Bullets vs Propeller in Slow Motion - The Slow Mo Guys
Filmed with the Phantom v2511 between 28,500fps and 120,000fps
And the Phantom Flex 4K at 1000fps Развлечения
fun slo-mo fact, those bullets are traveling about 2800 fps. The twist rate on an m60 is 1 in 12 inches. So that means the bullet is spinning at 2800 revolutions per second, or 168,000 RPM
Casey Ellis that's awesome

Can you do a slomo of two guns pointed at each other (or at a slight angle) and watch in slomo the two bullets colliding to each other?
Candi Soda whose gonna pull the trigger two people wouldnt do that its two risky
and the angle to get the bullets to collide would be way to difficult to find as well
marcus james not impossible tho, and a person isn't required to fire a gun

Imagine the sync gear being just a *little* off, and it ends up only shooting when the propeller is right in front of the gun.
But, wouldn’t only shot the propeller in the same place?
@@iedi3 Yeah, but that would still be enough to destroy the propeller.

Also Dan: thinks it’s a good idea to touch the barrel of the gun
Not the actual barrell its a fake heatsink to make it look more like vickers mg pay attention to what they say smh
@@m.j.a7704 yeah a heatsink that has barrel heat and is standard knowledge of no touch can be hot

M. J. A you ever heard of this thing called thermal conduction? Metal does it, it’s where heat disperses through an object, and good conductors like metal disperse the heat very easily allowing them to heat up very quickly, the fake jacket is in contact with the barrel so it heats up just the same, and because the heat sink is fake it carries no water so has no actual cooling factor. It’s just like him touching the barrel unjacketed, learn basic physics cat shagger

Before the Dutch invented synchronisation gear for the Germans, the French just stuck metal on the propellors as armour. So the French pilots were shooting at their own propellors and hoping they didn't blow them off.
And in WWII, an American pilot got a bullet right through the centre of his propellor blade, but managed to return to base. If it had been just a bit to the left, or a bit to the right, he would've gone down.
Cybermat47 the British decided to make a pusher aircraft which was actually fairly decent. They also made some sort of monstrosity with the gunner sitting in front of the propellor on a gondola (or 'pulpit') with the pilot sitting on the other side, that was less successful for obvious reasons,
Cybermat47 edit the decent pusher design was the DH. 2 it won airsuperiority over the Somme. the bad one with the gunner risk of losing limbs in propellers was the Be 9
I've seen the picture you're talking about, scary stuff! It was a P-47 that took flak (if i remember correctly) directly to the prop. Massive hole left in one of the blades big enough to stick your arm through.
I heard the metal plates would sometimes cause the bullets to ricochet back at the pilot resulting in death or injury.
Cybermat47 If I recall correctly, it was the Germans who invented this technology.

Even if it’s not loaded I’d still be scared to go anywhere near to the front of that thing
Exactly
Is he? He's standing on the far side of the propeller while it's more or less straight up and down and the gun should be centered on the propeller. His left elbow is against the far side of the fuselage. If his head is in front of the gun, that would mean his right elbow must be straight in front of Dan relative to the engine which doesn't seem to be supported by the rest of his positioning. I won't deny that it looks like his head is lined up with the gun but I think that's a perception issue....
Why? It would be interesting to stare straight through to the barrel of an m16

I think "in the background" is an important part of that. It's being in the line of fire that's the dangerous bit.

Thanks for the video guys! I had just done a bunch of research on the different syncro devices used during WWI. It was quite interesting, as you guys just briefly touched on it, the airplane engine is constantly changing speeds which the synchronization mechanism had to take into account.
Loved seeing the Vickers machine gun! Great job as always!👍
2:08 me when my brother told me to leave his special suit case in principles office and run away
I wonder if the reason the bullets come out so close to the leading edge is so that they will be less affected by turbulent air caused by the propeller blades.
Tom Haflinger ah, smart. I was thinking it should be after the blade to reduce the risk of impact, but that makes sense.
Total guess, though. They said they slowed the propeller down. I wonder if it works out differently when the blades are moving faster.
Tom Haflinger if you guys find out for sure mind sending the link? Great minds guys
A cursory search for "synchronization gear" and "turbulence" doesn't turn anything up, so it could be a coincidence.
If the gear can be adjusted, experimentation could shed some light on this, seeing if firing earlier or later affects the accuracy.
The one tricky thing, though, is that the mock engine is stationary. The propellers are without a doubt creating turbulence, but relative to the bullet trajectory, is that turbulence comparable to what might be encountered in real flight?
Really the gun can go off at any time between the blades. it's about the speed of the machine gun not the propeller. It's basically a small cam that disables the gun while the prop is right in front. Other than that you can pull the trigger and fire away in the middle, the tail edge or leading edge, doesn't matter.
You guys should do slowmo goosebumps!!

One of the early French pilots I believe just fixed a gun firing through his propeller arc and just reinforced his props with metal. Bullets that hit were deflected. For a time it was successful. The problem was that the stupid bastard didn't replace the propeller after each mission and eventually it broke in mid flight and he was killed in the resulting crash. Literally shot himself down.
I remember reading that also. It made a huge difference in the hit/kill ratio.
Correct. Note: It was Fokker who invented the "Interrupter gear" for the Germans. Probably the Allies discovered it while poking through some wreckage. Or it was parallel development.
adavidmundt You mean synchronization gear. It didn't prevent the gun from firing, it actually fired the gun itself.
No, the Synchronization gear was someone else (and works as you describe) - the interrupter gear was invented by Fokker, it was just a much worse concept than the synch gear
Panzerkampfwagen
He was called Roland Garros. He was NOT killed after he downed his plane due to completely unrelated reasons. His plane was actually captured and studied by Anthony Fokker who tried to improve this system. He became a P.O.W. throughout most of the war but escaped. He wasn't stupid either.
Awesome vid. Btw Gav, just saw your movies, I thought they were really awesome! Big fan. I'd love to see you do more acting. Your American recheck accent is brilliant😂😂
Good job as always guys!
couple questions....
1. Shouldn't the prop be going faster?
2. If your gun is synced to your propeller, would that affect your rate of fire if you were throttling up or down?
they did say at the end of the video that they were only doing 200rpm because 1200k rpm would have the prop moving and it would be hard to catch footage of it moving
For the second question: Yeah, it actually would. But since you wouldn't normally fire the guns stationary on the floor you wouldn't notice the difference.
Actually you'd be surprised how much you notice the difference while flying. Whist playing the awesome and incredibly realistic first world war flight sim, Rise of Flight, I have often had to make a decision when diving on an enemy whether to throttle back to give me more time to aim with the lower rate of fire or give it full throttle, hope that I can aim in time and unleash a devastating hail of lead while hoping I won't over-rev and kill my engine :)
AFAIK, the 'trigger' momentarily switched off the autofire while the propeller was in front of the gun. So yes, it did reduce the rate of fire, but not by a lot.
No I'm afraid that is a common mistake people make, that was the Interrupter Gear which would as you say pause the automatic fire while the a propeller blade was in front of the muzzle of the gun. This never worked properly so the Synchronisation Gear superseded it, this would essentially have the machine gun working in a semi-automatic state and every time a propeller blade would pass the muzzle it would send an impulse to the trigger, firing the gun. If the next firing impulse came before the gun was ready (finished chambering the next round) it would not fire. This meant that the fire rate would peak at certain engine RPM counts where the firing impulses and the max rate of fire of the gun reached an equilibrium and then drop as the RPM increased and the impulses came too rapidly for the gun to have cycled the next round, this fire rate would then increase again as the engine RPM increased and so on. This staggering of firing rates is less noticeable in aircraft that used two of the later version Vickers Machine Guns which had a modification that increased the rate of fire (although the name of that mod. escapes me...) but the difference of fire rate between low and high RPM is quite noticeable as the overall maximum rate of fire is much higher.
Hope I didn't bore you with all that, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to this topic :D
Watching videos like this and also the vlog on SMG2, it always reminds me in the most interesting way, that Gav is actually brilliant. We see him as this goofy meatball of a guy in all the AH videos. Plenty of available spent brass at most gun ranges. If your country doesn't have those, then you likely aint gettin' brass.
You can just buy brass cases. They're sold for home loaders with or without the primers. As it's nothing but shaped brass, any country should allow you to order them online.
The exact timing of such a machine is truly beautifull
its way more simple than that, theres a gear stepped with the propeller connected to the gun, thats how they solved it

I hope maybe you guys can revisit this in the future with a full speed prop, Not to see if the bullet will hit but how the prop and round will react, Will it make a hole or will the prop be moving fast enough to make a linear hole our gouge, will it knock the round off its straight flight path? If you could get access to someone with a prop test platform you could do it, you would not need the aircraft mounted gun either, just any hand gun or rifle. maybe in the future some time?

if you want a failure like that you need to shoot it with a minigun
pikadude1996 or just shoot it for a long time.
You could custom order a propeller that has no angling. It wouldn't be able to produce thrust, regardless of RPM.
I was just thinking the same thing then read your message. It would have made a better video if the prop was moving at full speed. You just need a blade the that cut's through the air but produces no thrust
@@deancyrus1 It would not have made a better video. Both of you seem to forget that the results would be the same at full speed.
200rpm vs 1200rpm the bullet is still trucking on through the prop like it was stationary.
It's not like the prop is going to knock the bullet off course or deviate it in any significant way.
Like Gav said, they're dealing with "orders of magnitude" so therefore you'd need 20,000rpm to even start to make a difference.
_Bullet through jet engine perhaps??_
@@beefcakeandgravy I think the implication if having the propellor rotate faster is that more bullets would have hit it.
@@beefcakeandgravy Thing of it is, if the prop was spinning faster, there would be more stress on the blade, potentially resulting in some more explosive strikes when the bullets hit.

I really can't stand watching Gavin put his face right in front of the gun, I assume it is never ready to fire when he does but good lord you have the entire desert to stand on and yet you choose the one and only place where you can get shot by your own contraption - remember everyone no matter how sure you are the gun is empty never aim at anything you do not want shot (or in this case do not place your head directly in front of the gun ^^')
Well I've got great news for you then! Not once did he put this head in front of the gun. Not sure what video you were watching... Or maybe you were fooled by the angle everytime he was on the opposite side. But either way, and from the 7 minutes of footage that was published here, he never had his head in front of the gun. Now do bullet vs bullet
Shoot the guns at same time and let the bullets collide into each other
Prime Comedy extremely hard to do
Sadly it doesnt describe the sync gear at all. At least that was what i awaited.
Alexandr Škaryd same here
Brian Martin what did u want to say my friend?
It's not much to explain just take the speed of the prop and the gun find the highest common denominator inside the guns capacity to shoot and gear it as such.
Yes. While that sounds simple, its not from engineering point of view..
But a plane's propeller rotates and different rpm depending on if you're trying to speed up or slow down or stay level.
And the sync would slide in any case, because the engine wouldn't hold an absolutely steady rpm. So you have to have some positive mechanical link between the crankshaft of the engine and the firing mechanism of the gun that holds off firing in the critical time as the blade will pass in front of the muzzle.
Undeniable beauty.
This question has been on my mind for three days.
