Did you already placed a new Batch in the market ? how can i identify the good or Valid one ? Thank you
I'm really curious. I'm in need of a new camera before going on a trip as my Hero 7 is really annoying to use due to freezing and fast draining batteries. The Action 3 Adventure Combo seems like a good buy but the focus issue is a real off putter for me.

Hey there, thanks for watching! Honestly, that was my main reason for purchasing the 3, and I would like to get the 4, but in my opinion, they are just too wide for food videos, even in the standard mode. I've just upgraded from a Z6 to a Z6ii and both are pretty bulky, thought the Osmo would make that easier, but I never really considered focal length, all my videos are shot between 50mm and 105mm, Osmo 4 is 15mm in standard. When using the Osmo, there was way too much other stuff in the shot, you just can't ever get close enough, hard to focus on the food, and if you shoot in 4K and try and crop in, it just starts to look wonky, so I never really used it for food. They are great cameras and I would recommend one depending on use case, but I can't recommend them for food videos personally. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Now that you mention it, I might make a video in the next coming weeks why this ISN't a great camera for food videos, easier to explain what I'm talking about.
Amazing - thanks so much for the reply! I’m looking to film outdoors for some bits but have decided to go with a iPhone 15 pro max, with cage and lenses / filters, and also my pocket 3 with ND’s. Will see how things come out!
My original unit was dated 9/2022 but my replacement was dated 8/2022. I've known several people who got unites from 9/2022 who didn't have any issues, and I havent heard or seen any new cases for a while so I think they have corrected the problem. By this point, they know which batches had issues and I'm pretty sure they are not sending those out, too expensive to send replacements. Thanks for watching!
@@videoholic2000s I'd recommend testing the unit without updating. When you connect to the app to activate the unit, skip the 'update' and do a few test shots to see the quality. You can always log back in and update the camera later.
@@ChristopherCina thanks that's probably a good idea!! Actually, I just found that the update includes 10 bit color, which I want, so I'll probably run the updates.
I tried to make one, but the camera angle is so wide that you either have to be right on top pf the food, which makes it impossible to actually manage a recipe or you have to set it farther away and there is too much in the frame and it doesn't look good at all. It's the same reason why you don't shoot food with a wide angle and I should have realized that before trying.
The focus issue is very easy to fix yourself. There's videos on youtube showing you how. Just un screw the the lens cover and you turn the lens about a quarter turn with the middle part of some large tweezers. You can turn to whatever focal length you want.
I've seen the videos, I did consider it, but then what you have also done is voided the warranty. I just felt better having it replaced in case there were issues down the road.
First, I really enjoy your videos and your insight. Mine was made in 9/2022 and the focus is pretty soft. I've ordered another one from Best Buy which should be in tomorrow, and I'm returning this one. I was told that the chance of getting a good one increases from manufacturing date 11/2022 onward, but some, like 10/29/2022, are also OK. You can look up the mfr date online from your serial number. I'll probably keep returning them to Best Buy until I get a good one. On the GoPro website I can get the Hero 11 for $340 with veterans discount, only $10 more than the Action 3. But, when I bought a Hero 8, the 1st one didn't even turn on, the 2nd one turned on sometimes after a few clicks, shut off at will, got extremely hot running or charging, and wouldn't connect to my phone. The BB clerk talked me into trying 1 more and my 3rd one was perfect. I would expect to go through the same thing with the Hero 11. I've had things manufactured in China. I believe that early on some assembly workers didn't understand the importance of screwing in the lens just right so some came out OK and others didn't. After proper instruction most of them are probably coming out right now. I've seen some of the videos on here where people have fixed their focus and the quality is very good. I'm sure the focus issue is a mechanical one.
My original one was from 9/22 as well, the unit they replaced it with was from 8/22. The footage I uploaded was also straight out of camera, I didn't install the Dec 2 update until after that video. Now mine is tack sharp. So glad I don't have to go the GoPro route, not a fan of that company. Thanks for watching and take care!
Great news that they sent you a brand new unit and it seems to be working as it should! Also I see that they even commented on your video. Seems well worth the $19 and extra accessories! Thanks for the update, I was actually thinking of this the other day. Hope you are doing well, have a great week!
Thanks Paul! I wanted to get the video up alot sooner but got stuck on the road the last week. I will say, dealing with DJI is such a pleasure after GoPro, and yeah, they commented!!! Hi. Ordered my OA3 on launch day; received a bad one. Yeah, that's tough luck!. I've heard a few people say they want the Osmo Action but are afraid to buy in case they get a faulty unit. As far as grainy goes, I think that is just the nature of the action camera, they aren't designed to be used indoors or with low light, but to combat I always make sure to max mu ISO out at the 100-400 level in PRO settings. Good luck!! Thanks for watching!!
Yes, I'm very excited. I was a little worried it would have the same issue since I really haven't seen anything from DJI admitting there were problems, but all ended well. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching. Something I didn't mention in the video, because I never really considered it was the production dates. The unit I received originally was produced in 9/2022, while the replacement with a proper focus was an 8/2022 production date. I'm not sure if it's a situation where someone is assembling the the lens for DJI and that's where the problem is but I don't think production date matters that much. That said, I would still buy from DJI, as well as the care refresh, if for nothing else than the credit you get for each purchase. Cheers!
I honestly don't know how it affects each mode but the video prior to this one had the new update applied and still looked horrible. The footage in this video was prior to updating the firmware because I wanted to see it straight out of the box. I've seen alot of people say the focus can be fixed computationally, like the iphone and Topaz do, but I'm not sure what artifacts might be created by that.
Has anyone noticed that no one who’s received a replacement unit aren’t sharing the production date?? They’re quick to say “it’s fixed” but won’t share the details on the box, manufacturing date etc.
I did mention it in the comments, my original model was a 9/2022 production date while my replacement was an 8/2022 production date, which is what lead me to believe it was a hardware issue, not a firmware issue. I would add, my original video was filmed after I installed the update but I didn't update the replacement until after I had made those initial tests. So 'fixed' was never accurate, replaced was more correct.
I had rocksteady on so I think it's the camera compensating for the movement of me picking it. I noticed the same thing and tried to find something on that feature but nothing, so that's really all I could come up with. Camera just smooths out that motion automatically, was kinda cool!
What FOV was your example footage of leaves? I have heard reports of wider angles being sharper than linear. Some people always use wider FOV, but there are also a lot of people (especially vloggers) who almost always use the narrowest FOV, and others who use a mix of both. Did you test narrowest as well as widest settings? Since GoPro has been selling Karma parts until fairly recently I have to assume there have still been Karma drones still flying. Maybe your drone stopped working due to a fault in your drone. But since the Karma had a nasty habit of stopping working mid-air, there is probably a good safety/liability reason not to fly the Karma anywhere near people, and I suspect that GoPro realized that if they continued actively supporting the Karma, that they could easily be sued over a drone model they knew to be faulty. I wish they had fixed the issues and introduced a Mark II version, but those problems occurred around the time they nearly went broke so I guess they took some ruthless decisions to get the company back to profitability. I rather liked the Karma Grip, but it too went the way of the dinosaurs.
The wider angles were a little sharper on my original camera, but only barely. Personally, I only use the de-warp mode as I'm looking to use it for food videos and wide angle would be too much, so for the purposes of the video where there is no distortion, I stuck with de-warp for the footage. But this issue doesn't affect all cameras, you can find many reviews (I think I've watched them all) of users who didn't have the focus issue in any mode. The karma grip was great when nothing else existed for the stability, I used it alot when I launched this channel. And you are right, there are still a few drones flying but many were grounded, you can find alot of info on that from Gavin Gene's channel. He had collected over 2000 signatures of Karma owners whose drones just stopped working. As far as the recall goes, they did recall the units for the loss of power issue but then restarted then again in 2017. Both press releases are here... investor.gopro.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2016/GoPro-Announces-Karma-Recall-and-Refund-Program/default.aspx investor.gopro.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2017/GoPros-Karma-Returns/default.aspx That last one is the last press release on the Karma Drone, kind of odd for such a signature device, no? Thanks for watching.
For that particular moment in the video, that's possible considering the wind was blowing the leaves and not the building. I watched that clip back in 4k and didn't notice any major focus issues.
So the big question is are the problem ones still being shipped? I really want to pull the trigger, but, I’m still afraid. I saw the other comment where the replacement was faulty. DJI may have been extra careful about your replacement because of your channel.
Ha! I appreciate the optimism but I don't think DJI was paying attention to a little 500 sub channel like mine, maybe you're right. There are much bigger channels out there like David Manning who got one that was soft as well. They did comment though after the replacement so maybe you're right. I do know it didn't affect all the cameras, only what seems like a specific batch. I do think they are aware of the issue and if they are smart, which I believe they are, would not be shipping those affected units out. Worse case scenario, you buy one, test it on day 1 and return if it's soft. Replacements have been quick and generous. Thanks for watching!
DJI I will not charge you anything for another camera under a manufacturer's fault, if you've used your DJI care to get another camera that's your fault, but that does not cost anything to have replaced. DJ I have just replaced mine under warranty and it cost me nothing at all, but the problem is the new camera is still faulty and is also going back to them, but I have told them I do not want another new camera I want the one I'm sending back repaired by human hands and inspected so I know it's right. The new cameras off the production line are still having the same issue, and I can prove everything I'm saying.
DJI did refund my $19 replacement fee, which I appreciated. I do know the replacement unit I was sent was produced prior to the first unit I received but I will say, it is remarkably sharper than the first unit, and I made sure not to apply the update on the unit until I could get some footage off of it. I will be curious to see some footage of the unit you get back, I hope you'll post some. Cheers!
Hi Chris: Same here I am not returning, basically I don't believe there are any being returned as "fixed" I spoke with some people that got theirs back and I came to 2 conclusions by asking them for their Year and Make of the replaced unit in comparison to their old one, some of them dated back to 8/22, and if they had the FW update ver .01.01.05.40 in the replacement camera they had just received and they said NO, they had original FW like the one I had when the focus was bad, and they had to install the new FW, when they retested their cameras, which is basically what I did without returning the camera to them. I remember back in 2019 when DJI came out with the venerable Osmo Action 1 they had a lot of "back focus" problems when they first launched it and thru multiple FW updates they were able to fix the focus to what it is today, This is the reason they keep saying this is FW related Issue and not a hardware related one. I am working on a comparison video with the Action 2 that I own, basically the same sensor and modes that had no focus problems ( at least I am not aware) and I cannot see any difference between the Action 2 and the Action 3 after the FW update. I have included the first video I did after the FW update.... You tell me if I have a focusing problem. I am very satisfied. ruclips.net/video/Ihpl437FnTQ/видео.html Thank You, Luis
You're right, they definitely didn't fix my camera but I feel they made it right. The last video I did was with the new FW, I probably should have mentioned that in the video but when i read through the list of updates, I didn't see anything in regards to sharpening focus, and that focus was almost mushy. Because I had heard that the FW update was supposed to help, I did not install the update on this new unit until AFTER I had made the clips this morning. Thanks for watching, I'll check out your video, I'm very interested.
DJI thinks you might be able to apply software fixes in camera, so I guess we'll see. I did hear from a guy that the original OA had a similar issue that was eventually resolved with software fixes but I never owned one of those.
GoPro issued a recall on all Karma drones. They did this publicly due to a vibration/battery issue which made the drones potentially unsafe. You could have sent it back for a full refund. Probably still could. They didn't just mysteriously ground the Karma for no reason without explanation. That said, GoPro cameras are buggy garbage and i'd take the lesser functions of the DJI over the wider functions of the unreliable goPro.
Myself and hundreds of owners here in the US never received a recall notice, not through email, app or controller, it just stop pairing. We were never notified there was an issue and when I contacted GoPro, I was told, sorry, can't help you. I was never offered a fix, refund, credit, anything, and I was a GoPro subscriber at that time as well. So I would politely disagree. For more info, Gavin Gene has a full listing of timeline and info, you should check out that channel. He has a list of over 1000 karma owners who were given no notice when their drones stopped working.
@@ChristopherCina They issued a press release and investor statement on 8th Nov 2016. They recalled all 2500 drones sold. There was a live link on the GoPro website. You can still find the press release.
@@TRISTRAMY You are correct, that was from the initial rollout. That was a completely different issue, that was a loss of power issue. On Feb 1st, 2017 they had another press release that they were selling again, that's when I bought mine. I bought the 2nd gen with a Hero 6 as the first gen shipped with a Hero 5. They just stop pairing with controllers. Try and find a press release about the Karma Drone after Feb. 1st, 2017. There is none. Don't you find that odd? For such a high $ product?
Yes, there is a sample footage of the new unit in the video, starting at 1:13. If you mean the camera I returned, that footage is here... ruclips.net/video/mC5d0Eqydj0/видео.html
That's a good point. Like I've mentioned to other commenters, the affected unit I had was manufactured in September, 2022. The replacement unit they sent was manufactured in August. Also one was a single unit and one was a bundle. So a little bit of a crapshoot. One thing going in DJI's favor is they are very quick to turnaround and replace defective units. If I were going to buy one, I'd make sure I tested on day 1 and sent back immediately if needed, kind of a crappy way to have to go though. Cheers!
@@ChristopherCina really pleased with all the drones i got off them and the likes of the pocket 2 . But this action one i sent back as it didn’t just tick the boxes . Still prob would not buy a go pro again so not sure what to do , maybe the pocket 3 will be the answer when it comes out 🤞
mmmm but not much review done here how come you are happy without proving it,,, maybe they just updated cams firmware wich still didnt fix the issue acording to others reviews,,, so maybe time to switch to Insta now like foverver ??🤭
Understood, but I never said I was reviewing the camera, only that I had a camera that was affected by the focus issue many are experiencing, I provided sample footage of the original unit in the first video at 100% and 300% crop, after the firmware update (it was trash), and in the 2nd video, video footage of the new unit they sent me, again at 100% and 300% crop. The 2nd unit didn't have the updated firmware, I was prompted to download it when I connected to the MIMO app but I closed it out until I had the footage displayed in the 2nd video. The focus issue doesn't affect every camera, I've seen many OA3 reviews where their focus wasn't an issue. And yes, I'm happy, in my estimation the focus issue doesn't exist on my camera, I've gotten good, sharp video out of this new unit. Had I gotten a 2nd unit with the focus issue, I may have gone to Insta, but I didn't, so I won't :-) Thanks for watching!

I've seen alot of people say the focus can be fixed computationally, like the iphone and Topaz do, but I'm not sure what artifacts might be created by that.
Which camera & lens did you film the review on?
Filmed on the Nikon Z6 and a 50mm 1.8 lens.
It looked like the camera started to pan up as you approached in the opening. Is that a function, or edit?

That last one is the last press release on the Karma Drone, kind of odd for such a signature device, no? Thanks for watching.
What camera & lens are you using here?
Other than the Osmo Action 3 footage, this video was shot with a Nikon Z6 with a 50mm 1.8 Z lens. I also use a Z50 which I pair with a 20mm 1.8 lens.
Hi 300% 1:45 u can see your background much shaper then the leaf
@@ChristopherCina Thank you!
Cheers!
Hi Chris:
Same here I am not returning, basically I don't believe there are any being returned as "fixed"
I spoke with some people that got theirs back and I came to 2 conclusions by asking them for their Year and Make of the replaced unit in comparison to their old one, some of them dated back to 8/22, and if they had the FW update ver .01.01.05.40 in the replacement camera they had just received and they said NO, they had original FW like the one I had when the focus was bad, and they had to install the new FW, when they retested their cameras, which is basically what I did without returning the camera to them.

Thank You,

You're right, they definitely didn't fix my camera but I feel they made it right. The last video I did was with the new FW, I probably should have mentioned that in the video but when i read through the list of updates, I didn't see anything in regards to sharpening focus, and that focus was almost mushy. Because I had heard that the FW update was supposed to help, I did not install the update on this new unit until AFTER I had made the clips this morning. Thanks for watching, I'll check out your video, I'm very interested.
You can apply a filter post production for sharpening but what’s the point? Bye bye dji 3maybe next time!
For such a high $ product?
you didnt even give a test video?
Yes, there is a sample footage of the new unit in the video, starting at 1:13. If you mean the camera I returned, that footage is here... ruclips.net/video/mC5d0Eqydj0/видео.html
Usually DJI are on the ball, but why send out a faulty action camera unit in the first place ?? So its basically a lottery to get a good one ?
