Kill Bill Movie Description:
A former assassin, known simply as The Bride (Uma Thurman), wakes from a coma four years after her jealous ex-lover Bill (David Carradine) attempts to murder her on her wedding day. Fueled by an insatiable desire for revenge, she vows to get even with every person who contributed to the loss of her unborn child, her entire wedding party, and four years of her life. Kill Bill: Volume 1 is a 2003 American martial arts film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. It stars Uma Thurman as the Bride, who swears revenge on a team of assassins (Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, and Vivica A. Fox) and their leader, Bill (David Carradine), after they try to kill her and her unborn child. Her journey takes her to Tokyo, where she battles the yakuza.
Tarantino conceived Kill Bill as an homage to grindhouse cinema, including martial arts films, samurai cinema, blaxploitation, and spaghetti Westerns. It features an anime sequence by Production I.G. It is the first of two Kill Bill films made in a single production; the films were originally set for a single release, but the film, with a runtime of over four hours, was divided in two. The film grossed over $180 million against a $30 million budget; it was Tarantino's highest-grossing film until Inglourious Basterds (2009). Kill Bill: Volume 2 was released the following year.

Obligatory fun fact: O-Ren says, in Japanese, "I hope you saved your energy. If you haven't you may not last 5 minutes."
From the moment that O-Ren steps forward and the music kicks in, it is exactly 4 minutes and 59 seconds until the Bride delivers the fatal blow, scalping O-Ren.
Interesting fact. My one problem is the O-Ren battle is that the fight with Gogo was much more of a challenge, more unique and interesting than O-Ren's sword fight.

@@Nepthu Tarantino was making a movie referencing classic samurai fights (among other things). Making the final battle flashy and over the top would defeat that purpose.
Gogo was the anime fight. O-Ren was the classy samurai duel.
@@Nepthu Gogo was only a challenge cuz of her weapon. Beatrix was at a disadvantage with her katana while GoGo could fight at a distance while being amazingly skilled with it.
@@Nepthu I always thought that her fight with O-Ren was more like a game of chess than a blunt sword fight. Not in a boring 'ew, dull chess' way, but in the 'you carefully have to plan out every move, be able to almost predict your opponents play and hold back your trump card for that one moment your opponent makes a mistake' way. Tastes are different 😉
The choreography was done by Yuen Wo-Ping, the same man who did the Matrix movies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

In the behind scenes, he said Tarantino brought him in but there wasn't much for him to do. Tarantino had already figured most of how it would work. Easiest money he made.

They kinda did. That character & sequence was based off 1973's _Lady Snowblood_ and 1994's _Leon: The Professional_ (definitely add _Leon_ to your watch list).

Really all of Kill Bill is inspired by Lady Snowblood. He essentially just expanded the plot into 2 movies and put his personality into it. Love it
I love the insinuated relationship between The Bride and O-Ren which is some the best read between the lines storytelling in cinema. You can tell they had a strong friendship in the past with their “silly rabbit” in jokes with each other. Also out of all her target besides Bill you can feel her devastation having to kill her former best friend at the end of this. From their last exchange with one another both of them really wished things could’ve turned out differently.

You nailed it! You can tell they were close and had deep respect for each other. I also think it was because of that respect the Beatrix went for O-ren first, she knew if O-ren knew she was coming that she would never get close to her.
I agree, I think at some point O-Ren realized she had become everything she swore to destroy. She knew from her own revenge story that as long as the Bride was alive somewhere, their meeting was inevitable. Like the other Vipers, they all welcomed and hoped for the Bride to put end to things.
It's no secret...Tarantino is known for crafting his stories as homage to his cinematic influences, his respect for the power of a soundtrack to set a tone and add depth to characters and circumstances, and his unabashed foot fetish. Those three elements are in all his films, and yet he pulls it off in a way that never gets stale. True genius!

@@Momon143 just cause someone is strong enough to forgive you doesn't exempt the choices you made. The guy can be a real asshole and has some weird fetishes like spitting/choking on women and worshipping their feet. That being said he's one of my favorite directors. No one's perfect.
He rips off little known Japanese films a lot of the time. This is almost a scene by scene remake of lady snow blood.

The first time I saw this movie was at a Screen Actors Guild screening with a Q&A with Uma Thurman and she said that she’d just given birth before she started the training for Kill Bill...that may have been one of the reasons it was so easy for her to tap into the emotions of that scene.
This movie was originally called "The Bride". So the female lead had no name. Hence they beeped out her name.
And when we find out her last name is Kiddo, we recall that Bill is always calling her "Kiddo."

Sally Menke was Quentin's beloved editor for his films through Inglorious Basterds, until her untimely death. Cast and crew would say hi to Sally as the reels would start (because of course she would see them all in the editing room).

What I really liked about the Beatrix vs Oren fight was you could tell, it was a fight neither of them wanted, but it had to be done on principle. The two were clearly good friends in the past, respect high for one another. Hell, right after the fight, she sits down, feeling conflicted over what she did.
Always loved how the animated section of O'ren transitions from a more older classical style when she is young to a more 'modern' style as she is older fully grown into an assassin.
The void David Carradine left in the world is still felt, to this day. RIP

The scene where Elle changes into the nurses outfit is an homage to Brian DePalma's Dressed to Kill. Recommended. Very Hitchcockian thriller.
Tarantino is always a wizard at putting together phenomenal soundtracks... his knowledge of obscure cinema is only rivalled by his knowledge of great tunes from all times and places.
RZA deserves some credit for the soundtrack as well

You'll note she does try to spare both the 'not-quite adults': she offers (even begs a little) GoGo (17 years old) a chance to back down (even though I feel she did the world, and men esp a favor by killing GoGo who was pretty and cute but also a little sociopath) and she spanks this 15 or 16 year old. Seems he was probably a 'new recruit' as he could barely use the sword even if he wasn't peeing himself. I'm glad she spared him, maybe he got smart. And my God, she wants her revenge but you can already tell she's sick of having to kill and kill and kill to get it.
I always liked those moments too. Lol.

If you watch the deleted scenes, she disarms the 15 year old kid several times and spares him during the fight, until the end, she's so exasperated by him coming back to fight that she spanks him 😂
Still one of the best movies ever made! Best reaction I've seen to, nobody else has gotten so excited or interested and this movie definitely deserves every bit of the excitement and hype!! 🤯👍

The scene with Hattori Hanzo (Sonny Chiba) is one of my favorite of all time from any movie. Also, the sound editing in Kill Bill is phenomenal.

That music is actually from "The Five Fingers of Death" which was the inspiration for Marvel's "Iron Fist"
The fast trumpet music that plays while she's on her motorcycle is the 60's jazz version of "Flight of The Bumblebee" a classical music piece used as the theme for "The Green Hornet" starring Bruce Lee. You caught the yellow outfit reference. The song that plays when O Ren and her crew enter the restaurant is the theme for "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" a TV show starring action hero Sonny Chiba... who is the swordsmith Hattori Hanzo - which was the name of ANOTHER character Sonny Chiba portrayed in ANOTHER show, etc, etc, etc...
And the two songs played when Elle is driving toward Budd's trailer and Beatrix is walking down the highway toward it are both from the classic cult film ROAD TO SALINA with Robert Walker, Jr., Mimsy Farmer, and Rita Hayworth. I discovered this awesome film on TBS back in the 80s and finally found a bootleg DVD of it last year.
Tarantino is a master of using existing music in his movies. In my opinion only surpassed by Stanley Kubrick, who used almost no music composed for his movies.
QT limits himself mostly to 60s and 70s music. But then, he makes contemporary films. Not sure some funky 60s hit had fitted in Barry Lyndon... ;)
fun fact:
the crazy 88 scene isn't black and white solely because of censorship... it's black and white because they ran out of fake blood part way through filming and had to use water instead. The colour version is on youtube
No, it’s just black and white because that’s what Tarantino wanted to do. It’s in the original script. Doesn’t have anything to do with running out of fake blood or censorship...although he did do it because that’s how they censored old movies on tv when he was a kid.
@@DIOBrando-ij2bp it was both, according to Tarantino himself. It was an homage to the 1970s martial arts movies that were on TV, but shown in black and white specifically to get around the censors. He did the same in Kill Bill for the same reason and as an homage. So it is what he wanted, but it also was for censorship purposes.
@@clonexx I can’t remember where he said it, I think it may have been one of the The Rewatchables podcast he did, (may have been the New Beverly podcast) but this topic came up and Tarantino said the Black & White didn’t actually have anything to do with getting an R rating. He even said the woman he was talking to at the MPAA told him he didn’t need to switch it to black and white. It’s just something that’s there because he wanted it. Pretty sure it was a podcast from one of those two things; guess it could have also been when he was on the History of Horror podcast with Eli Roth, but I’m pretty sure it was one he did last year.
Now maybe he came up with that idea to get around the mpaa because of some stuff from the '80s that got X ratings at first and needed to be cut down like RoboCop and Scarface, but they were cool with the House of Blue Leaves fight being in color by the early 2000s and told him he didn’t have to switch it. Japanese version has a couple other changes like Boss Matsumoto being one screen longer after his death, and Kiddo cutting off Sofie Fatale‘s other arm in the trunk.
they made that part in black and white because it was too graphic. I think only few asian countries gets to see it in full color, because their movies tend to be also very graphic

Elmore Leonard and Quentin Tarantino are masters of the quick sharp dialogue, I wish they worked together on more projects before Leonard's passing.

On the topic of a Kill Bill song becoming more famous than the original, "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" (仁義なき戦い = Jingi Naki Tatakai) used to be a VERY famous song, as the theme song of a Yakuza drama/movie of the same name, but now many young people associate it with Kill Bill. But overseas, Jingi is unheard of, so almost everyone thinks it's a Kill Bill track.

That is the dagger they use to commit Ritual suicide. She was contemplating killing herself before the rest of her crazy 88 showed up. That's why she asks if she thought it would really be that easy.
I don’t know if anyone posted this here first with everyone dropping their knowledge on this movie, but my favorite missable bit is Bill’s presence in O-ren’s animated origin story.
He is the creepy underling with the sword that kills her Father and is basically the only reason her Dad doesn’t wreck them all. It’s not obvious but if you notice the focus given to not only that character’s sword in that sequence but the numerous rings on his fingers it is obviously meant to evoke the early scene where we see Bill’s hand adorned with rings on the hilt of of his Hanzo Sword. As confirmation, we learn in part II that Bill spent time working for others before he started working for himself.
I have always wondered if O-ren ever found out. Maybe that is why she left the Deadly Vipers, maybe she was plotting revenge herself before The Bride killed her. We will never know, but I still wonder.

The anime sequence is by Madhouse, one of the best anime studios. They made shows like One Punch Man and Death Note, and movies like Ninja Scroll and Redline. If you like the hand-drawn style, Redline would be a great movie for a reaction, it has some of the most beautiful animation of all time.
Yeah, came to see if anyone pointed this out. The Boondocks is a great show, but they don't have animation on this level. Japanese animation is different from Western animation. You could notice it in this scene, a lot of exaggerated motion, it makes it so that you can feel the force of the movement.

No, there never was anything about a third movie. Who are you kidding? It was Leon: The Professional that was supposed to have a sequel where Mathilda trains to be an assassin.
One of my favorite uses of effects in this entire film is the b&w transition just before 22:00. I love how the color bleeds away as she pulls her arm back to reveal she ripped out man’s eyeball. It was friggin immaculate!

Imagine seeing that cliffhanger before Vol. 2 was released. I saw this in theaters at 9 and thought the ending was evil. As an adult, it is a brilliant ending.
So the band that was playing the Whoo-Hoo song is a small band Tarentino discovered when he was in Japan location scouting. He was actually in a store when he heard the song playing on the store’s PA system, and like it so much he asked the employee about it. Turns out it was her personal cd she bought from a live performance. Tarentino knew he would forget about it later if he didn’t get a copy of the cd right then, so he paid her a buttload of cash for her personal cd. Later on, he looked up the band and loved their look and vibe, so he put them in the movie. And that’s actually them playing in the club.
Couple of things for you... the way the O-Ren fight takes its time is VERY old school Kurosawa and other Samurai films. I would HIGHLY recommend you check out some of Kurosawa's films.
Also, if you want to get into some Anime but don't want to do big long series, I would recommend stand alone films like Akira, the original Ghost in the Shell movie, or some of the Miyazaki films like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. Or you can enjoy shorter series like Cowboy Bebop or Gurren Lagaan which are both only 26 episodes. Either way, been digging your channel for a couple weeks now. Stay safe and take care out there

I grew up in the 70s and back then martial and kun fu movies were everywhere especially in the black community..so this movie and Quentin is reaching back from that time..with the songs the dialogue and the camera movements and the.acting..it is definitely the 70s style...also great reaction

I love Kill Bill. Funny thing is that I did a video essay in a Media class for college using this movie. The final fight was so good for my report that my professor loved it.

If you look closely at the airplane scene, you’ll notice that just about everyone else on the plane also had a sword.

Kill Bill was my first Tarantino film… it was absolutely NOT what I was expecting. I saw a display for it at Walmart and was curious. Wasn’t prepared for the ride. Haha.
The Fight Choreographer is Yuen Wo Ping. The same guy who did the Matrix Choreography. Chinese Choreographer who went to the same school as Jackie Chan, Samo Hung and Tiger Yuen. Four of the best Chinese action movie makers for decades. Samo made a movie that won the Chinese version of an Oscar about all their childhoods called Painted Faces. They were small children. Their parents basically sold them to the Circus.
Your reaction reminds me of seeing this in the theater when it was released. EVERYONE was hyped at all these great scenes. Nothing better than a crowd reaction when a highly anticipated movie more than delivers.
Love the givaway of the Bride's name right off the bat yet done in a way that makes it sound like its just the term used in the moment.

The switch to B & W during the Crazy 88 fight scene was actually mandated to keep the film's rating down due to all the blood. I've always felt it works great in signifying the "blind rage" she needed to fight off everyone.
24:00 - interesting how you mention the lighting looks like a play. His frequent cinematographer Robert Richardson has a kind of signature style where he backlights actors with a really intense hot light above and behind them, then sometimes uses a lens filter that makes that light glow even more and create a halo effect around them. It’s cool how he does this even when logically there wouldn’t be a light above the characters like in the intro scene of Inglourious Basterds. But it just works dramatically and looks amazing. Check out the films he did with other directors too like Scorsese in Casino and Shutter Island!

First off My favorite Quentin Tarantino movie along with the second one. I’m telling my age but I believe I first saw the second movie when movies use to premiere on HBO and/or STARZ on Saturday nights 🤩 but I saw this one in theaters.

Late 90s and early 00s had femme fatales very common in movies, TV and Video games, however they were often Mary Sue characters with impenetrable plot armor and little emotional depth.
Thurman and Tarantino did such an amazing job of allowing The Bride to have some moments of emotional vulnerability amidst all her badassery.
Hey MellVerse, since you've liked this, Tarantino was inspired by the 1973 Japanese film Lady Snowblood when creating Kill Bill so I 100% recommend you watch it whenever you get the chance!

When this movie came out, I was 23 and Lucy Liu was still a major movie actress. Nowadays she's only doing TV series, so they don't have her in the same sort of "Holey Moley that's incredible" outfits that she had in the movies. I'll be looking forward to your reaction to the second film.

Many of Quentin Tarantino's films are good because he takes from a lot of (other peoplers) older movies and mixes them together. Many of the scenes and bits of this movie were taken from other films.

I would highly recommend Baron of Munchausen if you'd like to see more of Uma Thurman. Directed by Terry Gilliam, from Monthy Python. It also has Robin Williams and some of the actors from the Monthy Python troupe.
There was huge influence from Akira Kurosawa’s films here. That fight at the end is a shout to Yojimbo with the bamboo and the water sound with the big pause in fighting. Also the huge blood sprays is a nod to the old school samurai films aka Lonewolf and cub, Zatoichi the blind swordsman etc. Kurosawa’s Yojimbo and Seven Samurai are a must watch though.
This is my favourite movie and it’s my first time seeing a reaction to it, didn’t disappoint this was very entertaining!
