  • This may possibly be one of the fastest hostage rescues conducted. I bet they were not expecting to see big American patches, tactical gear, and giants standing on their behalf. This is another compelling story of the effectiveness of this unit and how capable they are.

I served with the 2nd Marine Regt at Al Asad AB in ‘05 in support of a Delta team (yes, I said that correctly). The approach was novel. We would do conventional operations to force HVTs to relocate, they had to use phones for arrangements and when we got a fix on one Delta would raid the location that night. It was the craziest thing, 2,000 guys in support of about 30 but it worked like a charm.

    Living history. Thank you.
I wish my father could have had this kind of interview in 1967 or so. His stories of Vietnam were few and short of detail. He was a USMC artillery battery commander and aerial observer. I heard three.
One comedic one about… reappropriating… a generator form the Air Force to power an Enlisted Club at their base. It’s how I learned what can be done with a clipboard, the right attitude, and finding the dumbest person to talk to that can help you get your job done. It worked well enough for me in the 90’s Army.
Another was a recurring dream of being shot down and struggling to get a door gun off its mount as the VC approached; only to wake with his hand wrapped in the sheets.
The third was very real, only told once when I was in my 30’s, and not long before he died. It was about how I was a minute or so away from not being born.
I’d love to hear that story again - but in a way such as these stories that you are curating; peer to peer, soldier to soldier, in detail without the filter that he thought I needed.

Guys, I can't say that I get what you live while you do what you do but it feels like an elite hockey team that plays for keeps. I got to the elite level in hockey, I know what its like to feel a team become two, three, ten times the sum of its parts in certain situations. But, I can't imagine adding to that picture that someone dies for every goal, someone's wounded for every assist, and every play you make really matters to, dictates the, actual lived lives of the people around and in fact across the globe to some extent. On top of that, you don't necessarily know whether the ream owner is a patriot of a puffed prick. I met a Canadian special forces guy in a trauma (PTSD) treatment center and I understand him a lot better after listening to you guys. Thanks... hope my metaphor isn't insulting, it's just me grasping for understanding which I think is about the only thing I can do to contribute.

I'm not sure exactly where but I believe I've seen Chris VanSant either on deployment or back in Bragg. I was in USASOC from 2005-2017 and I swear I've either met him or at least been in the same room with him. In Iraq 03-04 I was sliced to a CAG team for about 4 months but throughout my career I got to do some training with D teams, but for the life of me I can't remember exactly where I've seen Chris before. In JSOC we deploy with a variety of elements, and while conducting missions you get to hone your skills from guys who are the sharpest of the tools. I have two buddies who were in Delta, and it could have been at an event with them but wish I could remember exactly where. Pretty cool to see people I've been around but never had the opportunity to actually speak to tell their experiences that I was/wasn't part of. Chewed the same dirt at the same time but different elements. I did have the opportunity to meet Tim Kennedy back in 2008 at KAF when I was with 7th GRP and he was at the CMD HQ and he was with one of guys talking. Pretty cool dude from what I can remember from the 1-2 min conversation we had.

Crazy how true the “weird, lucky timing” thing is common with these guys. Rob O’Neil says the same when people ask how he got to be a part of the Bin Laden raid. Right place, right time 🤷‍♂️

Hey Shawn I respect and love your honesty opinion and balls to have a show like this!!
I was wondering if you would consider having David Eubank a Former SF and Ranger guy on your podcast. As a 21 year old I would say most young guys feel f-ing lost and I think David who now does humanitarian work could speak to that! Thank you sir for your time and your extremely good looking consideration.
