characters in general. I just find them both so misunderstood by a lot of viewers. The whole thing about their relationship this season was about their own insecurities. They mirror each other so well. Ben didn't throw Devi out of his house or dated Margot just because he was a jerk. Devi didn't change what she wanted to text him because she didn't like him that much. They both have such strong feelings for each other but their own insecurities get in the way, which is so much more realistic for teenagers than Devi's relationships with the elderly (Paxton) and the criminals (Ethan). The whole season they both think the other doesn't like them when it is so obvious they love each other. Only when they put that aside do we get those sweet moments like Ben staying over to comfort her about Princeton while being the only one that gave her space to actually be upset about it while everyone was telling her that's not that awful. They also were a safe space for each other admitting they are both scared to go to college. They have a vulnerability with one another they don't share with anyone else in the show. While I understand someone maybe not liking Ben as a character, I think a lot of people project themselves onto Devi by saying they don't want them together because, honestly? They work. They are perfect for each other now that they've grown so much, in my opinion.
I actually forgot that Aneesa was in the show until she appeared on the screen for the first time in season four. And I'm a Team Ben shipper through and through I cried the last five minutes of the last episode because it was so sweet and I was so happy.
This show was so good. I finished the last season in a day. And I'm still not set with Ben being the love interest but it is what it is ig. Thank you sm for getting me into this show
I was surprised that she ended up with either of them at the end, I thought she'd just be single and be their friends or something. I also wouldn't mind a s5 for college, we never get Gen Z college
I binged season 4 in one day and it was just awesome. Devi in the S4 is so much more mature compared to S1 and the conversation with her therapist made me cry so bad. I’m so happy to see her grow into a confident woman who’s proud of her culture. Also I like how they actually showed how difficult Ivies are to get into (especially since other Netflix shows make it super easy looking) since if anyone deserved a place it was Devi. Also her closure with her father’s death was a perfect ending. I am mad that Ethan was under-utilised but I also liked that his thing was he was an actual bad person who loved attention from girls since that was a cool inversion of the trope and his relationship with Devi really helped her oub
I like the fact that she ends up with Ben, sometimes the person that is for us aren't always the person that we root for at the start, Ben understands her. They have a connection and I think the promoters made an excellent choice.
I honestly think that Ben and Devi are a great couple! I understand where ya'll are coming from when you say that you don't like it but I love that they went from academic rivals to lovers. Just my opinion though
Honestly I thought season 1 was so cringe I genuinely didn't get the hype at all, but as I kept watching I started to understand why people are so drawn to this show. She's so messy but she's so authentically herself and the progress she's had over the last 4 seasons is insane. The therapy sessions always make me emotional too. Personally I didn't even care if she went with ben or paxton because I thought they were both really well fleshed out characters (I love my boi michael cimino down but it would've been weird if ethan was her endgame). I hope this isn't the last we see of maitreyi! She's very charismatic and funny
I gotta say, I didn't love the fact that this was sponsored by betterhelp. no hate, I've just seen such awful things about how betterhelp is pretty bad for a lot of clients and the therapists are not actually qualified. just something to think about looking into
Great show! The writing for Season 4 was all over the place but it was still easy to get through. I do like that Devi and Ben got together but how they did is was annoying and strange. Was tired of the constant inconvenient moments between them two. I think it’s an 8/10 for me! Sad it’s gone but hopefully there’s a spin-off or movie or something like that.
honestly this show was almost everything i could ask for cause i’m also a academically ambitious hot-headed tamil girl living in south california struggling with mental health and making stupid mistakes that are kinda selfish and struggling with my relationship with my mom and the list goes on. this show and everyone reaction of support made me feel sm more confident in myself and made me feel better for making mistakes and i just felt rlly seen
OKAY, I had to pause this video in the middle of watching it to a) thank you for your opinions on Devi’s mental health journey. Seeing one of us (I’m a south Asian American) go through the journey of therapy and really reflect was so beautiful. I’m a therapist so I definitely have a bias but I thought it was so thoughtfully done. That scene with her therapist 🥹 And b) YES TO YOUR COMMENT ABO IT BEN BEING THE WORST OPTION. I don’t mind Ben as a whole but I was so dissatisfied that they ended up together, it almost felt like it ate up so much of the rest of the show and all of the things that were done so well to round it out. I was disappointed. May return to comment more but I HAD to thank you for those opinions lol
Also yes, I feel like though I’ve been team Paxton from jump, I agree that it would have been better had Devi ended up on her own, empowered and loving herself.
OK, also yes to the through line of Nalini’s and Devi’s relationship and of the development of Paxton’s character 💕 I was so happy with the way they rounded out some of the storylines and this video actually enhanced my appreciation for it (you know, when I am finally able to set my dissatisfaction with the Devi-Ben relo to the side lol).
I was rooting for Ben and Devi till the beginning of Season 4. When he blew her off after giving him her V-card, I was done with him. His big "romantic" gesture of coming home to her grandma's wedding, didn't do it for me. I actually would have preferred the wedding to end with Devi and her group of friends playing Never Have I Ever, and then cut to her responsible morning ready and packed with her mom. I was okay with Ben and Devi parting as friends, but they didn't need to get back together, since they were never healthy together. So many other great moments felt like they were downplayed in favor of Ben and Devi getting back together. I love Devi admitting to Kamala that she considers her like a sister, and so a better after she moves to college scene for me, might have been getting together for weekly family dinners with Kamala or doing zoom calls her as she adjusts to her first week of school.
Ben and Devi should have never been end game. I don't understand how they made her basically end up with her Bully. I personally feel like Devi and Devi should've been end game.
I loved it was always a show I related to in a lot of ways. I always liked Ben with Devi. Yes they were both mean to each other in the beginning but they grew up from enemies. I liked seeing Davi growth with her therapist, her mom, and Kamala. I also enjoyed Paxton arc as well and was glad he would get a happy ending. I know the actor who played Ethan was busy this year since he was On How I Met Your Father and Aneesa was probably busy as well. I do hope they continue this world to maybe a winter break episode to bring all the characters. I think millennials needed college shows as well
Personally, I'm not that upset with how the show ended with devi and ben together. I think it's kinda sweet, but I also wouldn't have been mad of they didn't end up together. Tbh, I feel like I would've been satisfied with any coupling or ending for devi just bc I loved this show so much overall. I'm so sad it's over :(
No one's mentioned: The worldly-ness to add an esteemed HBCU for Fabiola 🎉 Including Howard University was brilliant and dignified, it didn't feel like they were pandering.
i really disliked ben and devi ending together. if i'm being honest, in the first half of the season i kinda wished she would end up with paxton but just because i really like him as a person/character, and after everything they've went through i can understand why it didn't happen (and i really liked the whole paxton-ms thompson arc). so, in that sense, i was hoping devi would end up "alone". i never liked ben and i admit i understand the whole enemies to lovers trope but it just didn't ~click for me in that case. they've been hurtful for eachother in the entire series and even in the brief moments where they were together it just didn't work and the last season starts literally showcasing us this (like ben LITERALLY says it's better if they aren't dating). this ending was lowkey predictable if you know how mindy works but i really feel like the season was building up to the moment when devi realizes she's much more than the traumatized kid in the start of season 1. AND IT REALLY DID A GREAT JOB DOING THAT but the thing with ben is that i think it just brings back to her highschool self again and contradicts all the development these two had (individually and together as enemies to lovers to friends to whatever) idk
Literally it should’ve been Paxton idc idc mindy only picked Ben bc he reminds her of her husband lol I never found them cute and I doubt there relationship will last and I hate how they tried to make Paxton a whole grown men just so he wouldn’t end up with Devi like that man was a year older than her lmao
Aneesa, deserved so much more! I agree. I also don’t like Devi and Ben being together. Overall, NHE was one of my favorite shows! 😢🎉😭🥹 I’m going to miss it!
Mr. K was also neglected and he only showed in the last episode. He was mentioned a few times throughout but it seemed odd for him to barely be around.
Ben is the only love interest that made sense to end with. If they’d ended up with Devi “choosing herself” after 4?seasons it would be so unsatisfying.
it would've been so cool if it was a show where she had a bunch of different love interests but ended the show going off on her own but whatever ig haha
I LOVED this season!!!! But I definitely did wish that Ethan’s character was shown after they broke up and maybe even him realizing that he can’t be a bad boy forever. I also wish they had went a little bit deeper into Fabiola’s decision and journey going to Howard. Like if they had went on a trip after the club scene at Princeton. They could’ve thrown in an HBCU moment. But I still enjoys it ALOT!!
I really just hate that after ALL this she chose Ben. I’ve seen so many polls of who the people wanted and Ben always had last place LOSING TO ETHAN WHO IS ONLY IN LIKE 3 EPISODES!!!! Man I hated them being endgame but this show was amazing for me
they nuked ethan’s character 😭, they could’ve had devi teach him that there could’ve been more for his future and he didn’t have to resort to pretty crimes and violence, but instead they just turned him into an actual criminal to justify writing him out of the story. his character had so much potential AND imo way more chemistry than devi and ben ever had together
I do not think Paxton should have ended up with the teacher. He was 19 and barely out of school himself. He seemed like he needed more time to come into his own. No one talks about Fab and I think that is a disservice
They did Anesa super super dirty!!!! I honestly thought she was going to find love or something, Anything!! That girl honestly went through the most all to just get forgotten in the final season 😢
I agree with being disapionted that Devi ended up with Ben. I knew it was inevitable but I didn't want it to be true. I am with the mom and the Principle saying, "Really Ben Gross!? How?"
I didn’t mind Devi getting with Ben that much i love a good enemies to lovers and they were really funny also I know this happend Ed in season 2 but how did Paxton get ran over by a car and only got a broken arm and then everybody acted like it was the end of his life when he went back to being fine but anyways I just kept swapping teams with ben and Paxton Season 1:ben I died every scene she had with Paxton Season 2:Paxton because he started liking Devi again but beginning of season was ben Season 3:Paxton was great and ben felt thrown aside for half of it Season 4:ben but it felt like the only reason they made Paxton drop out and become a teacher so it would be ben
I loved this series and liked who everyone ended up with I felt like Ben and Devi both challenged each other in a good way I like his nickname for her David lol it was always going to be ben it was hinted throughout the series especially with his first one off episode where we got to see Ben’s home life and I loved Devi’s mom finding love and Devi being so okay with it the growth this show was and is amazing THE WRITING on this show was top notch 🤌🏾🥹 *also the scooter scene while fade into you plays 🤌🏾🤌🏾 to cute
Kinda yeah. I’m surprised there was no episode for her. I would’ve liked to see her and Addison navigate their new relationship dynamic since Addison is in college and Fab was in high school
They paid Fabiola’s storyline DUST this season. We didn’t get to see how she actually achieved creating an inclusive environment in robotics club, we don’t know if there’s any trials and tribulations with her relationship, even her mom dictating where she goes to school could’ve been more, and they could’ve dig deeper in her choice in choosing to attend Howard as opposed to Ivy League or other PWIs
@@Tima-oz5te now that I think about it, in like one of the last robotics scenes there were suddenly multiple girls in the club, although they initially only showed that one girl joining…wish we could’ve seen that process
I was a little disappointed by the lack of focus on Aneesa, and how she seemed to disappear into the background. But it's possibly explained by Megan Suri receiving a lead role in a horror movie, so needing less screentime to prepare.
@@_______________mit_ski no she was not . Everyone has their own choice to follow their beliefs. I'm hindu and I have lots of Muslim friends ( I'm from India) and they have their own beliefs . Let's not judge people
Mindy actually ate with this show in particular. Like you mentioned the gradual development of going from "crazy" devi to just devi felt really natural. The writers and actor herself need to get there flowers, because this show was great
idk how i feel about devi ending up with ben BUT i thought it was glaringly obvious that she was never gonna end up with paxton. from the first season paxton was presented as an "unattainable" high school crush, and was really a catalyst for devi realising that no matter how hot or popular her boyfriend was, it wouldn't make her love herself/value herself any more. her relationship with paxton was cute and he was really sweet to her, but it was never gonna work out because she couldn't overcome her own issues while she was in that relationship. idk maybe i read it wrong but i always saw her and paxton as a high school romance, nice while it lasted, but was never gonna go anywhere else.
I shipped Devi and Ben because they have the most chemistry. I always felt that although Paxton liked Devi, I always felt he only kept going back when people pointed out how beneficial devi was to him academically.
Totally! Their interactions are quite endearing (barring him blurring boundaries as a teacher and once you ignore the actors’ age difference) and I think they got through all the romance they needed to to end up with a good friendship.
I will forever ship Paxton and Devi because it really seems like they helped each other grow. Obviously Paxton matured a lot through his time spent with Devi but her crush on Paxton was the catalyst for her starting to process hers fathers death. They both make each other better. I also dislike Ben tho so idk lol
glad to see some Ethan appreciation, because I've been team Ben since season 1, but when she was dating Ethan i was actually like "maybe we can forget about Ben, maybe they dont need to get back together" like, i was ENTHRALLED 😭😭
@@to_be_consumed same especially bc of a stupid wallet that he stole for you, ¿that makes him a bad person?, fgs do we forget when devi was cheating and never got serious consequences? Bitch at least Ethan is loyal.
I loved this season and how it ended! Something that I really appreciated and don't see a lot of people talking about is how they represented the college application process and how Devi had to deal with the reality that Ivies are super hard to get into and that it's not your fault if you don't get in. I feel like so many teen shows these days are so nonchalant about everyone getting into prestigious colleges despite not doing anything academically (cough cough Kissing booth). Here, however, we see Devi make it her life's goal to get into Princeton, do everything right academically, and still not get in (at first) and get rejected by every other Ivy. It was also not smart of her to only apply to Ivies anyway but... I just really liked that storyline and it felt fresh and realistic in comparison to so many other shows and movies right now. I think the other characters also had interesting college arcs and sort of showed the other issues you might deal with, like Fabiola not knowing where she wants to go, or Eleanor's audition not going how she wanted it to, or even Ben struggling to fit in at Columbia. Then there's Devi at the end of the season struggling to pack and leave home for college. As someone who just graduated high school and is now heading to college, I really liked the inclusion of all these storylines, and especially related to Devi's.
YESS I so appreciated how they showed that the characters also had actual assignments/several extracurriculars to do alongside their teenage drama, and how it still helped progress the story. I was very entertained by the debate tournament, the Gatsby mock trial, etc. And like you said, them showing the stress of college applications, like not everyone can get into Harvard and Stanford lmao
@@agustdismyking3510I'm not from the US and for a long time I tought the Ivies were the only collages/unis the US had because of the teen movies/shows 😭
@@lilac.mascara TBH ME TOO!! And I live in the US☠️. It was just so normalized in every series that I really thought those were the only collages you could get into without being a disappointment. 🤦♀️
I LOVED Fabiola’s arc and the moment she knew she wanted to go to Howard. It fit her so well and I’m glad she didn’t choose her college based on her friend. Also yeah the kidding booth was so funny because why would Elle ever get into that many good schools all she did was dance dance revolution
Amen on more gen z college shows! As an undergrad student, I feel that there aren’t any American shows that really capture my college experience. High school shows are interpersonal slice-of-life (if done correctly) but college shows are always about big parties and massive life changes. When in reality, the biggest struggles of most college students are making new friends for the first time in years (it’s not easy!), adjusting to a new work schedule, and entering the working world. None of which I have seen explored sensitively in English-language programs.
you should definitely give sex lives of college girls a try! Especially because its another show created by Mindy and has lowkey similar vibes to NHIE but in a more mature setting
I loved this season of NHIE. It did make sense to me her ending up with Ben and tbh, he was really there for her and pushed her to be the best she could be. I've had friends who's parents weren't around much, so I feel for him in that way. And yes, sadly, Kamala and Aneesa were slided this season. So sad.
I don't know why people say he was always there for her. They were competitive, yes, but that doesn't mean he's a nice person or a good partner. Across time you can see how Paxton was there a lot more to help her when she needed help than Ben. But I guess people like the enemies to lovers storyline.
Yes i missed those 2 also (Kamala and Aneesa). I really missed we didnt get to see more of independent and thriving Kamala and some cute moments with her BF. Also no time with cool Aneesa and her friendship. But i also missed we didnt get few real moments with Fab and her GF. 🙁
@@daisyo.6666 when he wasn't there it was typically due to Devi sabotaging their friendship, same with Paxton (he iced her out after getting hit by the car). i hope that she eventually is single, Devi needs a bad bitch single gorlie arc fr
Bro, Ethan even with that less of a role, took my breath away like BRO IS MAJESTIC and the way he acts so perfectly as the knee-bucklingly hot bad boy was amazing...I am just happy I got to experience that
Same I was so confused when she showed back up outta nowhere, at first I assumed she'd been written out altogether and she may as well have been. I vaguely remember when they were applying to colleges she said she was glad she was doing something else or didn't have to do that, but that's all my fishbrain remembers until I rewatch it. And when she's not there the whole group just acts like it's only the three of them again? This is how I fear my friends act when I'm not there lol. I was also expecting them to do something with Addison this season, like their relationship with Fab happened really quickly (mostly offscreen) last season because they were only in like 2 episodes and barely spoke, but they were Fab's partner this season supposedly and we still don't see them much or know anything about them? I didn't even know they were non-binary until I looked up the actor. I get that there was a lot going on for the main characters but they introduced new ones with their own plots, so why not give the existing ones something to do too y'know? 🤷
I thought it was really nice that they included that Devi wanted to go to Princeton her entire life because it held sentiment to her about her dad. That explained so much about her character and made me feel for her
I've been temat Ben since S1, but this season Ben definitely made it difficult to be on team Ben. Also, love triangles were such a tired formula at this point. Well, at least they retired Paxton as a love interest and allowed him to grow as a character. I really loved his and Devi's friendship. Overall, I feel like this season was a bit too packed, felt rushed at some times (fast-forwarding to graduation, underdone Fabiola's robotic club's plot, lack of Aneesa, disappearing Ethan), it should've been 15 episodes long. Still enjoyed it and clinging to that "for now!" by McEnroe.
I loved season 4. Her growth was just… wow and although her dad wasn’t shown a lot i felt all though it was fine- we got to see her form into who she is without referencing her dad in a sad way but in a positive way about Princeton🧡🧡
Yeah I HATED that she ended up with Ben. I mean it is a Mindy Kaling so we know she has an obsessions with her characters ending up with BJ type. And I was praying that she could at least let Devi go to college alone, but nope. She just can't not do this. You were right to say Ben was the worst option because he was. Ethan was better than him, and he was a whole criminal!! It's kills me. It doesn't make sense, outside of knowing that Mindy is obsessed with putting her characters with BJ types. I just don't believe that Devi would entertain that man. Not after all that development. Not when she has a father that was so loving and kind with her. Nah. it was trash. Expected trash, but trash nonetheless. The Anessa snub was hideous. Like how you gonna do your own people like that Mindy? As far as Megan having other work, no that's not it. I checked the timelines. Her movies were shot in 2021. While filming for season 4 was done in 2022. So she was cut on purpose.
Finally a comment I wholeheartedly agree with, after all her growth… her ending up with Ben was a step backwards for her. I know some ppl will disagree but idc, I have never liked Ben and I never will. Tbh Devi didn’t need him or anyone else. Solo Devi would’ve kicked ass and would’ve made the most sense for her character arc / full circle moment. I will always love Paxton of course it’s just so clear they were right person wrong time and that they will have a bond that transcends beyond high school. So either way ig it’s for the best.
@@kaeyasl1t Don't misunderstand me, I don't care about Ethan either. I'm just using him to highlight how Ben is the worst person Devi has dated. Like she was treated better in that relationship than the one with Ben, and he's supposed to be shitty. That was the point. I didn't even notice Ethan never showed up again after the break up.
I also love how they portray the university cycle, and how life doesn't end after an "acceptance letter" and that it might not feel as great as you anticipate but in the end is always the best choice, and that its okay to let go of the life you envisioned as a pre-teen when u didnt truly know yourself or the world fully, but that doesn't mean you wont regret if ya don't try!
The one thing that consistently threw me off was how unrealistic their love life was. Like wow what a coincidence there was another young teacher that happened to start with Paxton? And EVERYBODY ended up with a love interest. It’s unrealistic asffff
This is probably the best Netflix Original in term of writing and acting, and i loved the show so much, i love how the whole season was just a closure and i cried almost all episode it was soo emotional and i related a lot with the things that were happening.
I agree, ben was not end game in my mind. Paxton would have been good, but if she ended up single that would have been great. I wonder where it will go if they continue the story or do a spin off.
@jessicaa4436 valid, but with that, "signing off for now" only leads me to believe this is possibly not the last time we'll see Devi or that friend group.
I think Aneesa was also done dirty, and I wish I could’ve seen more of her. So happy to see a story of the jock who dropouts 2 weeks into his freshmen year in college, and still have a happy ending and figuring himself out. I was shocked by the endgame relationship ending, I would’ve wanted to see her be alone. Love your video, so sad this series is ending 😢
I agree with you on the most points but Paxtons ending was really not it. Don’t get me wrong I loved his whole arc and becoming a teacher really suits him but I hated for him to end up with Lindsay. The show worked so hard too make it seem like he and Devi were in so different places in their live when they were just one year apart. Lindsay on the other hand had already gone through college, got a job to teach senior level of highschool and the started dating someone that not even a year ago had been a student at that school. No one can tell me that they are closer in their life situations then him and Devi. It was so forced treating them like a student teacher relationship when he wasn’t even her teacher and a few months ago had been her boyfriend. Also the Lindsay plot was so obvious from the beginning and not in a good way. The moment I saw a new young teacher I knew they would make her end up with Paxton even though they had zero chemistry. Also her hanging out with kids that she taught like a week ago and telling them to use her first name🚩. I’m not saying that Daxton had to be endgame but they completely disregarded the feelings that had been there when they parted in season 3 and also those that led to the kiss in season 4. Like they had to tell us a thousand times that they didn’t feel anything and just were friends but like why would you have to emphasise that if they were really just friends? It’s like they were trying to convince us not to ship them and it’s very sad that they dropped Daxton so unceremoniously. And I would’ve been okay as friends if they had given that process a bit more of explanation but I would let him go back to college single and finding someone there if it was so important that the person had the same maturity as him. I really didn’t like Lindsay she was really annoying and always acted as if she was so mature and grown up to make Paxton feel bad.
I think she should’ve ended with Paxton. Paxton realizes he loves Devi because she pushes him to be a better person and because she believes in him. Ben realizes he loves Devi because of a wet dream....
i like ben the best for devi. they drive each other academically, they are competitive to the point they motivate each other. they have very similar senses of humor and interests, and are both huge dorks with confidence and family issues. no other boy was as consistently there for Devi as Ben was. Paxton was very wishy washy with her at first, especially when she ended up being his tutor. ben made it clear that he wanted to support devi (such as when he drove her to spread her dad's ashes). in the end i think she realizes that while she may find boys like Paxton more attractive, she also realizes that she has loved Ben all this time and that he was the right choice for her. of course, they're so young, i doubt it lasting past college, i hope they remain friends tho
I don’t like how they didn’t show side characters like Aneesa, also didn’t like that the dude form love victor was hyped up so much in the trailer just to barley be in the seaosn
I liked Ben as a love interest because he had so many of his own issues, that I would argue were on the same level as Devi’s and he was so imperfect and their chemistry was great. He also grew a lot. One of my fave scenes with him was when he was laying in bed with Devi on prom night and he told her something about his feelings and saw she was asleep and he just smiled. He didn’t obsesses over it or anything. That said, I wish he wasn’t white. Like this show has so many great characters of colour, I think it would just have added a bit more depth and representation to not have a white guy as end game. Not that the actor wasn’t great, but you know.
why is everyone against a white guy. i don't get it. its the majority population in america so some white characters are needed. it can't be all people of color. i am of color by the way. i just want to understand as many including the host commented the same thing.
It really doesn't bother me but pushing mixed race couples does seem to be the in thing for TV ATM. One of Ben's problems was that his parents had effectively abandoned him and simple things like a family meal was what he wanted and needed and is something he would get from Devi's family as Indians are very family orientated, a very sweet part of the plot IMO ❤
I half disagree. I agree that it’s nice seeing Paxton find himself and find that he wanted to become a teacher because he realized he liked helping someone and making a difference but I didn’t like that he came as a teacher at his old high school..like I feel like they could have done it that he came back from Arizona and Eric found him and asked him to show him how to swim so it’s a side thing but not as a teacher, it just makes it icky considering he was just dating Devi and he slept with so many of the girls the year prior. Also him and the teacher I also didn’t like, I know Paxton is supposed to be 19 and she’s 21-22 since she just graduated college but idk, like it’s still feels weird again, given the fact that he just graduated high school not even a year ago. And I feel like Paxton and her didn’t even really have anything in common idk. I didn’t care for it. With Devi, I feel like Devi and Ben are the best frienemies. I liked their friendship turned bickering/insults/bully. I think they’re great as friends who support each other and all but I just don’t see the sexual/romantic chemistry between them. It feels forced. They truly should have ended up as friends only. Unpopular opinion but I loved Ethan. I think he was great for Devi. I like that this was the complete opposite relationship with Paxton. She was the dominant one the one in charge. He happily subbed to her, like he just went along with what she said or did. Ethan was enamored with her. I liked that we got that little fact that he’s never met anyone who is like Devi, who kinda tells him to his face things and who basically orders him around and I like that Devi didn’t have to chase Ethan, he chased her. It was nice seeing someone who was so into her from the start you know? I feel like they should have lasted all of senior year and maybe kept a long distance relationship until she met someone else in college. It just seemed like timing was such an issue with this season because from what I heard, aneesa’s actor wa filming something else that’s why she wasn’t there much, Ethan also had other stuff going on so he was there for like 2 episodes and gone. And manish (I think is his name) Kamala’s boyfriend, was also having some scheduling issues so he wasn’t there which felt odd. Like I feel like if Kamala was going to be there a lot he needed to as well. Also, grandmas whole boyfriend/husband thing was so random and came out of nowhere and was completely unnecessary. I feel like if they wanted to have an Indian wedding they would have had Kamala but again manish not being there ruined that. It was just so random and the fact that he was white too like why? Mindy needs to stop fetishizing the WOC with the white man trope
Def knew what they were gonna do with the teacher and Paxton and hated it immediately because of that reason. Like no way a dude fresh out of hs should be with someone who graduated college. Idk it just felt weird, and you’re right about them not having anything to talk about. Like “oh, both of us like to teach” ok??? And???
YESSSSSS I agree. Paxton and that teacher felt really forced. I get him having to come to terms with not being the cool kid anymore and becoming an adult. But I felt like her whole thing was “when you fall flat on your face because you realize you’re not cool anymore, you know where to find me”. Like idk, that lesson could’ve been taught in a smoother way. Maybe it would’ve been received better if they actually had something in common. There was no chemistry lol. I really liked Ethan but he dropped the ball for me after stealing the wallet. I did think his heart was in the right place when singing Devi’s praises in front of the Princeton lady, but I don’t get why he thought the wallet was a good move after just doing that. I liked that he was so into her though because for once Devi didn’t have to do the work. And yea the Pati plot was kinda random. I got the idea that Kamala was invested in their relationship because Pati had been invested in all of her’s, so it was kinda to get her back. I felt like there wasn’t much closure with Pati and Manish and I really wish he was at the wedding, or like you said, it would’ve been even better if Manish and Kamala got married and Pati was upset with her and vowed not to come but showed up at the last minute
I wasn’t surprised at all that devi ended up with Ben despite him being the “wrong” choice for the simple fact that the POC main character usually a girl always ends up with the white lead, despite having another POC love interest This is the route that a lot of coming of age shows go with for example Ginny, and Georgia to all the boys, Doogie MD(reboot) never have I ever, ect. Where the POC main character usually ends up with the white lead instead of the POC lead male interest
That would have made sense if it werent for the fact that the other love interests sucked. Paxton and her had nothing in common. Des was a mommas boy and Ethan was a crimminal...
@@Fan_Girl-xd8wy Ignoring that Paxton was still a great love interest until they made him a teacher in s4 (which aged him too much for Devi in the audience’s mind) you do realize that Des being a momma’s boy, Ethan being a criminal, and Paxton somehow never actually ending up with Devi is due to the writers (so the OP’s comment still holds true). Like if the writers didn’t make up some thing (which understandable in like s1-s3 to move a storyline along) to discount Des, or Ethan, or Paxton being near perfect boyfriends, you would’ve still liked them? Ethan was great if it wasn’t for the stealing, Des was amazing if he didn’t break up with Devi over his mom (though I understand their break up more than Ethan’s since Devi was still grieving heavily and didn’t really feel secure in herself), and Paxton literally broke up with her b/c he wanted her to love herself and somehow Devi ‘realizes’ that she always thought of him as a dream? (Which was true in s1 and beginning of s2 but it was clear that a friends to lovers situation was going on once she saw him as more than a popular guy)
Yeah, this happens all the time across TV shows from Shonda Rhimes shows like Bridgerton to Ginny and Georgia, to The Little Mermaid. Don’t get me wrong, I want more diverse endgame couples too, but it’s weird how everyone acts like it’s only Mindy’s shows doing it. She doesn’t work in a vacuum and studio executives are mostly white men.
@@parvatir3964 I totally agree it’s definitely not just her. I just would love for this cycle to at least not happen in most teen shows like they literally dangle a POC character in our face as a love interest and it gives us hope that maybe the main character will end up with them, all for them to always end up with the white love interest and the POCcharacter is always so good for example John Ambrose(TATB) and Tommy Torres(Tall girl). It’s sad because it’s clear that they(POC love interest)were not even a real option in the first place.

I love how much Devi has grown up over the course of the four seasons. This is best captured when her and Kamela dance together at the wedding, showing how she's more open to her heritage. I'm glad that other characters, such as Paxton and Nalini, received development, and Devi and Ben officially ended up a couple.
yesss I agree w everything you said
The dancing scene made me cry so hard cause yeah that was an awesome full circle moment from her wanting nothing to do with Indian culture to embracing it
Yesss I feel exactly the same way
heyyy trina
@@mollymay7760 Hey, Molly, how's things going?
Nalini and Devi's progress from Season 1 to 4 oh I feel emotional just typing it out. I love them so much and I really adore the growth in their relationship
no because it seriously is one of the best mother-daughter relationships i have seen done, and executed well, on television/film in a bit! (or at least in recent shows that focus on teens/young adults)
also just love nalini; some of the best lines in the show, especially this season lol
I loved their progress too. nalini was the best in season 3 and 4 😭😭💗💗💗
i binged this entire show in four days and nearly cried at the end because i’m graduating high school this year like all the characters, that and all the college anxiety was just too relatable for me haha
4?? I watched in 1 day. I don't know if I should be proud
Same dude I feel you :(
This show came out when I was in my Junior year, so it’s not perfectly aligned with my development, but it’s been a nice constant as I’ve grown up
Dude I feel that especially with graduating it HITS
Samee, I’ve never related more to a show. I really hope they come up with a sequel to keep up with college cause it would eat!
It's always been Ben, all along.
Nalini has to be my favorite on the show. Her character development and relationship with Devi is my favorite thing.
i loved aneesa and the show literally was like oh no she has an ED , oh no drama, ok byeee and then she had like 2 lines. i was so sad, she was great
also i really did enjoy paxton’s arc, i think it was so nice to see him grow and mature and then end up with such a slay woman
i might be wrong but i think aneesa’s actress was busy filming a movie which is probably why she was barely present.
@@jupitersecIipse that would definitely make sense
The finale was perfect in my opinion
i love when people articulate exactly how im feeling
You explained it so beautifully... I totally agree with you❤
Agree with everything 😭
Personally, Ben, Paxton and that India boy(especially the India boy.
Honestly I agree with what you said about Ben and Devi. It’s like a “I wanted it until I had it” type of situation 😢😢
❤
I actually forgot that Aneesa was in the show until she appeared on the screen for the first time in season four. And I'm a Team Ben shipper through and through I cried the last five minutes of the last episode because it was so sweet and I was so happy.
This show was so good. I finished the last season in a day. And I'm still not set with Ben being the love interest but it is what it is ig. Thank you sm for getting me into this show
I was surprised that she ended up with either of them at the end, I thought she'd just be single and be their friends or something. I also wouldn't mind a s5 for college, we never get Gen Z college
THANK YOU!! IVE BEEN SAYING ANEESA DESERVES SO MUCH BETTER!!
Honestly, my fav character too❤
I would've also loved a narrative part to her
I binged season 4 in one day and it was just awesome.
I am mad that Ethan was under-utilised but I also liked that his thing was he was an actual bad person who loved attention from girls since that was a cool inversion of the trope and his relationship with Devi really helped her oub
what i love about this show is that it's for everyone, i watch it with my mum and we always have so much fun, everyone can relate to someone in a way
I like the fact that she ends up with Ben, sometimes the person that is for us aren't always the person that we root for at the start, Ben understands her. They have a connection and I think the promoters made an excellent choice.
I think this show and Crazy Ex Girlfriend are two of the best realistic mental health depictions I’ve seen on tv
I honestly think that Ben and Devi are a great couple! I understand where ya'll are coming from when you say that you don't like it but I love that they went from academic rivals to lovers. Just my opinion though
i was WAITING on this video (team ben fr!!🤧)
oh that’s not…
@@imuRgency sawryyy i’m a sucker for rivals to loversss😭😭😭
I loved Ben since day one😭 bc he always wanted her to be her best and academic rivals❤️
I just enjoyed listening to someone else talk about this show. Thanks. I loved and agreed with everything you said. Really great video
I gotta say, I didn't love the fact that this was sponsored by betterhelp. no hate, I've just seen such awful things about how betterhelp is pretty bad for a lot of clients and the therapists are not actually qualified. just something to think about looking into
I was just searching yesterday to see if you had a video on this yet lol perfect timing!
I like that she ended up with him bc its still very "highschool" i hope we get a college spin off and we see how that affects them all
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO TALK ABOUT ANEESAAA I LOVED HER AND I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED WHEN SHE HAD LIKE 2 MINUTES OF SCREEN TIME 😭
the sequel: would you rather 😂
honestly this show was almost everything i could ask for cause i’m also a academically ambitious hot-headed tamil girl living in south california struggling with mental health and making stupid mistakes that are kinda selfish and struggling with my relationship with my mom and the list goes on. this show and everyone reaction of support made me feel sm more confident in myself and made me feel better for making mistakes and i just felt rlly seen
i really wanted to see paxton's sister Rebecca this season ;-;
Omg I forgot about her 😮
OKAY, I had to pause this video in the middle of watching it to a) thank you for your opinions on Devi’s mental health journey. Seeing one of us (I’m a south Asian American) go through the journey of therapy and really reflect was so beautiful. I’m a therapist so I definitely have a bias but I thought it was so thoughtfully done. That scene with her therapist 🥹
And b) YES TO YOUR COMMENT ABO IT BEN BEING THE WORST OPTION.
And JUSTICE FOR ANEESA PLEASE
OK, also yes to the through line of Nalini’s and Devi’s relationship and of the development of Paxton’s character 💕
I was so happy with the way they rounded out some of the storylines and this video actually enhanced my appreciation for it (you know, when I am finally able to set my dissatisfaction with the Devi-Ben relo to the side lol).
YESS I WANT A COLLEGE SPIN OFF TOO
Ben and Devi should have never been end game. I don't understand how they made her basically end up with her Bully. I personally feel like Devi and Devi should've been end game.
They need a sequel called never have I ever will with Devi in college
LOVVE THIS SHOWWW great job analyzing it
I loved it was always a show I related to in a lot of ways.
I'm so sad it's over :(
This season was satisfying for me , and I enjoyed seeing the character development Devi had
No one's mentioned: The worldly-ness to add an esteemed HBCU for Fabiola 🎉
Including Howard University was brilliant and dignified, it didn't feel like they were pandering.
i really disliked ben and devi ending together. if i'm being honest, in the first half of the season i kinda wished she would end up with paxton but just because i really like him as a person/character, and after everything they've went through i can understand why it didn't happen (and i really liked the whole paxton-ms thompson arc). so, in that sense, i was hoping devi would end up "alone". i never liked ben and i admit i understand the whole enemies to lovers trope but it just didn't ~click for me in that case. they've been hurtful for eachother in the entire series and even in the brief moments where they were together it just didn't work and the last season starts literally showcasing us this (like ben LITERALLY says it's better if they aren't dating). this ending was lowkey predictable if you know how mindy works but i really feel like the season was building up to the moment when devi realizes she's much more than the traumatized kid in the start of season 1. AND IT REALLY DID A GREAT JOB DOING THAT but the thing with ben is that i think it just brings back to her highschool self again and contradicts all the development these two had (individually and together as enemies to lovers to friends to whatever) idk
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO UPLOAD THIS ONE MY DAY IS MADE 🩷🩷🩷
Literally it should’ve been Paxton idc idc mindy only picked Ben bc he reminds her of her husband lol I never found them cute and I doubt there relationship will last and I hate how they tried to make Paxton a whole grown men just so he wouldn’t end up with Devi like that man was a year older than her lmao
I know right! Like they could've kept Paxton in college and then let Devi go to his college so that they could be together
No it’s too weird, he was a teacher at the time.
But Devi wanted to go to Princeton. Why make her follow Paxton to college.
@@leigha3873 THIS RIGHT HERE!!!👏🏾👏🏾
I do not think Paxton should have ended up with the teacher.
I hope Anessa gets their own spin off
I agree with being disapionted that Devi ended up with Ben. I knew it was inevitable but I didn't want it to be true. I am with the mom and the Principle saying, "Really Ben Gross!? How?"
I didn’t mind Devi getting with Ben that much i love a good enemies to lovers and they were really funny also I know this happend Ed in season 2 but how did Paxton get ran over by a car and only got a broken arm and then everybody acted like it was the end of his life when he went back to being fine but anyways I just kept swapping teams with ben and Paxton
Season 1:ben I died every scene she had with Paxton
Season 2:Paxton because he started liking Devi again but beginning of season was ben
Season 3:Paxton was great and ben felt thrown aside for half of it
Season 4:ben but it felt like the only reason they made Paxton drop out and become a teacher so it would be ben

I was a little disappointed by the lack of focus on Aneesa, and how she seemed to disappear into the background. But it's possibly explained by Megan Suri receiving a lead role in a horror movie, so needing less screentime to prepare.

This is exactly how I felt! I love their friendship but looking back it was always clear she wasn't going to end up with him.
totally agree
I agree with you! The chemistry between Devi and Ethan was unmatched 🤣
@@sfjvariety582 Devi has iron will, I don't think I'd be able to break things off with him like that 😭😭

@@to_be_consumed Honnestly, also it's the way Devi just brushed off their breakup as if there wasn't any chemistry in the first place 😭
FR THOUGH. Almost every series the characters get into big collages so easily. It’s so unrealistic 😭
I’m gonna miss this show. The first season got me through quarantine
So sad.
they are such a cute little nerdy couple
@@seducedbysasquatch Indeed!
Devi's final scene with her therapist talking about her growth had me in TEARS. Definetly one of my favorite scenes.
Bro, Ethan even with that less of a role, took my breath away like BRO IS MAJESTIC and the way he acts so perfectly as the knee-bucklingly hot bad boy was amazing...I am just happy I got to experience that
Yesss, I usually cringe at a bad boy love interest, but for some reason Michael Cimino as Ethan...made...me...DROOL

HEAVY ON IT
Same
Same I was so confused when she showed back up outta nowhere, at first I assumed she'd been written out altogether and she may as well have been.
Not me
I thought it was really nice that they included that Devi wanted to go to Princeton her entire life because it held sentiment to her about her dad. That explained so much about her character and made me feel for her
Ethan was meant to be eye candy and for once I was actually enjoying the candy
I feel like Devi should have stayed SINGLE. Ben wasn’t right for her. It felt so forced and last minute.
I honestly don't get everyone's obsession with Ethan he was there for like a second and didn't impact me at all lol.
@@kaeyasl1t Don't misunderstand me, I don't care about Ethan either. I'm just using him to highlight how Ben is the worst person Devi has dated. Like she was treated better in that relationship than the one with Ben, and he's supposed to be shitty. That was the point. I didn't even notice Ethan never showed up again after the break up.
i didnt expect to cry like a baby during the end!! this series would have changed my life if it had came out when I was in HS
I also love how they portray the university cycle, and how life doesn't end after an "acceptance letter" and that it might not feel as great as you anticipate but in the end is always the best choice, and that its okay to let go of the life you envisioned as a pre-teen when u didnt truly know yourself or the world fully, but that doesn't mean you wont regret if ya don't try!
i waited patiently for this and it came sooner than i thought😭
i try to deliver!
seeing the therapy placement in this show actually inspired me to start going 😭 mindy....u ate with this one. u ate with this one.
I also loved how Devi became more comfortable with embracing her culture and feeling more connected to it from season 1
It would have been so underwhelming if she ended up alone
@jessicaa4436 valid, but with that, "signing off for now" only leads me to believe this is possibly not the last time we'll see Devi or that friend group.
I think Aneesa was also done dirty, and I wish I could’ve seen more of her. So happy to see a story of the jock who dropouts 2 weeks into his freshmen year in college, and still have a happy ending and figuring himself out. I was shocked by the endgame relationship ending, I would’ve wanted to see her be alone. Love your video, so sad this series is ending 😢
I really enjoyed this season! What bothers me is that Ethan is introduced for like 4 episodes and then literally disappears.
high school exes dont usually stick around, especiallyh when they dont have the same friend group
@@Fan_Girl-xd8wy yea that definitely makes sense but i thought it was just very sudden how he "disappeared"
Yh I was not down for devi and ben it just felt so meeeeehhhh, like of everyone it was HIM reaaaaallly?😂😂 that’s the best she could do.
I really didn’t like Lindsay she was really annoying and always acted as if she was so mature and grown up to make Paxton feel bad.
the lack of aneesa was so sad 😭😭
I think she should’ve ended with Paxton. Paxton realizes he loves Devi because she pushes him to be a better person and because she believes in him. Ben realizes he loves Devi because of a wet dream....
Ughhh no
Benvi < Devi being single
Also Anessa barely being in the final season was a crime like wtf she was easily the best character
i like ben the best for devi. they drive each other academically, they are competitive to the point they motivate each other. they have very similar senses of humor and interests, and are both huge dorks with confidence and family issues. no other boy was as consistently there for Devi as Ben was.

@@Fan_Girl-xd8wy you totally missed my point 😭
@@Fan_Girl-xd8wy
Ignoring that Paxton was still a great love interest until they made him a teacher in s4 (which aged him too much for Devi in the audience’s mind) you do realize that Des being a momma’s boy, Ethan being a criminal, and Paxton somehow never actually ending up with Devi is due to the writers (so the OP’s comment still holds true).
