    Breaking Bad is an American neo-western crime drama television series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. The show originally aired on AMC for five seasons. The series tells the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a struggling and depressed high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with lung cancer. Together with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), White produces crystal meth to secure his family's financial future before he dies.

    This show is a great example about how "tension" doesn't have to come from a "we need to save the world" idea. I felt more tension when Hank cornered Walt and Jesse inside their own RV than in just about any moment in cinema history. What matters is not stereotypical grand consequences, but a fine layering of character, motivation, and consequences

    • @Midnight_Rider96
      @Midnight_Rider96 5 лет назад +13

      @J Wil that's more Freudian psych than philosophy. I think that particular part statement is wrong; the seat of human problems is that we desire evil. We are often selfish, prideful and self destructive. We have conflicting desires for selflessness and selfishness. This is often what causes mental illness. Pure psychopaths don't have anxiety because they have no internal conflict, it's all selfishness. Saints have anxiety because they are not pure saints and have a constant struggle against the dark corners of their hearts, as well as the moral darkness of the world around them. Many people are somewhat oblivious, and feel that conforming to social expectations is all they need to do, but realize later in life that social expectations can't be the standard because they change over time.

      Isn't that a flaw, though?
      I recently did my first rewatch and have so many good things to say about it, but realized that one thing that is so important to this show is the tension. Some movies/shows I can watch over and over again and even knowing exactly what will happen next doesn't take away from it. With this show, it feels like a whole bunch of waiting.
      I know I'll rewatch it again because it's still some of the best television produced in my lifetime. I just also know that some of the scenes that kept me on edge are boring now because the waiting is such a key aspect in this show. That's why I think this is a sign of a flaw if you look at this series as anything else beyond a one time experience.

      @Niranjan Rajesh 5 foot girl was exactly what this video was saying not to do. The term Deus ex Machina should be renamed "Arya becomes the Flash for 5 minutes."
      Since, _Deus ex Machina_ is when some new event, character, *ability,* or object *solves a seemingly unsolvable problem in a sudden, unexpected way.* It's often used as the solution to what is called "writing yourself into a corner," where the problem is so extreme that nothing in the established setting suggests that there is a logical way for the characters to escape. If a bomb is about to go off, someone finds a convenient bomb-proof bunker in easy reach.
      _Or Arya conveniently uses new, unforeshadowed sonic speed to match her silent footsteps on the snow, to become invisible and undetectable in order to get past the White Walkers._ Even though she was nearly caught by zombies in the library half an hour before.

So yeah, he was doing it for himself, not to kill or be mean, but to feel awake and alive for the first and last time in his short life. On that score, I admire him, despite the collateral damage. This is a great analysis of his character. Walt is definitely a terrible person. He has a huge ego, is super irresponsible, and is willing to ruin the lives of innocent people to get what he wants. But, at the same time, I don’t think he is evil either. He is not sadistic and doesn’t enjoy killing. And when push comes to shove, he also always puts the lives of the people he cares about above his own. He is selfish and selfless at the same time.

Gus's business success and life weren't derailed by his lust for vengeance. The business was only a tool in his playing the (very) long game in achieving that vengeance. Should've been a better husband to Skyler. He wasn't there. He was out robbing a train or cooking meth. All of this comes at a peak moment when Holly starts crying out for Skyler in that gas station bathroom place. Walt kind of realizes that in his mad scramble for power on account of his ego, he had neglected and completely drove away the one thing he really cared about.

    The thing they said about Gus’ downfall being based on emotion was so gratifying for me because thats exactly why I loved how it played out so much. Just like Walter, his pride was his downfall. Going to Hector himself was an unnecessary risk, and if he had no personal connection to hector it’s one he wouldn’t have taken. However his pride and his need for revenge against the husk of what used to be a man who he hates was the reason he went there personally.

  • @tomrath4801
    @tomrath4801 4 года назад +8

    Love the point about villains getting dumb in the 11th hour just so the hero can win. I think that plagues a lot of shows, especially GoT. Introducing Gus’ backstory with the cartel not only adds genuine depth to his character, but it also is what causes him to make his fatal error in meeting Hector, thus not sacrificing his character just to make him lose.

    The key to what makes their writing so great, with both breaking bad and maybe even more so with better call saul, is their commitment to hard work. “The job itself is like driving nails in your forehead.” Clearly Vince/they’re perfectionists, and it shows. Many other writers and shows I’m sure could be much better just by giving that level of commitment, but they go the lazy way and write by the cherries rather than the cake, as Vince also talked about. Always gonna be a fan of his work.
