11:40 Holy shit. That characterization of Batman, the choice to film the threatening scenes in broad daylight, the parallels to the myth of Dracula. That's just genius story-telling, theming and filmmaking from Nolan and his team. Hats off to this great director.
the view of joker as representing the fear of society of sorta youth changing things for the worse never hit me..damn ...hes like a child...hes not acting in normal ways
Piggy backing off that, the ONLY scene we see Batman in broad daylight is at the end of TDKR when he's fighting Bane , and Bane's followers and the cops are fighting in the background. At that point in the character journey, Batman is has almost completed his redemption arc, of transcending into becoming a symbol, whatever Gotham needs him to be, going from this shadowy vigilante who only operates at night to a HERO not afraid to be seen by everyone and inspired by everyone. It's cool, seemingly, that Nolan stuck to this conceit of "Batman only comes out at night" and waited until the FINAL action sequence in The Dark Knight trilogy, the one that cements Batman as a legend in order to finally pay that off.
I see him as an antagonist of sorts for Batman/Bruce Wayne. Harvey and Bruce Wayne/Batman deal with justice in different ways hence the Dark Knight/White Knight duality. Harvey is also a competitor for Rachel's affections who clearly has chosen Harvey over Bruce. It's due to Harvey's actions as Two Face that forces Bruce into hiding, and Gordon to lie to the public. I always believe that situations reveal who we are more than they change us. Two Face indicates to me literallly and figuratively that there was a lot of darkness in Harvey initially that just needed to be revealed which was what Joker was trying to prove and he did. So he is very much an antagonist in many ways to Bruce.
There's a video essay I watched the other day where it's suggested the Beast is the protagonist of Beauty and the Beast, not Belle. Belle is the character the audience follows and is introduced to, but she does little to drive the plot of the film, and doesn't change as a character during it - she has no arc. Beast, on the other hand, grows as a character and changes (quite literally) throughout the story. Harvey in TDK is the same, basically. Which I guess makes Joker Gaston XD

The production of this movie had some of the greatest challenges. I was a part of the team, proud to work with Nolan, I learned so much, can’t believe it’s been more than 12 years
The best thing Heath did was change his voice. He just made the character so mind bogglingly twisted. My favorite line "Do I really look like a guy with a plan?" But his opening line "I believe that whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you...stranger. Heh"

I want Nolan to direct every movie and franchise that I'm fond of. I literally am always blown away by his talent for storytelling and directing in his own original ways. I'm not kidding, I wouldn't mind seeing him direct Fast and Furious movies, or Jurassic World, or James Bond.. I'm sure he could make all of them great.
@@BehindtheCurtain Nolan approach me as a think piece kind of guy so he aims depth in stories for me atleast. I'd like Nolan to touch other mind bending topics since he's so dang good at it.
The GOAT of Movie directors. Nolan has taken different genres of film and turned them into instant classics. Nolan understands no matter the setting, we can all still very well relate. The man is our modern day Shakespeare.
They seemed to be going back and forth with what the Joker is. One minute he's a force to be reckoned with, the next he's an anarchist. The Burma scene would've been great if when Bruce asked "why did they steal them", Alfred just shrugged his shoulders.
This movie is soo good that I even catch myself watching the video and not realizing there talking over it. My mind takes me to the movie and that’s all I can hear
People think the Joker lost in dark knight, many didn’t comprehend his goal was to turn Gotham's White Knight (Harvey Dent) into the mad criminal descending into chaos. And there by turning The Dark Knight (Batman) in a murderer.
Alan Watts: (philosopher) talking on societies jokers/fools. "The Fool's standpoint is that all social institutions are games. He sees the whole world as game playing. That's why, when people take their games seriously and take on stern and pious expressions the Fool gets the giggles because he knows that it is all a game." WE ARE ALL CLOWNS
Christopher Nolan, perhaps the most bankable director at the moment, maybe even more so than Spielberg. Certainly not in the latter’s hay-day, but definitely right now.
Using Francis Bacon's paintings as an inspiration for the Joker was brilliant. Illustrating Joker's look as unsettling and chaotic rather than clean and appealing was great. And that's already been done brilliantly by Dave McKean on Arkham Asylum graphic novel. His art style is clearly inspired by Bacon. So it's like a full circle. I love seeing art influence mainstream movies. Jacob's Ladder is another movie inspired by Bacon's paintings that I love.
Best cinematic Joker ever. Phoenix was pretty good but Heath Ledger's performance and the writing behind it were on another level. This movie will probably stick with me forever.
I'm hesitant for a Joker origin story, but I'm keeping an open mind. The trailers look compelling. We'll see if the story holds up. That's what matters.
Amazing video, these are really fantastic. Would you consider doing one about the Before trilogy? I think it’s an example of some of the best dialogue-focused screenwriting from the past couple decades, particularly Before Sunset. Thanks for making these, they are fascinating.
I really appreciate the research you do for every video you make. You provide information in a very beautiful structure. My only criticism is in the editing, specifically, in the audio. Most of the time it is not clear who is the one talking, and there are multiple people. So I think it would be better to just have a small pop-up to indicate who is talking. Keep it up.

@@bryanhawkins9418 Dent was important because Batman had no jurisdiction...just like the Joker. Batman had to do his work hiding in the shadows which forced the criminals hand to believe in someone they fully didn't understand in Joker...Dent had a public face and was the ray of light for Gotham they hadn't seen in years since Bruce's parents. Dent was proof Gotham could be cleaned up within the boundaries of the law and not from a vigilante who could easily be blamed for their cities failures.
I can watch this
Movie every damn day! The performance by heath ledger is iconic and timeless.
Juan Castano the joker is heath ledger
Such great quality! Love the clean audio. Keep going mate
Heath Ledger is one of a damn kind ;( May he RIP
It's only a matter of time before this channel blows up. Absolutely heavenly for TV and film fans - Such a variety of in-depth, concise, articulate info on a creation. I look forward to seeing it amass more subscribers from the early, perhaps even nostalgic days of the channel. Though narcissism will be earned when you get huge, please remember us, the little people, who offered support for an upcoming, passionate RUclipsr aiming to make it big. ... at least remember me, I gave likes on videos dammit. I'd do it multiple times if I could!
“An enemy that cannot be understood, but can only be fought” 👏👏
I never notice before that the police officer scrambling during the assassination attempt by the Joker looks a lot like bats scattering away from the light or from a tunnel. That's why I love "The Dark Knight" because you see something new every time you watch it.
I really really really enjoy your videos and this one takes the cake. Loyal fan here. Keep going, keep building the community 🤙
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed this one.
"Some men just want to watch the world burn"
Yes
Christopher Nolan is living art itself. he is passionate about his work, even though he put no dialogue and narrate movie himself, it will be exploring depths of human emotion. Critical thoughts and flawless imagination putting on paper and on the screen can only be achieved if man has gifted soul. thanks for video.
The Dark Knight will NEVER be matched. EVER.
it tough to when it basically was about a white knight going dark hence the tittle and this progress happened throughout the film with a INCREDULOUS performance by Ledger
That's just a ridiculous statement. Maybe in your lifetime, I suppose it's possible, but there's no need to be so closed minded.
@@TheRyndiculous I think night owl was implying the dark knight played with us all on how we view villians and heroes and shit even the title has no clear answer as to who really was the dark knight shit I'd even categorize that psycho in that category . Every seen with this joker just melts away with how its written and executed for fans of DC or everyone in general.
@@TheRyndiculous the movie started a new way ppl looked at movies like these, it is a benchmark and he says the benchmark will never be changed
Matt Reeves said hold his beer!
This channel is amazing. how has this slid below the radar for a year? I'm addicted and I've seen two videos...
The production of this movie had some of the greatest challenges. I was a part of the team, proud to work with Nolan, I learned so much, can’t believe it’s been more than 12 years
I personally love both jokers! They both have their unique styles. That’s what makes them both amazing.
Christopher Nolan is like Shakespeare of directing.
He will be remembered for hundreds and hundreds of years from now.
Not even fucking close.
I was out on set, with Nolan and his crew for tenent. Great insight
Jesus how many dark knight youtube videos am i gonna watch?
BlackCheezit all of them.
Yes.
one more... just one more...
Damn you! as many as it takes too drive the point home. NOW WATCH! lol.
@@gabevillarrealedits i have watched all of them so im watching this again
I would love to see “The Dark Knight Rises” of an alternate universe where Heath was still alive and came back to help finish the series.
I really appreciate that Nolan didn’t go into filming having only read a few comics and watching a cartoon like many do
really great video, thanks very much for putting this together, nice to hear nolan in his own words!
There shall never be another Joker like Heath Ledger's Joker...R.I.P.
he just wasnt able to break character.....ever
Thank you for this, the best comic book movie of all time
Agreed!
Bruh it became more than that. It’s a crime drama that’s up there with the departed and seven.
The best thing Heath did was change his voice. He just made the character so mind bogglingly twisted. My favorite line "Do I really look like a guy with a plan?" But his opening line "I believe that whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you...stranger. Heh"
These are so informative and masterfully edited!
Thanks, David! I'm glad you enjoyed them.
This is a fantastic and under appreciated channel, always looking forward for the next one
Thank you, Stefan!
“society” -chris nolan
This channel deserves way more attention. Excellent in all points.
👏👏
Thank you!
Mm. Watching this with my wife while we drink wine and smell it the whole time. We both met while working at our philosophy majors at the University of Turtlenecks. We love the Dark Knight. It makes us feel very smart.
Masterpiece of a movie that embraces all the dark and thematic through-lines of the greatest Batman comics.
Could you please work your magic on the Coen Brothers like Fargo or The Big Lebowski or anything at all by them? It would be greatly appreciated
Yes! I would love to do them. I've had an unfinished Coen Brothers video sitting on my computer for literally months. They just don't like talking about their process much. I'll take another swing at it soon. Thanks for watching!
Behind the Curtain that is fascinating. I wonder what other auteurs are reluctant to talk about their process...
Behind the Curtain yesss big Lebowski and no country for old men r godsss of movies!!! I really dig the new Tarantino too. Once upon.
What I love about Batman is “human super hero” thats special
Watching this just makes me appreciate The Dark Knight and the trilogy as a whole alot more.
The Dark knight came out 11 years ago? Makes me feel old.
Great video, Christopher nolan's batman and joker were my favorite iterations
Thank you!
"Even if that seems different or doesn't fit into people's expectations, that's what going to distinguish it. If you can do it successfully."
*If you can do it successfully* You hear that, D&D?
Dungeons and Dragons?
Dicks and Ducks?
Dumb and dumber ?
Haha I thought of them and Rian Johnson the second he said that
This movie makes me sad.
It reminds me of a great actor we lost way too soon.
May he rest in peace. We'll never forget him.
Bond Film would be amazing
@@BehindtheCurtain Nolan approach me as a think piece kind of guy so he aims depth in stories for me atleast. Hunger Games, Soma "Its a PC Game", Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind "Cant think of a thing that could make it even better, maybe Nolan can", Suicide Club "doubt he can pull it off without triggering today's society", Constantine, PsychoPass "its an anime" oh my i let my brain wander too much theres just so many. I'd like Nolan to touch other mind bending topics since he's so dang good at it.
I wonder how Nolan would with a Biblical epic that would be cool he should do Job for sure.
Thanks a lot for this video! It was like I was hoping for, instead of just another amateurish video.
Absolutely loved this video - thank you!!
Thank you for watching!
That was a means to an end, not his goal.
@TCB he says converting Harvey was his endgame in the final conversation between joker and Batman..
This was beautiful!
Chaotic good and chaotic evil. DnD figured this one out a while ago.
but which one is which
@@cubertmiso Batman is chaotic good, Joker is chaotic evil.
@ Joker is chaotic good.
@ And Batman is lawful evil.
@@cubertmiso Alright, what is your basis for that?
You can listen Nolan talking about the mechanics of film all day
He changed the look a bit, but Ledger still looked like Joker. Unlike some other recent films.
Cuz he's all messed up, ya know? ruclips.net/video/LPJ8b7zwa98/видео.html
I just found out Heath Ledger was only 28 when he died... Fuck now I'm sad again. I thought he was older.
Alan Watts: (philosopher) talking on societies jokers/fools.
"The Fool's standpoint is that all social institutions are games. He sees the whole world as game playing. That's why, when people take their games seriously and take on stern and pious expressions the Fool gets the giggles because he knows that it is all a game."
WE ARE ALL CLOWNS
One of the best performances ever. What a character!
Christopher Nolan, perhaps the most bankable director at the moment, maybe even more so than Spielberg. Certainly not in the latter’s hay-day, but definitely right now.
Nolan + Zimmer = 🤯
Using Francis Bacon's paintings as an inspiration for the Joker was brilliant. Illustrating Joker's look as unsettling and chaotic rather than clean and appealing was great. And that's already been done brilliantly by Dave McKean on Arkham Asylum graphic novel. His art style is clearly inspired by Bacon. So it's like a full circle. I love seeing art influence mainstream movies. Jacob's Ladder is another movie inspired by Bacon's paintings that I love.
Such a genius. He created Heath ledger and Joaquin phoenix jokers differently both convincing and powerful
He created Joaquin’s Joker?
Best cinematic Joker ever. Phoenix was pretty good but Heath Ledger's performance and the writing behind it were on another level. This movie will probably stick with me forever.
The mystery of The Jokers back story, is a large part of what makes him such a good baddie!😁
This video is priceless!!! Thank you, so much!
Will the new joker movie touch the brilliance of this ?
I have high hopes for the new one
I'm hesitant for a Joker origin story, but I'm keeping an open mind. The trailers look compelling. We'll see if the story holds up. That's what matters.
Nope
IGN gave it a 10/10
Other reviewers gave it 9's as well.
@@legomoviesstudios8822 lol u have to keep an open mind
Amazing video, these are really fantastic. Would you consider doing one about the Before trilogy? I think it’s an example of some of the best dialogue-focused screenwriting from the past couple decades, particularly Before Sunset. Thanks for making these, they are fascinating.
If Heath ledger was still alive today I think they would bring him back for a stand lone origin film
He would have been in every Nolan movie too
I really appreciate the research you do for every video you make. You provide information in a very beautiful structure. My only criticism is in the editing, specifically, in the audio. Most of the time it is not clear who is the one talking, and there are multiple people. So I think it would be better to just have a small pop-up to indicate who is talking.
Keep it up.
Thanks for watching
Nolan is the best director out there.. and the dark knight is my favourite movie
Brilliant videos man, I´m so glad I discovered this channel, such great insight and also so nice to hear it from the makers themselves.
Glad you're enjoying them! Welcome to the channel, man! I've got a lot coming!
I love how the joker flinches BEFORE batman slams his head into the table
The writing is more depeer than i was thinking.and The Amazing direction for Nolan makes The movies a mastrpeice
Joker’s story starts with “my father was a drunkard and a fiend”
He is referring to Jack from The Shining.
