Probably was one of hardest things that John Deacon ever did, but he did it for his "brother " Freddie and the others. I think that they all played and sang their hearts out. What an incredible man Freddie Mercury must have been as a friend and bandmate

This is such a beautiful song written by Brian about how he feels about losing Freddie. I get a little teary watching Brian's face as he seems to be trying to hold it together and even seems to go slightly pale a couple of times. The champagne glass on the piano is a tip to Freddie who at some point in every or nearly every show, he would toast the audience. I believe that the piano Brian is playing in this video is Freddie's which now sits in Brian's studio home in Surrey, England. The opening lyrics, "A hand above the water, an angel reaching for the sky" is reference to the statue of Freddie that stands next to Lake Geneva. Freddie's statue is wearing his iconic yellow jacket, his fist in the air and his microphone without the stand. I think that a lot of people forget that John lost his father when he was young, somewhere around 8 years old, I believe. When kids that age lose a parent, they never get to really grieve in a way that brings peace and everyone around them views them differently because of what they have been through. John was so traumatized by the loss of his dad that he completely lost his memory of anything that happened in his life before that day. Freddie took John under his wing, tried to protect him in a way and I think sort of became a big brother or father figure to John. I honestly believe that losing Freddie brought back all the trauma of losing his father and now losing that one person who had sort of taken his father's position in John's life. John broke when Freddie died and he was unable to visit Freddie as he was dying, it was just too much for John to bear. John didn't just retire from Queen and music after Freddie died, John pretty much retired from life.

Something I find so poignant is Brian's reaction in 1996 to the dedication of the statue to Freddie at Montreux. He said that he had been so angry listening to everyone raving about the Statue and how great it was, and all he could think was, the Statue is nice, but I just wish my friend were still here.....

Notice all the lines that are throwbacks to their other songs, too. "Another tricky situation" (from "It's a Hard Life"), "Forever paying every due" (from "We Are the Champions" - "I've paid my dues..."), "And now the party must be over" (from "Party" and "Khasoogi's Ship"). This was actually seven years after Freddie died and partially written with Princess Diana in mind as well, who'd been a friend. It was the last time the remaining three members appeared together as a band. And then the champagne glass on the piano at the end, left for Freddie.

Actually, this song was not written with Diana in mind but by the time Roger finally listened to it, Diana had just passed and Roger thought that it was so appropriate for not only Freddie but for Diana that they should do the song as Queen and so here it is. Yes, Diana loved Queen and the boys loved Diana so the final tribute as done, is to her as well as Freddie. It makes perfect sense that Brian would include Queen lyrics into his song because Brian was devastated not only about losing Freddie but at losing Queen which had been his only constant in his life for 20 years. Brian was going through a time when he literally was losing everything and Queen was just one of those great losses along with Freddie, his dad and his marriage. Tough times for the Doctor, who honestly felt that he had nothing left to live for and nearly took his own life. I am so glad he made it through it all and found the light on the other side.

@@sherryheim5504 That could be true as well! I do remember that he sent it to Roger, who let it sit in a drawer for a while, so yep. “One by one” implies more people in mind. I think Brian might have mentioned Versace too? But I can’t remember where this was, haha, or what came first. Maybe it was a little of both cases, but the song was of course principally for Freddie. Brian May have written it and then subsequent deaths inspired Roger to take another look; maybe they tweaked some things a bit after. I do know Brian couldn’t perform the song for Diana because he was finishing his PhD! Amazing man. And yes, they all had such a hard time. Everything fell on Brian all at once. It’s why it’s so touching to me that he and Roger, despite clearly being upset, defended Freddie on TV against unkind media portrayals of his lifestyle just a week after he died. They really loved him and did all they could to protect him.

@@laurenraubaugh9542 Yes, Roger even said that at their first interview after Freddie's death. When the interviewer started digging, Roger said something like, we will continue to always protect Fred so don't go trying to get us to throw any dirt. You are right about Versace, Roger mentions them when he talks about how he felt that it was time to do the song. He says both Versace and Diana had recently died and that the song seemed to ring true to him for those two as well. You are right, all four of those boys loved each other and they all understood that it was the magic of the combination of them all that made Queen the amazing band that it was.

Hearing that actually reminds me of the song Freddie wrote for Brian years earlier > Soul Brother. The story. Brian wrote the song shortly after Freddie died and sent it to Rog - who dumped it in a drawer and forgot about it for 2 years. He then found it and played it and thought it was a superb song, the surviving Queen members then recorded it- it was John's last recorded song before retiring from the music business. I must've played this song a thousand times and it gets a lump in my throat each and every time; the emotion is so raw and intense, the musicality so brilliant..... write the rest yourselves. oh, gawd YES! all of it, but particularly that line rips my heart out too, every. damned. time. ... yet the song and performance is so wonderfully put together both musically and emotionally and also visually that i keep going back to it! There is always such a RAWness to the emotion there, even though the video wasn't cut until at least 6-7 yrs after Freddie's death - the intensity and pain i feel coming from them always gives me the inner horrors to think what sort of emotional mess they must have been in around the time he'd died - the word "misery" doesn't beGIN to encompass it❣️ Being able to express some of those many emotions creatively, by writing and making such beautiful music is, however, incredibly helpful... no, not quite that word but can't put my finger on it (siggghh) - see, It doesn't remove or dilute the pain/trauma exactly but somehow it can feel as though the beauty in the music going out to others who might need or welcome it, DOES help, it's a way of making and putting something beautiful into the world by using your emotion and talent in a good way, not letting the pain curdle inside. [i wasn't much of a songwriter myself but I sure could sing, and i know that sometimes my gifts and my putting my skill and talent out there actually helped some folks a bit. understanding and accepting THAT is the kind of thing that has helped me thru some tough places; I can only hope their gorgeous, glorious bit of beauty and respect of and joy in Freddie's life shown here helped those guys too.]

It wasn't actually recorded for six years after Freddie passed away, it was John final song he recorded, he retired from public life afterwards, and it actually included Diana Princess Of Wales and the clothes designer who'd both died before it was finally released, so the lyrics were for these as well, they wanted to make the set look like they were just in the studio going through a song, John never liked hearing his own voice on record although he'd sing on the records and in concert, but he's never fully recovered from the death of Freddie, as far as I know never moved away from the home he bought with his first big payout, after they were robbed by the ex manager, I think one of his sons is now playing Guitar, but he stays very much in the background

Sensational. Queen continues to transcend everything and spread so much love, joy, strength, creativity, confidence, and unity to all who listen! The timing of when they released the song also made it a tribute for Gianni Versace, Princess Diana, and anyone else whose life was cut tragically short. In case your wondering, the illustration is of Icarus from Greek mythology, which Freddie drew himself. It was clever of them to make the lyrical reference in "they're only flying too close to the sun." Brian and Roger have such beautiful and criminally underrated singing voices! "No one but you" truly showed that Freddie was like a brother to them, not just their frontman and that their bond was so strong, not even death could break it. Their sorrow is so clear in their faces, voices, and in every note they played/sang and were doing everything they could to not break down crying, not that I would blame them if they did. The close-up of the champagne glass on the piano was in homage to Freddie, who would sometimes toast the audience during special gigs. In 2019, Brian and his wife went to Freddie's birthplace of Zanzibar on pilgrimage to visit Freddie's childhood home, school, retrace some of his childhood steps and even visit the hospital where Freddie and his sister were born. Alongside making this video and recording the song, before he became a recluse, John participated in a Queen collaboration with Bejart+Ballet for life in honor of Freddie who was a ballet and opera enthusiast. Here is the making of video link. ruclips.net/video/YdKYpoLfCA8/видео.html

That piano was Freddie’s. Brian has it in his home now. Freddie was like John’s big brother. John was only 19 when he joined the band and Freddie watched out for him. When Freddie passed John said- no Freddie no Queen. He was broken.I read that Roger said it took him 5 years to stop grieving for Freddie so badly. This song is beautiful but so heartbreaking. Freddie- everyone love him-

This beautiful, passionate, song brings me to tears. Princess Diana had just died, and the designer Versace. In the video of how this moving tribute was made, they mention this; so the song was heavy with the emotion of the impact of their passing. You can feel it.

I have this yellow vinyl single and I am pretty sure I got it in the 90's but not sure I listened to it then as Queen was pretty new for me. I recently have been listening to it and watched a couple reactions, finding that it is one of my favorites now. I knew you hadn't done it yet and I am so glad you did. These last couple songs are ones people need to watch/listen to after they've gotten to know the band and a lot of songs as it just feels better to listen to at that stage. Great reaction again. I really thought you were gonna cry, but that's because I always do. Haha.
Good luck on the upcoming move! 'Flash' and 'The Hero' soon... 🙃

Truly emotional video. I've watched it so many times and it gets me every time. I like the connection to the tragedy of Icarus, "flying too close to the sun". Aids was unknown in the 70's when Freddie probably contracted it. The pictures of Freddie interspersed in the song give me goosebumps, and also the lonely glass of champagne on the piano at the end. Thanks for another honest reaction, David.

I heard this song for the first time in 1997 when it was released. Two years after the "Made in Heaven" album. Made In Heaven - the whole album- gutted me. Then this song. Devastating. They make you feel their pain and loss and just how much they miss him. This song leaves a Freddie shaped hollowness in me everytime I hear it. It always puts a lump in my throat and starts the tears going. Every. Single. Time.

Beautiful reaction. In this video and at the FM Tribute Concert ,John is right there doing his job, but he seems set apart from the others, and I get that. I fell in love with Queen at the age of nine when I first saw Killer Queen on Top Of The Pops on a Thursday night after I ran home from Brownies so as not to miss Top Of The Pops.
When Fred died I was heartbroken. I still cry when watching them perform.
My eldest lad called one of his identical twins Freddie and when he got married his beautiful wife chose to walk up the aisle, with the twins toddling along side, to Fat Bottomed Girls.
I think I waited 10years before I could listen/watch this one and even now, I still cry every time.

This man was crushed by Freddie's passing ,vowing to never play without Freddie,. There can be but one

Hi David. I felt the same way when I first saw this video. John looks so lost. John is more obvious because he's just sitting there with his bass? Obviously the other 2 had strong feelings also but were at least busy playing and singing. And of course we all know what happened with John not long after this.
Obviously this song (so brilliantly written by Brian) gets to any Queen fan. If it doesn't then where is your soul? The first few times I saw it there were tears running down my face and I didn't even realize. I have seen it enough that it doesn't happen anymore but it still is like a punch in the gut.
In NO WAY would I take away from this song but some of Brian's solo work he hits those notes. This one is a bit different I thing because it's pure emotion.

Thank you for the right mix of music in my headphones! This video and song gets me every single time while at the same time is an absolutely beautiful tribute to Freddie. I cannot comprehend being them, losing a band member like Freddie Mercury at what was without a doubt a time when the band still had so much more to write and say. What I really love about this is that you get to see the other 3 band members and just how great they really were and are? Queen was known for those harmonies and these gentlemen provided that along with their instruments as well. We also have several songs with both Brian and Roger where we get a glimpse of how great they are but Freddie was larger than life so those moments maybe were not as pivotal until you go back and pay even more attention to them as a whole, a sum of ALL the parts. I think they were SO good throughout the years, so precise, and with Freddie’s showmanship it was very easy to take them for granted, to at times forget about them when there would be no Queen without these particular set of men and Freddie Mercury. And yes, John Deacon looks devastated and my heart does indeed go out to him. They stuck with Freddie right until the end and, from experience, that is a very difficult thing to do. I admire all of them so much for so many different reasons. 💗

It is a very non-traditional Queen song, recorded in October 1997 as a tribute to Freddie but it took on a lot more significance as Diana, Princess of Wales died in the August of that year. Diana was known to be a fan of the band herself. it was gradually given a worldwide release soon after. (released 5th January 1998 in the UK)

  • @nichemphill8321

Elton John plays a minor part in the origin of this song. The song was first put to paper a year before in 1996 when Brian unveiled the Montreux Freddie statue and Brian began writing and rewriting it was intended for a solo project.
In early 1997 Sir Elton John persuaded the three remaining members to temporary reform again for a concert in Paris. It was hard as Deaky had Retired and was very reluctant to but finally agreed. After the concert, Brian rediscovered the notes for the song and completed it. Then Brian passed it to Roger for a second opinion and after some tinkering, this was the finished result.
Brian and Roger got John on board but he only agreed to take part on the condition that it would be his last ever Queen related job. At the same time, he gave his blessing for QUEEN to continue with Brian & Roger. And John retired and has become a recluse, very rarely seen. (a photographer took a long lensed photo of John around the time of the Bohemian Rhapsody film)
