My favorite story from Mr Ballen so far is the one about an elderly man who decides to go hiking alone through a very difficult trail in California on winter. Various people he meets on his travel warn him and advice him to go back because storms are coming but he stubbornly refuses and keeps going forward. This man ends up trapped at the bottom of a ravine and dies. Then, exactly one year later( or two? Nevertheless, the day and month coincided), a lost couple end up in the same ravine and finds the man's diary along with some matches. The boyfriend then decides to use the matches to provoke a fire as a signal. Rescuers arrived and saved them, thanks to that stubborn man who died in the same place but at a different time.
If that had been a movie people would have said it was too far fetched the poor man lasting down on his own knowing he is definitely alone and helpless and doomed, then the sheer luck they had thinking they had met their end also and a man’s gear is lying still intact that you’ve not noticed some people have luck some poor fuckers step in dog shit everytime I’m the latter
I knew him. The man’s name was John Donovan. He used to walk everywhere. He grew up in an orphanage, and he had no family. He worked as a social worker for many many years and helped hundreds of people. He was also terrified of technology and you couldn’t really get him to use a cell phone or a computer. It’s a very sad story, but knowing John he would’ve been tickled pink that his mission in life was to save those two people.
For me, the worst story was the one of the older guy who before surgery was given a drug that paralyzed him, but the doctors forgot to give him the anesthesia medicine. I couldn't imagine the pain he went through during those 16 minutes.
I WANT YOU TO KNOW... NO JOKE.. THIS was honest to GOD me (without any cutting).. Brooke Army Medical Center in Ssn Antonio... Generally great docs like (Doctor KING - World class).. I WOKE UP and couldn't talk but I could see EVERYTHING, and at least feel how cold my body was (burn stuff pretty much tosses the traditional human body temps out the window)... I was rapid eye moving, looking around and wondering why there were SO MANY people in the OR... (BAMC was at least partially a teaching facility)... I FELT like a damn bug on a petrie dish.. I could NOT TALK.. I think I was intubated anyway, but I could NOT move.. I'm watching the "students" on the second story windows looking down at me, taking notes, and the (I'm going to call them arseholes, though that came from serious concern... I FINALLY got the attention of a lil (BIG) peeerick student? Teachers assistant? Internet? "He's awake!!!" Then I got the mask and more syrup in my IV.. I watched them for at least a minute after they dumped more in my IV, and they likely had to close my eyes... IF they felt like it.. Honestly, I probably shouldn't be alive... I should most likely died leading up to one of many skin graft 'processes'... I have NEVER EVER felt so fkn... Scared would be an understantment... All drugs considered, and while I don't believe in "bigfoot", and I don't think I would rate alien attention... I thought I was a monkey being disected... Whoooo.. I had forgotten about this... IT IS A REAL THING... The docs could have done whatever they wanted and I had NO ability to do anything about it... LOL. THANKS fOR THE MEMORY... ;) The showers were even worse.... But, I got a free life out of it... Regardless... (WOW.. I don't have "flash backs" or "PTSD" (that I or anyone so far has realized - No cold sweats... Only piss a bit racing to a toilet here and there when I gotta go and am sleeping deep. :p (((LEVITY))). ((((MOSTLY)))... I'm actually glad you brought this up... Absolute true story and I have HUGE 3 ring binders of records I haven't looked at once after telling my lawyers to efff off.. (Friend related innocent accident) I feel like I liar now on some of my responses saying that I am not scared or fear anything.. Totally legit... Only letting friends or loved ones down on my water or lifetime... This actually did scare the EFFF out of me... Talk about being the fly on the wall... Again thanks for the reminder.. This recently happened to my mom. I no longer live in the same country as her and I constantly told her to speak to a lawyer but she never did. Luckily it was a very short surgery. I still don’t know why she didn’t.
The story of the man who dreams a life with a wife, children, house, everything then wakes up one day and finds out non of it is real. The agony in the story is heartbreaking

Same here. I like hiking alone and a few months ago I turned and abruptly ran into a couple only a few feet away. They were acting really odd, and the guy got a bit too close to me and asked me for directions to a landmark on the trail that was really obvious, but more importantly behind both of us already. I could already hear MrBallen telling my story in my head. Luckily they walked off in that direction, but I was so spooked that I started damn near running and turning my head. In hindsight, they may have been on drugs of some kind or something, but it still scared the shit out of me.
@@RorinoTheGreat I often wonder at these things. How many times have we all come across a dodgy person or situation and narrowly avoided a close call without knowing It. A lot of these horror stories start so unsuspecting and innocently. My girlfriend walked the dog the other week really early in the morning and it was still dark she told me there was a guy being really weird with his hood up and a neck warmer covering the bottom half of his face. He came up and asked her something and the dog started going crazy at him and scared him then he just rushed off. It makes you wonder, did she narrowly avoid something bad just by the dog being there or was it just an innocent encounter. I suppose it's better to not know than to find out. Because too find out would mean mrballen could be telling your story one day. If one there was a way to know what situations we were getting ourselves into ahead of time.
I think a bigger part of the fascination is a survival mechanism. We want to know and understand these tragedies to ultimately avoid finding ourselves in the situation. We think of ways to avoid getting in the situation or think of ways to get out of that type of situation should we find ourselves in it.
Yeah I find myself ruminating on whether or not the victim could have avoided the situation and how with a majority of true crime cases. More often than not I believe it is so. Infidelity, love triangles, greed etc. It would be cool to see a channel that tackled that head on instead of the constant “she/he lit up every room she/he walked into.”
The one story he told that sticks with me more than any other was of the old lady who lived a rather lonely and solitary life, fell through some floorboards in her house into a tight space between two brick walls that were part of the house's foundation, and was unable to get out, and a year or two later all that was found of her was her skeletal remains, complete with the clothes she was wearing.
The Nutty Putty Caves one still haunts me. I live not far from them. The slow, unstoppable escalation from one simple misjudgment-all while being only feet away from family and friends but still totally inextricable-is simply awful.
@@cuppycakey5013 No, he was stuck in a cave, basically wedged upside down, and they ended up having to leave him. They couldn't even retrieve the body after he died. Ended up sealing off the entrance, effectively turning the whole cave system into his tomb.
The husband and wife who got tied to the end of a heavy boat anchor that got thrown overboard stuck with me. He held on for as long as he could to the edge of the boat before they went to the bottom of the ocean. A lot of evil in this world.
I used to binge all the horror and true crime channels on RUclips but I had to stop about 2 years back it was making me so depressed and messing with my mental health. One of the best decisions I ever made, I do come back every few months and listen to 1 or 2 videos
A story that haunts me is about a guy who had a great family, a wife and two kids, nice house, and a really nice job, spend a lot of time with the kids fishing on vacations Etc. The wife was his high school sweetheart and they were a perfect couple. Then all the sudden he woke up in s hospital room and found out that he had actually been in a coma for 5 years, was single and was never married nor had any children. He fell into a deep depression because basically his entire life no longer nor ever existed . For him it was like his wife and children had died. He never recovered because it was so real it was a if he lost everything
Some of the details are off but yeah presumably you mean The Lamp, that one is seriously mindfuck material. One significant detail is he wasn't in a coma for 5 years, nor did he wake up in a hospital. He was knocked out cold and awoke either on the ground where it happened or as he was helped by some security guard or similar, either in a car or being carried towards a car to rush him to the hospital. He was unconsciou for minutes at most and during that time he experienced a whole lifetime that was all just fantasy, which makes the thing way worse in my mind.. And there's no real way of knowing we aren't in that same situation right now. Not entirely unlike simulation theory but just as with that, there's no point in dwelling on it since we can never know unless brought out of it, much less prove anything..
This one. I've had nightmares that I've waken up from my real life and was still married to my ex and didn't have my 5 kids with my current wife. Its terrifying.
Sounds like a past life. Too bad no one took him serious and detailed everything. Maybe they could have figured out who he’d been so he could more and move on. Yea.. The one that I think got Alot of people was the one he did on 9/11 💔 You could Visibly see Mr Ballen getting choked up as he spoke about what happened that day.. I was about to explain the part he was talking about but I don't even wanna bring it back up 💔 That Moved me and obviously Mr Ballen as well.. I think everyone who was able to Remember that time remembered what happened on 9/11.. I had just turned 10 and don't remember much of that year but I remember that day for some reason 💯 I remember an adult telling us what happened and me not taking it seriously and laughing thinking he was talking about a Movie 🎥 but he just had this Sadness on his face that I didn't understand.. I walk in The house and I'm watching it on TV and I think the serious Tone in the environment (Well in All the Adults) Made me try to Laugh to lighten people up but Nobody was laughing or smiling.. So I just watched, Not understanding at the time just how Significant and Sad the situation was.. Knowing myself, had I been old enough to join the Military 🪖 I would have (Assuming I didn't understand at the time what REALLY Happened), I would have been Angry it was happening but it was one Aspect of the whole situation that would have probably made me Break down and that's where Mr Ballen got choked up at as he spoke about it.. My eyes got watery as Mr Ballen voice cracked and eyes got Watery. Horrific Day indeed 💯💔 It's Crazy to me that even though I didn't understand what was happening at the time, I somehow still remembered that day 💯 That's actually One of 3 Memories I have that year.. My Memory didn't really kick in until just before I turned 12. By far one of my favorites is the "do you know the way to bells canyon"... Man still gives be shivers and the other one is the girl running away from the giant cowbell ringing creature
For me the one that stuck is the strange but true story of the girl having her entire family go into the cellar and dying from toxic potatoes. She went to having a big family to being orphaned in less than an hour. She witnessed the last moments of all of her family. All because of potatoes.
Her name was Geraldine Largay. This one will stay with me. The poor lady was so close to airforce land that was already searched. It was so sad. She was an avid trekker. RIP Geraldine 🙏🏼
As a fan of Mr Ballen, I can say that what attracts me to see his stories is the possibility to learn how things can go wrong, and I use this knowledge to avoid these situations in my life... in my opinion it helps me to protect myself better.
I can imagine that all of us MrBallen listeners have a better respect for ever lowering ourselves into a cramped space with our arms pinned, or double checking that doors will not lock behind us if we find ourselves in tight areas such as a closet. That, and I can assume none of us are going spelunking ANY time soon. Ever.
I’ve meet one guy at someone else house I was visiting then few weeks later he gets shot to death , and another time I talked to somebody then a week later he died told him see you later I never did I can name serveral other times also
The ones that have bothered me the most are about people who are just doing their job but the equipment malfunctions and they end up being burned alive. That has got to be one of the worst ways to die, I always feel so sorry for them.
Did you hear about the one Russian lady who worked at a candy factory and was cleaning up around the factory and somehow fell into a vat of boiling caramel and got boiled alive by caramel. Gotta be the worst way to go

There was the time a NASCAR racer got lit on fire, but I believe the gasses that caused the fire or something resulted in the fire not being visible to us, so the driver was just flailing around burning alive as people watched confused. Iirc he made it out safely, but still, invisible fire is a terrifying thought.
I operate a crematorium and you see all kinds of stuff, not just during the cremation process but like intense, brutal manners of death, and after awhile it just become normal. Children on the other hand you never get used to, I feel him on that one!
I was a medic for a while and cant completely relate. Vast majority of the job never phased me, but calls involving children did. Now i have a daughter and even thinking of some of those situations makes me want to cry

The mr ballen story that has stuck with me was about the family who got stuck in their car in the middle of nowhere. There was snow everywhere and after a few days no one had come to rescue them. Instead the dad decided to go looking for help and he died. But his footprints were seen by helicopters and they were able to find his wife and children safe. The thing that sticks with me is that he died believing he failed his family when in fact he saved them.
I think the main fascination is that some of these stories highlight how one bad decision or just a momentary lapse in judgement can lead to death. I think we also realize just how easily we could find ourselves in the same or a similar situation.
I have followed Mr Ballen from the beginning, and one of the main reasons I love him (apart from him being an amazing storyteller), is his empathy and his humanity. If he ever starts showing an attitude of his own self-importance, I’ll be incredibly sad and stop watching him, but I don’t think that will happen. Thanks for presenting these wonderful interviews, guys. ❤️
I have PTSD, the one about the guys being sucked into the tube underwater took me like 10 times of going back to watch small amounts. That one was freaking intense! If your imagination can put you into these scenarios, it’s pretty scary. I’m a combat infantry veteran of the afghan conflict. I have this weird thing with empathy, an overactive imagination and an issue with grief lately.
i will never forget the first mr ballen video i saw which was the young teen who was abducted assaulted had her arms amputated and dumped in a ditch but managed to survive
I think a big part of us being so intrigued and fascinated is also due in part to the content creator himself. Mr. Ballen. He has such a positive vibe about him. He's like our storytelling uncle lol.
Dude he lies in every story. Don't you wonder how he knows what dead ppl think right before they die alone somewhere? Dude is a fraud. Pick any story of his listen then go fact check and you'll realize just how much he lies. 30% of his stories are just made up facts he puts in there. It literally used to say it in his description on Spotify that if he doesn't know something he'll make it up to the best of hid ability buy hey, if you like being lied to like a blind fool keep supporting his fake ass
The reason MrBallen videos have a soothing effect isn't the content (which is great btw), but he himself. He could switch to a totally different genre and people would still follow him. He is just really gifted in presenting.
I also think, after watching so many videos it is good to learn from some mistakes or choices people make, there are a lot of stories Mrballen tells that are less well-known and have information that someone else can learn from.
What's sad to me is that. No one questions the constant abuse and harrasment the 'Like' button has to go through ever since the birth of Mr. Ballen podcast.
That poor like button has had to go through worse trauma than many of the stories’ victims. Sneaking into its room and setting the alarm clock back an hour so it’s late for work and gets a stern warning from its supervisor? Brutal!
This type of story hits home. I've lost the trail many times, and these stories make you realize how real the game I play is. Listening to how people have made mistakes and died has made me a better hiker.
I’ve always been someone who doesn’t go off trail but the one story I read a few years ago about the French couple who lost the trail markers in New Mexico and died from thirst but their son lived because they gave him all their water stuck with me. It told me to one, always have water and probably other provisions, but two stay conservative in my approach to taking risks.
The “one” for me was the lady who died in the bathroom utility closet in her timeshare 😢 I’ve learned to never go places alone or at least without telling someone to check on me and to never stop fighting ! So many of these stories including the one I mentioned they were so close but gave up
I always take my phone with me when I go to that kind of spaces when there is no one around, especially after that story. Like a bathroom in a place I worked at where I often worked alone, but there still were the possibilty that someone could show up, so I had to lock the door to the lavatory. Just the thought of having to sit there for hours and hours and not knowing when anyone shows up...
He is such an amazing storyteller. 2 stories have ever truly freaked me out or caused me to lay awake at night thinking about how disturbing they were. The man that was accidentally left awake during surgery, and the couple who tried to sell their yacht and suddenly disappeared. The ending of these stories I won’t spoil, but they’re horrific. Truly horrendous. Messed me up for a while. Ballen is my go to for mystery storytelling. He absolutely nails it.
The Missing 411 stuff have always been my favorites to watch and follow because I and my whole family are a wilderness family and we love hiking, mountain bikes, and we love tough camping, but some of those stories we read or hear about really make us stop and be more vigilant in our caution when out hiking or in the mountains, especially when alone, because we could very easily end up being another one of those Missing 411 cases we often hear about. Mr Ballen really brought to light a lot of the David Paulidas cases and in a very mature and serious way, but still shows respect to all in the videos.
I ordered most of the missing 411 books during covid(lockdown), and the stories about children absolutely devastated me. I got really depressed. My husband and I have twin boys. So, I agree with Mr Ballen on that, anything to do with harm that comes to children....I just can't do it.
The final letter the woman wrote said something like, "it would be the greatest kindness if you would deliver the belongings in this bag to my family." She wrote about her love for her family and what a happy life she had led.
In a world that has made life so over complicated I find the simplicity of a genuine person just telling stories (brilliantly I might add) is something we can connect to and challenge our imagination to paint the pictures he is wording out for us. No effects, no screens just pure words and mind. Best channel on RUclips in my opinion.
Another reason why that kind of content brings comfort is due to the fact that many people are struggling and are miserable, but they are thankful that they are not in the situation some of the victims find themselves in. It makes you appreciate what you have, even if what you have is not much. I find myself after a miserable day of work saying "I'm glad I'm not in that situation" when I hear of someone else's unfortunate fate.
Mr Ballen’s demeanour and his ability to tell a story is actually helpful for people who already suffer from PTSD, anxiety and depression. He has built a supportive and very positive community, a safe space in the social mediaverse for people who know that bad things happen to good people, or cautionary tales of people who haven’t used their commonsense and gotten themselves in trouble. But it’s much more about the community that Mr Ballen has built, and that’s all down to who he is, that has made him so popular.

This interview was a great idea. It's cool to see Mr. Ballen in a discussion outside of his role on his channel. He seems prettymuch exactly what he represents to his audience.
I have noticed that he doesn't post any gruesome content about kids... as a Mum and partner, these cases really do hit home and is therefore really appreciated!!!
He does tho. I can remember two off the top of my head. I don't remember the exact names, but it's something like "He had plans for her" and "Down the hill". Nothing bad happened in the first one but the second one is the most shocking of all his stories to me. There is a video of the murderer, filmed by the two schoolgirls he murdered, right before he did it. And he shows the video too, the authorities got the video off one of the girl's phone and i guess they shared it publicly to find him. But they never did. He's probably still out there.

I know for me and a lot of others I know in the true crime community, it’s partially what John said about experiencing fear and discomfort safely, but it’s also almost a way to be prepared for IF any of these things were to happen in your own life. It almost feels like, by listening to the stories with both good and bad endings, you feel a sense of preparedness to face the world a little bit more confidently. I also know that my interest, like many others, stems from a life of personal trauma and trying to make sense of the world in the context of my own history and what happens to others. It feels like a connection to others when you have a similar trauma that they also got through, and leaves you feeling a bit of comfort to be reminded that you aren’t alone (personally, anyway). I also know I have to sometimes take breaks from listening to this genre of content if my headspace isn’t doing well, because the negatives of hearing all of the bad things in the world can become too much to handle in those times.
Hey MrBallen, I do remember this and it brought me to tears. She was with a friend of her. Even her husband knew that she went on a hike also. Her friend had to leave because of something. But the lady continue on hike and you know the rest of story, truly heartbreaking 😔😔😔😔
Personally, I listen to these stories mainly because it leave me feeling grateful for the life I have. Working in an air conditioned office and having 'only' a 2 day weekend isn't so bad compared to starving to death, and baking in the sun for 2 months on a life raft in the middle of the Pacific.
Mr Ballens best story was an old old one. It’s was first got me to follow him. Where the teen boys dad died and before they sold the cabin the boy wanted to stay there. And he was tormented by a demon creature. The SAME EXACT thing happened to me. Which is why it’s still my favorite to this day and I wish he’d do more stories like this.
I think the story that got to me the most was a fairly short one, but was seriously brutal. It's about a woman who was inspecting a truck on a construction site inspecting a truck, and the driver of a bulldozer didn't see here, and turned his truck on and drove right into her, so she fell in the shovel, and no one could hear her screaming because it was too noisy. Then the shovel picked up a huge load of sand, burying the woman under thousands of pounds of sand, which is terrible enough. But then the bulldozer drove over and dumped the sand into a sand crusher, and she managed to get up over the lid of it, and people saw her and rushed to help her, but her leg got caught and she got pulled into the crusher. Just horrifying. I mean, there would be nothing left of her. I can only imagine having a funeral with not even a little bit of my loved one to bury. So sad and terrifying.

The woman’s name was Geraldine who got lost in the woods. It was featured on North Woods Law. They searched for her for 3 years and finally found her remains and tent about 150ft from the trail. It was so sad. The Officers were devastated they could never find her.
I like all of his content. As a welder I have him playing while I’m m at work and his content gets me through the day. Having to do hundreds of pieces. I forget I’m working because I’m right in the moment of the story.
Part of it from my perspective is coming to terms with the fact that some situations are not survivable regardless of what you do. Everyone will be terrified at some point & every one of us will die. Accept it & you will may appreciate and enjoy your life more.
People who live mundane lives with little conflict are often drawn to stories of extreme circumstances. It's pure escapism from the doldrums of their lives. I think telling these stories might actually be a form of therapy for Mr. Ballen. A man who has been in situations that concern life or death. Wonderful storyteller, btw.
People who live mundane lives with no real trauma or difficulties, tend to scream victim the most. With no real understanding of reality, but are full of uneducated opinions that negatively effect everyone around them
The woman leaving words for her family behind also reminded me of my mother. She was supposed to have a heart battery installed and they decided she wasn't a candidate for it, and the device keeping her going was stressing her kidneys, so we had to sort of " turn off " my mother the next day, and the night before she left some sweet, short profound notes on her facebook page, not even saying goodbye, just saying that she didn't know what was going to happen the next day but that she has given it up to god and she loved all of us. I still have a hard time looking at those. I could never be as graceful as she was about dying. Especially considering how hard she fought to live over the course of her life.
the thing that strikes me so much about mr ballen is that he covers every single one of his stories with such deep empathy. you never forget that the people he is describing are real people with real passions and real relationships
Whenever I watch Mr.Ballen videos, a big part of me always roots for whoever is going through their horror. It's nice when they survive in the end, rare, but nice.
The mall also still bothers me. That poor old man. It reminded me of a story that happened in my area. A man was using his motorized wheelchair to go out in his backyard, maybe a pasture or something, and his battery ran out, stranding him out in the field, and he died of heat exposure before his family could find him out there. Breaks my heart when it involves someone older or someone helpless like that.
I think more specifically, Mr Ballen himself is so down to earth and relatable, he has become the focus!! I absolutely watch his videos to hear his voice and storytelling to take me off my anxiety. I really do find him calming! He really did talk me through a time of my ongoing grief of the loss of my mom. I discovered him and rather than think about reality, I just listened to him tell me a story through each video and for a few minutes I was calmed. It was powerful and I am grateful to him for it!
It's fascinating that you said this. I do volunteer work around death the cases that stick with me aren't the graphic, gorey cases. They are the simple cases that parallel or resonate with an aspect of my life at that moment. I've thought it was strange that the cases I thought should bother me didn't, but the cases I didn't think much of in the moment really stayed around in my mind. Thank you so much for this topic!
My guess is the story that still haunts him is one he remembers. I can’t imagine the story about the guy getting cooked alive on the factory floor by his son-in-law not haunting everyone who’s heard it
So true. My wife started to listen to his videos and it helped her sleep. I tried it and I literally could not get past about 10 min. of any video. More effective than most sleeping medicines I've taken.
the one that scares me the most is definitely the Duncan Macpherson one. The way he was obviously murdered by manslaughter and his body was hidden and covered for 14 years but never got justice although the austrian ski resort likely knew exactly thats what had happened and still covered it up, such a tragic and terrifying way to die. Condolences to his parents and i pray that they remain strong.
I love Mr ballen and his story telling, it reminds me of the good Ole days before tv and radio when family members would sit around the fire and tell stories. I'm sure people looked forward to this . I for one love listening to him at work , I do manual hard labor so there isn't much thought to be put into the work I do so I can just zone out to the story telling while my body goes into pilot mode while my inner child just sits Indian style inside my head visualizing every word firming the perfect movie in my head . When Mr ballen first started out most of his stories almost always about the paranormal, missing- 411 , and or mysterious supernatural happenings that could not be explained...... but recently in the last couple of years I stopped listening to him mainly because his stories are mostly about "MURDER-PORN" or Unintentional Suicide - Porn" and I really can't sustain those kind of stories because the way he tells the story it actually makes you feel like either you are there witnessing the act or the very act is happening to you just like the way he explains in this interview the way the human brain works 💪
Mr Ballen did a video on "floxing" and how Cipro was causing tendons to snap. I had just taken my 3rd antibiotic and was feeling pain, I watched his video and stopped immediately. His video saved me!
I'm so glad you stopped taking it. Since watching that episode, I've told my family and friends the story and urged them to never take it. The last time I was prescribed an antibiotic, I made sure to look up to see if it was in the Cipro family of medications, which it was. Not surprisingly, I didn't touch the stuff and asked for something else. I feel horrible about the countless people that have been afflicted by this horrible medication. Cipro and related meds should be completely banned.
My favorite story from Mr Ballen is about the teen boy in the cabin, haunted by a tall ghost but I realized that what I'm a fan of is his story telling brilliance.
The one i can't stop thinking about is the guy who was learning to ski or snowboard. He went off alone and ended up breaking his leg, which must have already been scary and then gets run over by a snow machine that severs his body parts, but he's still alive, and it gets worse. Then the man who ran him over, instead of helping him, thows him into a crevice and buries him with snow. He was found decades later. Awful.
Ooooh, i remember that mall tunnel story with the elderly man... My fave Mr. Ballen episodes are always the "Places you're not supposed to go, but they went anyway" ones.
The story and case that will always stick with me is the story / case of two Netherland girls that missing in Panama. Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon. The weird way their belongings were found, the pictures (the deleted picture that shouldn’t have been possible without a computer), the 911 and 211 call attempt, the body parts that were found….and yet it was declared a freak accident despite everything pointing to murder.
Love Mr. Ballen and his great ability to tell and inform of events that happened. He's like the voice of reason and caution that helps me when I might have things to do. 👍
Thr story he mentioned about the older lady is one that I heard years ago and never forgot. Especially about how close she was to the trail and how she accepted her face. It was so tragic.
The stories about people getting stuck in small spaces are the ones that really get me. Like getting stuck in a chimney and slowly dying or getting trapped in a closet and breaking the wall only to hit a water pipe and have ice cold water pour over you for days then die but the worst one is where a man got stuck head first in a small pocket in a cave unable to move his arms
Yes!! That was one story I really reacted to, with high blood pressure, rapid breathing, and anxiety 😬 To imagine me or someone being stuck upside down, unable to move, the pressure building up inside your head, is truly terrifying!
I love me ballen. The story that still gives me chills when i think about it is a paranormal one, only one to happen to mr ballen himself, i believw whem he was 16. He went to a friends cabin with him and his mom and another friend to snowboard. The way he deacribea everything is fantastic
The womans name is Geraldine Largay "Inchworm". A tragic story indeed. So many mistakes were made but it does offer us the opportunity to learn from her mistakes. She was infamous for her poor sense of direction and did not have a personal locating beacon. Geraldine was afraid of being alone, had high anxiety and was apparently on medication for that so no doubt, without her meds her situation got wors and worse. Geraldine did spend a lot of time hiking but she was wholly unprepared for the true challenges of a backpacking trip such as this without support. She left the AT just to defecate or urinate but went waaaay too far off trail into incredibly dense vegetation/forest. When she tried to go back she had no clue which direction to walk and obviously, went the wrong way. The search was focused on the wrong area based on another hiker who "thought" she saw Geraldine when it was later determined, it was not she. Lots of manpower and other resources wasted there. It truly is a blessing she was found. At least her family has some peace
I enjoy mr.ballen because He has lived the worse people have to offer the hurt and pain they can inflict on each other but when there is a place in his stories that provoke strong emotion ...the only emotion i have seen him register is sorrow....this is a man a real man that doesnt have to brag about being an alpha or a sigma even though he is one of the very few that has the right to claim those titles in every sense of the word .....i only wish kids and adults would take people like mr.ballen as thier heros instead of the spineless plastic sycophants they have chosen today ....i know it doesnt mean much coming from me but he has earned my respect and admiation
His stories have helped me get so much yard work done😂 I went thru a rough patch with my ocd and intrusive thoughts because of my job I spend a lot of time alone. MrBallen’s stories were my “go to” get myself out of the intrusive thought loops. It’d give my mind a distraction and helped me over come that part of my life so thank you.
Some of us never feel safe and so when we listen to his stories and we find ourselves safe at the end of them it's a silence in our overworked brains and bodies that we don't get to experience often, a silence in knowing in that moment that we are completely safe... inevitably our bodies will rev up again and the quiet doesn't last long, which is why a lot of us will brings watch his stories. John's stories helped me as I was coming out of a very emotionally abusive relationship with a cluster B personality, everywhere I turned and every word I said didn't feel safe anymore but through those stories I was able to teach my body that I am safe again, I haven't had a panic attack in 6 months now, and I attribute a lot of that recovery to John. I know his so-called " brothers" are coming down hard on him, but I hope John understands how essential he is to so many people and how loved he is.
The one with the mom and her two daughters in the boat with the stranger is the most messed up story I've heard it pops into my mind now and then and makes me feel so sad for them.
Did my own research on that one because of the sheer evil of it. I don't believe that the guy who was convicted, did it. Think about it.....3 grown women vs 1 man. Even his boat was way too small to accomodate that scenario. The convicted guy was a DEA informant. He was a small-timer ( fraud, etc. NO convicted violence in his past) Perfect Patsy, if you know what I mean. == THIS crime was done by more than one Psychopath. ( and it wasn't their first rodeo.) Edit : His name was Oba Chandler. It happened in 1992. Executed 2011.
I worked at the westfield/fox valley mall in Aurora IL and it is concrete corridors all behind the stores and the doors would lock behind you but let you out. I had to bang on random doors because no one would answer mine. I finally found one that let me in. Some random knick knack store. I could see someone getting lost. Eventually if you mark your paths you end up at the loading docks/garbage compactors
The one that haunts me to this day is the one where the guy goes missing and he actually has a cellphone. Trapped underground somewhere all the other workers went looking for him. It turned out to be a body part place where they took whatever they needed and chained people. Awful, that things like that happen
The story that sticks with me the most is a young man who was in college, and he left his jacket in a friends dorm, I think. He tried getting someone to buzz him in, but no one would. He found a door that was supposed to be locked in this area you had to drop into. It was dark in there, and he was trying to feel his way through. He didn't know it was the electrical room. He accidentally slipped his finger into an opening and was electricuted. His body stayed there between the wall and electrical panels and was constantly being zapped with electricity. People looked for him but never found him until the janitior heard a weird popping sound and found the remains. The police did look into the room but wouldn't have seen him in there trapped. The electricity was arcing to the liquified remains on the ground because he had been in there so long constantly being zapped. That was the popping sound the janitor heard and went looking for. The nightmares and horrific thoughts his family and close friends must have. And possibly the person who didn't let him in. There's so many vividly haunting stories. But, to me, that one is just so so sad to think of. Im pretty sure the school was found negligent. But, that won't bring back their child. There's nothing worse than a parent losing a child.
The one where the young child is with his family one second and then disappears without a trace but weeks later is found up a mountain, no harm, no foul, at impossible odds. A pro hiker tried to replicate the distance and conditions and couldn't do it. The child was clean as a whistle asking for Mommy. It really makes you think what's out there.
I find it comforting when I listen to mr. Ballen. I don't think it's to do with the content, its how he talks. He has a very calming voice and personality so that is why I think some people find it so relaxing too. You rock Mr. Ballen!

Mr Ballen is one of my favorite comfort RUclipsrs not really for the genre of what he tells which I’m totally into. I’ve been into true crime for many many years. It’s just the way he tells it is so comforting. He could tell a story about the color of princesses dresses and I would be comforted. He just has that kind of voice.

My favorite story from Mr Ballen so far is the one about an elderly man who decides to go hiking alone through a very difficult trail in California on winter. Various people he meets on his travel warn him and advice him to go back because storms are coming but he stubbornly refuses and keeps going forward. This man ends up trapped at the bottom of a ravine and dies. Then, exactly one year later( or two? Nevertheless, the day and month coincided), a lost couple end up in the same ravine and finds the man's diary along with some matches. The boyfriend then decides to use the matches to provoke a fire as a signal. Rescuers arrived and saved them, thanks to that stubborn man who died in the same place but at a different time.

I knew him. The man’s name was John Donovan. He used to walk everywhere. He grew up in an orphanage, and he had no family. He worked as a social worker for many many years and helped hundreds of people. He was also terrified of technology and you couldn’t really get him to use a cell phone or a computer. It’s a very sad story, but knowing John he would’ve been tickled pink that his mission in life was to save those two people.

For me, the worst story was the one of the older guy who before surgery was given a drug that paralyzed him, but the doctors forgot to give him the anesthesia medicine. I couldn't imagine the pain he went through during those 16 minutes.
Him just randomly screaming and being afraid was what got me.
I WANT YOU TO KNOW... NO JOKE.. THIS was honest to GOD me (without any cutting).. Brooke Army Medical Center in Ssn Antonio... Generally great docs like (Doctor KING - World class).. I WOKE UP and couldn't talk but I could see EVERYTHING, and at least feel how cold my body was (burn stuff pretty much tosses the traditional human body temps out the window)... I was rapid eye moving, looking around and wondering why there were SO MANY people in the OR... (BAMC was at least partially a teaching facility)... I FELT like a damn bug on a petrie dish.. I could NOT TALK.. I think I was intubated anyway, but I could NOT move.. I'm watching the "students" on the second story windows looking down at me, taking notes, and the (I'm going to call them arseholes, though that came from serious concern... I FINALLY got the attention of a lil (BIG) peeerick student? Teachers assistant? Internet? "He's awake!!!" Then I got the mask and more syrup in my IV.. I watched them for at least a minute after they dumped more in my IV, and they likely had to close my eyes... IF they felt like it.. Honestly, I probably shouldn't be alive... I should most likely died leading up to one of many skin graft 'processes'... I have NEVER EVER felt so fkn... Scared would be an understantment... All drugs considered, and while I don't believe in "bigfoot", and I don't think I would rate alien attention... I thought I was a monkey being disected... Whoooo.. I had forgotten about this... IT IS A REAL THING... The docs could have done whatever they wanted and I had NO ability to do anything about it... LOL. THANKS fOR THE MEMORY... ;) The showers were even worse.... But, I got a free life out of it... Regardless... (WOW.. I don't have "flash backs" or "PTSD" (that I or anyone so far has realized - No cold sweats... Only piss a bit racing to a toilet here and there when I gotta go and am sleeping deep. :p (((LEVITY))). ((((MOSTLY)))... I'm actually glad you brought this up... Absolute true story and I have HUGE 3 ring binders of records I haven't looked at once after telling my lawyers to efff off.. (Friend related innocent accident) I feel like I liar now on some of my responses saying that I am not scared or fear anything.. Totally legit... Only letting friends or loved ones down on my water or lifetime... This actually did scare the EFFF out of me... Talk about being the fly on the wall... Again thanks for the reminder.. Same here. I like hiking alone and a few months ago I turned and abruptly ran into a couple only a few feet away. They were acting really odd, and the guy got a bit too close to me and asked me for directions to a landmark on the trail that was really obvious, but more importantly behind both of us already. I could already hear MrBallen telling my story in my head. Luckily they walked off in that direction, but I was so spooked that I started damn near running and turning my head. In hindsight, they may have been on drugs of some kind or something, but it still scared the shit out of me.
@@RorinoTheGreat I often wonder at these things. How many times have we all come across a dodgy person or situation and narrowly avoided a close call without knowing It. A lot of these horror stories start so unsuspecting and innocently.
My girlfriend walked the dog the other week really early in the morning and it was still dark she told me there was a guy being really weird with his hood up and a neck warmer covering the bottom half of his face. He came up and asked her something and the dog started going crazy at him and scared him then he just rushed off.
It makes you wonder, did she narrowly avoid something bad just by the dog being there or was it just an innocent encounter. I suppose it's better to not know than to find out. Because too find out would mean mrballen could be telling your story one day. If one there was a way to know what situations we were getting ourselves into ahead of time.
I think a bigger part of the fascination is a survival mechanism. We want to know and understand these tragedies to ultimately avoid finding ourselves in the situation. We think of ways to avoid getting in the situation or think of ways to get out of that type of situation should we find ourselves in it.

Yeah I find myself ruminating on whether or not the victim could have avoided the situation and how with a majority of true crime cases. More often than not I believe it is so. Infidelity, love triangles, greed etc.

The one story he told that sticks with me more than any other was of the old lady who lived a rather lonely and solitary life, fell through some floorboards in her house into a tight space between two brick walls that were part of the house's foundation, and was unable to get out, and a year or two later all that was found of her was her skeletal remains, complete with the clothes she was wearing.

The Nutty Putty Caves one still haunts me. I live not far from them. The slow, unstoppable escalation from one simple misjudgment-all while being only feet away from family and friends but still totally inextricable-is simply awful.

@@cuppycakey5013 No, he was stuck in a cave, basically wedged upside down, and they ended up having to leave him. They couldn't even retrieve the body after he died. Ended up sealing off the entrance, effectively turning the whole cave system into his tomb.
The husband and wife who got tied to the end of a heavy boat anchor that got thrown overboard stuck with me. He held on for as long as he could to the edge of the boat before they went to the bottom of the ocean.

I used to binge all the horror and true crime channels on RUclips but I had to stop about 2 years back it was making me so depressed and messing with my mental health. One of the best decisions I ever made, I do come back every few months and listen to 1 or 2 videos

A story that haunts me is about a guy who had a great family, a wife and two kids, nice house, and a really nice job, spend a lot of time with the kids fishing on vacations Etc. The wife was his high school sweetheart and they were a perfect couple. Then all the sudden he woke up in s hospital room and found out that he had actually been in a coma for 5 years, was single and was never married nor had any children. He fell into a deep depression because basically his entire life no longer nor ever existed .
For him it was like his wife and children had died. He never recovered because it was so real it was a if he lost everything

Some of the details are off but yeah presumably you mean The Lamp, that one is seriously mindfuck material. One significant detail is he wasn't in a coma for 5 years, nor did he wake up in a hospital. He was knocked out cold and awoke either on the ground where it happened or as he was helped by some security guard or similar, either in a car or being carried towards a car to rush him to the hospital. He was unconsciou for minutes at most and during that time he experienced a whole lifetime that was all just fantasy, which makes the thing way worse in my mind.. And there's no real way of knowing we aren't in that same situation right now. Not entirely unlike simulation theory but just as with that, there's no point in dwelling on it since we can never know unless brought out of it, much less prove anything..
This one. I've had nightmares that I've waken up from my real life and was still married to my ex and didn't have my 5 kids with my current wife. Its terrifying.

Yea.. The one that I think got Alot of people was the one he did on 9/11 💔 You could Visibly see Mr Ballen getting choked up as he spoke about what happened that day.. I was about to explain the part he was talking about but I don't even wanna bring it back up 💔 That Moved me and obviously Mr Ballen as well.. I think everyone who was able to Remember that time remembered what happened on 9/11.. I had just turned 10 and don't remember much of that year but I remember that day for some reason 💯 I remember an adult telling us what happened and me not taking it seriously and laughing thinking he was talking about a Movie 🎥 but he just had this Sadness on his face that I didn't understand.. I walk in The house and I'm watching it on TV and I think the serious Tone in the environment (Well in All the Adults) Made me try to Laugh to lighten people up but Nobody was laughing or smiling.. So I just watched, Not understanding at the time just how Significant and Sad the situation was.. Knowing myself, had I been old enough to join the Military 🪖 I would have (Assuming I didn't understand at the time what REALLY Happened), I would have been Angry it was happening but it was one Aspect of the whole situation that would have probably made me Break down and that's where Mr Ballen got choked up at as he spoke about it.. My eyes got watery as Mr Ballen voice cracked and eyes got Watery. Horrific Day indeed 💯💔 It's Crazy to me that even though I didn't understand what was happening at the time, I somehow still remembered that day 💯 That's actually One of 3 Memories I have that year.. My Memory didn't really kick in until just before I turned 12. For me the one that stuck is the strange but true story of the girl having her entire family go into the cellar and dying from toxic potatoes. She went to having a big family to being orphaned in less than an hour. She witnessed the last moments of all of her family. All because of potatoes.

As a fan of Mr Ballen, I can say that what attracts me to see his stories is the possibility to learn how things can go wrong, and I use this knowledge to avoid these situations in my life... in my opinion it helps me to protect myself better.
I can imagine that all of us MrBallen listeners have a better respect for ever lowering ourselves into a cramped space with our arms pinned, or double checking that doors will not lock behind us if we find ourselves in tight areas such as a closet. That, and I can assume none of us are going spelunking ANY time soon. Ever.

The ones that have bothered me the most are about people who are just doing their job but the equipment malfunctions and they end up being burned alive. That has got to be one of the worst ways to die, I always feel so sorry for them.

There was the time a NASCAR racer got lit on fire, but I believe the gasses that caused the fire or something resulted in the fire not being visible to us, so the driver was just flailing around burning alive as people watched confused. Iirc he made it out safely, but still, invisible fire is a terrifying thought.

I operate a crematorium and you see all kinds of stuff, not just during the cremation process but like intense, brutal manners of death, and after awhile it just become normal. Children on the other hand you never get used to, I feel him on that one!
I was a medic for a while and cant completely relate. Vast majority of the job never phased me, but calls involving children did.
Now i have a daughter and even thinking of some of those situations makes me want to cry

The mr ballen story that has stuck with me was about the family who got stuck in their car in the middle of nowhere. There was snow everywhere and after a few days no one had come to rescue them. Instead the dad decided to go looking for help and he died. But his footprints were seen by helicopters and they were able to find his wife and children safe. The thing that sticks with me is that he died believing he failed his family when in fact he saved them.
I think the main fascination is that some of these stories highlight how one bad decision or just a momentary lapse in judgement can lead to death. I think we also realize just how easily we could find ourselves in the same or a similar situation.
I have followed Mr Ballen from the beginning, and one of the main reasons I love him (apart from him being an amazing storyteller), is his empathy and his humanity. If he ever starts showing an attitude of his own self-importance, I’ll be incredibly sad and stop watching him, but I don’t think that will happen. Thanks for presenting these wonderful interviews, guys. ❤️

I have PTSD, the one about the guys being sucked into the tube underwater took me like 10 times of going back to watch small amounts. That one was freaking intense! If your imagination can put you into these scenarios, it’s pretty scary. I’m a combat infantry veteran of the afghan conflict. I have this weird thing with empathy, an overactive imagination and an issue with grief lately.

The reason MrBallen videos have a soothing effect isn't the content (which is great btw), but he himself. He could switch to a totally different genre and people would still follow him. He is just really gifted in presenting.
I also think, after watching so many videos it is good to learn from some mistakes or choices people make, there are a lot of stories Mrballen tells that are less well-known and have information that someone else can learn from.
What's sad to me is that. No one questions the constant abuse and harrasment the 'Like' button has to go through ever since the birth of Mr. Ballen podcast.

This type of story hits home. I've lost the trail many times, and these stories make you realize how real the game I play is. Listening to how people have made mistakes and died has made me a better hiker.
I’ve always been someone who doesn’t go off trail but the one story I read a few years ago about the French couple who lost the trail markers in New Mexico and died from thirst but their son lived because they gave him all their water stuck with me. It told me to one, always have water and probably other provisions, but two stay conservative in my approach to taking risks.
The “one” for me was the lady who died in the bathroom utility closet in her timeshare 😢 I’ve learned to never go places alone or at least without telling someone to check on me and to never stop fighting ! So many of these stories including the one I mentioned they were so close but gave up
NO! It was this one for me too!! I still get goosebumps when I think about it. She was so close to freedom (or someone calling for help) too! 🥲

I always take my phone with me when I go to that kind of spaces when there is no one around, especially after that story. Like a bathroom in a place I worked at where I often worked alone, but there still were the possibilty that someone could show up, so I had to lock the door to the lavatory. Just the thought of having to sit there for hours and hours and not knowing when anyone shows up...
He is such an amazing storyteller. 2 stories have ever truly freaked me out or caused me to lay awake at night thinking about how disturbing they were.
The man that was accidentally left awake during surgery, and the couple who tried to sell their yacht and suddenly disappeared. The ending of these stories I won’t spoil, but they’re horrific. Truly horrendous. Messed me up for a while.

The Missing 411 stuff have always been my favorites to watch and follow because I and my whole family are a wilderness family and we love hiking, mountain bikes, and we love tough camping, but some of those stories we read or hear about really make us stop and be more vigilant in our caution when out hiking or in the mountains, especially when alone, because we could very easily end up being another one of those Missing 411 cases we often hear about.
Mr Ballen really brought to light a lot of the David Paulidas cases and in a very mature and serious way, but still shows respect to all in the videos.
I ordered most of the missing 411 books during covid(lockdown), and the stories about children absolutely devastated me. I got really depressed. My husband and I have twin boys. So, I agree with Mr Ballen on that, anything to do with harm that comes to children....I just can't do it.
The final letter the woman wrote said something like, "it would be the greatest kindness if you would deliver the belongings in this bag to my family." She wrote about her love for her family and what a happy life she had led.
In a world that has made life so over complicated I find the simplicity of a genuine person just telling stories (brilliantly I might add) is something we can connect to and challenge our imagination to paint the pictures he is wording out for us. No effects, no screens just pure words and mind. Best channel on RUclips in my opinion.
Another reason why that kind of content brings comfort is due to the fact that many people are struggling and are miserable, but they are thankful that they are not in the situation some of the victims find themselves in. It makes you appreciate what you have, even if what you have is not much. I find myself after a miserable day of work saying "I'm glad I'm not in that situation" when I hear of someone else's unfortunate fate.
Mr Ballen’s demeanour and his ability to tell a story is actually helpful for people who already suffer from PTSD, anxiety and depression. He has built a supportive and very positive community, a safe space in the social mediaverse for people who know that bad things happen to good people, or cautionary tales of people who haven’t used their commonsense and gotten themselves in trouble. But it’s much more about the community that Mr Ballen has built, and that’s all down to who he is, that has made him so popular.
The story that still sticks with me was the one with the woman who was beaten, stabbed (or shot, don't remember) and thrown off a cliff but survived and fought her way back alone
i believe she actually had her arm or leg chopped off.
I love the stories of survival like that the most. I hate when I’m really hoping, then I hear the words “found deceased”. It’s heartbreaking.

I have noticed that he doesn't post any gruesome content about kids... as a Mum and partner, these cases really do hit home and is therefore really appreciated!!!
He does tho. I can remember two off the top of my head. I don't remember the exact names, but it's something like "He had plans for her" and "Down the hill". Nothing bad happened in the first one but the second one is the most shocking of all his stories to me. There is a video of the murderer, filmed by the two schoolgirls he murdered, right before he did it. And he shows the video too, the authorities got the video off one of the girl's phone and i guess they shared it publicly to find him. But they never did. He's probably still out there.

I know for me and a lot of others I know in the true crime community, it’s partially what John said about experiencing fear and discomfort safely, but it’s also almost a way to be prepared for IF any of these things were to happen in your own life. It almost feels like, by listening to the stories with both good and bad endings, you feel a sense of preparedness to face the world a little bit more confidently.
I also know that my interest, like many others, stems from a life of personal trauma and trying to make sense of the world in the context of my own history and what happens to others. It feels like a connection to others when you have a similar trauma that they also got through, and leaves you feeling a bit of comfort to be reminded that you aren’t alone (personally, anyway). I also know I have to sometimes take breaks from listening to this genre of content if my headspace isn’t doing well, because the negatives of hearing all of the bad things in the world can become too much to handle in those times.
Hey MrBallen, I do remember this and it brought me to tears. She was with a friend of her. Even her husband knew that she went on a hike also. Her friend had to leave because of something. But the lady continue on hike and you know the rest of story, truly heartbreaking 😔😔😔😔

Personally, I listen to these stories mainly because it leave me feeling grateful for the life I have. Working in an air conditioned office and having 'only' a 2 day weekend isn't so bad compared to starving to death, and baking in the sun for 2 months on a life raft in the middle of the Pacific.
Mr Ballens best story was an old old one. It’s was first got me to follow him. Where the teen boys dad died and before they sold the cabin the boy wanted to stay there. And he was tormented by a demon creature. The SAME EXACT thing happened to me. Which is why it’s still my favorite to this day and I wish he’d do more stories like this.
It was his own personal experience too. Wild!
I think the story that got to me the most was a fairly short one, but was seriously brutal. It's about a woman who was inspecting a truck on a construction site inspecting a truck, and the driver of a bulldozer didn't see here, and turned his truck on and drove right into her, so she fell in the shovel, and no one could hear her screaming because it was too noisy. Then the shovel picked up a huge load of sand, burying the woman under thousands of pounds of sand, which is terrible enough. But then the bulldozer drove over and dumped the sand into a sand crusher, and she managed to get up over the lid of it, and people saw her and rushed to help her, but her leg got caught and she got pulled into the crusher. Just horrifying. I mean, there would be nothing left of her. I can only imagine having a funeral with not even a little bit of my loved one to bury. So sad and terrifying.

The woman’s name was Geraldine who got lost in the woods. It was featured on North Woods Law. They searched for her for 3 years and finally found her remains and tent about 150ft from the trail. It was so sad. The Officers were devastated they could never find her.
How does that even happen? Being lost for 3 years 150ft from the trail.
I like all of his content. As a welder I have him playing while I’m m at work and his content gets me through the day. Having to do hundreds of pieces. I forget I’m working because I’m right in the moment of the story.
Part of it from my perspective is coming to terms with the fact that some situations are not survivable regardless of what you do. Everyone will be terrified at some point & every one of us will die. Accept it & you will may appreciate and enjoy your life more.
That Ballen is such a wonderful narrator makes it so interesting to listen to his stories even though many are so gruesome. His voice is mesmerizing.
People who live mundane lives with little conflict are often drawn to stories of extreme circumstances. It's pure escapism from the doldrums of their lives. I think telling these stories might actually be a form of therapy for Mr. Ballen. A man who has been in situations that concern life or death. Wonderful storyteller, btw.

The woman leaving words for her family behind also reminded me of my mother. She was supposed to have a heart battery installed and they decided she wasn't a candidate for it, and the device keeping her going was stressing her kidneys, so we had to sort of " turn off " my mother the next day, and the night before she left some sweet, short profound notes on her facebook page, not even saying goodbye, just saying that she didn't know what was going to happen the next day but that she has given it up to god and she loved all of us. I still have a hard time looking at those. I could never be as graceful as she was about dying. Especially considering how hard she fought to live over the course of her life.
The comfort is not the story, but rather The story teller.
the thing that strikes me so much about mr ballen is that he covers every single one of his stories with such deep empathy. you never forget that the people he is describing are real people with real passions and real relationships
Whenever I watch Mr.Ballen videos, a big part of me always roots for whoever is going through their horror. It's nice when they survive in the end, rare, but nice.
The mall also still bothers me. That poor old man. It reminded me of a story that happened in my area. A man was using his motorized wheelchair to go out in his backyard, maybe a pasture or something, and his battery ran out, stranding him out in the field, and he died of heat exposure before his family could find him out there. Breaks my heart when it involves someone older or someone helpless like that.
The one that still messes me up is the one about the mom and her two daughters taking the trip on the boat with a stranger.... absolutely brutal.

I think more specifically, Mr Ballen himself is so down to earth and relatable, he has become the focus!! I absolutely watch his videos to hear his voice and storytelling to take me off my anxiety. I really do find him calming! He really did talk me through a time of my ongoing grief of the loss of my mom. I discovered him and rather than think about reality, I just listened to him tell me a story through each video and for a few minutes I was calmed. It was powerful and I am grateful to him for it!

It's fascinating that you said this. I do volunteer work around death the cases that stick with me aren't the graphic, gorey cases. They are the simple cases that parallel or resonate with an aspect of my life at that moment. I've thought it was strange that the cases I thought should bother me didn't, but the cases I didn't think much of in the moment really stayed around in my mind. Thank you so much for this topic!
My guess is the story that still haunts him is one he remembers. I can’t imagine the story about the guy getting cooked alive on the factory floor by his son-in-law not haunting everyone who’s heard it

So true. My wife started to listen to his videos and it helped her sleep. I tried it and I literally could not get past about 10 min. of any video. More effective than most sleeping medicines I've taken.
the one that scares me the most is definitely the Duncan Macpherson one. The way he was obviously murdered by manslaughter and his body was hidden and covered for 14 years but never got justice although the austrian ski resort likely knew exactly thats what had happened and still covered it up, such a tragic and terrifying way to die. Condolences to his parents and i pray that they remain strong.

I read about the lady that fired on the Appalachian Trail. It has stuck with me since I read it. It's like i knew her.
I love Mr ballen and his story telling, it reminds me of the good Ole days before tv and radio when family members would sit around the fire and tell stories. I'm sure people looked forward to this .
I for one love listening to him at work , I do manual hard labor so there isn't much thought to be put into the work I do so I can just zone out to the story telling while my body goes into pilot mode while my inner child just sits Indian style inside my head visualizing every word firming the perfect movie in my head . When Mr ballen first started out most of his stories almost always about the paranormal, missing- 411 , and or mysterious supernatural happenings that could not be explained...... but recently in the last couple of years I stopped listening to him mainly because his stories are mostly about "MURDER-PORN" or Unintentional Suicide - Porn" and I really can't sustain those kind of stories because the way he tells the story it actually makes you feel like either you are there witnessing the act or the very act is happening to you just like the way he explains in this interview the way the human brain works 💪

Mr Ballen did a video on "floxing" and how Cipro was causing tendons to snap. I had just taken my 3rd antibiotic and was feeling pain, I watched his video and stopped immediately. His video saved me!
I'm so glad you stopped taking it. Since watching that episode, I've told my family and friends the story and urged them to never take it. The last time I was prescribed an antibiotic, I made sure to look up to see if it was in the Cipro family of medications, which it was. Not surprisingly, I didn't touch the stuff and asked for something else. I feel horrible about the countless people that have been afflicted by this horrible medication. Cipro and related meds should be completely banned.

My favorite story from Mr Ballen is about the teen boy in the cabin, haunted by a tall ghost but I realized that what I'm a fan of is his story telling brilliance.
The one i can't stop thinking about is the guy who was learning to ski or snowboard. He went off alone and ended up breaking his leg, which must have already been scary and then gets run over by a snow machine that severs his body parts, but he's still alive, and it gets worse. Then the man who ran him over, instead of helping him, thows him into a crevice and buries him with snow. He was found decades later. Awful.

Ooooh, i remember that mall tunnel story with the elderly man... My fave Mr. Ballen episodes are always the "Places you're not supposed to go, but they went anyway" ones.
The story and case that will always stick with me is the story / case of two Netherland girls that missing in Panama. Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon. The weird way their belongings were found, the pictures (the deleted picture that shouldn’t have been possible without a computer), the 911 and 211 call attempt, the body parts that were found….and yet it was declared a freak accident despite everything pointing to murder.
Love Mr. Ballen and his great ability to tell and inform of events that happened. He's like the voice of reason and caution that helps me when I might have things to do. 👍
Thr story he mentioned about the older lady is one that I heard years ago and never forgot. Especially about how close she was to the trail and how she accepted her face. It was so tragic.
The stories about people getting stuck in small spaces are the ones that really get me. Like getting stuck in a chimney and slowly dying or getting trapped in a closet and breaking the wall only to hit a water pipe and have ice cold water pour over you for days then die but the worst one is where a man got stuck head first in a small pocket in a cave unable to move his arms
Yes!! That was one story I really reacted to, with high blood pressure, rapid breathing, and anxiety 😬 To imagine me or someone being stuck upside down, unable to move, the pressure building up inside your head, is truly terrifying!
I love me ballen. The story that still gives me chills when i think about it is a paranormal one, only one to happen to mr ballen himself, i believw whem he was 16. He went to a friends cabin with him and his mom and another friend to snowboard. The way he deacribea everything is fantastic
The womans name is Geraldine Largay "Inchworm". A tragic story indeed. So many mistakes were made but it does offer us the opportunity to learn from her mistakes.
She was infamous for her poor sense of direction and did not have a personal locating beacon.
Geraldine was afraid of being alone, had high anxiety and was apparently on medication for that so no doubt, without her meds her situation got wors and worse.
Geraldine did spend a lot of time hiking but she was wholly unprepared for the true challenges of a backpacking trip such as this without support.
She left the AT just to defecate or urinate but went waaaay too far off trail into incredibly dense vegetation/forest. When she tried to go back she had no clue which direction to walk and obviously, went the wrong way.
The search was focused on the wrong area based on another hiker who "thought" she saw Geraldine when it was later determined, it was not she. Lots of manpower and other resources wasted there.
It truly is a blessing she was found. At least her family has some peace
My fav is when he went snowboarding with his friends family after the father had passed. Its literally called "what i saw that night still haunts me".
I enjoy mr.ballen because He has lived the worse people have to offer the hurt and pain they can inflict on each other but when there is a place in his stories that provoke strong emotion ...the only emotion i have seen him register is sorrow....this is a man a real man that doesnt have to brag about being an alpha or a sigma even though he is one of the very few that has the right to claim those titles in every sense of the word .....i only wish kids and adults would take people like mr.ballen as thier heros instead of the spineless plastic sycophants they have chosen today ....i know it doesnt mean much coming from me but he has earned my respect and admiation

His stories have helped me get so much yard work done😂 I went thru a rough patch with my ocd and intrusive thoughts because of my job I spend a lot of time alone. MrBallen’s stories were my “go to” get myself out of the intrusive thought loops. It’d give my mind a distraction and helped me over come that part of my life so thank you.
Some of us never feel safe and so when we listen to his stories and we find ourselves safe at the end of them it's a silence in our overworked brains and bodies that we don't get to experience often, a silence in knowing in that moment that we are completely safe... inevitably our bodies will rev up again and the quiet doesn't last long, which is why a lot of us will brings watch his stories. John's stories helped me as I was coming out of a very emotionally abusive relationship with a cluster B personality, everywhere I turned and every word I said didn't feel safe anymore but through those stories I was able to teach my body that I am safe again, I haven't had a panic attack in 6 months now, and I attribute a lot of that recovery to John. I know his so-called " brothers" are coming down hard on him, but I hope John understands how essential he is to so many people and how loved he is.
We can hear the story 10 different time and 10 different ways. Its the story teller and his ability to draw you in.
Its comforting because it accentuates the safety of ones own home similar to how ones bed feels more cozy when there is a storm outside.
I think sometimes life is so bad for us to hear someone has it worse can make us feel less alone.
I've watching Ballen since the beginning and I knew from the very first story that he's an amazing story teller, I love this guy
I have terminal cancer. So not much bothers me.. l love the way mr ballen expresses the story. And he’s voice is the bomb.. he helps my mentality
The one with the mom and her two daughters in the boat with the stranger is the most messed up story I've heard it pops into my mind now and then and makes me feel so sad for them.
That one hit hard. There are some real monsters out there, disguised as human beings.

Did my own research on that one because of the sheer evil of it.
I don't believe that the guy who was convicted, did it.
Think about it.....3 grown women vs 1 man.
Even his boat was way too small to accomodate that scenario.
The convicted guy was a DEA informant.
He was a small-timer ( fraud, etc. NO convicted violence in his past)

I worked at the westfield/fox valley mall in Aurora IL and it is concrete corridors all behind the stores and the doors would lock behind you but let you out. I had to bang on random doors because no one would answer mine. I finally found one that let me in. Some random knick knack store. I could see someone getting lost. Eventually if you mark your paths you end up at the loading docks/garbage compactors
The one that haunts me to this day is the one where the guy goes missing and he actually has a cellphone. Trapped underground somewhere all the other workers went looking for him. It turned out to be a body part place where they took whatever they needed and chained people. Awful, that things like that happen

The story that sticks with me the most is a young man who was in college, and he left his jacket in a friends dorm, I think. He tried getting someone to buzz him in, but no one would. He found a door that was supposed to be locked in this area you had to drop into. It was dark in there, and he was trying to feel his way through. He didn't know it was the electrical room. He accidentally slipped his finger into an opening and was electricuted. His body stayed there between the wall and electrical panels and was constantly being zapped with electricity. People looked for him but never found him until the janitior heard a weird popping sound and found the remains. The police did look into the room but wouldn't have seen him in there trapped. The electricity was arcing to the liquified remains on the ground because he had been in there so long constantly being zapped. That was the popping sound the janitor heard and went looking for. The nightmares and horrific thoughts his family and close friends must have. And possibly the person who didn't let him in. There's so many vividly haunting stories. But, to me, that one is just so so sad to think of. Im pretty sure the school was found negligent. But, that won't bring back their child. There's nothing worse than a parent losing a child.
The one where the young child is with his family one second and then disappears without a trace but weeks later is found up a mountain, no harm, no foul, at impossible odds.
A pro hiker tried to replicate the distance and conditions and couldn't do it. The child was clean as a whistle asking for Mommy. It really makes you think what's out there.
He wasn’t clean i think, he had different clothes than what he had on before he disappeared
I find it comforting when I listen to mr. Ballen. I don't think it's to do with the content, its how he talks. He has a very calming voice and personality so that is why I think some people find it so relaxing too. You rock Mr. Ballen!

Mr Ballen is one of my favorite comfort RUclipsrs not really for the genre of what he tells which I’m totally into. I’ve been into true crime for many many years. It’s just the way he tells it is so comforting. He could tell a story about the color of princesses dresses and I would be comforted. He just has that kind of voice.
