I think Mordetwi is like a cryptid. It’s a blurry photo of bigfoot that we look at and go “ok well there must be a baffling story behind this”. We see two characters who could not be more tonally dissonant from one and other and wonder who decided they should be together and why they made that decision. That classic image raises so many questions that could only fully be answered if you were there ten years ago. Mordetwi tells story

As a fan of MLP that couldn't get off the ride, I remember laughing about the shitpost *years* ago. I was pretty surprised to see it get a resurgence.

Before I heard about this whole Mordetwi thing, the song Airplanes was one of my mom's favorite songs and it still is. She used to play it in the car a lot when me and my siblings were younger so I remember it deeply.

Personally, I believe the ship or “culture” is as popular as it is because so many of us went through that late 2000s to mid 2010s phase of shipping some of the weirdest shit from all of the craziest fandoms we could find. As much as we like to regret it, some of us used to ship crap like fnaf’s signature Bonnie and Chica, or Discord and Celestia, Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, etc-
I honestly think your ending sentence sums this up perfectly. “Nostalgia for a time when we weren’t afraid to be cringe on the internet” is simply what this is in every possible sense and I love it.

In all honesty, Mordetwi isn’t cringe. It might seem like it is, but it’s all just jokes and it’s so funny to me! I hate when people take stupid ships seriously (such as Pico and BF from FNF, which pretty much ruined the fandom). This is definitely one of my favorite memes and brought back my childhood

On one hand, it has that "loneliness energy" that plagues everything popular, since we're a social species, feeling lonely is something everyone can relate to, it's why breakup songs are usually more popular than happy songs, so a picture with two characters crying because they are separated and thus they feel lonely, is perfect for catching attention
On the other hand, it's drawn so poorly and the characters have do little in common that you can just smell the "sarcasm energy" oozing off the screen, and that same "energy", has been intoxicating the internet for years and years now, to the point where you can't escape it
So it's this is a perfect fit for the internet, everyone feels lonely deep down but most of us are too afraid of cringe do show it unless it's while hidden inside countless layers of sarcasm

_Airplanes_ is not even a breakup song. Also: I don't think bluedog's drawing was intended to be sarcasm in the first place, likewise I'm pretty sure the ship itself was originally intended to be a joke. I mean, did you read the FAQ of the ship's fan group?
I think this just gives me nostalgia from when being cringe wasn't cared about, as you said at the end of the video. 2009-2012 was peak cringe for so many people because a lot of us were much younger and just wanted to create stuff. Then 2015-2017ish came around and posting cringe became the most godawful thing you could do on the internet. Personally, I want there to be a cringe Renaissance. I want to go back to a time where people could just do what they enjoy without being kicked around by people who act like 12-year-olds from the Leafy era of RUclips.
I do think cringe is steadily heading towards it’s deathbed, tho, as the internet becomes more empathetic (specially considering the recent neurodiversity awareness), so that gives me hope

The song did not make the pairing/ship; it's also not an "emo song", it's literally about reminiscing the simpler past - it's such a universal experience almost everyone has had at some point in their lives that it's the last thing from an emo theme.
I literally didn't know anything about the origins of Mordetwi and that it went that deep and had so many fans. I thought it was just a redraw meme lol. It's pretty wonderful to look back on a time where shipping, and even the original fanfiction, was considered normal and okay. Now anything like that is considered either cringe or toxic :( Great video tho! Very informational lol

It got popular because it is a combination of absurdity, nostalgia, and more recently, a taste for satire
And it resonates with people in a way thats unexpectedly wholesome because it deals with emotions that are more genuine when they happen irl. It has some depth, oddly, and when people shitpost about it, it just gives it more validity indirectly. Thats how I see it. Because, if you see people acting that way irl, its not necessarily a bad thing, if we compare that to other memes this one is more mature, despite being juvenile in a way still, even adults could relate to wishing for simpler times.
Basically this is one of the longest running inside jokes the internet has, and I'm just loving it every single time it pops back up.
This gives me nostalgia for old MLP youtube. Like the vibes this whole meme radiates just does.

Honestly tho. Even if some of those old fanfics are cringe, the perseverance to finish them to 20+ chapters holy hell-
To be fair, Earthworm Zim wasn't setting a goal to have 20+ chapters, it just happened that the writers (yes, there were at least two) had so much story to write that they had to divide it into _that_ many chapters. Even some of the chapters have to be subdivided into parts; they're only allowed to fit so much into a single Deviation post before they have to continue in another post, hence multiple chapters.

I didn't even realize that he looked like mordecai, I'm not the biggest fan of regular show but mlp still makes me very happy, its story is so much more than how friendship is magic, it shows complex relationships and different species comming together with a shared enemy, it shows character growth and tells the story of a family, people who found strength in each other, and its beautiful and I love the fan art from it. If that makes me a cringy brony, then fine. I guess I'm a cringy brony.

I have been seeing 'Mordetwi' all over recently in my recommended page. It's crazy to see where it all began compared to the hundreds of animations, fanart, and fanfictions that are related today. I love videos discussing topics like this in detail and I would be happy to see more like this.

I've been on the internet for 7 years (including the time when I didn't have a channel or any socials) and I didn't know about this meme until recently. And yes I still feel nostalgic because of the many drawings made in that art style.
It's very hard to really respond to this video or the ship/meme as a whole, as I only discovered it thanks to Solar Sands and then thought nothing of it, other than how weird I thought it was. It surprises me that there still is a passionate following, although most of it isn't at all serious, regardless of which platform it's on. I still think it is weird as hell, but seeing just what went into it and where the people behind it are now gives me more of an appreciation for something I, otherwise, wouldn't care about. Thank you for making this video, and I personally think it deserves more views and likes than the video that led me to this: Lessons in Meme Culture's take on MordeTwi as a meme.

I'll be honest on this. I was a fan of both shows, but also a fan of Adventure Time as well. It was around the time of my late high school years and these 3 shows were a huge impact in my life. Heck, I once go by a username call TwiMordeFinnX, and it's to show much commitment I was to these shows. Honestly, what I'm saying is that this ship, to me, is very odd and babbling. I'm aware of those Modecai and Twilight images, but I personally thought it was a big joke, but now that I'm seeing this ship come back in the 2020s is astounding. I'm not very heavy into cartoons these days, but I'll make an exception for the new G5 MLP series to see the new movie out in Spetember, but wow...This is something I never thought would bloom into something trending

I saw mortetwi a few years before its resurgence now. I was an mlp and regular show fan before I knew about the meme and I think I was the original drawing from solar sands or deviant art cringe. I also saw a few of cartoon lover's comics.
this meme sorta revitalized a lot of internalized nostalgia for me.
i used to be extremely into fandoms when i was way younger, around 9-13. being around these types of circles, everyone in love with the media that they consumed, a lot of shipping stuff happened naturally; never partaken in any of that though. i know for myself, i look back on those years extremely fondly since they were such open and inclusive communities for me to express myself in a time and place i really couldn't-- i'd honestly bet there's a lot of overlap between queer communities and fandoms, alongside a lot of neurodivergent tendencies (i see a lot of the "fandoms are cringe" arguments usually coming from neurotypicals.) cuz of those reasons i look back on shit like undertale as a point of reference for example. supernatural, anything with openly LGBTQ characters. and also how fandoms are usually bolstered up by unanimous hyperfixiations by the people in those communities
i can say for certain that, at least for me, i hold an extreme amount of nostalgia for that whole early 2010s mindset: early 2010s tumblr, accepting communities. i joke saying that, "oh i'd love to be a homestuck fan in 2012," but i actually do feel a sort of connection to that. it's some strange post-2008 recession hauntology that im realizing now that a LOT of people feel. i'm only 18, i've never experienced really much of anything before 2015... but it's persistent in me. maybe it's just my personal lack of a community i can confide and feel comfortable in- maybe a lot of people have felt that due to alienation these days. don't really know honestly.

Seeing this ship suddenly become mainstream is such a gutpunch of nostalgic whiplash. I, too, was an active member of the MordeTwi fanclub on dA back in 2012, and even drew fanart for it despite not really 'shipping' it. Rather, I had been following Abigail since BEFORE she even wrote Earthworm Zim for her other cartoon crossover art. I don't even remember what compelled me to join the group.
