    For those who don't quite understand, what he is saying is that there is a low level cut-out switch at approximately 4-a5 volts. So If the battery sits too long and drains, which it realistically should not if it's plugged into a tool because the tool has a low level switch to stop draining the battery before it reaches this criteria, the battery has a cut-out switch so it cannot charge. So by going into the battery and bypassing the little brain and directly charging the cells up above the brain cut-out threshold, he tricks the brain by bypassing it and giving the cells enough power to get the brain to open the passage for charging again. This works about 70-90% of the time, but if you have a burned out cell you need to revert to another video. Thanks for your great short video!

    There's a dozen or more of these videos on RUclips, and I was happy I went with this one. Cuts to the chase; doesn't require me to hack my Ryobi charger. $15 trickle charger was worth the investment to get three formerly dead Ryobi lithium batteries in play again.

    I sometimes try these RUclips videos to fix things and they very rarely work. However, this time, everything worked perfectly and I know absolutely nothing about electronics! VERY clear instructions and showed me exactly what to do. I have no idea how to actually use a trickle charger or a multimeter but with this video I was able to fix my Ryobi 18 Volt battery and, more importantly, impress my wife with the blinking green light!!! Thanks so much for a great tutorial. I wonder if that process works on other similar batteries too. Keep up the good work. You are the MAN!

    Had a Ryobi 18v battery that died and wouldn't charge so I marked it bad and had planned on throwing it away. Before I got around to throwing it away a much newer battery did the same thing. I was thinking I would have to buy a couple of new batteries. I decided to do a search to see if anyone else had the same issue and I came across this video. Being a retired mechanic, I had everything necessary to try this process and it worked great. Took the batteries apart as shown in the video and used a small 12v charger touching the leads to the batter for only 1 minute. Both batteries are now charging great. Thank you for your video!

    I had a Ryobi 18 V battery that sat in my garage for over 18 months that would not take a charge.
    The "Fix" was fast...easy & safe.
    I used my 12VDC trickle charger ..held the "+" & the "- " cables to the battery posts for slightly over 2 minutes.
    I then put the battery into the Ryobi battery charger.
    The charger "Testing" cycle ran a little longer than normal then it started the charging cycle !
    I did not do any disassembly ...I didn't drill any holes !

    this is better than most videos on this platform, but the key problem is that you should have a professional charger like the imax b6ac v2 and attempt to charge each individual cell that makes up the pack to its normal voltage. another thing to keep in mind is that although it might charge to full it could have bad cells which could be contributing to poor life. these individual cells would need to be replaced with ones of the same specs in order to prevent damage. as I said in the beginning this is a much better video than most and should work for many people. I would urge caution to inexperienced people who think that applying voltage is going to solve their problems. I have seen many things that are a safety hazard and many videos don't take safety as a priority. just to let you non electronics savvy people know that it's not so much the voltage that can kill you, but it is the amperage that will do it. most current above 100ma could be lethal! take extreme caution. if you don't feel comfortable, leave it to a professional.

    Great video. I have four RYOBI "dead" batteries. Your video might just give them a new life. My plan is to use my trickle charger too. It's too bad that RIOBI, and others, don't have a way to prevent this from happening in the first place. But then they won't sell us new batteries thinking ours are trashed. I will be putting this video in my saved video folder.

      it's because the bms has no way to determine if the pack just has a dead cell or if one is actually shot, and when they become overly discharged and the individual cells aren't balanced there's always a risk of overheating and fire, that's the real reason why it happens. just take care of you're batteries, keep them out of temperature extremes and keep them charged up but don't over charge them. most people just use their drill once in a while and don't keep their packs charged. hot and cold don't help either.

      Because you're bypassing the circuit board that controls the charging and has been stopping it from charging. He does say that.

    • @BiggDouggie
      @BiggDouggie 7 дней назад

      The terminals at the top are what already read the charge and the circuit board is stopping it from charging in the first place. Bypassing it allows it to charge directly to a battery

    All my new Ryobi tools use a different battery, in that the charger contacts are on the opposite end (and the bottom of) the normal battery insertion port for the tools. How this might effect overcoming a 'dead' battery scenario is a bridge I will cross when I come to it.

    First video that explains why the batteries will not charge and how to get it working again .
    I think that there is a low voltage shut off in the circuit board so that the batterys can only be discharged to a certain precent to protect the batterys , and then if the voltage drops even lower it will not connect to recharge .

    Thankyou for this very helpful vid but the 12v trickle charge didn't work for me though here is an alternative for anyone else stuck with the same issue. I have an 18v 5.0Ah pack that was down to 15v preventing any charge so the 12v would obviously be too low of a kick-start where I found a 19v (3.95A) laptop charger and connected it the same way to the neg and pos for 10mins till it got to about 19.5v then put it back together where I used the original charger to maintain it's nominal value of 20.2v.

    Thanks for this video! How long do you find this works for? I assume when it stops charging, the battery is on its way out. If this give me another year of life, it'd be totally worth it. But if it's something that gets me another month or two, I'd probably just recycle it.

      I had a battery that I couldn't "fix" by connecting to the visible terminal connectors... I opened the battery and connected the charger directly to the internal batteries (bypassing the electronics) and all was good.

    • @psalm2forliberty577
      @psalm2forliberty577 2 года назад +1

      No cause you need a quick voltage jump direct to batts, "around" circuit control board.
      Using visible terminals wont do that

    Lithium batteries (depending on the actual chemistry) do not like to be totally discharged. To maximize battery life, don't let them discharge to zero. The battery packs have safety circuits that shuts the battery down when the battery discharges to a certain point, but the circuit needs a little power, and battery self-discharge keeps happening in the battery. A total discharged Lithium, similar to lead acid, battery will be permanently damaged. This fix by-passes the charge control and battery monitoring circuits and puts enough power back into the battery to power those circuits to enable charging. Good information, but be very careful to watch the battery pack during this process, because it can start a battery fire (don't leave battery pack connected if you leave the room.) Lithium chemistry is much more finicky to charging, and all those electronics in the battery pack and charger are doing a job. Bottom line is to keep Lithium battery packs charged 70-100% while in storage, and throw them on a charger every couple of months to keep them healthy.

    I have seen this technique using 24VDC charger and yours using 12VDC charger. Both seem to work. Knowing little about LiOn batteries except all sorts of warnings about using only designated chargers can you explain why either 12 or 24 volt power supplies work without a problem for "shocking" this battery pack back to around 12 volts where it can make the Ryobi charger start charging again?

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  3 года назад

      We are simply using the 12vdc to bring cells that have discharged back up to a threshold voltage that the chip on top can sense to then take over and charge battery! Cheers

    my makita battery pack charged 1 times and with 24hrs the battery had drained. So i took apart the battery pack and recharged all the 18650 individually in a separate charger, 4 out of the 10 were .5v and most where 1.4v, so even the ones with .5v were able to charge up to 4.1v now im letting them sit for 48hrs to see how much they drop and hold a charge.

    Just 2 days ago I "recovered" a dead 24V Li Ion hand chainsaw battery BY freezing it for 14 hour, thawing it for 7 hours and then Taa Daa RECHARGING IT!! (As per information I found on the Inet.) . After thaw, the charger showed GREEN - with a periodic FLICKER OF - RED. Hang on sloopy!! Initially I was disappointed thinking the Inet info was bad [tho told about the red flicker]). I waited about 45 minutes and the LED turned solid RED and began charging 4 hours later solid GREEN charged. It now once again powers my saw
    As Johnny 5 would say NO DISASSEMBLE! No Multimeter, no strange screwdriver tips, etc!!! TRY this route first. IF IT DONT WORK then do the disassemble route.

    I haven’t read all the comments, but do you think you can do it without taking the battery apart? Meaning hook the trickle charger to the positive and negative leads that would take the charge from the ryobi charger? I wasn’t sure if it was the BMS or the charger causing the issue.

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  2 года назад

      I suspected it was the board and not the charger but some say it has worked the way you mentioned it! Also keep in mind you could have a bad cell , this is another reason why you would want to take it apart! Thanks for watching 🍻

    I put mine in the freezer overnight and they almost always start to charge when plugged in.
    The other thing for really stubborn Li batteries is to take a 9 volt rectangular battery and 2 alligator clips and connect + to Ryobi + and - to -...about 15 seconds later the 9v battery gives the Li battery enough to appear alive and then you can charge. You don't have to disassemble the Ryobi to do either.
