Devi's grandma was also a refreshing character. As Indians we are mostly fed toxic, unsupportive and evil mother in laws, but seeing Devi's grandma be so supportive of Nalini's relationship and her care and affection for Nalini was brilliantly portrayed.

I liked seeing both the grandmas because it's cool seeing how different they are, like almost polar opposites, and it makes sense too considering how different Devi's parents are (from what we know of her dad) it makes you understand more about why her mom is the way she is and her dad too.

I feel like if Devi had confessed to Aneesa IMMEDIATELY that day that she was the one who accidentally started the rumor Aneesa might’ve reconsidered the suspension. Cause the fact that Devi lied to her for days and then tried to pin it on another student makes it so much worse.

    • @Akira-dc7is

The things is they’re trying to portray a real teen. And real teens make dumb decisions. Which I like. I don’t condone her behavior, but it’s a good way to portray teens now a days. People think they make mistakes that get resolved right away. It takes years for someone to properly change, especially someone like Davey, who clearly has anger issues. Personally I’ve never seen a realistic portrayal of someone with that personality. She’s also 16-17 and is figuring out life. She’s it meant to be a perfect “flawed” character. The one thing I like about this show is that she makes mistakes literally every episode.

Seriously. I liked this season a lot but I just don’t understand why that was drawn out like that. That whole storyline should have been 1-2 episodes TOPS, and it went on for like 4? (Including the apology craze) It just felt unnecessary to me 🤷🏾‍♀️

@@ABCD-vm1mx Devi isn't a realistic portrayal of an average teenager though, teens can be selfish assholes but the sheer extent of Devi's narcissism and lack of regard for other people's feelings is pathological and not normal. Especially not a character whose heart is supposed to be at the right place but Devi isn't only an inconsiderate adolescent she's often downright cruel and is incapable of seeing that until after the damage is done and everyone rightfully blames her.

as a queer, Indian, second generation American teen just the fact that Devi is the main character of the show is something i have never seen before in American media. This show is far from perfect, but i have to admit, there were moments where i could genuinely relate to Devi's experiences and it made me feel validated. Im glad they finally addressed some of her issues, but I am really rooting for Devi to become more self aware, less borderline toxic , and better at communicating how she feels. Im looking forward to your next video :)

Thanks for your replies! I would like to add that grief stricken characters, especially in teenage years, often tend to tunnel vision their way to a goal and power through, and in that process, don't look left and right who their hurting, in their way. And once the damage is done, their still so subconsciously hurt that they can sometimes fail to empathise properly with anyone else. Which is why it takes Devi and (Edge of 17 protagonist) so long to figure out what they've done and why it's wrong. These characters are quite well written I feel!

We have multiple shots of Devi feeling terrible, we have McEnroe constantly voicing her true feeling, and she also admitted the truth to Aneesa because of her guilt. And we know from the series she loses control of her mouth when she's in a temper, so she says something she doesn't know is true. Idk. Read it how you will, man. I just gave my opinion. I have THOUGHTS.
*Devi*: Extremely flawed but I feel like her character development will be a multi-season build up because she is the main character. Though she can be really self-centered, I think she focuses on trivial things to distract her from more important issues in her life. It's a defense mechanism, not a good one but that's the plot so...
*Paxton*: It's the character development for me. Damn, I was really team Ben but Paxton came through this time.
*Ben*: Meh. I don't like how he used Aneesa as a replacement for Devi then got mad when she moved on. Pick a struggle sir.
*Kamala*: Yassss, go on with your bad self. I loved to see her stand up for herself and represent WOC in stem and the struggle of breaking the glass ceiling.
*Nalini*: She really pissed me off this season. I get that she was struggling but the way she gaslit Devi in that one scene and called her crazy for thinking she was dating Common. I felt like that hurt me personally. But I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt because she is also struggling with loss and trying to raise Devi.
*Fabiola*: I wish they gave her more time to figure out what her identity was now that she came out. I feel like we didn't get to see enough of that.
*Eleanor*: I feel like they could have given her a better arc than making her subservient to a white man in an abusive relationship. Like she's better than that. I wanna see her acting and her career goals progress.

I don’t think Ben “used” Anessa. He was trying to get over Devi as he thought she never loved him to begin with. The actor says Ben genuinely likes Aness, and I think he likes her too, also he probably unconsciously saw Devi in her. But the thing is she is not Devi and Ben realizes that as the season goes on too. He also realizes that loving someone and being compatible with them is not the same thing as liking someone. Hopefully, Devi will realize this too. I love both Paxton and Anessa, and wish happiness for them, but Ben and Devi are the soulmates.

Glad we got some paxton development but I do feel like they did Ben dirty this season. I thought his character last season was pretty interesting, the way he feels so lonely at home and interacting with Devi's family made him feel happy. Speaking of which, I like how in this season, no matter how angry he was with Devi he was still respectful to her family.
Yeah going after Aneesa was pretty immature but you can tell he only did it cuz devi hurt him so bad so I don't even blame him. I think it affected him way more than paxton but we just didn't get to see it much. I'm surprised he forgave her at all.

His parents consistently choose their careers or their selfish ambitions over him, and he doesn’t have any true friends. So when Devi two timed him and then chased after Paxton, it was new trauma and childhood trauma wrapped up in one. Which doesn’t excuse his poor choice in getting with the only other Indian girl and Devi’s good friend, but explains it. I think ben needs a therapist too.

Her whole high school she strived to be unique, popular and recognized, she wanted everyone to know and consider her so bad. And she figured her best asset for that was that she was the only brown girl in school, and she looked different. And it kinda gave her that main character, "i'm unique' confidence. I think deep down she pretty much assumed that no one would give her the time of day if she wasn't a POC. So when she saw aneesa arrive, she freaked out because suddenly, she wasn't unique. Suddenly, she wasn't the only brown girl and in her mind, the only thing that made her stand out was now more common.

Yes, Paxton forgave her, but it took time and she went without him for multiple episodes’ time. Then with the rumor about Aneesa she owned up to it and got suspended from school. But thats also the beauty of Paxton - he was too simple minded to bear grudges. He is willing to forgive Devi time and again and genuinely cared for her. Whenever Devi was in trouble he helped her without 2nd thought. Ben on the other hand, was so sore about being Devi's 2nd choice, that he shut her out of his life the entire season. But I do agree that she should end up with someone else but also believe that ending up single or with Ben wouldn’t be bad (plus if Paxton shapes up his act even more, they could be a potential school match). This is long but I have a lot of thoughts. Firstly, I really don’t see how Paxton has become “better” this season. He was okay last season and I was rooting for him in the first half, but I seriously couldn’t stand him this season. Him blaming Devi for walking into the street, his monumental development being him picking up a book, blaming Devi for not doing well on a test that she gave him flashcards for and rightfully telling him he also needs to put in effort, still being embarrassed to have his friends seeing Devi next to him at the dance, and STILL needing outsiders telling him to go out with Devi. I also feel like some of the Ben slander is unwarranted. It’s understandable if you find aspects of his personality obnoxious, but I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s weird that he would date Aneesa. He was (is) obviously in love with Devi so the cheating hurt him a lot more than it hurt Paxton which is why it took him longer to forgive her. I don’t think he immediately wanted to date Aneesa as soon as she came, but she was the only other person who enjoyed being with him. And besides thinking that Devi no longer liked him and moved on, I don’t think it’s odd for him to ask Aneesa out. We also barely saw Ben this season but even then, he was trying to help Devi do better even when he was still mad at her. Some of his advice even paralleled what her dad tells her in her dreams. If anything, I feel like Ben’s small development this season was more interesting than Paxton’s bigger one.

One thing that stood out to me was how Devi gave advice to Kamala. While Devi has anger issues that she has problems controlling, anger also can be a useful tool to give the drive to fight against injustice, and that's just how Kamala uses it in the end. It reminds me of a book by Gandhis grandson called "The Gift of Anger".
I actually think that Devi as a character is really three dimensional. Devi has some narcissistic traits there (which does not necessarily mean she's evil, just a little self-centered and problematic) and I would love to see how this realistically evolves over time. I would never see her become a goody two shoes, but I think for her to grow she has to learn that her superficial needs for boyfriends and validation mask some deeper rooted issues and needs. Also, that she has to behave a certain way if she wants to be accepted socially.
What I really hated was the whole love triangle trope. Like, come on, it's so overused and kinda cringy. We know how this ends, we've seen it enough times. Also, one of the most unpopular girls suddenly has two admirers. Yeah, sure.
Paxtons arc I actually did like a lot, and at some point I thought he was more friendly than Ben. Even when he's wronged he values friendship, that was already shown in season one. Ben on the other hand is just petty. But Paxton ending up with Devi? They don't fit at all. They could've just stayed friends, or friends with benefits, whatever.
I hope for the next season that it will recycle less common tropes.

And so whoever becomes endgame, it's gonna leave people divided and disappointed. So, I think the only thing the show can do is not make her end up with any of them and go off to work on herself. I feel like the show has been focusing so hard on Devi's strained relationships to the point where what really needs to be addressed is being completely swept under the rug: her trauma with her father. The way she's coping with that trauma and avoiding it with reckless and risque behavior NEEDS to be a topic, since it's a huge part in what makes her a horrible friend/daughter/girlfriend to begin with. Her therapist is really the only person in her life that presses to address it. I really thought with the whole voicemail bit they were going to touch up on how Devi's need for male validity and attention (as seen many times in the first and second seasons) perhaps stems from losing her father. He played a major role in reinforcing her self confidence and rational-thinking skills growing up since Nalani was absent being the family's breadwinner. And even with extremely supportive friends like Fabiola and Eleanor, the absence of Mohan has clearly left an void where she makes Ben and Paxton (knowingly or not) fill in for comfort. I liked the whole dream bit where Mohan comes and lets her know she's more than just a secret lover to Paxton and she deserves to be loved openly, but I wish it pushed more in a direction where it stressed Devi doesn't NEED romantic love to begin with and she needs to nuture herself and the people who DO care for her.

i also loved paxton this season. bc when do you ever have teen drama's where actual schoolwork becomes integral to the character's arc? i think his character is very refreshing bc he seems very surface level dumb jock but there's sm more to him. he pretends to care about popularity when he really just uses it to hide how insecure he is about not being smart. and he never learned to be anything more than just a pretty face bc not even his parents expected more from him. idk i think it's just very interesting.
aneesa was great and she deserves sm better. devi did her wrong and ben... don't even start me on ben bc why does he treat his girlfriends so poorly?? he literally forgets their entire existence. yeah she deserves better.

season 1 it's very clear. then this season she agrees to a relationship with ben bc paxton "doesn't see her like that" but when he says that he does, she starts dating him even tho she's already in a relationship with ben. then she runs after him at the party and leaves ben. she rebuilds her relationship with paxton and doesn't chase after ben up until paxton friendzones her. but as soon as he knocks on her window, ben's out again. and then she only gives ben attention when paxton doesn't give her what she wants from him but as soon as he does ben falls to the sidelines again.
with eleanor's speech i do see the set up for ben and devi again tho but this show and devi are so messy it could honestly switch up again. i mean this season things blew up so fast too...

As much as I loved all the other characters development, I really related the Paxton because that was basically me I was like always a dumb kid and it seems that I didn't get encouraged enough, it's more like people would scrutinized me for my own failures or make it seem like I was inherently a failure in however, Paxton actually figuring out and working hard towards his education felt like my whole life flashed before my eyes.

i can only repeat myself - devi being "problematically flawed" is what makes her so relatable to me.
everyone has flaws, we're all human, blah, blah, but in the end the main character is usually still super pretty, has flaws that are in one way or form (considered!) their fault or whatever makes them oh so human is actually not that big a deal. that's easy, you can more easily justify if that character screws up, more people can relate to that because you basically have the average person, they're more _likeable_ to the majority of the audience and so on. not so easy when a character 1) really _really_ or 2) constantly screws up.
now, you say devi offers a bunch of weak apologies to the people she hurt - that just adds to her "problematic" personality, she screws up big time and then doesn't know how to fix it. doesn't mean she's not genuinely sorry or she doesn't care because she clearly does.
many people are so understanding with mental illness (which is (almost) ALWAYS a flaw, a problem... just most of the time for only _one_ person), but as soon as it's "problematic" for yourself (as a mentally healthy person)... they should go see a therapist or keep it together while with others. it doesn't work like that. the whole point is that you don't have much control over what you're doing and only after realize the shit you've done.
it's shitty for EVERYONE involved, i know that mental illness is not an excuse, simply an explanation, but as you can see here, no one cares about that anyway - all they see is problematic behavior when that's by far not all a person is.

I feel like Devi was even more childish in the second season than in the first. And honestly I hoped for her to end up with anyone other than Paxton. He might have developed a little bit but to me he is still very toxic and not trustworthy so i'm team Ben all the way, even though he has his flaws. In my opinion Kamala had the most interesting story and I LOVED how she didn't let people disrespect her even after her boyfriend told her to just ignore it.

100% agree with you. Paxton's characterization made me like him better, but I still don't think his relationship with Devi is good. Ben and Devi at least challenge each other in good ways and generally seem to get along better when Devi isn't being awful. First and foremost Devi needs to focus on herself before Ben but I'm still rooting for them whenever the Series Finale happens 😩

I never thought ben was good especially for Devi especially when in the first season he called her crazy or something for paralysing herself and that’s the same thing she talked to her therapist about in this season so his comment affected her and also the UN thing was really rude
Whereas Paxton didn’t know about her existence to hurt and her and when he did know about her he only hurt her once at the end of second season that too with a good reason that he told her. So I’m team Paxton

I do like Devi, I'M SO SORRY!! Hahaha. It's just that she is a relatable character and also is perfectly written. She's a teen girl, she's suffering from depression and anxiety and we shouldn't expect less from a girl in her situation. Depression in teenagehood is not the same as with adults, actually, teens tend more to irritability, violent behaviour and so on. It may seem a small issue for you, but it's hard for them to answer otherwise.
I like that this serie represents teens as that and not young adults.
BTW, I'm studying for psychology if u ask.

6:16 imo the weird thing isn't Ben being interested in aneesa is her being interested back?? Like she is new, pretty, and nice, gets along with anyone immediately, this is high school lol everyone would be interested in her, but why would SHE go for Ben, there's probably a ton cuter boys interested in her, isn't Ben generally known to be unlikable and uncool in this high school??? No shade to Ben's actor I think he's attractive just in the world of this show his character isn't high on anyone's list.

He’s all into school and studying hard and Aneesa is very disinterested in that. I agree with so many of the points you made - it’s especially hard for me to watch how toxic Devi can be to her friends but I’m really rooting for s3 being dedicated to her figuring herself out and learning what it means to be *there* for the people in her life, like how her dad apologized to her mom. What I personally love about this show is the depiction of anger as a result of trauma/mental health. I know for me my depression/anxiety more often then not expresses itself as anger and frustration and I talk it out on ppl without meaning to. and bc of that, I see so much of myself in Devi. When we talk about depression or anxiety, people think about apathy, low self esteem, low energy, panic attacks, etc. which are all very important but anger isn’t necessarily the first thing discussed. And I love that it’s something depicted often in the show bc it’s genuine and illustrates that mental health is so complex. I just feel so seen, also bc of her relationship with her mother. It hits so deep 😭
